1970s - #1: On November 30, 1972, Led Zeppelin launched a 25 date tour of the UK, which ran until January 30, 1973, their first shows in their home country in just about a year. The original 110,000 tickets, priced a £1, sold out within four hours of the box offices opening on November 10. This run of shows holds an interesting place in Led Zeppelin's history for several reasons. First, it was the last full fledged tour of the UK by the band. The only subsequent shows that they would play in England prior to John Bonham’s death in 1980 would be 5 nights at Earl’s Court in 1975 and 2 performances at Knebworth on 1979. Second, the tour would also be the last time that the band played small venues, such as the 1800 seat New Theatre in Oxford. The arena/stadium era would commence for Led Zep right after these shows. Finally, this tour was supposed to have produced the first Led Zep live album, however, the band eventually decided to use the Madison Square Garden performances later that year for the disc The Song Remains The Same. This soundboard recording from January 7, 1973, 53 years ago today, captures Led Zep on in Oxford, about ½ way through the tour.

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. Led Zep 1975 - Back to Back - #1: During the decade of the 1970s, one band towered above all others - the mighty Led Zeppelin. Their 1975 tour found the band at the peak of their powers, both in the studio and on stage. As the tour launched, Led Zep released the double album Physical Graffiti, which went to #1 on the charts in both the US and UK. The disc also received strong critical reviews. Billboard magazine gave the disc 5 stars while Rolling stone wrote that Physical Graffiti was "the band's Tommy, Beggar's Banquet and Sgt. Pepper rolled into one." On stage, after some early issues due to Page having suffered a broken finger and Plant contacting the flu, the band rounded into form, playing one memorable show after another. In fact, by the end of the run, Plant proclaimed "this has been our most successful tour on every level and I had a great time all the way through." Led Zeppelin - 1979-08-04 - Knebworth, UK (SBD)

Led Zeppelin, who had taken the rock world by storm earlier in 1969 with their ground breaking debut album, was invited to play Woodstock. The band declined, opting to play 2 shows at the convention  center in Asbury Park instead. The band's manager, Peter Grant, apparently decided that headlining their own concert was preferable, explaining "I said no because at Woodstock we'd have just been another band on the bill."  Of course, that explanation seems a bit hollow given that the band played the Texas Pop Festival on August 31, 1969, just 2 weeks after Woodstock where they were just one of over a dozen bands on the bill!

A decade after Woodtsock, Led Zeppelin found themselves on the grounds at Knebworth House, located 26 miles north of London. The site hosted itss first rock festival in 1974, when the Allman Brothers, Van Morrison and The Doobie Brothers took the stage in front of 60,000 fans (go here for more on Knebworth's history). Additional festivals were held in 1975, 1976, and 1978 with acts such as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Genesis. No Knebworth show might have been more anticipated, however, than the one in 1979, when Led Zeppelin agreed to perform. For Led Zep, it would be their first live show since the death of Robert Plant's son in 1977, and their first show in the UK in 4 years. Ticket demand for the initial August 4 performance was so great that a second show was added on August 11. Zeppelin would return to the stage in front of over 400,000 fans during those 2 days, reinforcing their place at the time as rock's biggest act. Their shows would also feature the first live performances of tunes from their soon to be released album. In Through The Out Door. Some reviews claimed the band sounded rusty -- hardly surprising after a 2 year lay off - and the band members themselves were not completely satisfied with their performance. Maybe they sensed it was the beginning of the end. Led Zep's original line up would never again perform live in their home country. In fact, within a year, John Bonham would be dead and Led Zeppelin would be no more. Led Zep 1980 - Back To Back - #1: Unlike the massive stadium tours that Led Zep had embarked on in the late 1970’s, their 1980 European run consisted of just 14 shows in smaller venues. The set list incorporated 3 songs from their 1979 album In Through The Out Door - Hot Dog, All Of My Love and In The Evening - as well as the first performance of Train Kept A-Rollin since 1969. The tour, tragically, would be Led Zep's last ride together, as John Bonham would die from alcohol abuse just about 2 months after the end of the run. Led Zep 1973 - Back To Back - #1: Led Zeppelin launched their 1973 North American on May 4, about a month after the release of the band’s 5th album, Houses of The Holy, which had gone to the top of the charts in both the US and UK. Led Zep would play outdoor stadiums for the first time on this run, including a show in Tampa on the 2nd night of the tour that drew 56,800 fans, breaking the attendance record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. The shows also incorporated more theatrics and special effects, including dry ice, lasers, backdrop mirrors, hanging mirror balls and pyrotechnics. The last 3 shows of the tour at Madison Square Garden were filmed and taped for use in compiling the band’s first concert movie and its accompanying live album soundtrack, both entitled The Song Remains The Same, which would be released in 1976. This soundboard recording captures the band early on in that tour, in Dallas on May 18, 1973, 51 years ago today. All 3 surviving members - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones - attended the ceremony. While the 3 put aside any differences for their set, with the late John Bonhan's son, Jason, on drums. during the induction speech Page and Jones took several shots at one another, resulting in some uncomfortable meoments for all in attendance.

Led Zeppelin - 1975-02-28 - Baton Rouge, LA (SBD)

When Led Zeppelin launched their North American tour on January 18, 1975, it had been almost 2 years since their last tour, the longest break from performing that the band had taken at that point in their career.  The tour had a bit of a rocky start, as guitarist Jimmy Page was suffering from a broken finger that forced him to use a three finger playing technique during many of the early shows. In addition, Robert Plant contracted a bad case of the flu early in the tour, causing the cancellation of one show and negatively affecting his singing during several others.  The band also needed to work out the kinks associated with incorporating new material from their soon to be released album, Physical Graffiti, into their set list. By February, however,  the band seemed to have overcome all those issues, playing as powerfully as they had at any point in their long storied career. This soundboard recording captures them in Baton Rouge on February 28, 1975, 49 years ago today, from Baton Rouge. When the tour ended, Plant commented that "This has been our most successful tour on every level and I had great time all the way through."

While the 1995 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Class has plenty of star power - Neil Young, The Allman Brothers, Janis Joplin, etc. - Led Zeppelin overshadowed them all. The 3 surviving members - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones - reunited, with Jason Bonham, the son of the band's late great John Bonham, on drums, to play a 5 song set.

While the 3 put aside any differences for their set, with the late John Bonhan's son, Jason, on drums. during the induction speeches, Page and Jones took several shots at one another, resulting in some uncomfortable meoments for all in attendance.

This post goes back to tbe very beginning of Led Zeppelin's legendary carrer. On January 12, 1969, the band released their self-titled debut album, and rock and roll was never the same again. Over the next 10 years, Led Zep would become one of the immortal bands in rock history, as their fusion of rock and the blues launched what would eventually become known as heavy metal. Their first album featured songs that would become staples of their live performances for years to come, including Good Times Bad Times, Dazed and Confused, Black Mountain Side, and Communication Breakdown. While at the time, the album received largely negative reviews, today, critics are almost unanimous that the album was one of the finest debut discs ever recorded. The Times in London ranked it as the 41st greatest album of all time, while Rolling Stone magazine placed it in the #29 position on its list of the top 500 best albums. The day before the album hit stores, Led Zep played a concert at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. This recording of that show, from January 11, 1969, 55 years ago today, is the earliest known Led Zep soundboard.

All were inducted into the Rock & Rol Hall of Fame in 1995.  And all were overshadowed that night by the headline inductees, the mighty Led Zeppelin.  Most artists get to play 1, maybe 2 songs at their induction. Zeppelin, with Jason Bonham on drums in place of his deceased father, played 4, supported by Aerosmith on two tracks and Neil Young on another. 1970s- #6: From December 1970 to March 1971, Led Zeppelin spent time at Basing Street Studios and later, Headley Grange, working on their 4th studio album. During these sessions, the band decided that the album would have no title! After the adverse reviews their 3rd album had received, despite going to #1 on the carts in the US and UK, Led Zep decided that their 4th album should be almost anonymous. In place of a title, each band member would pick a symbol that would appear on the record’s inner sleeve. “We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket", Jimmy Page explained. "Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing.” The record company strongly opposed the decision, but the band, using their considerable clout, held fast. Clearly the band knew what they were doing. The 4th Led Zep album – unofficially known by any and all of the following names: Led Zeppelin IV, Untitled, Zoso, and Runes - would be their biggest yet. Since its release on November 8, 1971, the disc has shipped over 23 million units in the United States alone, making it the third-best-selling album ever in the US. The album featured such classics as Black Dog, Rock & Roll, When The Levee Breaks, Going To California,and of course, the one and only, Stairway to Heaven. This soundboard plus adience recording recording captures the band on September 28, 1971, 1971, 51 years ago today, in in Osaka just before the release of Led Zep IV.

Led Zep 1975  - Back To Back - #1: During the decade of the 1970s. one band towered above all others - the mighty Led Zeppelin. Their 1975 tour found the band at the peak of their powers, both in the studio and on stage. As the tour launched, Led Zep released the double album Physical Graffiti, which went to number 1 on the charts in both the US and UK. The disc also received strong critical reviews. Billboard magazine gave the disc 5 stars while Rolling stone wrote that Physical Graffiti was "the band's Tommy, Beggar's Banquet and Sgt. Pepper rolled into one." On stage, after some early issues due to Page having suffered a broken finger and Plant contacting the flu, the band rounded into form, playing one memorable show after another. In fact, by the end of the run, Plant proclaimed "this has been our most successful tour on every level and I had a great time all the way through." This soundboard recording captures Led Zep in Fort Worth on March 3, 1975, 47 years ago today. 1970s - #4: When Led Zeppelin launched its 1975 North American concert tour in January of that year, it marked the 10th time the band had toured on that continent! It was the first time, however, they had played live in over 18 months, and the fact they were rusty was evident in some of the early shows on the tour. The band also was in the process of incorporating new material into their set list from their soon to be released Physical Graffiti album. Five songs from the album, Sick Again, In My Time of Dying, Kashmir, Trampled Under Foot and The Wanton Song, all found their way into the set list at some point during the tour, though by the end of the run only the first 4 were still being played. When the double album was finally released in February, it would go on to sell 8 million copies and hit number 1 on both the US and UK charts. Physical Graffiti's impact was so great that every previous Led Zep disc climbed back into the Billboard top 200 soon after it was released. Rolling Stone ranked the album at #70 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time while The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included the disc in its The Definitive 200: Top 200 Albums of All-Time.
