In addition to The Pretenders, Rock Day at the 1983 US Festival featured another new wave band that was looking to make a name for itself, namely U2.  Maybe the organizers had a sense of what the future held, because as we all know, U2 became one of rock's biggest acts. In fact just 6 days later, at a concert at Red Rocks, during Sunday Bloody Sunday, Bono would wave a large white flag through a sea of crimson mist in what Rolling Stone would call one of rock's iconic moments. The Pretenders - 1983-05-30 - Devore, CA (FM)

We'll finish May with 2 final new wave posts, both from May 30, 1983. Over Memorial Day Weekend 1983, Steve Wozniak of Apple hosted the 2nd US Festival (the first has been discussed here) at Glen Helen Regional Park near Devore, California.  Over 650,000 people attended the 3 day event, and Wozniak lost over $12 million!  Each day featured a different musical genre.  Opening Day, May 28 was New Wave Day, with such acts as The Clash, English Beat, INXS, Flock of Seagulls, Stray Cats and Men At Work.  I'm not quite sure how the last 2 qualified as New Wave!  Day 2, was Heavy Metal Day and included Van Halen, Ozzy, and Judas Priest.  Finally, day 3 was Rock Day (as if the other 2 days weren't rock??) and featured  U2, David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Joe Walsh and, this post's featured band, the Pretenders.  This FM broadcast captures The Pretenders full set from the US Festival on May 30, 1983, 29 years ago today, which includes Middle of The Road and Back On the Chain Gang, 2 songs form their soon to be released album Learning to Crawl.  Download this one and go back to the time when Apple simply made computers, and not Ipods, Ipads and Iphones!

From 1979 to 1981, Los Angeles hosted Survival Sunday, an anti nuclear benefit concert featuring some of the rock’s biggest names. The inaugural show in 1979 included Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Graham Nash, who had also participated in the 1979 No Nukes rally. For the 2nd Survival Sunday, held on May 25, 1980, 42 years ago today, Nash was back, and he brought with him David Crosby and Stephen Stills. In addition, Joe Walsh made an appearance, playing 2 solo tunes and joining Stills for 2 more. Bruce Springsteen - 1988-05-22 - Madison Square Garden (HQ Aud)

When I went to see Bruce Springsteen on May 23 19, 1988, I was expecting another of his high energy, full tilt boogie, rock and roll celebrations. Instead, I got darkness and pain. Perhaps the "This is a dark ride" sign that appeared on the stage as the band entered should have been a tip off. From the tone of lost love in many of the songs from the Tunnel of Love disc, to an angry version of Born In the USA, to an acoustic, stripped bare version of Born To Run, this was a different Bruce Springsteen. With the benefit of hindsight, it's now easy to see why. We know now that Tunnel of Love was about the disintegration of his marriage to Julianne Phillips. We know as well that Bruce was going through other dramatic personal changes at the time, which would lead, in the next 12 months, to dissolving the E Street Band (fortunately only temporarily) and moving from his NJ roots to LA with new love and future wife, Patti Scialfa. It was a time where one chapter was ending and a new one beginning. While I couldn't find a bootleg of the March 19 show that I attended, I do have this excellent audience tape from 1 night earlier at the Garden, May 22, 1988. The set list and mood mimic the concert I was at. Download it for a glimpse inside Bruce and the band at a moment just before their temporary breakup.

Greg Kihn - 1985-05-21 - Boston, MA (FM)

When is a new wave post not a new wave post? When it includes Greg Kihn! When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, The Cars, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, and Nick Lowe, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new artist became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn was sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. Dave Edmunds - 1983-05-18 - New York (FM)

In May 1983, Dave Edmunds was 2 years, and 2 albums, removed from his work with Nick Lowe and Rockpile.  He put together a new band, which included guitarist Mickey Gee, bassist John David, pianist Geraint Watkins, and drummer Dave Charles. That group would record and tour with Edmunds throughout the rest of the 1980s.  He had also switched record labels during that 2 year span, moving from Swan Song to Arista.  Amidst all that change, one thing stayed the same -- Edmunds' ability to play good old straight ahead rock and roll.   This FM broadcast captures Edmunds and his new band at the Roseland Ballroom in New York on May 18, 1983, 29 years ago today.  In addition to songs from his 2 post Rockpile albums (DE7 and Information), Edmunds also plays tunes from his days with Nick Lowe, as well as his 1970 hit, I Hear You Knockin'.  Download this one, turn it up loud, and remember why you love rock & roll.

Another New Wave post and another So Many Roads debut, as we feature a soundboard recording of Squeeze from May 15, 1981, 31 years ago today. The set list includes 2 songs, Messed Around and Is That Love from East Side Story, the band’s 4th album, released on that same day. East Side Story was also their first disc since Paul Carrack replaced Jools Holland on keyboards. The disc went to #44 on the US Billboard charts, the band’s highest charting disc. In addition, the single Tempted, sung by Carrack, went all the way to #8 on the charts. East Side Story marked the high point of the band’s success. Carrack would leave the band soon after the album was released. Their follow up disk, Sweets From A Stranger, would produce a minor hit, Black Coffee In Bed, but otherwise have little to offer. By the end of 1982, Squeeze would disband. Download this show, therefore, to hear Squeeze at the height of their popularity.

Welcome to another New Wave post this month, and our first post ever at So Many Roads featuring the B52s. On April 27, 1983, The B52s released their 3rd studio album Whammy, which was an effort by the band to return to the sound of their debut album while simultaneously incorporating drum machines and synthesizers. The album rose to #29 on the US charts, and reached the #33 position in the UK. Critical opinion of the album was mixed. For example, Robert Christgau rated the disc and A- while Rolling Stone gave it only 3 out of 5 stars. Shortly after the album’s release, the B52s appeared at the Rockpop Festival in Dortmund, Germany on May 14, 1983, 29 years ago today. This soundboard recording features that entie set, including 2 songs from Whammy, Song For A Future Generation and Big Bird, as well as 5 tunes from earlier in their career. Elvis Costello - 1980-05-14 - London, UK (FM)

Here’s our 3rd new wave post for May, this time featuring Elvis Costello. As mentioned in the Joe Jackson post earlier this month, Costello was one of the 3 Angry Young men of the new wave era. Over time though, all 3 moved away from that persona, diversifying their musical styles. Costello’s 4th studio album, Get Happy, released in February 1980, was one of his ventures in a new direction. The songs on the album were influenced by both R&B and Soul music. In addition, the title may be a reference to gospel music, where the phrase "getting happy" is synonymous with receiving the Holy Spirit. Some sources claim that the R&B and Soul flavor of the disc was Costello’s way of making amends for racist comments he had made about James Brown and ray Charles in a Febuary 1979 argument with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlet, comments that Bramlet had reported to the US news media. Costello denied that was his motivation, though it does seem like more than simply a coincidence. In any event, despite the change in style, the album went to #11 on the Billboard charts, just one slot lower than Costello’s previous disc, Armed Forces. This FM broadcast captures Costello on tour in support of Get Happy, on mAy 14, 1980, 32 years ago today. The show opens with the most famous track from Get Happy, I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down, and includes 5 other tunes from that disc. Led Zeppelin - 1988-05-14 - New York, NY (SBD)

The start of the decade the 1980s spelled the untimely end of Led Zeppelin as a result of the tragic death of drummer John Bonham on September 24, 1980 when he over drank, vomited while passed out, and choked. The 3 remaining members of th band reunited only on a few select occasions, preferring to leave Led Zep in their past.  One such moment was Live Aid in 1985, when Phil Collins filled in on drums.  They also played together at their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.  Another reunion took place in December 2007 at the O2 Arena in London for a tribute concert for Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records, Led Zep's label, who had died a year earlier.  This soundboard recording captures a 4th Led Zep reunion, on May 14, 1988, 24 years ago today. Plant, Page, and Jones, joined by Bonham's son Jason on drums, headlined a concert at Madison Square Garden to celebrate Atlantic Record's 40th anniversary.  Also on the bill that night were CSN, the Bee Gees, Phil Collins, Genesis, Yes, Foreigner and The Rascals, just to name a few, but it was the mighty Led Zep that closed the 23 hour marathon, a tribute to their place in rock history.

Santana - 1988-05-11 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

The late 1980s were not kind to Santana.  Some 20 tears after they burst on the music scene, the band's albums barely made an impact on the Billboard charts.  Beyond Appearances, released in 1985, only went to #50, while  Freedom, rleeased in 1987, barely cracked the top 100, peaking at #95.  critical reviews of the 2 discs were just as bad.  Rolling Stone wrote that "Beyond Appearances hardly bears consideration on any level. " Allmusic wrote that "Freedom was a literal return to form, but, unfortunately, not to the quality of early Santana albums." Santana would endure another decade of commercial and critical disappointment, before the album Supernatural stunned everyone in 1999 by climbing to #1 on the charts. In the interim, unable to make any magic in the studi0, Carlos did what he did best - perform live, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from May 11, 1988, 2 dozen years ago today.

So Many Roads Celebrates 2 1/2 Years

Today marks 2 1/2 years since So Many Roads To Ease My Soul launched on the web on November 11, 2009.  In that time, we've brought you over 600 concerts from the years 1956 though 2001, featuring music from well over 125 different artists.  We've had over 500,000 visitors from 145 different countries around the world.  Nearly 800 people a day visit the site.  All in all, its been a good ride that we plan to continue for as long as we can.

By the way - the best part of running this blog, and the thing that keeps me going are the wonderful comments from our readers.  I've posted a handful below as my way of saying thanks for the thanks. I appreciate all the feedback and look forward to sharing the tunz for years to come!

The Clash - 1981-05-10 - Amsterdam, Netherlands (FM)

Welcome to our first of many Punk and New Wave posts in keeping with one of our 3 themes for May! On December 12, 1980, The Clash released Sandanista, a triple album featuring 36 songs. The disc featured a diverse mix of musical styles, including punk, reggae, rockabilly, folk, jazz, R&B and rap. In order to get the record company to release a 3 album set at an affordable price, the band did not take any royalties on the first 200,000 copies that were sold. For The Clash, Sandanista was a pivotal disc as it followed on the heels of London’s Calling, their 1979 double album that was widely hailed as one of the finest records in rock history. While Sandanista wasn’t quite that good, it still wound up being selected as the album of the year by the Village Voice. Critic Robert Christgau said of the album "if this is their worst -- which it is, I think -- they must be, er, the world's greatest rock and roll band" and gave the album an A-. The band launched a European tour in April in support of the disc, including this performance from Amsterdam, 33 years ago today on May 10, 1981. Unfortunately, this FM broadcast is not the complete concert, but even so, when you download it you’ll immediately understand why the Clash were often billed as “the only band that matters”.

David Crosby & Stephen Stills - 1987-05-09 - Austin, TX (SBD)

This post is an interesting one for several reasons. First, it features David Crosby and Stephen Stills, who spent a lifetime playing together in CSN and CSNY but rarely performed as a duo. Second, the information file that accompanied this show billed it as The Cowboys For Indians Benefit. I finally uncovered that this show was a SEVA benefit concert. The SEVA foundation, an international health organization, is best known for its work in Africa and Asia, but began helping Native American communities in the US in 1982. Since 1979, rock musicians have partnered with SEVA to raise funds.  Artists such as the Grateful Dead, The Band, Bruce Hornsby, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Graham Nash, Country Joe McDonald, Maria Muldaur and Paul Simon, just to name a few, have participated in dozens of shows over the last 33 years (go here for more on SEVA benefit concerts). In addition to Crosby and Stills, The Cowboys For Indians Benefit featured David Lindley, Jerry Jeff Walker, Timbuk Three, Jimmy Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Max Gail, Peter Rowan, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Wavy Gravy & Charlie Hill. Third, my research uncovered that the show did not take place on February 5, 1987, as originally indicated in the notes and on the artwork, but rather on May 9 of that year, 25 years ago today. This FM broadcast from May 6, 1988, 24 years ago today, features Sting in Verona, Italy on tour in support of the album Nothing Like The Sun. The album went to #9 in the US, propelled to that spot by the single, We’ll Be Together, which rose to the #7 position on the Billboard charts. The disc did even better in other parts of the,world, reaching the #1 position, for example, in the UK, Japan and Italy, as climbing to the #3 spot in France, Canada, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to We’ll Be Together, the album spawned 2 other top 100 singles in the US, Englishman in New York which charted at #84 and Be Still My beating Heart, which rose to the #15 position. As mentioned in the Buenos Aires concert post, the album was inspired by 2 tragic events in Sting’s life - the death of his mother and the civil oppression in Latin America that he had witnessed while participating in a 1986 Amnesty International tour. The somber tone of the album, however, did not stop it from becoming Sting’s best selling disc worldwide, with sales of over 11 million copies. For almost 30 years, The Bottom Line, owned by Allan Pepper and Stanley Snadowski, was a Mew York institution, a 400 seat nightclub on the corner of West 4th Street and Mercer that featured some of the greatest rock and roll ever played. It was the venue where Bruce Springsteen went from NY musician to the covers of Time and Newsweek. It was the place where Carlos Santana and Van Morrison both choose in 1978 to debut new material and revitalize their careers. It was the establishment where Lou Reed recorded the album Live: Take No Prisoners and Harry Chapin held played his 2000th concert. While the Bottom Line is now long gone, its spirit lives on in the tapes of the countless live shows that were broadcast from the venue, usually on WNEW-FM in NY.  this FM Broadcast of Squeeze from May 3, 1980, 32 years ago today.
