In 1995, Joan Osbourne, became an "overnight sensation" released her 2nd album and first on a major label, entitled Relish. The disc went to #9 on the Billboard charts, propelled there by the single One Of Us, which climbed all the way to the #4 spot. The song received Grammy nominations in 1996 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. Of course, as with so many artists who were barnded "overnight sensations", Joan has toiled for years in small clubs, honing her craft and waiting for her big break.  This Excellent Audience recording creatures Joan some 4 years before her commercial breakthrough, in red Bank NJ on May 31, 1991, 29 years ago today.  Her set list features a host of amazing covers, including Son Of A Preacher Man, Me and Bobby McGee, Can't Help Falling In Love With You, Lady Madonna, Sweet Home Alabama, Summertime and .Drift Away.

Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time,  This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that disc, in Philadelphia on May 31, 1999, 21 years ago today.

To be blunt, I was less than happy when the Angry Joe Jackson of the late 1970s and early 1980s became Sentimental Joe with the release of songs like Stepping Out. I missed the unhappy, growling punk rocker behind songs such as I’m the Man, One More Time and Is She Really Going Out With Him. In 2003, however, Jackson reunited with Graham Maby, David Houghton and Gary Sanford, his original backing band, for an album entitled Volume 4. While not the success his early albums were, Volume 4 was a welcome return to Jackson’s original rock roots. This soundboard recording captures Jackson on tour on May 30, 2003, 17 years ago today, just about 2 months after the release of Volume 4. Download this one to hear Joe reach back to his glory days just “one more time”.

Neil  Young - 1999-05-29 - Austin, TX (Ex Aud)

On April 22, 1999, I saw Neil Young live at the Theater at Madison Square Garden,. The show was a solo acoustic performance, part of the An Evening with Neil Young Tour launched on March 2 of that year and ran until June 2. Over the course of the approximately 40 shows, Neil performed a total of 68 different songs. While I've yet to find a soundboard from the tour, a host of excellent audience recording are in circulation, such as this one from from Austin from May 29, 1999, 21 years ago today.

U2 - 2011-05-29 - Winnipeg,Canada (IEM)

On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales. The set list for the 2011 portion of the tour featured more songs from Actung Baby, to mark the 20th anniversary of that album. This IEM recording captures the band on May  29, 2011, 9 years ago today, in Canada.

As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, in Boulder on May 28, 1992, 28 years ago today.

Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012 that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. In 2013, they released their 2nd studio album, Made Up Mind, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard album charts. Then in January 2016, they released their 3rd studio album, Let Me Get By, which would eventually climb to #15 on the charts. Since Jerry Garcia's death in 1995 and the end of the original Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh has been among the most active of the former band members. Phil seems to always be out on tour, whether playing in one of the many Grateful Dead reunion runs (The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur) or fronting his ever rotating cast of new band mates know as Phil & Friends. By the way, over the years, those friends have included such rock heavy weights as Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi, just to name a few. I saw Billy Joel for the first time on June 23, 1990 at Yankee Stadium, just about 3 decades ago.  To be honest, while I like Billy's music, I probably wouldn't have gone except for 2 extenuating circumstance. First, I had never seen a concert at Yankee Stadium (though I had seen the Bronx Bombers plenty of times) so I thought that would be interesting.  Second, and far more important, I was dating my beautiful bride to be at the time and Billy Joel is one of her favorite musicians. She said I was good luck because he played Miami 2017, which she said was a rarity! Maybe that's why she married me! In any event, this FM broadcast is from a few week's earlier, at Wembley Stadium in London on May 26, 1990, 30 years ago today.  The set list includes a great mix of songs from the then recently released Stormfront album along with his earlier work.  By the way, Miami 2017 is conspicuous by its absence!

Darius Rucker, Dean Felber, Jim Sonefeld, and Mark Bryan all met as freshmen at the University of South Carolina in 1986. Like probably thousands of college kids across the country, they formed a band, dreaming but probably never expecting, to find fame and fortune. Eight years later in 1994,, when Hootie and the Blowfish released the album Cracked Rear View, could anyone have imagined, including the band, that the album would sell over 16 million copies? That makes it the 15th best selling album in history! Yes, I agree it's almost sacrilegious that Hootie's debut outsold such albums as Abbey Road, Born In The USA, Led Zeppelin II and Dark Side Of The Moon, just to name a few. No one is going to confuse Daruis and his compatriots with Lennon & McCartney when it comes to song writing. But, if everyone can put aside the Hootie backlash just for a few seconds (it's amazing how you can't find anyone who admits they bought the album even though it sold 16 million copies!), folks might recall why they were hooked in the first place. Namely, these guys wrote a host of catchy tunes, Darius has a unique voice, and they sound like the best bar band you ever heard. This FM broadcast captures them at the height of their popularity, live in Wolverhamption on May 26, 1995, a quarter century ago today!

During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir & Wassermann in their early days, on May 25, 1991, 29 years ago today, in Colorado.

Bruce Springsteen - 2009-05-23 - East Rutherford, NJ (IEM Matrix)

On April 1. 2009, Bruce Springsteen launched the Working On A Dream tour, the title taken from his album released in January of that year. Yet, despite the title, the tour featured very little material from the new disc. Instead the set list and themes were more comparable to the Magic tour from a year earlier, including a focus on current topics such as the great recession. Overall the tour was a critical and commercial success, but its conclusion would have a sad aftermath.. The tour would be Bruce’s last with Clarence Clemons at his side, as the saxophonist would pass away in 2011. This IEM matrix recording captures Bruce & the E-Streeters during that tour on their home turf in East Rutherford NJ, on May 23, 2009, 11 years ago today.  Download this one, therefore, to hear the end of an era, the last time the Boss and The Big Man would share the stage together.

Southside Johnny - 1993-05-22 - New Britain, CT (FM) 

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. While Southside never rose to the prominence that Springsteen achieved, the band remained a vibrant live force in the 1990s and beyond, touring almost non stop! This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to new Britain, CT on May 22, 1993, 27 years ago today.

Dave Mason - 2003-05-21 - Washington, DC (FM) 

To say Dave Mason has had an interesting rock & roll career would be an understatement. In the late 1960s, he was an on again, off again member of Traffic. Around that time, he played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's legendary version of All Along The Watchtower, In the 1970s and 1980s. he had a successful solo career,especially with his 1977 album, Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. For a brief time in the 1990s, Mason was a member of Fleetwood Mac, releasing the album Time with them in 1995. In 1997, he was scheduled to be a member of Ringo Starr'a All-Starr Band, performing Only You Know and I Know, We Just Disagree and Feelin Alright, but he was dropped from rehearsals before the tour started. That may explain why he doesn't always get the recognition he deserves as he didn't seem to be able to stick around with a band for more than a brief moment. That said, Mason has never stopped touring, playing upwards of 100 shows a year. This FM broadcast captures him in Washington DC on May 21, 2003,  17 years ago today.

Eric Clapton - 2001-05-21 - Atlanta GA (SBD)

When Eric Clapton went on tour in 2001, he announced that it would be his last world tour. Fortunately for all of us, he changed his mind and continues to play live on a regular basis. At the time though, he recorded many of the shows from this tour in anticipation of releasing a live album to commemorate his farewell from touring. In 2002, he released One More Car, One More Rider, a double live disc that featured tunes from his August 18 and 19, 2001 in Los Angles. This soundboard recording captures him a few months earlier, in Atlanta, on May 21, 2001, 19 years ago today.

Crowded House - 2010-05-20 - London, UK (FM)

In August 1986, Crowded House released their self titled debut album, which garnered only limited attention initially. In December 1986, however, the 4th single from the album, Don't Dream It's Over, became a huge hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album up to #12.  The follow up single, Something So Strong, also became a top 10 hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts.  The band broke up about 10 years after their debut, but then reformed after another decade passed in 2006, releasing the album, Tim On Earth.  they released their second album on their comeback in 2010, entitled Intriguer.  This FM broadcast captures the band in London previewing tracks from that disc, as well as playing their greatest hits, on May 20, 2010, a decade ago today.

Bob Dylan - 1998-05-19 - San Jose, CA (SBD)

On September 30, 1997, Bob Dylan released the album, Time Out Of Mind, his first recording of original material in over 7 years. For Dylan, the album marked his return to the top of the rock world. The album stayed on the Billboard charts for 29 weeks, climbing as high as number 10. It reached the same chart position in the UK. Time Out Of Mind won 3 Grammy’s at the 1998 awards show, including Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for Cold Irons Bound, one of the singles from the disc. Dylan went on a year long, world tour in support of the album in 1998 that would take him to North America (3 different legs), South America, Europe and Australia. This soundboard recording captures him on May 19, 1998, 22 years ago today, in San Jose near the end of the 2nd North American leg. Download this one to hear Mr. Zimmerman’s triumphant comeback. The album featured twelve cover versions of American country and western tunes and three original compositions. The disc debuted at #26 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and peaked at #7 on Top Country Albums chart. This FM broadcast captures Van the Man on tour in support of Pay The Devil in Germany on May 19, 2006, 14 years ago today.

In 1995, Elvis Costello released an album of cover tunes, entitled Kojak's Variety, which contained songs from artists as diverse as Willie Dixon, Burt Bacharach, Bob Dylan and Randy Newman, When the album was reissued in 2004, it contained a bonus disc that  included covers of such varied artists as The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, Bruce Springsteen and Van Morrison.  The Angry Young Man of Punk had come a long way in the 2 decades since his debut. This FM broadcast captures Costello on tour in suppiort of Kojak's Variety on May 17, 1995, a quarter century ago this very day.

The Bongos - 1996-05-16 - New York, NY (SBD)

In the early 1980s, punk and new wave music ruled the airwaves, helped along by the arrival of MTv. The Hobken music scene produced The Bongos, who in 1982, released the album Drums Along The Hudson, which featured a host of tunes, such as Bulrushes, Zebra Club and In The Congo, that blended guitar driven pop with a dance beat. They even received a nomination at the inaugural MTV Vido Music Awards for the tune Numbers Without Wings. The band broke up in 1987, but on May 16, 1996, 24 years ago today,  reunited for a benefit show, as captured in this soundboard recording, for Hoboken musician George Usher.

In March 2010, John Hiatt released the album The Open Road, receiving a strong review from Mark Deming at Allmusic who wrote "his tunes remain slinky and evocative and his stories of men either succumbing to or trying to overcome their lesser instincts still bear the ring of truth and never sound rote." The disc climbed to #72 on the Billbaord charts.  Ths FM broadcast captures Hiatt on tour in support of the disc, in Delawarre on May 15, 2010, a decade ago today.

Maria Mckee - 2007-05-14 - Gotenberg, Sweden (FM)

In the 1980s, Maria Mckee was the lead singer for Lone Justice, and is the voice that powered one of my favorite, and one of the most under rated tunes, in rock history. The tune Shelter, from the album of the same name, has every quality of a #1 single, yet it barely cracked the top 40. Maybe that's why soon after the song, and the album of the same name were released McKee broke up Lone Justice and started a solo career.  This FM broadcast captures her in Sweden on May 14, 2007, 1 years ago today.
