1989: If you’re as old as I am, you’ll remember Paul Masson Wines, and their slogan,“we shall sell no wine before its time.” That line was delivered in ultra serious tones by Orson Welles, who was eventually fired from that job when he admitted on talk show that he never drank Paul Masson wine. In any event, when I was watching those commercials as a kid, I never imagined that one day, Paul Masson wines would be associated with rock and roll. Yet, at some point in the late 1980s, perhaps recognizing that the Woodstock generation was gettting older and its tastes in beverages was changing, the vineyard began hosting rock concerts. This soundboard matrix recording captures Santana at the winery on September 9, 1989, 37 years ago today. By the way, now now known as the Mountain Winery, the venue’s annual concert series features up to 60 shows each summer.

On July 7, 1981, I saw Carlos Santana in concert for the first time. I was about a month removed from college graduation, and enjoying a summer off before starting business school in the fall. My buddies and I were going to see Carlos at a new outdoor concert venue that John Scher had opened, the South Mountain Muisc Fair in West Orange NJ. When we arrived, we found out that it wasn’t quite a venue at all. Nor was it an Amphitheater or Hall or an Arts Center or anything quite so fancy. It was…. THE SIDE OF A HILL. Yep, , Mr. Scher, who, as mentioned in my prior post, above all knew how to make a buck, rented space in a large park, put a stage at the bottom of a hill, put up fences to keep out anyone without a ticket, and created a concert venue. I guess it’s a little late for me to complain, especially since I bought to tickets to several other shows at South Mountain that summer. All issues with the venue were forgotten once Carlos hit the stage. He played a blistering set, featuring songs from his latest album Zebop, as well as a host of classics. We had gone hoping that Carlos would play Open Invitation, and he delivered. For the full story behind why that song was so important to us, you'll have to read my book. By the way, I would get to see Carlos again in 1986 as part of the Crack Down concerts at Madison Square Garden, which alos had CSN and the Allman Brothers on the bill!

This soundboard recording captures Carlos long after I saw him, in Sacramento on August 18, 1999, 27 years ago today. Carlos was on tour in support of the album Supernatural, which would re-ignite his career. The disc would reach No. 1 in eleven countries, including the US where it topped the Billboard charts for 12 weeks and certified 15 times platinum. The first single from the album, Smooth, featuring Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas, would also go to #1 on the Billboard charts, spending a dozen weeks at the top.

Santana 1993 - Back To Back - #1: In May 1992, Carlos Santana released his 16th studio album, Milagro. Milagro, which means "miracle" in Spanish, was dedicated to the lives of Miles Davis and Bill Graham, both of whom passed away in late 1991. Unfortunately for Carlos, the album became his first not to chart in the Billboard Top 100. The 1990’s were a difficult time for Santana, as his commercial appeal was at its absolute lowest point. That would not change until the last year of the decade, when he returned to the top of the charts with the album Supernatural and the single Smooth. All those events, though, were in the future when Carlos took the stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival  in The Hague, on July 11, 1993, 33 years ago today. If his album sales weren’t quite what they had been in the past, his playing most certainly was as good as ever, as this soundboard recording clearly reveals. Santana was part of the 1998 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class hat also featured The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and The Mama's & The Papas. Interestingly, while Peter Green was inducted with Fleetwood Mac, he performed alongside Santana on Black Magic Women, a song he wrote during his tenure with Fleetwood Mac, but that was made famous by Santana.

We had gone hoping that Carlos would play Open Invitation, and he delivered. You, see, when I was in college, a cover band called Yasgur’s Farm usually played Open Invitation to close their shows, which in a beer induced haze, probably sounded way better than it really was. In any event, that sort of became a theme song for my group of friends. Finally hearing Carlos play it live was one of the highlights of my concert journey.. I would get to see Carlos again in 1986 as part of the Crack Down concerts at Madison Square Garden, which all featured CSN and the Allman Brothers. The jam session at the end of the night saw Carlos, Dickie Betts, and Stephen Stills all on stage at once! 

This soundboard recording captures Santana years before I saw them live, on their home turf in San Francisco on December 18, 1969, 56 years ago today. About 5 months earlier, the band had played Woodstock, which propelled them to stadom. Their incendiary performance was featured in the movie and and their debut album, released on August 30, 1969, climbed to #4 on the Billboard charts.

The links between Santana and Jerry Garcia/the Grateful Dead go back to the 1960s, when both bands emerged from the San Francisco music scene. In fact, Carlo has said that seeing the Dead pull up in a limousine to the restaurant where he was washing dishers inspired him to pursue his musical dreams.  Moreover, some sources claim that once Santana macde that decison, Garcia helped mentor him.  In addition, the 2 bands would often share the bill together, such as at a New Year’s Eve 1968 show at Winterland or a jam session along with the Jefferson Airplane in February 1970 at the Family Dog. Both bands, of course, appeared at Woodstock in 1969. In the late 1980s and early 1990s. Santana served as the Dead’s lead in band for numerous shows. On several occasions, Carlos joined the Dead on stage for a few numbers. Bill Graham would play a major role in promoting shows by both Santana and The Grateful Dead throughout both bands’ long storied careers. It's no surprise then that both Santana and The Dead played at the concert in Graham’s honor in November 1991 after the fabled promoters tragic death.

1970s - #4: As we have mentioned in other posts, the Capitol Theater in Portchester NY (not be confused with the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ) was one of the East Coast’s premier concert venues for a brief 18 month period between February 1970 and July 1971. (By he way - after hard times in the 1980s and even serving as a banquet hall for a while, the Capitol re-opened in 2012 and is re-establishing itself as one of the best concert venues in the area!)  This soundboard recording captures Santana in Portchester on October 14, 1970, 54 years ago today.  The band was on tour in support of their 2nd album, entitled Abraxas. The disc would climb to #1 on the billboard charts and spawn two of Santana’s best know singles, Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va, which went to #4 and #13 respectively on the charts. In 2003, Rolling Stone would rank Abraxas at #205 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In the late 1970’s, Santana’s music began to move away from the traditional fusion of Latin, jazz, rock and blues toward a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound. That transition began with the album Inner Secrets in 1978, and continued on with Marathon in 1979 and Zeebop in 1981. While those albums produced some outstanding tracks, including, Stormy, Open Invitation, All I Ever Wanted and Winning, Santana’s core fan base questioned the band’s direction. One thing which did not change during this period, however, was the band’s ability to play dynamic live concerts. As this soundboard from Berkeley from September 13, 1980, 44 years ago today, demonstrates, Carlos could still play guitar with the best of them and the band could electrify any concert venue

Santana - 1994-08-14 - Saugerties, NY (SBD)

Of all the band's to play Woodstock, few got as significant a career boost as Santana did. Their incendiary performance was featured in the movie and helped propel sales of their debut album, which would be released on August 30, 1969, to #4 on the Billboard charts. Incredibly, Sanatna almost didn't get to perform at Woodstock. When Bill Graham negotiated to have the Grateful Dead at the festival, he insisted that 1 of 2 other bands that he managed be on the bill. The 2 bands in question were It's A Beautiful Day and Santana. After listening to recordings of both groups, Michael Laing, who had helped organize Woodstock, couldn't decide between them. So he flipped a coin. Santana won and the rest is history.

Like his fellow Woodstock alum Joe Cocker, Santana also played at the 25th anniversary concert.  This soundboard recording captures that performance, on August 14, 1994, 30 years ago today.

Eric Clapton - 1975-08-09 - Palo Alto, CA (Ex Aud) 

In the summer of 1969, Eric Clapton was on tour as part of Blind Faith, the "super group" he had formed earlier that year with Ginger Baker and Steve Winwood.  Clapton was already growing tired of the group, especially the recurrence of the infighting with Ginger Baker, which previously had plagued the final days of Cream. Perhaps that explains why he and the rest of Blind Faith were on different pages when it came to Woodstock.  EC wanted to play the festival but was over ruled by the rest of the band.  Instead they played a show in Santa Barbara, CA, about as far away from Woodstock as you could get!

In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Clapton 6 years after Woodstock, on his 2nd solo tour after his 1974 comeback, in Plao Alto, on August 8, 1975, 49 years ago this very day.  By the way, he gets some help from Woodstock veteran Carlos Santana on the final track!

Santana 1970 - Back To Back - #1: For a brief 18 month period from February 1970 to July 1971, the Capitol Theatre in Portchester NY (not to be confused with the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ) was one of the premier concert venues on the East coast. Name a major rock act and they most likely played the venue. The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, Yes, Leon Russell, Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, James Taylor, Traffic, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few, took the stage at the Capitol. The Grateful Dead were one of the most frequent visitors to the venue, including a 6 night run in February 1971. This soundboard recording captures the early show from Santana at the Capitol on June 13, 1970, 54 years ago today. Download this one, then stop back later today for the late show, the 2nd half of this Back to Back set.  One final note - The Capitol eventually stopped hosting concerts, spent 40 years as a Broadway style theater and a catering hall and then in 2012, once again became a rock and roll venue.

When Santana went on tour in early 1973, the band and their leader were both going through periods of change. The band's most recent album, Caravanserai, released in late 1973, was departure from Santana's earlier work. The album featured more of a jazz sound, as opposed to the mix of rock and salsa which highlighted prior albums. When the band finished recording the album, Gregg Rolie and Neil Schon both left the group, going off to launch Journey. In the wake of their departures, Carlos formed a new version of the band, with Armando Peraza and Chepito Areas on percussion, Doug Rauch on bass, Michael Shrieve on drums, and Tom Coster and Richard Kermode on keyboards. Santana's personal life also was in transition at this time. He married Deborah King, he daughter of the late blues singer and guitarist, Saunders King. He and Deborah became disciples of Sri Chinmoy, an Indian philosopher and spiritualist. Carlos was given the spiritual name Devadip, meaning the lamp, light and eye of God. Further changes would come later in the decade, as Santana's music would evolve to having a more AOR sound. Through all the change, however, one thing remained constant, Santana's ability to light up a concert arena.
