Today's post goes back to August 30, 2009, 17 years ago today, with an FM broadcast that features James Taylor at Tanglewood in conjunction with the Boston Pops Orchestra, conducted by John Williams. In past years we’ve also brought you the 2002 and 2003 shows.

U2 2009 - Back To Back - #1: On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales This IEM recording captures the band during that tour in the Netherlands on July 20, 2009, 17 yeras ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

As I've discussed on several occasions on this blog, my very first concert was Elton John at Madison Square Garden on August 15, 1976. That show was the inspiration for my book,TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: AN ORDINARY GUY'S LIFETIME OF LIVE ROCK & ROLL. Since then, I've seen him 5 more times, all at The World's Most Famous Arena, including:
  1. a performance in 1992 during his The One tour,
  2. a outstanding solo show in October 1999,
  3. a 30th anniversary tribute to the Captain Fantastic album in September 2005,
  4. his 60th birthday concert, which was also his 60th concert at MSG, in March 2007
  5. and a concert in November 2018 during his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour
Elton is one of those rare artists, like Paul McCartney, where you can attend a show, hear 30 great tunes, and still make a list of #1 hits and classics he didn't play! (case in point - the last time I saw Elton he didn't play Honky Cat, Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word,  or Captain Fantastic, just to name 3!)

This soundboard recording captures Sir Elton 17 years ago today in Ireland on June 6, 2009, one of 85 concerts he played that year.  In addition to shows with his full band, such as this one, Elton in 2009 also played Red Piano shows in Las Vegas, Face to Face concerts with Billy Joel, as well as duet performances with Ray Cooper.

2000s - #3: As the first decade of the 21st century came to a close, Elton John continued to remain a vibrant force in the music industry. In 2006, he released The Captain and The Kid, a new studio album which was the follow up to his 1975 number one album, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy.  The next year, he released Rocket Man: Definitive Hits, a 17 song compilation that included 13 number one songs. He continued to perform his Red Piano shows in Las Vegas, extending the initial 3 year run for another 3 years, as well as taking the performance to Europe.  From 2006 to 2008, Elton played over 300 concerts, including solo shows, concerts with his full band, and his Red Piano gig.  After closing 2008 with a New Year's Eve show at Wembley, he was on the road again just 2 weeks later, in South America, for the first of what would be 85 concerts in 2009.  He launched his 2009 tour in Sao Paolo, Brazil, on January 17, 2009, 9 years ago today.  This FM recording of the show captures the complete concert, all 24 tunes, unlike some bootlegs of the show which have only 17 of songs. Of note, the next to last song of the night is Skyline Pigeon, a tune from his first album which was released almost 40 years earlier!

Springsteen 2009 - Back To Back - #1: When Bruce Springsteen brought his Working On A Dream tour to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ for 4 shows in October 2009, fans felt a mixture of excitement and sadness. Of course any concert on Bruce’s home turf raised the emotional stakes, but these shows had special meaning for his audience. On the one hand, each show would feature an entire album played in its entirety, a rare and treat. On the other hand, the 5 concerts would be the last that Springsteen would play in Giants Stadium, as the building would be demolished in 2010 to make way for Met Life Stadium. Springsteen played 25 shows at Giants Stadium between 1985 and 2009, more than any other artist, including a 10 night run in July and August 2003. His October 9 show on this stand would be the last concert ever played in the venue. Springsteen wrote a new song to commemorate the venue, entitled Wrecking Ball. Wrecking Ball would open all 5 shows on this run, and would go on to become the title track for Bruce’s 2012 album release. This soundboard recording captures Bruce on October 2, 2009, 16 years ago today, on night 1 at Giants Stadium, and features Darkness of The Edge of Town, only the 2nd time the album had been played live in it entirety. Download this one now, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

The festival initially started as a two-day event, but in the early 1990s it became three days with the full inclusion of Friday, so that teh event had enough space to include local Belgian bands. As with other festival, Blues Peer expanded to include other generes of music.  This FM broadcast captures Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at the festival on July 19, 2009, 16 years ago today.

He has had number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic, selling over 100 million records. He has hosted 2 TV variety series, one in the 1970's and another in the 1980's. He has performed every style of music imaginable, including pop, rock, R&B, country, techno, soul, gospel and show tunes. He has sung the theme song to numerous movies, including What's New Pussy Cat and The Emperor's New Groove. His voice, with its trademark Welsh accent, makes every song he sings instantly identifiable. And his electrifying live performances still result in women throwing their underwear onto the stage. On top of that, he has played one of the largest festivals in the world, taking the saTage at Glastonbury on June 28, 2009, 16 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording. He is Tom Jones, and even after 60 years in the music business, he still has that magic when he takes the stage to captivate an audience.

Prior to 1993, the Super Bowl halftime show was a showcase for college marching bands, Up With People and gimmicks like Brian Boitano figure skating with Dorothy Hamill. That all changed in 1993, however, when the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, headlined half time at Super Bowl XXVII. Since then, some of the biggest names in rock have played the halftime show at the Super Bowl, including Paul McCartney, The Who, Tom Petty, U2, The Rolling Stones, and Prince, just to name a few. That roster of legends also included Bruced Springsteen, as captured in this TV soundboard recording  playing halftime at Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009, 16 years ago today.
