In July 1972, WCBS-FM in New York abandoned its rock and roll format having lost the ratings war with WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM, and became one of the first stations in the US to adopt an "oldies" format. That change proved to be ratings magic, and WCBS became one of the highest rated stations in New York for the next quarter century. WCBS celebrated 25 years as an oldies station with a concert, at Radio City Music Hall on April 26, 1997, 29 years ago today, with a concert that featured 5 performers who would all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:
- Felix Cavaliere: Inducted just a few days after this concert as a member of The Rascals, who put aside years of differences to perform People Got To Be Free. Other members of the class of 1997 included Buffalo Springfield, CSN, and Joni Mitchell.
- Ronnie Spector: Inducted in 2007 as a member of the Ronettes. Other artists inducted that year included R.E.M, Patti Smith and Van Halen.
- Little Anthony & The Imperials: Inducted in 2009, alongside Jeff Beck, Metallica, and Run DMC, just to name a few.
- Dion Dimucci: Inducted in 1989, along with the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, and The Temptations.
- Frankie Valli: Inducted in 1990 as a member of the Four Seasons, along with The Who, Bobby Darin, The Four Tops, The Kinks, The Platters, Simon & Garfunkel, and Louis Armstrong, just to name a few. For the ceremony, the original lineup of the Four Seasons reunited for the first time since the mid-1960s and sang together for what would be the last time.
The whole show, of course, was broadcast live on WCBS-FM! By the way, with the exception of a 2 years stint from 2005 to 2007 where the station featured the ill fated JACK-FM concept, the station has stayed true to its oldies format (though the songs now are more 1970s,1980s and 1990s than 1950s and 1960s) and continues to be one of the most listened to stations in the New York area.
