Two old friends reunited for 2 shows at the Fox Theater in Oakland on March 31 and April 1, 2012.  For Bruce Hornsby and Bob Weir, who had played together in the Grateful Dead and the Other Ones, these 2 shows marked the first time time just the 2 of them at appeared on stage together.  The performances were billed as Alone and Together, as both Bruce and Bob played solo sets, followed by a 3rd set where they joined up to recapture some magic from their days together with the Dead. This high quality audience recording captures the first of those 2 shows, on March 31, 2012, 7 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1969-03-30 - Jacksonville, FL (SBD)

The question - when is an Allman Brothers concert not quite an Allman Brothers concert?  The answer -- when it takes place 4 days after the band was founded, but without Greg Allman!  In early 1969, while Greg Allman was spending time in California, Duane was playing in Florida with a band called Second Coming, which included Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Jai Johanny Johanson and Butch Trucks  In March, Greg returned to Florida, and joined the band on March 26 at the legendary Jacksonville Jam.  Thus, The Allman Brothers Band was born that fateful day!  Four days, later, however, on March 30, 1969, a half century ago today, the band played another show in Jacksonville, this time with Reese Wymans on keyboards!  Best I can tell from the Allman's website, this might have been the last show ever played without Greg Allman!  So, download this soundboard recording to capture a unique moment in the Allman's long and storied history.

Rolling Stones - 1966-03-29 - Paris, France (SBD)

On March 26, 1966, the Rolling Stones launched a short European tour, which consisted of just 12 shows and ended on April 5.  The band had just finished up recording sessions for the next album Aftermath, as well as their soon to be released single, Paint It Black. As was the practice at the time, the single was not included on the new album! The Stones did not perform any of their new material during the European tour - those songs would get their first live performances during the Spring 1966 US Tour, after the release of Aftermath.   This soundboard recording captures the Stones during that European tour, in Paris on March 29, 1966, 53 years ago today.

The single Soak Up the Sun reached #1 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and climbed to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of her biggest hits since All I Wanna Do. The album received 4 Grammy nominations, winning one for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the tune Steve McQueen. In March 2008, the Counting Crows released their 5th studio album, entitled Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. The disc is thematically divided into two sides: the rock music of Saturday Nights and the more country-influenced Sunday Mornings. Vocalist and lyricist Adam Duritz stated that the album "is about really wanting to mean something and failing to do it. You want your life to mean something. You want to be somebody and then what you turn out to be is so much less than what you thought you were going to be." The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200, selling 106,00 copies in its first week.  To support the album, the band did a series of TV and radio appearances including The View, Good Morning America, A&E Private Sessions, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Late Show with David Letterman and the The Howard Stern Show.  This FM broadcast captures that Stern show appearance, on March 27, 2008, 11 years ago today.

Emerging from the San Francisco music scene in 1967, Santana was renown in the Bay Area for his live performances at venues such as the Fillmore. In June 1983, after a 7 year hiatus since the Last Waltz concert on November 25, 1976, The Band reunited. Well, at least 4/5 of The Band did, as Robbie Robertson decided to continue his solo ventures rather than rejoin Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm and Richard Manuel. The seeds of that reunion were sown back in the winter of that year when Danko and Helm launched a tour together that ran through April. This soundboard recording captures the duo in Berkeley on March 25, 1983, 3 dozen years ago today.

Eric Clapton - 1978-03-24 - Charlotte, NC (SBD)

In November 1977, Eric Clapton released the album Slowhand, the title taken from his well known nickname. The album was both a critical and commercial success, reaching #2 on the Billboard charts and drawing comparisons to his masterful 461 Ocean Boulevard disc. Slowhand included soon to become Clapton standards such as Cocaine, Lay Down Sally, Wonderful Tonight and The Core.  In early 1978, EC took the road in support of Slowhand,  launching a North American tour on February 1.  This soundboard recording captures him on the 2nd leg of that tour, in Charlotte on March 24, 1978, 41 years ago today. Four of the opening 5 songs are from Slowhand, and later in the set, Cocaine also makes an appearance.  The night closes though with classic Eric, drawing on his days with The Dominos for songs such as Key To The Highway, Layla and Bottle Of Red Wine.  Download this one to get a great mix of EC's newest work and his historic past.

James Taylor spent a good portion of the 1980s lost both musically and personally, as his marriage to Carly Simon disintegrated and he battled his addiction to heroin.  As the decade neared it close, and the 1990s began, however, a now sober and clean JT began to rebuild his musical career.  In 1988, he released Never Die Young, which reached #25 on the Billboard charts. Then in 1991, the album New Moon Shine went platinum and spawned 2 hit singles on the Adult Contemporary charts, in the he melancholic Copperline and the upbeat (I've Got to) Stop Thinkin' About That.  He began touring regularly, especially on the summer amphitheater circuit. Those tours yielded the 1993 live double album, appropriately title Live, which reached #20 on the charts.  This FM broadcast captures Taylor during this career renaissance, in Uruguay on March 25, 1994, a quarter century ago today.

Neil Young - 1992-03-22 - Upper Darby PA (HQ Aud)

After a series of hard rocking albums with Crazy Horse in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Neil Young returned to his acoustic roots with 1992’s disc, Harvest Moon. The album was Neil’s 20th studio disc, and in name, tone, and supporting cast, harkened back to his landmark recording Harvest, released 2 decades prior. Ben Keith, Tim Drummond and Kenny Buttrey backed Neil on Harvest Moon, just as they had on Harvest. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor made guest appearances on the 1992 disc, just as they had on its 1972 predecessor. Interestingly, 3 folks who played on Harvest that did not appear on Harvest Moon were Neil’s sometime band mates, Crosby, Stills and Nash. In any event, Harvest Moon climbed to #16 on the Billboard charts, and received a four star review from Rolling Stone. AllMusic wrote that the title track was “positively gorgeous". In addition, Classic Rock Review named Harvest Moon its album of the year for 1992. In March 1997, U2 released the album Pop, which continued the band’s experimentation with a variety of musical styles, including alternative rock, techno, dance and electronica. The album employed a variety of production techniques relatively new to U2, including sampling, loops, programmed drum machines and sequencing. The band experienced numerous difficulties in completing the album, missing the original November 1996 release date and barely finishing production before the start of their Pop Mart tour in April 1997. In the end, both the album and the subsequent tour met with mixed reviews from critics and fans. Long time U2 fans did not know what to make of the songs from the new album. While many of the special effects and elaborate staging at the concerts were designed to poke fun at popular culture, the jokes often missed their mark, and simply confused those in attendance. In fact, after the tour ended, U2 announced it would begin “reapplying for the job of best band in the world.” This soundboard recording captures U2 in South Africa on March 21, 1998, 21 years ago today, on the last night of the Pop Mart tour. While Dave Edmunds had his greatest commercial and critical success in the late 1970s and early 1980s, especially while working with Nick Lowe and Rockpile, he continued to record and perform as the century turned. Edmunds often found himself playing live in collaborative ventures with other rock stars. For example, in 1990, he hosted the Rock & Roll Revue, which also featured Kim Wilson (Fabulous Thunderbirds), Graham Parker and Dion. He was a member of both the 1989 and 1999 versions of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. That said, Edmunds still found time for some solo shows, such as this one on March 20, 2000, 19 years ago today, in Sweden, as captured i n this FM broadcast.

Elton John - 1982-03-19 - Sydney, Australia (SBD)

If the 1970s were the pinnacle of Elton John's commercial and artistic success, then the 1980s were the low point. While he still had several successful singles in that decade, such as I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues, Sad Songs and I Don't Wanna Go On with You Like That (all which made the Billboard Top 5, though none climbed all the way to number 1), not one of his albums could crack the top 10. His 1982 disc, Jump Up, perfectly symbolized the decade. On the one hand, two singles from the album, Blue Eyes, and Empty Garden (his tribute to the late John Lennon), both cracked the top 15 on the charts. On the other hand, lyricist Bernie Taupin called Jump Up "one of our worst albums," adding "it’s a terrible, awful, disposable album, but it had Empty Garden on it, so it's worth it for that one song." While Elton's studio work was a bit hit or miss, he could still put on as good as live show as anyone in the business. He toured extensively in support of Jump Up, playing 115 concerts in 1982 in Australia, Europe and North America. Most significantly, the tour reunited him with Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson, the backing band that was with him on almost all his classic albums from the 1970s. This soundboard recording captures Elton during that tour, in Australia,on March 19, 1982, 37 years ago today.

In late 1966 and early 1967, the Jimi Hendrix Experience toured extensively in England, electrifying crowds with their musical virtuosity and charismatic performances. Fellow musicians such as Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton became huge proponents of Hendrix.  In March 1967, he ventured from England to Germany, playing 3 nights, March 17, 18 and 19, at the Star Club in Hamburg.  The Star Club had become legendary for hosting the Beatles in the spring and winter of 1962, right before Beatlemania took the world by storm!  While no tapes are available of any of the 3 shows at the Star Club, we do have this soundboard recording of a radio broadcast that Jimi did from Hamburg on March 18, 1967, 52 years ago today. The set includes 5 Hendrix classics, songs which would finally become legendary in the US just a few months later, when Jimi played Monterrey!

On January 12, 1969, Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut album, and rock and roll was never the same again. Over the next 10 years, Led Zep would become one of the immortal bands in rock history, as their fusion of rock and the blues launched what would eventually become known as heavy metal. Their first album featured songs that would become staples of their live performances for years to come, including Good Times Bad Times, Dazed and Confused, Black Mountain Side, and Communication Breakdown. While at the time, the album received largely negative reviews, today, critics are almost unanimous that the album was one of the finest debut discs ever recorded. The Times in London ranked it as the 41st greatest album of all time, while Rolling Stone magazine placed it in the #29 position on its list of the top 500 best albums. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of it debut disc in Denmark on March 17, 1969, a half century ago this very day.

In February 1980, Squeeze released the album Argy Bargy, which helped the band finally breakthrough in the US and had some critics hailing Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook as the new Lennon & McCartney. While that praise was a bit over the top, there’s no doubt that the duo filled Argy Bargy with a host of soon to be classic new wave tunes, including Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart and If I Didn't Love You. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in the Netherlands about a month after the release of Argy Bargy, on March 16, 1980, 39 years ago today. While the band would find greater commercial success with their next album, East Side Story, which yielded the hit single, and MTv favorite, Tempted, Squeeze established themselves as a leader of the New Wave movement with Argy Bargy.

Peter Frampton - 1975-03-15 - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

In the early 1970's former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton released 4 solo albums, none of which garnered much critical acclaim or commercial success. No one could have been prepared, therefore, for what transpired when he released his 5th album on January 6, 1976, a 2 disc live recording. Frampton Comes Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. Framptom Comes Alive virtually took on a life of its own. The album defined Frampton for the rest of his career, casting a shadow over all his future endeavors. More significantly, the disc came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Grateful Dead - 1982-03-14 - Davis CA (SBD)

As I've mentioned before, 1982 was one of the few years between 1977 and 1995 when I didn't see the Grateful Dead in concert. Thanks to recommendations from my on line buddies AZ Jones and Wolfclan, however, I've spent a lot of time in recent months listening to tapes from that year. Recently, "Live From The Archives", one of the sites listed in my blog roll, also posted several Dead shows from 1982. They noted that "1982 found the band leaning toward a simple, more straight ahead rock approach than previous years. The entire year is full of fantastic shows and I was torn as to which one to post". Well, you can check out 1982 for yourself with this soundboard recording from March 14, 1982, 37 years ago today.

Stevie Wonder - 1975-03-13 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

Perhaps no artist's star burned brighter in the 1970s than that of Stevie Wonder. Between October 1972 and October 1979, he released 5 albums, all of which cracked the top 5 on the Billboard charts,  Two of those, Fulfillingness' First Finale in July 1974 and Songs In The Key of Life in September 1976, went all the way to number 1. While Innervisions, released in 1973, "only" reached the #4 spot on the charts, many critics and fans cite it as  perhaps his finest work. The album spawned two hit singles in Higher Ground, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Living In The City, which reached the #8 position. Innervisions won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. The album’s lasting impact is evidenced by it being ranked #23 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.  This soundboard recording captures Stevie on tour in 1975 after the releases of Innervisions and Fulfillingness' First Finale, on March 13, 1975, 44 years ago today.  In some ways, it was a miracle he was up on stage. Just 3 days after release of Innervisions, Stevie was involved in a devastating car accident in North Carolina, while traveling north after a concert the day before. The accident left him in a coma for 4 days and had fans wondering if Innervisions would be the last work from this legend. Fortunately, he recovered, though he did lose his sense of smell as a result of the injuries he suffered.

Marshall Tucker Band - 1976-03-12 - Boston, MA (HQ Aud)

One of the many genres of rock music that emerged during the 1970s was Southern Rock. While the Allman Brothers were the clear leaders in the rise of Southern Rock, other artists such as Charlie Daniels, The Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and The Marshall Tucker Band (MTB) also thrived during the 1970s.  The MTB released 8 albums in the 1970's, and all but one made the top 40 on the Billboard charts.  They released their highest charting album, Searching For A Rainbow, in August 1975. The disc went to #15, and included the single Fire On The Mountain, which climbed to #38 on the charts. Only the single Heard It In A Love Song, which went to #14 in 1977, would perform better than Fire On The Mountain. The band's concert on Match 12, 1976, 43 years ago today, featured tunes from Searching For A Raibow as well as their soon to be released disc, Long Hard Ride. On March 10, 1973, 46 years ago this very day, the Dutch Broadcasting Association VARA presented the Grand Gala du Pop (or Pop-Gala) at the Sporting Hall De Vliegermolen in Voorburg.  The rock festival featured a host of major acts including Argent, Rod Stewart & The Faces ,Rory Gallagher and Th Eagles just to name a few. The event was capped off by a performance by The Who, as captured in the TV soundboard recording. This would be the only concert the band would perform in early part of 1973, as the group was busily working on the album Quadrophenia. No songs from that disc were included in the Pop-Gala set, as they would not make their live debut until the band launched a European tour in October 1973.

When James Taylor played this set for BBC Radio on March 9, 1069, a half century ago today,  the single, Carolina in My Mind had just been released in the UK.  Yet, while Taylor finished his performance with that tune, he opened with material still in development, 4 tunes that would eventually appear on the album Sweet Baby James, which wouldn't be released until February 1970.  That disc, and the single from hit, Fire & Rain, would both go to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US and make Taylor a star.  By the way, this FM broadcast may be the earliest known live performance to have surfaced to date!

Grateful Dead - 1970-03-08 - Phoenix, AZ (SBD)

For the Grateful Dead, 1970 was a year of transition. After the psychedelic intensity of 1969's live shows, captured in the album Live Dead, the band stunned fans and critics alike when they released Workingman's Dead in June 1970, followed by American Beauty in November. These were laid back, Americana-styled albums, featuring carefully crafted tunes, tight harmonies, and folk and country rhythms. In fact, legend has it that Jerry Garcia had made an arrangement that in return for his playing pedal steel guitar on Teach Your Children, CSNY would teach the members of the Grateful Dead how to sing harmony for those albums. The 2 discs would feature what would become some of the and's best known tunes - Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's Band, Casey Jones, and Truckin, just to name a few. The band's live concerts also evolved during this period. Songs such Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven, Caution (Do Not On The Tracks) and Cryptical Envelopment which had been at the center of 1969s psychedelic jams played a less prominent role in the band's set lists. In their place, the band built jams around tunes such as Truckin, Not Fade Away and Going Down The Road. This soundboard from St Louis captures the band during this transition phase on March 8, 1970, 41 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 2003-03-07 - Atlantic City, NJ (IEM Matrix)

The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community. From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to #1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. The tour would include 120 shows in North America, Europe and Australia, and run until October 2003. This IEM Matrix recording captures Springsteen during that tour in his home state of New Jersey on March 7, 2003, 16 years ago today.
