The Police - 1982-07-31 - Gateshead, UK (FM)

On January 22, 1982, I saw The Police, another of those new wave/punk bands, at Madison Square Garden in New York. The Police were touring with the Go Go's, and this tour was historic in some ways. Until this point, the newer bands on the rock scene were still playing small concert halls in NY/NJ, such as the Palladium (where I saw the Pretenders and Go Go's in the fall of 1981), Hitsville (see my recent U2 post), and the Capitol Theatre (where I had seen Joe Jackson 1980 and would soon see him again in just a few months). Here were the Police, however, making the jump to the next level by headlining a show at the "World's Greatest Arena". The Ghost In The Machine album, which had been released in October 191, had risen to number 2 on the billboard charts. The single, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, topped that, by going to number 1. The Police proved that night that they belonged on the big stage, playing an incredible set highlighted by a 20,000 person sing-along to Walking On The Moon, and a driving, passionate, almost out of control encore that melded Can't Stand Losing You, Be My Girl and So Lonely into a rock and roll anthem of lost love. I've searched for a copy of that show but to no avail. Fortunately, I found this FM broadcast from July 31, 1982, 38 years ago today, from England which features almost the exact same set list. A quarter century ago on August 9, 1995, we lost the spiritual leader of the Grateful Dead, a man who was both a legendary guitarist, and an outstanding song writer.  In honor of an artist gone way to soon, our them for August is Jerry Garcia. We'll bring you Grateful Dead shows, solo Garcia shows, tribute shows, and shows from bands and performers connected to Jerry in some way. Since Garcia was also born in August, what better month to celebrate his life and legacy!

Bobby & The Midnites - 1980-07-30 - Huntington Beach, CA (SBD)

Bob Weir’s solo efforts have included successful stints with Kingfish along with a wonderful pairing with bassist Rob Wasserman in Ratdog. A somewhat unusual chapter, however, was written in the early 1980s when he fronted Bobby & The Midnites. The Midnites originally included Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead on keyboards, Matthew Kelly from Kingfish on guitar, Bobby Cochran from Steppenwolf on guitar, Tim Bogert from the Vanilla Fudge on bass and Billy Cobham, who had played with Miles Davis, on drums. Despite the star studded lineup, their self titled debut album made little commercial or critical impact. In 1982, Kelly, Mydland and Bogert left the band. Weir recruited Alphonso Johnson of Weather Report to take over on bass and added Dave Garland on keyboards. That lineup lasted until March 1983. This FM broadcast, from July 30, 1980, 4 decades ago today, captures an early line up of the Midnites, with Mydland, Cochran, Bogert  and Greg Errico. Interestingly, the gig was billed as Kingfish featuring bob Weir, but the backing group clearly reflects the Midnites era.

The Guess Who - 1983-07-29 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

In 1975, The Guess Who disbanded when lead singer/songwriter Burton Cummings left to pursue a solo career. Eight years later, the original line up, including Cummings and Randy Bachman briefly re-united for a limited series of concerts in Canada, which resulted in the release of a live album Together Again and a video. Those shows were the first time that Bachman and Cummings had played together in the band since the former left the Guess Who in 1970. The reunion was short-lived, however, as Bachman and Cummings went right back to their solo careers once the tour ended. This soundboard recording captures the band in Toronto, on July 29, 1983, 3 dozen years ago today, By the way, check out the BTO tracks in the set list, including Takin' Care Of Business and You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet!

James Taylor - 1982-07-28 - White Plains NY (SBD) 

In 1981, James Taylor released the album Dad Loves His Work, which just like 6 of his previous 8 albums, made it to the top 10 on the Billboard charts (the other 2 by the way made the top 20!). Taylor’s life, however, was about to change dramatically. His then wife, Carly Simon, had given him an ultimatum: cut back on his music and touring, and spend more time with her and their children, or the marriage was over. The album's title was JT’s answer, and their divorce soon followed. Whether it was related or not is debatable, but with the end of his marriage’s end also came an end of JT’s chart success. He would not have another top 10 album until Hourglass in 1997, a gap of 16 years. This soundboard recording captures Taylor on tour a little over a year after the release of Dad Loves His Work, on July 28, 1982, 38 years ago today.

Sting - 1988-07-27 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

Released in October of 1987, Sting’s 2nd solo album, Nothing Like The Sun, would climb to #9 on the Billboard charts in the Us and go all the way to #1 in his native England. The disc would eventually certify as double platinum (sales of 2 million units) in the US. Sting launched an extensive tour in support of the album, and at one point even considered releasing a live album. He recorded this show at the Wiltern Theater on July 27, 1988, 32 years ago today, a 32 song marathon to ensure he had plenty of material from which to choose (most shows on the tour were only around 20 songs long as evidenced in these posts from Argentina and Italy.) While Sting shelved plans for the disc, the soundboard tapes from the Wiltern show surfaced in 1992 and you get to hear them here!

Jerry Garcia Band - 1981-07-26 - Berkeley CA (SBD)

The year 1981 was an extremely busy one for the Jerry Garcia Band, as they played 78 shows, almost as many as The Grateful Dead, who played 82 shows of their own. Of those almost 80 gigs, Jerry played 11 at the Keystone in Berkeley, a venue close to his home stomping grounds in San Francisco. The Keystone was one of Garcia’s favorite venues to play, and was where his 1973 live album with legendary keyboardist Merl Saunders was recorded. This soundboard, from July 26, 1981, 39 years ago today, captures Jerry in fine form at The Keystone. With longtime cohorts John Kahn on bass and Melvin Seals on keyboards, Jerry demonstrates his uncanny ability to interpret songs written by other artists, including Motown standards such as The Way You Do The Things You Do and Second That Emotion, Dylan’s Tangled Up in Blue, The Band’s The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and The Beatles' Dear Prudence. In addition, he plays an outstanding version of the Holland, Dozier & Holland classic, I’m A Road Runner, a tune which the band played 75 times in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but which fell out of their repertoire, never to return, in 1983.

The Turtles broke up in 1970, though the band co leaders,Howard Kaylan and Mark Volma, found a 2nd career as a musical comedy act known as Flo & Eddie. In 1984, the duo put The Turtles back together to headline an oldies tour, appropriately named The Happy Together Tour, after their best known tune! Tom Petty - 1987-07-24 - Jacksonville FL (SBD)

After spending much of 1986 on tour as Bob Dylan’s backing band (see our Juy 7 post) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers went back into the studio to work on a new album. The result was the disc Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) which was released on April 21, 1987. The album went to #20 on The Billboard charts, and yielded the single Jammin’ Me, which climbed to #18. Jammin' Me was co written with Bob Dylan. This soundboard recording captures Petty on tour in support of Let Me Up (I've Had Enough), in Jacksonville, FL, on July 24, 1987, 33 years ago today.

Dire Straits - 1983-07-23 - London UK (FM) 

In late 1982, Dire Straits released Love Over Gold, their 4th studio album,  The disc would go to #1 on th charts in the UK and reach #19 on the US Billboard charts.   The highlight of the album was the 14-minute-long opus Telegraph Road", which became a staple of the band's set lists s wll as Mark Knopfler's once he became a solo artist,  Dire Straits launched an 8 month world tour in support of the labum, which culminated in a 2 night stand at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.  This FM broadcast captures excerpts from the final show, on July 23, 1983, 37 years ago today.

After experiencing success with Rockpile and on his own in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dave Edmunds took a break from recording between 1984 and 1990. During that time, he lived in semi retirement in his home in Wales. He continued to tour, however, both as a solo artist and with Ringo Starr’s All Starr band (1992 version, and again in 2000). This FM broadcast captures Edmunds live in Stockholm, Sweden on July 22, 1987, 32 years ago today, touting in support of the album I Hear You Rockin, a live disc released in 1986. Elton John - 1982-07-21 - Landover MD (FM)

Now, if the 1970's were the pinnacle of Elton John's commercial and artistic success, then the 1980's were the low point. While he still had several successful singles in that decade, such as I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues, Sad Songs and I Don't Wanna Go On with You Like That (all which made the Billboard Top 5, though none climbed all the way to #1, not one of his albums could crack the top 10. His 1982 disc, Jump Up, perfectly symbolized the decade. On the one hand, two singles from the album, Blue Eyes, and Empty Garden (his tribute to the late John Lennon), both cracked the top 15 on the charts. On the other hand, lyricist Bernie Taupin called Jump Up "one of our worst albums," adding "its a terrible, awful, disposable album, but it had Empty Garden on it, so it's worth it for that one song." While Elton's studio work was a bit hit or miss, he could still put on a good as live show as anyone in the business. He toured extensively in support of Jump Up, playing 115 concerts in 1982 in Australia, Europe and North America. This FM broadcast from July 21, 1982, 38 years ago today, captures portions of Elton's show in Landover, about 1/2 way through his tour.

The Ramones - 1982-07-20 - Rosyln, NY (FM)

They were the pioneers of punk rock, the resident house band at the legendary New York club CBGB, with long hair and leather jackets, counting off 1 2,3,4 then launching into 2 minute songs that were a wall of noise, rebelling against the excesses that plagued rock and roll in the mid 1970s. They were the Ramones, and, in the words of Trouser Press magazine,“With just four chords and one manic tempo”, they “blasted open the clogged arteries of mid-'70s rock, reanimating the music.” Interestingly, the punk rock sound of the Ramones had its roots in the pop music of the 1960s. The band cited the music of The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Kinks and Rolling Stones, as well as girl groups such as The Ronettes and The Shangri-Las, as key influences. Perhaps then, it’s not surprising that the band agreed to let Phil Spector, who, of course, had worked with both The Beatles and The Ronettes, produce their 1980’s album, End Of The Century. The disc clearly had more of a pop than a punk sound, which sparked controversy with both the band and its fans. That said, it became the Ramone’s highest charting album reaching #44 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbing to # 14 in the UK. Moreover, the band quickly incorporated tunes from the disc into their live shows, as captured in this FM broadcast from My Father's Place on from July 20, 1982, 38 years ago today. Gregg Allman  - 1987-07-18 - Austin TX (FM)

In 1982, the Allman Brothers broke up, unable to operate as band anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Betts explained that :we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Gregg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music. He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose." In 1987, somehow, Allman again found that purpose, recording a solo album for Epic Records appropriately entitled I'm No Angel. The title track became a top 40 hit, and Allman went on tour in support of the disc. This FM broadcast captures him during that tour, in Austin on July 18, 1987, 33 years ago today. By the way, the success of that album brought new attention to the Allman Brothers, which was further reinforced 2 years later by the release of the box set Dreams, celebrating the band's 20th anniversary. As the 1980s closed, the Allman Brothers would reform, and stay together for another 30 plus years!

Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1985-07-18 - St Louis, MO (SBD)

I saw Crosby Stills & Nash for the first time in 1978, when the band was riding high after the release of the CSN album a year earlier. That disc climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts, while the single, Just A Song Before I Go, had reached the #7 spot. By the time I saw the band again in 1985, the picture was very different. CSN had not released a studio album in 3 years, since Daylight Again in 1982. Crosby had been arrested several times on drug and weapons charges. Yet, despite their troubles, the trio seemed to find a way to tour every summer, taking refuge on stage from their issues. In addition to the 1985 show, I would see CSN in 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1992 This soundboard recording captures CSN in St. Louis on July 18, 1985, 35 years ago today.  Less than a month later, I would see the trio at Pier 84 in New York, where The Band served as their lead-in.

Rolling Stones - 1982-07-17 - Naples, Italy (SBD)

The Rolling Stones returned to the top of the rock world in 1978 with the release of Some Girls, one of the finest albums of their career. They continued that momentum with their 2 follow up albums, Emotional Rescue in 1980 and Tattoo You in 1981. Both hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, the last 2 Stones albums to do so. Tattoo You also spawned the last Stones single to reach as high as number 2 on the charts, the upbeat, infectious rocker Start Me Up. Both album and single were released in August 1981, just weeks before the Stones launched a US tour. That tour, when it was done, would gross over $50 million with an average ticket price of $16. It also featured one of the first examples of corporate sponsorship for rock tours, as Jovan fragrances paid $1 million for the rights to put their name on the tickets. The Stones took the tour to Europe in 1982, selling out 32 dates in 10 different countries between May and July.  This soundboard recording captures the Stones near the end of that run, in Italy, on July 17, 1982, 38 years ago today.

As mentioned in numerous posts on So Many Roads, between 1989 and 1991, the band played some of their finest performances not just since Jerry Garcia recovered from his diabetic coma in 1987, but also since the band’s peak in the 1970s.  That 3 year run really got started in earnest in summer of 1989, when the Dead seemed to be on fire every night they took the stage.  The July 7, 9, 10, 12 and 13 have all been officially released. Over the next 3 days, will bring you the last 3 shows of that famed summer run, from one of the Dead's favorite places to play, Alpine Valley in East Troy.  We'll start with this soundboard recording from July 17, 1989, 31 years ago today.  Download this one then come back tomorrow and the next day for the next 2 shows in this run.

In 1978, Italian singer Angelo Branduardi launched the first Carovana del Mediterraneo Tour, playing concerts along with other European musicians in Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, France, West Germany, and Switzerland. Two years later, he embarked on the 2nd Carovana del Mediterraneo Tour, this time including American artists Stephen Stills and Richie Havens. This FM broadcast captures Stills, backed by the California Blues Band, on opening night of the tour, in Milan on July 15, 1980, 4 decades ago today.

When Pink Floyd launched their Momentary Lapse of Reason tour in 1987 in support of the album of the same name, the band took to the road for the for the first time without Roger Waters, who had left the group 2 years earlier. The run was also their first set of live performances in 6 years, since the The Wall tour concluded in 1981. None of that seemed to bother the fans, who bought $135 million worth of tickets for 197 shows between the opening night of the Momentary Lapse of reason tour on September 9, 1987 and the closing show on July 18, 1989. On the next to last night of the run on July 15, 1988, 32 years ago today, Pink Floyd played on a floating stage set up in the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Over 200,000 people attended the show, which was also broadcast live via Satellite TV to an audience of over 100 million in 23 countries. Pink Floyd was forced to make adjustments to their set list and to the timing of certain songs in order to have the concert fit precisely into the allotted TV time. The show almost never took place as The Superintendent of Monuments in Venice claimed that vibrations from the music could damage historic buildings. Pink Floyd had to promise to play at reduced volume in order to gain approval for the show. The city failed to provide appropriate facilities for the concert, resulting in 300 tons of litter and human waste that had to be cleared by the army. Afterward the entire city council resigned, but not before apologizing to the Venice residents and vowing no more such concerts would ever take place. Greg Kihn - 1984-07-14 - Santa Cruz, CA (FM) 

When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new band became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. This FM broadcast catches Kihn on July 14, 1984, 3 dozen years ago today, in Santa Cruz. Download this one, and while you listen, you just might want your MTV!

Live Aid - 1985-07-13 - London & Philadelphia - Part 3 (FM)

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 35 years ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference.
