Since Leap Year comes just once every 4 years, I don't have all that many bootlegs from February 29. One I do have is this performance from Creedence Clearwater Revival, from February 29, 1972, 44 years ago today, from Tokyo, Japan. Just a heads up that this is an audience recording, and not the usual quality I post, but I thought I’d share it for several reasons. First, it fits with our February theme of the 1970s. Second, it’s Creedence, and there simply aren’t enough CCR bootlegs in circulation. Finally, this show features Creedence as a trio, with John Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford, as Tom Fogerty had left the band about a year earlier. Creedence was near the end of the line at this point, and would officially disband later that year on October 16, 1972. Download this one, therefore, to capture the band on one of its final tours!

Just two weeks before the legendary Fillmore East concerts, (immortalized in what many believe is one of the finest live albums ever released), the Allman Brothers found themselves at Brewer’s Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Missouri. In many ways, this show was a dress rehearsal for the Fillmore run, as they would only play one more show before heading to NY, that being the next day on March 1 in Mississippi. Their 8-song set on February 28, 1971, 45 years ago today, included 2 songs, which at the time, they seldom played in concert, and are not on the Live at The Fillmore album – Midnight Rider and Revival. For that alone, it’s worth the download. Then, add in that this is a Duane bootleg, coupled with the fact that the band is on the cusp on its most historic moment, and the result is a show you have to have in your collection.

Neil Young - 1971-02-27 - London, UK (SBD or Ex Aud)

In September 1970, Neil Young relesased his 3rd allbum entitled After The Goldrush. The disc would rise tho#8 on the Billboard charts, and while initialt critical reviews were mixed, over the years, the album has become legendary. In 2003,, Rolliing Stone, ranked it at #71 o n its list of the greatest albums of all time, while 3years later, Time magazine ranked it among the 100 greatest albums ever. Just under 2 years later, in February 1972, Neil released Harvest, which rose to similar heights.  That album went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and was rsanked #78 on Rolling Stones' 2003 list.  Those 2 backto back albums, with sonsg sich as the the 2 title tracks, Heart Of Godl, The Needle And The Damage Done, Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Southerman, just to name a few, may have been the pinnacle of Young's legenary career. This soundboard (or excellnet audience) recording captures Neil in London between the rleased of those 2 albums, on February 27, 1971, 45 years ago today.

Eddie Money - 1978-02-25 - Roslyn, NY (FM)

In late 1977, Eddie Money  released his self-titled debut album, which went to #37 on the Billboard charts. The album contained what would become 2 of Eddie’s best known songs, Baby Hold On and Two Tickets To Paradise, which reached #11 and #22 respectively on the charts. From 1969 to 1971, Tom Jones hosted a weekly variety show that was taped in London and then exported for broadcast to the US on ABC.  In all 65 episodes were shot over the 3 tears. Each episode featured Tom singing several songs, some solo and some with his weekly guests.  Those guests were among rock;s biggest stars at the time, including Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield, Blood Sweat & Tears, Donovan, Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash, Smokey Robinson, and Ray Charles, just to name a few.This TV soundboard recording captures Tom on February 19, 1970, 46 years ago today, along with musical guest Joe Cocker and The Grease Band!

The Kinks - 1977-02-18 - Santa.Monica.CA (early) (SBD)

In 1976, The Kinks left RCA records to join Arista. With some encouragement from their new label, the band changed artistic direction, relinquishing the theatrics of their previous albums to return to their rock roots. They eliminated the brass section ad back up singers, returning the group to a 5 piece rock band. The new stripped down line up released its first album, Sleepwalker, on February 12, 1977. The disc, which in addition to the title track featured such soon to be Kink's classics as Jukebox Music, Life Goes On, and Life on the Road, went to #21 on the Billboard charts, the band's first commercial success in almost 7 years. The band went on tour in support of the album, including this show from Santa Monica on February 18, 1977, 39 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1971-02-18 - Port Chester NY (SBD)

For a brief 18 month period from February 1970 to July 1971, the Capitol Theatre in Portchester NY (not to be confused with the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ) was one of the premier concert venues on the East coast. Name a major rock act and they most likely played the venue. The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, Yes, Leon Russell, Grand Funk Railroad, Mountain, James Taylor, Traffic, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few, took the stage at the Capitol. (Go here for a complete list of shows). The Grateful Dead were one of the most frequent visitors to the venue, including a 6 night run in February 1971. In addition to featuring the Dead in top form, these shows are notable for several other reasons. First, Mickey Hart left the band after the first show, not to return until October 24, 1974. Second, all 6 shows were taped for the live Skull and Roses album, but not one of the recordings was used for that disc. Third, the band played numerous songs for the first time during this run, including, Bertha, Greatest Story Ever Told, Loser, Wharf Rat and Playing in The Band. Finally, the six shows were used to test Dream ESP, as audience members were asked to look at a picture being projected on a screen and told to try to send it telepathically to a doctor at the Maimonides Dream Laboratory in Brooklyn. (More on that here). This soundboard recording captures the Dead on the 1st of the 6 nights at the Capitol, on February 18, 1971, 45 years ago today. We'l bring you the rest of the shows as well over the next few days, with the exception of the February 19 show that officially released.

America - 1972-02-XX - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

Over the years here at So Many Roads, we've had numerous posts from Ultrasonic Studios in New York and The Record Plant in Sausalito. Those radio broadcasts featured some of rock's legends, often when they were just starting out, seeking to build an audience for their material. Philadelphia has a similar show featuring live broadcasts, usually over WMMR-FM, originating from Sigma Sound Studios. We can't bring you the most famous of those Sigma Sound Studios shows, the performance that helped put Billy Joel on the map, because it has been officially released. We can bring you this post, however,an FM broadcast featuring America from February 1972 (exact date unknown), some 44 years ago. The band had just released their debut album on December 29 1971, and their single, Horse With No Name, on January 31, 1972.  That song would soon climb to #1 on the Billboard charts. Jerry Garcia with Merl Saunders - 1974-02-16 - Berkeley CA (SBD)

As captured in this soundboard recording, Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders played the Keystone in Berkeley on February 16, 1974, 42 years ago today.  Nothing at all unusual about that, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, mostly on the west coast, The duo even released a live album together, entitled Live At Keystone. And the Keystone, of course, was one of Jerry's favorite venues, In fact, according to the blog Jerry Garcia’s Brokedown Palaces, he played the Keystone at least 206 times between 1971 and 1984.  So, what makes this show unusual is that it was originally scheduled for the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey!  Since John Scher, who promoted Jerry's (and the Dead's east coast tours ran the Capitol, hardly surprising that Garcia would play that venue. What no one know, however, is why the show was cancelled!  You can go here to see a copy of the ad showing the show being cancelled and find out a few more details. Van Morrison - 1973-02-15 - San Anselmo, CA (FM)

In May 1973, Van Morrison launched a 3 month tour of the US and Europe, accompanied by with his legendary backing band, the Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Music historians often label these shows as among the finest of his long storied career. Even the fickle Morrison seems to agree, having said at the time that “I am getting more into performing. It's incredible. When I played Carnegie Hall in the fall something just happened. All of a sudden I felt like 'you're back into performing' and it just happened like that...A lot of times in the past I've done gigs and it was rough to get through them. But now the combination seems to be right and it's been clicking a lot.” The concert performances were described by writer Erik Hage as "sequences of a young soul lion whipping the crowd into a frenzy and then stopping on a dime—teasing out anticipation, rushing, receding, and coaxing every drop out of his band." The tour produced the album Its Too Late To Stop Now, which critics have hailed as one of the finest live discs ever recorded. Of course, on the heels of that success, in typical Van fashion, he abruptly went in a different direction, disbanding the Caledonia Soul Orchestra just 3 months after the tour ended. Our post today, however, goes back 3 months before this historic tour, when Van played 2 warm up shows at the Lion’s Share in San Anslemo CA. This soundboard recording captures both of those performances on February 15, 1973, 43 years ago today. Download this one to hear Van the Man at his peak.

Elvis Costello - 1979-02-14 - Long Beach, CA (SBD)

In January 1979, Elvis Costello released his 3rd album, Armed Forces, although during production the working title for the disc was Emotional Fascism. The disc continued Costello’s run of commercial and critical success. Armed Forces climbed to # 10 on the Billboard charts in the US, and did even better in the UK, reaching the #2 position. Famed critic Robert Christgau gave the album a grade of A-, while Rolling Stone wrote that it’s “an album that's a killer in several senses of the word.” In 2000, Q magazine placed Armed Forces at number 45 on its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. Then, in 2003, the album was ranked number 482 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This soundboard recording captures Costello on February 14, 1979, 37 years ago today, in Long Beach, just about a month after the release of Armed Forces. Costello plays 8 songs from the new disc, including (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding?,which was only included on the US version of the album. He also breaks out I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea, a track which would not appear on an album until Taking Liberties was released in 1980. This show is Elvis at his early, angry best, an interesting counterpoint to the normal Valentine’s Day sentiment!

Peter  Frampton - 1976-02-14 - Capitol, Passaic, NJ (Early) (SBD)

When Peter Frampton played 2 shows at the 3,000 seat Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ on February 14, 1976, 4 decades ago this very day, he probably had no idea that he was on the verge of becoming one of rock's biggest star.  No one could have been prepared for what was about ti  transpire with his released 5th album, released about a month earlier. on January 6, 1976.  The 2 disc live recording. Frampton Comes Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. Framptom Comes Alive virtually took on a life of its own. The album defined Frampton for the rest of his career, casting a shadow over all his future endeavors. More significantly, the disc came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. The Clash - 1979-02-13 -  Cleveland, OH (SBD)

On November 10, 1978, The Clash released their second album, Give “Em Enough Rope, which rose to #2 on the British charts, cementing the band’s position as leaders of the punk rock movement. In the US, however, commercial reception wasn’t quite as enthusiastic, with the album only climbing to #128 on the Billboard 200 list. American critics, however, lavished the album with praise. For example, both Rolling Stone and Time Magazine named it album of the year. Robert Christgau gave the disc an A, writing that the album conveyed “truths that couldn't be stated more forcefully with any other music.” The record was loud, intense, angry, defiant and politically charged, taking on topics ranging from global terrorism to racial conflict to war to corruption in government. This soundboard recording captures The Clash a few months after the release of Give ‘Em Enough Rope in Cleveland on February 13, 1979, 37 years ago today. Chicago - 1977-02-12 - Essen, Germany (SBD)

Chicago's reputation as a rock band was sullied in the 80's and 90's as the group veered more and more into soft rock ballads.  However, in the band's prime. from 1969 to 1977, with guitarist Terry Kath at the helm, Chicago could rock with the best of them. That era ended, however, with Kath's tragic death from a self inflicted gunshot wound in January 1978.  This soundboard recording captures Chicago just about a year prior to Kath's passing, at the Rockpalast in Essen, Germany, on February 12, 1977, 39 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1970-02-11 - Fillmore East, NY (early) (SBD)

When the Allman Brothers took the stage at the Fillmore East on February 11, 1970, 46 years ago today, the band was just about 1/2 way between 2 milestones in their career. The first official Allman Brothers band concert took place on March 30, 1969 in Jacksonville, FL.  In March, 1971, the Allmans played 2 shows that were recorded for what became one of rock's most legendary live albums, entitle simply At Fillmore East. So this February performance at the venue where they would score their greatest success finds the band on the rise to stardom. They served as the lead in that night for another jam band that they would be forever linked with, San Francisco's Grateful Dead.

The Byrds - 1973-02-10 - Ithaca, NY (SBD)

As The Byrds took the stage on February 10, 1973, 43 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording, the band was in its death throes.  Right after the show, Roger McGuinn fired long time bassist Skip Battin. After 2 more shows, with Chris Hillman filling in, McGuinn dissolved the band.  But the Byrds were not yet completely dead.  Part of the reason that McGuinn dismissed his tour compatriots was that he had a reunion with the original members of The Byrds in the works. McGuinn, Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clark had reunited in October 1972 and spent a month recording an album together. With the disc set for release in March 1973, it made no sense to have 2 versions  of The Byrds in existence.  Unfortunately despite the fact that the excitement generated by the reunion of the original line propelled the disc to #20 on the Billboard charts, the album was a critical disaster.  As a result, the band called off plans for a tour and the reunion ended as quickly as it had come together.  Thus, the Byrds disbanded for a second time in last than 2 months.  When Roger McGuinn released his solo album in June 1973, The Byrds were officially gone for good.

The Ramones - 1979-02-08 - Buffalo, NY (FM)

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, more and more mainstream rock and roll fans began to discover new wave and punk bands such as The Ramones.  Of course, by the time The Ramones took the stage in Buffalo on February 8, 1979, 37 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast , the band had already been playing together for over 5 years. In 1974, The Ramones played at CBGBs, the now legendary and defunct rock club in the Bowery District in NY, 74 times! They signed their first recording contract in 1975, and released their first album in 1976. Their hard driving, straight ahead, stripped down, anti-establishment, incessant form of rock, with no song longer than 2 ½ minutes, coupled with the black leather jackets, t-shirt and jean wardrobe, combined to usher in a new era of rock music. The Ramones were the clear leaders of the punk movement on the East Coast, taking a stand against the mid 70s trends toward overblown and/or overly sentimental rock songs and albums.  Download this one, then stop back late this month for another one from this tour.
