U2 1985 - Back to Back - #1: Live Aid on July 13, 1985 was a coming out party for U2. Their performance that day established them as a pre-eminent live group for the first time — something for which they would eventually become superstars. The band played a 14-minute rendition of "Bad", during which Bono jumped off the stage to join the crowd and dance with a girl. Twenty years later, in July 2005, the girl that he danced with revealed that he actually saved her life at the time. She was being crushed as the crowd pushed forwards. Bono saw her plight, and gestured at the ushers to help her. They didn't understand what he was saying, so he jumped down to help her himself. Bono, Edge and U2 have remained in the spotlight ever since that transcendent Live Aid performance. They continue to create amazing music and have taken active roles on political and social issues. Their post 9/11 concerts touched all of America. This soundboard recording, however, from March 27, 1985, 37 years ago today catches the band on the edge of stardom. It takes place less than 4 months before Live Aid, but you can hear the same electricity in their performance that the whole world would soon experience. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of theis Back To Back entry.

Dead Links, Download Hosts, and Re-Post Requests - Oh My!

Often times, new visitors to So Many Roads ask why numerous old posts have dead links. The answer is simple.  First, given that we have over 5000 shows posted on this site, it is next to impossible to keep all the links active, That would be a full time job and nothing new would get posted. Second, and maybe more important,  the free download hosts that I use simply do not store files for more than 30 to 60 days. And believe me, I have tried countless ones over the year -  from the original Megaupload to Zippyshare to Sendspace to Workupload to Solidfiles to our latest, Mirrored.to.  All have their pro's and con's, but none that I know of keep free files for more than 1 or 2 months day.

If you want to store files for longer, then you have to pay.  And that is simply not happening.  My wife already says this blog takes up too much of my time. She sure as hell isn't letting me pay monthly cloud storage fees.  And even if cost wasn't an issue, paying for storage doesn't mean all links will always stay active. Pay services usually limit how much data you can store in the cloud and may even limit how often a file can be downloaded. And they can cancel your service - deleting all your files and links - at any point if they think you are violating their terms of service.  That just happened to a fellow blogger a few months ago.

All that said, if you are looking for a re-up of a show, feel free to leave a request in the comments section of the post. We have a formal re-post policy here at So Many Roads (see sidebar) which really consists of just 2 things:
  1. Please be polite when you ask for a re-post.  Leaving a coment like "Dead Link" is a statement of fact, not a request. I really do appreciate a "please" or a "thanks in advance" as part of your request. A little kindness goes a long way.
  2. Please don't ask me to re-post every show by a particular artist. Remember, you're not the only person asking. I can handle requests for a show or two, but if you are asking me to re-post dozens of dead links, I simply won't be able to handle that.
I hope all the above helps!  Remember - be kind and enjoy the tunz!

Re-post Day: March 26

As long time followers of So Many Roads know, our blog takes a "this day in history" approach to selecting shows. In other words, if it's January 1, than the concert we post took place on January 1, sometime between 1950 and the present day.

Every now and then, a day rolls by and we don't have a new show associated with that date. Some times we've gotten around that by posting my monthly column on that day. Other times, we've used some other type of informational post.

Well, in the spirit of trying something new, this time around, since I don't have a new show to post on March 26, I've re-posted download links for many of the prior shows we posted on that date. Those shows are listed below - because its our anniversary month, I piced a repost day with lots of shows to share! All you have to do is search for the show you want - just copy and paste it from the list below into the search box in the upper corner of the blog - and when you get there, you'll find a new link!

Enjoy the tunz!

Grateful Dead 1991 - Back To Back - #1: As long time readers of this blog know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991. The number of official releases from that period is a testament to the caliber of the band's performances in that era, as they include:
  • a show from Philadelphia from July 7, 1989
  • the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
  • The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
  • the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989
  • the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
  • the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990
  • the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990;
  • 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety besides Europe 1972
  • a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
  • a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
  • the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990.
  • a show from Paris from October 27, 1990
  • a show from Washington DC from June, 14, 1991
  • the Giants Stadium shows from June 16 and 17, 1991
  • a show from Pine Knob from June 20, 1991
  • a show from Madison Square Garden from September 10, 1991, featuring Bradford Marsalis
  • a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991
Without a doubt, those 3 years marked the last great run of the Dead's incredible career. So with that as backdrop, we'll bring you  3 shows from the Dead's Spring 1991 run, all from Albany where the band always seemed to play well, starting with this soundboard recording from March 23, 1991, 31 years ago today. Download this one, then stop back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back set.

Allmans 1997 - Back to Back - #1: Between 1989 and 2014, the Allmans Broters Band played over 170 shows at the Beacon Theater in New York City. Thier annual residency, usually in March, became the stuff of legends. The band even celebrated their 40th anniversary at the venue, with 15 sold out shows packed with guest stars.  This soundboard recording catures the Allmans during their 1997 run at the Beacon, on March 21, 1997, a quarter century ago today.  The shows marked the end of Warren Hayne's initial tenue with the band, as he left to focus more energy on his band, Gov't Mule, though Warren would eventually return to the Allmans in 2000.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Slowhand 2001 - Back To Back - #1: When Eric Clapton went oit in the road in 2001, he announced that it would be his last world tour. Fortunately for all of us, he changed his mind and continues to play live on a regular basis. At the time though, he recorded many of the his 2001 performances in anticipation of releasing a live album to commemorate his farewell from touring. In 2002, he did just that,  releasing One More Car, One More Rider, a double live disc that featured tunes from his August 18 &19, 2001 concerts in Los Angles. This excellent audience recording captures him a few months earlier, in Paris, on March 20, 2001, 21 years ago today.  Download this one, the come back tomorrow for the 2nd part of this Back To Back set.

Roger McGuinn 1992 - Back To Back - #1:  In January 1991, Roger McGuinn released his 6th solo stdio album, Back from Rio. Over a decade had passed since McGuinn's previous solo album Thunderbyrd. Back to Rio was issued following the release of the Byrds box set and musically it leans on the sound of McGuinn's former band,s, thanks to 12-string electric guitar and vocal contributions from ex-Byrds David Crosby and Chris Hillman. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers also made significant contributions to the disc. Petty co-authored and sang with McGuinn on the album's lead single King of the Hill while members of the Heartbreakers provided musical backing on a number of tracks. Other prominent songwriters on the album are Elvis Costello, Jules Shear and Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics. The album was generally well received by music critics and it peaked at #44 on the Billboard 200 album chart. McGuinn toured through out 1991 and 1992 in support of the album. This soundboard recording captures him in New Haven on Macrh 18, 1992, 3 decades ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back to Back set.

JGB 1978 - Back To Back - #2:  Forty four years ago today, on March 17, 1978, I experienced 2 "firsts" in my concert "career" - I made my initial visit to the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ, and I saw the Jerry Garcia Band for the first time. As I mentioned in our earlier post today, The Capitol was unlike any other concert venue I'd ever visit. Located in a downtrodden section of Passaic, the venue was a X-rated movie theater during the day! John Scher, one of rock's legendary promoters, started producing shows at the 3200-seat Capitol in 1971, soon after the Filmore East closed.  For a complete history of the Capitol, including copies of playbills and a list of every show ever at the venue, go here. Jerry's performance that March 1978 night made my first visit to the Capitol one I'd never forget. The band was in one of those zones, where every thing they attempted went right, including stellar versions of The Harder They Come, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Tore Up and Rhapsody In Red. I spent the last 40 years looking for a tape of this concert to no avail, until Catfish John, a regular visitor to this site, who takes his on-line name from a Jerry tune, came across this recently surfaced soundboard of the show. While its missing the opening tune, The Harder They Come, I was able to add that from an excellent audience recording. To hear it again brought back a host of great memories and reminded me why I spend so much time collecting bootlegs and writing about concerts!. Thanks Catfish for a wonderful gift

JGB 1978 - Back To Back - #1: On March 17, 1978, 44 years ago today, I made my first of many sojourns to the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ to see the Jerry Garcia Band's late show at the Capitol Theater. We'll detail more about that in our 2nd post today. The Capitol was unlike any concert hall in world. Rock and roll venue by night, the Capitol was an x-rated movie theater by day.  The theater was owned and run by legendary concert promoter John Scher. In many ways, Scher was to the East Coast what Bill Graham was to the west, though on a bit smaller scale. He was gruff, egotistical and had to appear at every show he promoted, to announce to the crowd upcoming events, all in a nasally voice and tone that grated on the ears. He could get even the largest acts, such as Springsteen, the Who and The Stones, to play the 3200 seat Capitol. No Grateful Dead or JGB show took place on the East Coast with Scher’s involvement. On Dick’s Pick’s 15, you can hear him introduce the Dead at their historic show in Englishtown on September 3, 1977. Scher even bailed Jerry Garcia out of jail when Garcia and Robert Hunter ran were arrested one night in New Jersey for smoking pot! While waiting to head out to the late show that night, my buddies and I listened to WNEW-FM as they aired the early show!  Hard to beleive bands would play two shows a night back in the 1970s!  In any event, download this FM broadcast recording now and come back at 4 pm for the late show!
