As we’ve discussed in previous posts, the 2nd half of 1985 was difficult period for the Grateful Dead, as Jerry Garcia’s heroin addiction began to consume the guitarist. That said, the band could still rise to the occasion on some nights as evidenced in the official release of the November 1, 1985 show as part of the Dick’s Picks series. We’ve decided to bring you a soundboard from the night before the official release, October 31, 1985, 3 decades ago this very day. This one’s worth it just for the opener, a spacey jam into Werewolves of London, the perfect tune for Halloween night!

On October 12, 1981, U2 released its 2nd album, entitled appropriately, October! The record placed an emphasis on religion and spirituality, particularly in the songs Gloria, "With a Shout, and Tomorrow. The album met with mixed reviews and limited commercial success, in some part due to its theme As Bono declared in a 2005 interview Can you imagine your second album—the difficult second album—it's about God?". This FM broadcast captures U2 on tour in support of October in Amsterdam on October 12, 1981, 34 years ago today.

The Clash -1982-10-29 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

In May 1982, The Clash released the album Combat Rock, which went to #7 on the Billboard charts in the US. The disc was propelled up the charts by 2 singles, Should I Stay or Should I Go and Rock The Casbah, videos of which received extensive airplay on MTv. The band toured small clubs throughout the summer in support of the disc, then secured a spot as the lead-in for The Who for their “farewell” tour. On many of those dates, reviewers made it clear that they believed that The Clash upstaged the headliners! This soundboard recording captures The Clash on October 29, 1982, 33 years ago today, leading in for The Who in Los Angeles. Download this one to hear The Clash at what was, ironically, both the peak of their popularity and the beginning of the end, as they would soon disintegrate due to growing conflicts between the band members.

The Bangles - 1986-10-29 - Pittsburgh, PA (FM)

After gaining some recognition in 1984 with their debut album, All Over The Place, The Bangles found themselves on top of the rock world in 1986 after the release of their second disc, Different Light. The album reached number two on the Billboard Charts, and spawned four top 40 singles, including Manic Monday, which went to #2 in April, and Walk Like An Egyptian, which climbed to the top of the charts for 4 weeks in December. The band also received extensive airplay on MTV, furthering their popularity. The ride at the top would only last another 2 years, but it was fun while it lasted. This FM broadcast captures The Bangles at their peak,in Pittsburgh on October 29,1986, 29 years ago today.  Note - sveral sites have this listed as December 13 but based on my research the December date appears to be when it was broadcast while the actual show took place on October 29.

David Crosby - 1986-10-29 - Santa Cruz, CA (SBD)

A few months ago, we brought you a show from Houston in 1986, which was David Crosby’s first live performance after spending 8 months in jail for possession of drugs and an illegal weapon. Today we bring you a soundboard that capture Crosby on tour later that year, on October 29, 1986. 29 years ago today. Crosby would soon reunite with Stills, Nash & Young to record the album, American Dreams. Neil and David had made a pact - if Crosby went into rehab to kick his drug addictions, Young would rejoin his former band mates to work on a new album. The disc would eventually be released in November 1988, and go to #16 on the Billboard charts. Neil soon went off on his own once again, however, leaving fans waiting until 2000 for a CSNY reunion tour!

Rolling Stones - 1981-10-28 - Houston TX (SBD) 

As mentioned in other posts, soundboards from the Stone’s 1981 tour abound as the band taped every show in anticipation of releasing a live album and a concert film. In fact, perhaps more than any previous tour in rock history to that point, the Stones’ 1981 venture was about maximizing profits. The Stone’s became the first band to have a corporate sponsor for a tour. Jovan paid the band $1 million to advertise on every ticket printed. In addition, the December 18 show in Hampton, Virginia was the first concert ever broadcast on pay per view. To borrow from Frank Zappa, the tour could have been subtitled “we’re only in it for the money”. This soundboard recording captures the Stones on October 28, 1981, 34 years ago today.

As mentioned in our Elvis Costello post earlier this month, the angry young men of the 1970s punk movement found themselves branching out in new directions with the dawn of the new decade. In October 1980, Jackson released Beat Crazy, his third album, Jackson expanded his punk stylings to include reggae and ska, as evidenced in tunes such as In Every Dream Home and Battleground. He even foreshadows some his future Cole Porter style work, fully evident on the album Night & Day, in the tune, One To One. This FM broadcast captures Joe Jackson soon after the release of Beat Crazy, om October 27, 1980, 35 years ago today.

Earlier this month, we brought you a recording from the latter portion of the Born In The USA tour when Bruce and the E-Streeters were headlining 50,000 seat stadiums, Today, we visit the early stages of the tour with a high quality audience recording from October 26, 1984, 31 years ago today. This show was the 2nd of 7 nights in Los Angeles. A run topped only by his 10 night stand at the Byrne Arena in his home state in NJ. The title track to the album was released as a single during this run in Lo Angeles, and would climb to #9 on the Bill board charts, one of 7 tunes from the album to crack the top ten. The album was a major commercial and critical success, selling over 30 million copies worldwide and ranking at #85 on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 500 albums of all time.

Here’s one from the Dead’s historic stand at Radio City Music Hall in 1980. The band played 8 nights in total but just a year earlier, these show didn't seem possible. You see, for a brief moment in 1979, it looked like Radio City Music Hall, the landmark art deco theater nicknamed the Showplace of the Nation, would be closed and tuned into office space. More enlightened thinking prevailed and the theater was instead renovated and reopened in 1980. In addition to the physical transformation the building underwent, the venue also took a new approach toward booking acts. For the first time ever, rock and roll bands were added to the roster of performers that graced the hallowed theater. And the Dead's run was among the first! The Radio City Shows, along with ones previously performed at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco and the Saenger Performing Arts Center in New Orleans, commemorated the band’s 15th anniversary, and included an acoustic set to open the night. This soundboard captures the Dead during that historic Radio City stand, on from October 26, 1980, 35 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia Band – 1987-10-25 – Lunt-Fontanne, NY, NY (SBD + Ex Aud)

As mentioned in several earlier posts, Jerry Garcia made a miraculous comeback in 1987, escaping death’s door when he finally emerged from a diabetic coma. After re-teaching himself to play guitar, Jerry rejoined the Grateful Dead and the band embarked on one of their best tours in years. The fall 1987 shows, especially those at Madison Square Garden, were especially memorable, with the 9-18-1987 show (see last month) often being cited as one of the best of the decade. Soon after the fall tour ended, Garcia embarked on a new venture. Jerry took up residence at the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York’s Broadway district from October 15 to October 31.  Garcia played 18 concerts in 13 days, with 5 days featuring both the traditional Broadway matinee and a late show. Each show consisted of an acoustic set followed by an electric set. The 1500 seat theater that once housed the Sound Of Music and Hello Dolly had never quite seen anything like the crowd that attended a Garcia show. If you were not fortunate enough to see Garcia On Broadway, don’t despair. You can download this recording (acoustic set is a soundboard, electric set is an excellent audience) from October 25, 1987, 28 years ago today, and relive the magic! For an added bonus, Bob Weir joined Jerry at this show for the last 4 songs, including an incendiary encore of All Along The Watchtower, the only time the Jerry Garcia Band ever played that tune!

This high quality audience recording from October 25, 1988, 27 years ago today captures Sting on tour in support of the album Nothing Like The Sun. . The album went to #9 in the US, propelled to that spot by the single, We’ll Be Together, which rose to the #7 position on the Billboard charts. The disc did even better in other parts of the world, reaching the #1 position, for example, in the UK, Japan and Italy, as climbing to the #3 spot in France, Canada, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to We’ll Be Together, the album spawned 2 other top 100 singles in the US, Englishman in New York which charted at #84 and Be Still My Beating Heart, which rose to the #15 position. The album was inspired by 2 tragic events in Sting’s life - the death of his mother and the civil oppression in Latin America that he had witnessed while participating in a 1986 Amnesty International tour. The somber tone of the album, however, did not stop it from becoming Sting’s best selling disc worldwide, with sales of over 11 million copies.

Bruce Springsteen - 1980-10-24 - Seattle WA (HQ AUD)

Bruce Springsteen’s 1980/1981 River Tour is a study in contrasts, perhaps reflecting the nature of the album itself. The 2 record set was a mix of up tempo rockers such as Out In The Street and dark, haunting tunes such as the title track. Bruce described the album by saying "life had paradoxes, a lot of them, and you've got to live with them". His live performances also reflected this dichotomy. On the one hand, most shows had set lists over 30 songs long and often lasted 4 hours, cementing Bruce’s reputation for marathon performances. On the other hand, this tour is often forgotten when discussing Springsteen’s legacy, as it came in between the legendary 1978 Darkness Tour and the monumental Born In The USA run of shows. During the River tour, Bruce played to larger audiences than in the past, and even ventured to Europe where he began to build a new following. Yet, even as more people saw him live, the performances became less accessible to those without tickets, as the tour produced no live radio broadcasts, no live albums, and no concert videos or DVDs. As such, we’re bringing you a HQ audience recording from that tour, taped in Seattle on October 24, 1980, 35 years ago today.

U2 - 1984-10-23 - Nantes, France (SBD)

In October 1984, U2 released their 4th studio album, entitled The Unforgettable Fire. It would become a landmark disc for the band, as they overtly moved to change their musical style and direction. The separated from long-time producer Steve Lillywhite, and recruited in his place, Brian Eno. In place of the overt rockers from the War Album, were richer, more layer tunes, with lyrics that are more subtle, more open to interpretation. The disc received mixed reviews, as critics split over whether the U2’s change of direction was a success. The disc was without a doubt, however, a commercial success, reaching #12 on the Billboard charts while climbing all the way to the top spot in the US. In addition, U2’s tour in support of the album found the band playing larger, indoor arenas. Moreover, their performance at Live Aid on July 13, 1985, transformed them into international superstars. This soundboard recording captures U2 on October 23, 1984, 31 years ago today, near the start of the first European Leg of the Unforgettable Fire tour. November's Theme At So Many Roads

Believe it or not, November 2015 will mark the 6th Anniversary of So Many Roads.  To celebrate, our theme for November will be Bands I've Seen Live.  Yep, every post in November will be from an artist that I have seen in concert at some point between 1976 and 2015.  I think I've accounted for almost every band I've seen live except maybe 5 or 6 of them.  In order to capture as many of the band's I've seen as possible, we've drawn from all types of sources, including TV appearances where the artist may have played just 1 song live.  Of course, we've done our very best to ensure the audio quality is up to our normal standards!

By the way, as part of our theme, we'll bring you a host of shows from two of my very favorite rock artists - Paul McCartney and The Grateful Dead.

Grateful Dead - 1988-10-21 - Dallas TX (SBD)

In 1987, the Grateful Dead rode a new wave of popularity, spurred by the success of the In The Dark album in 1987 and the Touch Of Gray video, which thanks to extensive airplay on MTv brought the band a whole new generation of fans. As a result, in 1988, the band did something that no artist previously had done, namely sell out 9 nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden. I went to the first 8 of those September shows, only missing the September 24 Rain Forest benefit in order to attend a good friend’s 30th birthday bash. The band was not yet playing at the level that would mark the next 3 years, but if you listened closely, you could hear it coming, These fall 1988 shows all hint at the classics concerts that would emerge in 1989, 1990 and 1991. which we’ve discussed numerous times on this blog. This soundboard recording captures the band in Dallas on the last night of the Fall tour, just about 3 weeks after the Madison Square Garden run, on September 21, 1988, 27 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1984-10-20 - Syracuse, NY (SBD) 

For me, 1984 was another rare year when I didn’t attend a Grateful Dead concert. It was a difficult time for the band as Garcia’s health was beginning to fail due to his addiction to heroin. Video of Jerry often shows him slumped over his guitar, his hair messy and unkempt. Yet amidst these issues, the band still found those moments of magic that set them apart from any other live act. For example, we’ve brought you the July 13 show from Berkeley, where a shooting star inspired a Dar Star encore, the only time the song was played between 1981 and 1989! The October 12 show has been selected for release as part of the 30 Trips Around The Sun box set. This show captures the band just 8 days later, in Syracuse on October 20, 1984, 31 years ago today. Some of the magic from the October 12 show seems to have carried over to this one, as the band plays a monstrous Jack Straw, a funky Shakedown Street, a are Smokestack Lightning, a fiery Lovelight and a totally unexpected Revolution!

Much like Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones disappeared for huge chunks of the 1980s. In fact, when the band announced they were touring in late 1989, it marked their first US shows since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tension between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. This soundboard captures The Stones on October 19, 1989, 26 years ago today in Los Angeles. By the way, they are joined by Eric Clapton about half way through the show for a smoking version of Little Red Rooster.

As long time readers of So Many Roads know, we have had more than our fair share of Grateful Dead posts from 1987, the year when Jerry Garcia returned to full time touring after recovering from a diabetic coma. Of course, while 1987 gets most of the attention, jerry’s recovery actually began in the fall of 1986. In October that year, he played 4 shows at the Stone in San Francisco - October 4 and 5, and October 18 and 19 - his first live performances since his illness. This soundboard recording captures the third of those shows, on October 18, 1986, 29 years ago today. Download this one to hear Jerry’s miraculous return to the stage.

Eddie Money - 1986-10-18 - Los Angeles, CA (FM)

I'm wondering how many folks simply know Eddie Money as the guy in the Geico commercial who owns a travel agency. I give him a lot of credit for being able to poke some fun at himself in that commercial, singing lines to Two Tickets to paradise to a befuddled family! (They need 4 tickets and leave in 2 weeks, not tonight). In any event, Eddie rang up a pretty good career in the 1980s, inducing 4 platinum albums and 9 top 40 singles. His biggest hit was in Take me Home Tonight in 1986, which climbed all the way to #4 on the Billboard charts, That tune featured a duet with Ronnie Spector, who sings the chorus from her hit, Be My Baby. This FM broadcast captures Eddie in Los Angeles on October 18, 1986, 29 years ago today, just a few months after the release of Take Me Home Tonight.

Graham Parker - 1980-10-18 - Rockpalast, Essen, Germany (SBD)

On May 23, 1980, Graham Parker and the Rumour released the album The Up Escalator, the follow up to the critically acclaimed Squeezing Out Sparks. Interestingly, the cover simply credited the lead singer, with no mention of his long time back-up band. A further look at the personnel playing on the album revealed that long time Rumour keyboard player, Bob Andrews, had been replaced by fabled session pianist, Nicky Hopkins. The end was near for Graham Parker and the Rumour, though they geared up for one last tour together. This soundboard recording captures them at the famed Rockpalast in Germany, on October 18, 1980, 35 years ago today. The band plays almost the entire new album along with numerous classics such as Discovering Japan, Passion Is No Ordinary Word, Howlin' Wind and, my personal favorite, Hey Lord Don't Ask Me Questions. Elvis Costello - 1983-10-17 - London UK (FM)

From 1977 to 1983, Elvis Costello released an album every single year (and 2 in 1981), a feat more reminiscent of how bands operated in the late 1960s than how the rock world was evolving some 20 years after the Beatles debuted. Few band’s first 2 albums have ever matched the quality of the initial pair of releases by one of the original angry young punks, namely My Aim Is True and This Year’s Model. Costello, however, had talent and aspirations beyond the new wave/punk genre. His 1980 album Get Happy included numerous Soul influences, including a cover of Sam & Dave’s I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down. In 1981, he released Almost Blue, an album of country music covers. His 1983 album, Punch The Clock, featured female back up singers and the TKO horn section. This FM recording, from October 17, 1983, 32 years ago today, captures Costello backed by the Attractions and the TKO Horns, just about 2 montsh after the release of Punch The Clock. The horns had a unique touch to his earlier work, making this a must have for your collection.

Grateful Dead - 1981-10-16 - Amsterdam, Netherlands (SBD)

While The Europe 72 tour gets all the attention (and pehaps rightly so), the Grateful Dead played in Europe on several other occasions, including 1974, 1981, and 1990. In fact, their fall run in 1981 produced one of the most legendary gigs in the band’s history, this show at the Melk Weg in Amsterdam on October 16, 1981, 34 years ago today. The show was the 2nd of two nights at the Melk Weg and was also Bob Weir’s 34th birthday. Both shows at the Melk Weg were the impromptu affairs, unscheduled concerts at a small 1500 seat back alley club with the band using borrowed instruments! No wonder they were called the OOPS Concerts. Perhaps the spontaneity of it all inspired the band. First, they play an acoustic set, which they hadn’t done since the October 1980 shows and would rarely do again in the future. Second, the set list features a host of rare tunes, including the first ever “Spoonful,” the first “Gloria” since 1965, the one and only “Hully Gully” and Weir’s first turn on lead vocals on Lovelight. This one is so special that the download includes 4 different versions because I just couldn’t pick put which one sounds best. If you download one Dead show this month, make sure its this one!

Squeeze - 1985-10-15 - London, UK (FM)

In 1985, 3 years after disbanding, the 5 members of Squeeze who recorded Argy Bargy in 1980 - Difford, Tilbrook, Holland, Lavis, and Bentley - reformed for a charity gig in the UK. The concert was such a success that the band unanimously agreed to resume recording and touring as Squeeze. Searching for a different sound, however, the band replaced Bentley with bassist Keith Wilkinson. This new line-up released the 1985 album Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti, then launched a tour of the US and UK. This FM broadcast captures the band on the 2nd of two nights at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, on October 15, 1985, 3 decades ago today. Download this one to hear Squeeze on their comeback tour.
