1980: The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to Cleveland on September 15, 1980, 46 years ago today.

I've seen Squeeze on 2 occasions - in August 1981 at the South Mountain "Music Fest" - in reality, the side of a hill - and in August 1985, at Pier 84 in New York.

This FM broadcast captures Squeeze on June 30, 1980, 46 years ago today, in Chicago. The band was on tour in support of the album Argy Bargy, which helped them finally breakthrough in the US and had some critics hailing Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook as the new Lennon & McCartney. While that praise was a bit over the top, there’s no doubt that the duo filled Argy Bargy with a host of soon to be classic new wave tunes, including Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart and If I Didn't Love You.

On September 3, 1977, me and my buddies along with 150,000 others, made the pilgrimage to Englishtown NJ, to see the Grateful Dead play the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter., as evidenced by the fact the show was officailly released as Dick's Picks #15.  I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as over a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 31 years since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic.

This soundboard recording captures the Dead on June 12, 1980, 46 years ago today, in Portland.  That year, the band celebrated their 15th anniversary, and the shows during the 2nd half of the year, in San Francisco, New Orleans and New York that included an acoustic set, get most of the attention. I went to the Halloween show at Radio City Music Hall, which easily makes my list of the top ten Dead shows I've attended.  It was also the first concert ever broadcast over closed circuit TV! That said, some pretty fine playing was going on early in 1980 as well, as evidenced by the fact that portions of the May 6, 7, 15 and 16 shows have all been officially released. The band was showcasing tunes such as Alabama Getaway, Lost Sailor, Saint Of Circumstance, Althea, Feel Like A Stranger, and Far From Me from their latest album, Go To Heaven. That disc was the first to feature new keyboard player Brent Mydland. Incredibly, the Dead would not release another studio album until 1987.

I saw The Clash once in August 1982, a concert I've discussed on numeorus occasions on this blog since I almost missed it! The saga of that show - especially the trip there - is one of my favorite tales from my book!

This soundboard recording goes back 2 years earlier, capturing The Clash on June 10, 1980, 46 years ago today, on tour in Bristol in support of the album London Calling. Recorded in the summer of 1979, and released on December 14 of that year, London Calling is often hailed as the greatest album of the punk/new wave era. Rolling Stone ranked it 8th of its list of the 500 best albums of all time. Robert Christgau described London Calling as "warm, angry, and thoughtful, confident, melodic, and hard-rocking" and called it "the best double-LP since Exile on Main Street." The cover photo, which  features Paul Simonon smashing his bass, a perfect punk rock moment, was shot at The Palladium in New York on September 21, 1979, a concert we posted here.

This soundboard recording captures the band durng that fine month, in Glen Falls on May 7, 1980, 46 years ago today.  The show features several tunes - Alabama Getaway, Lost Sailor, and Saint Of Circumstance - from the band's recently released labum Go To Heaven, the first with new keyboardist Brent Myland. That disc woul dbe the Dead's last studio album for 7 years, until the release of  In The Dark in 1987.

1980s - #7: When I was in collge, I had a good friend who went to UMass, where thanks to WBCN, he was clued in to the energing punk and new wave scene. One of the band's he introduced all of us to was Boston's own Robin Lane & The Chartbusters.  Their debut disc, with songs like When Things Go Wrong, Without You, and It Will Only Hurt A Little While, just to name 3, were the perfect blend of punk and new wave, all powered by Robin's slightly gravelly, definitely powerful, vocals. On August 10, 1980, I got to see Robyn at the Royal Manor North, one of the countless NJ rock clubs that thrived in the early 1980s.  If you lived in the area at the time, you'll recognize that name, along with other like Creations, the Cuss From Hoe, the Meadowbrook, the Fast Lane, the Stone Pony, etc (go here for a whole blog dedicated to those clubs). In any event, my buddies and I manged to find a spot on the floor directly in front on where Robin was standing.  As the night wore on, and the beer consumption increased, my friends swore that after each song, Robin was looking directly at me, smiling and trying to flirt.  Sure she was! Despite the beer, I was smart enough to know my friends were trying to get me to do or say something embarrassing.  In any event, the show was great and its a shame Robin and The Chartbusters never found mainstream success. This TV soundboard recording captures Robin back in Boston a few months prior to when I saw her, on March 3, 1980, 46 years ago today. Note - we originally posted this a few years ago but only had a single file of the whole performance.  This version has the tracks split out!

Joe Jackson 1980 - #2: As promised, here's the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entering featuring Joe Jackson in 1980. This one is an FM Broadcast from Boston from February 15, 1980, 46 years ago today. By the way, some confusion exists about this date. The download actually includes a 2nd copy of the show dated February 23.  Some sources say that February 23 was the broadcast date, with February 16 being the actual concert date. Others sources, however, indicate that the show was postponed from February 16 to February 23 because Joe was suffering from a sore throat. Whether February 16 or February 23 is correct, this concert features Angry Joe at his best.

Joe Jackson - 1980-02-15 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

Joe Jackson 1980 - #1: When Joe Jackson hit the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ on February 15, 1980, 46 years ago today, he was in full Angry Joe mode. He was touring in support of his first 2 albums, both released in 1979, Look Sharp and I'm The Man. And as I entered the theater for the show, I was hardly in a Valentine's Day mood. I was in the process of being dumped by a girlfriend, so I was ready for a defiant, edgy, punk, new wave performance.  And I got it.  Joe delivered a fiery set, propelled by Graham Maby's base, that included an unexpected cover of the Harder They Come!  Songs like Is She Really Going Out With Him and One More Time, delivered with reckless abandon, resonated perfectly with me. Download this soundboard recording of the show, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different show entry. `By the way, you can actually see the show here.

1980s - #1: Unfortunately, the first year of the 1980s spelled the end of the line for Rockpile after just 4 years together. Ironically, the end came at the very moment that the contractual obligations that once kept the band from recording together ceased being an obstacle. When Rockpile started touring together in 1976, its co-leaders, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds, were signed to different record labels. That prevented the band from releasing an album under its own name. Instead, they were forced to release albums either under Lowe’s name, such as Jesus of Cool and Labor of Lust, or Edmund’s banner, such as Trax on Wax and Repeat When Necessary. In fact, Jesus of Cool and Heart of The City both featured the same version of the song Heart of The City, but on the former album, the track featured Lowe’s lead vocals while on the latter, the record company dubbed in Edmund’s voice! When Edmunds finally fulfilled his contractual commitments in 1980, Rockpile was finally able to release an album. Unfortunately, the resulting disc, Seconds of Pleasure, while a solid effort, didn’t quite live up to the standard set by the earlier “solo” albums. It was the beginning of the end. By 1981, tensions between Lowe and Edmunds led to Rockpile calling it quits. This TV Sounboard rcording captures Rockpikle during that final year together, in Hamburg, on January 12, 1980, 46 years ago today.  NOTE: the original upload was missing a song.  That's been corrected!  New link up as of 2:30 pm, Monday, Jan 12.

I saw Rockpile just once, on July 8, 1979 at Belmont Race Track. I was 20 years old in the summer of 1979, and basically my life consisted of what girl could I date, what beer could I drink, and what concert could I get tickets to. I think I may have been most successful at the 3rd of those 3 things. In July, for example, I saw concerts on 3 straight Saturday nights, Stephen Stills on July 7, Jorma Kaukonen on July 14 and the Allman Brothers on July 21. Having dedicated Saturdays in July to classic rock, I used a Sunday to take in 2 of the "new wave" bands that were then all the rage. On Sunday, July 8, my buddies and I drove to Belmont Race Track in Long Island to catch a double bill of Blondie and Rockpile! I'll be honest, I don't remember much about the day for a variety of reasons. First, having seen Stephen Stills the night before, there were some after effects that lingered into Sunday, if you know what I mean. Second, the car ride took over 2.5 hours due to summer beach traffic, which didn't help my condition. Finally, it was hot as hell that day, which also didn't help me in overcoming the the residual effects from Saturday night. I do remember, however, the contrast in styles between the folks at Belmont for the concert and those who were there for the horse racing. On one hand, you had the 20 year old new wavers with big hair, funky glasses, neon colored, leggings, skinny ties, etc. On the other hand, you had old men, with cigars, in button down short sleeve shirts, looking like Oscar Madison from the Odd Couple. In any event, I don't really recall how well either band played that July afternoon, a real shame since I was (and still am) a huge fan of Rockpile, thanks in large part to Nick Lowe's Pure Pop For Now People disc (Jesus of Cool in the UK) and Dave Edmund's Repeat When Necessary album. I also remember, that Rockpile opened with the highly appropriate The Race is On! By the way, if you like what you just read, then you'll definitely enjoy my book!

This TV soundboard recording captures Rockpile about 18 months after I saw them, on the television program Fridays, on December 19, 1980, 45 years ago today. The show was the embodiment of the  television business being a copycat industry. ABC's show Friday's was theie unsuccsssful attempt to duplicate what NBC has done with Saturday Night Live. Launched in 1980, Friday's lasted just 2 years (SNL is still runninga half century after its launch in 1975!) but it did feature some excellent new wave and punk artists as musical guests.

1980s - #1: In August 1976, Elton John ended his Louder As A Concorde Tour with the record 7 shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden in August 1976 (the August 15 show was the catalyst for my book, Ten Rules Of The Road I Learned At My First Concert). He would play only 9 concerts in 1977 and would even announce his retirement at a November 3 show that year. The stress of writing, recording and touring had clearly caught up with Elton. The next time Elton toured, in 1979, he played smaller venues, such as the Palladium in New York, accompanied only by percussionist Ray Cooper. The shows were a return to an earlier, simpler time in his career. Elton finally returned to full band shows at 20,000 seat arenas in 1980, launching a world tour on September 4 that would take him to the US, New Zealand, and Australia.  This excellent audience recording, from legendary taper Mike Millard, captures Elton during the US leg, in Anaheim, on November 2, 1980, 45 years ago today.

We end our month ong tribute to Jerry Garcia with one more from the Grateful Dead, a first set excellent audience, a second set soundboard, tape from August 31, 1980, 45 years ago today, and about halfway through Jerry's 30 year long strange trip with the Dead. That year, the Dead celebrated their 15th anniversary and the shows during the 2nd half of the year, in San Francisco, New Orleans and New York that included an acoustic set, get most of the attention. But some pretty fine playing was going throughout 1980, as evidenced by the fact that portions of the May 6, 7, 15 and 16 shows, the entire September 3 show, and 2nd set of the September 4 show, and the entire November 28 and 30 shows, have all been officially released. This show captures then right before those September official releases so you know the band was in fine form.

While Elvis Costello was one of the 3 Angry Young Men of the new wave era (along with Joe Jackson and Graham Parker). Over time though, all he (and his 2 compatriots) moved away from that persona, diversifying his musical style. Costello’s 4th studio album, Get Happy, released in February 1980, was one of his ventures in a new direction. The songs on the album were influenced by both R&B and Soul music. In addition, the title may be a reference to gospel music, where the phrase "getting happy" is synonymous with receiving the Holy Spirit. Some sources claim that the R&B and Soul flavor of the disc was Costello’s way of making amends for racist comments he had made about James Brown and Ray Charles in a Febuary 1979 argument with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlet, comments that Bramlet had reported to the US news media. Costello denied that was his motivation, though it does seem like more than simply a coincidence. In any event, despite the change in style, the album went to #11 on the Billboard charts, just one slot lower than Costello’s previous disc, Armed Forces. This FM soundboard recording captures Costello on tour in support of Get Happy, at the Montreux Jazz Festival on Juky 12, 1980, 45 years ago today.

1980s - #5: When I was in college, I had a good friend who went to UMass, where thanks to WBCN, he was clued in to the energing punk and new wave scence. As the nught wore on, and the beer consumption increased, my friends swore that after each song, Robin was looking directly at me, smiling and trying to flirt. Sure she was! Despite the beer, I was smart enough to know my friends were trying to get me to do or say something embarrassing. In any event, the show was great and its a shame theat Robin and The Chartbusters never found mainstream success. This FM broadcast captures Robin a few months before I saw her live, at My Fathers Place, on May 27, 1980, 45 years ago today.
