This FM broadcast captures Sheryl in New York on October 12, 1998, 28 years ago today. She was doing a promotional appearance for her 3rd album, The Globe Sessions, which had been released in September 1998. I've only seen Sheryl Crow once, on July 28, 2019 at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport in New York. The good news - our Chase Card got us early admission so we found a spot right in front of Sheryl's microphone (it was standing room only!), not more than 5 feet from her! The bad news - its the last concert I attended before the pandemic hit and kept us away from live music for over 2 years. That's what led to finally writing my book - since I couldn't attend live shows, figured I might as well write about them.

This webcast recording captures Sheryl about a year before I saw her in concert, at the Lockin' Festival on August 26, 2018, 8 years ago today.

Sheryl 1999 - Back To Back - #1: The summer of 1999 was a busy time for Sheryl Crow, to say the least. She was on the road as part of the Lilith Fair, an all female tour organized by Sarah McLachlan, which also featured such artists as The Pretenders, Indigo Girls, Liz Phair, Suzanne Vega, and Dixie Chicks, just to name a few.  She was also promoting her 1998 critically acclaimed album, The Globe Sessions, which went to #5 on the Billboard charts and won 2 Grammy Awards. Sheryl used a night off from the Lilith Fair to record an episode of Sessions At West 54th Street on July 29, 1999, 27 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording. Sheryl used the episode to feature both her album and the tour, playing a set very similar to what she was doing on satge at the Lilith Fair.  Downalod this one, them come back tomorrow for part 2 of thsi Back To Back set.

In my book, Ten Rules Of The Road I Learned At My First Concert, Rule #5 is "Rock Concerts Are Rarely Played At Venues Meant For Music". Afterall, venues such as Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium, and MetLife Stadium were built for sports first, concerts second.  In addition, I've seen shows in such unlikely places as a parking lot, the side of a hill, and an ice skating rink, just to add further proof. That said, I've never seen a concert on an aiplane, whch is exactly where Sheryl Crow performed on May 4, 2004, 22 years ago today, as captured in this FM Broadcast. Sheryl played a 45 minute acoustic show from Row 31 of a chartered United Airlines 777 making a trip from Chicago to Los Angeles. Billed as the first concert played at an altitude of 35,000, Sheryl's performance celebrated the launch of Sony's first foray into the online music market, the Sony Connect store, while marking a unique partnership with United Airlines. The mood on board was celebratory from the captain's opening welcome, that "today we fly as the Crow flies," to Crow’s performance as the plane glided over the Grand Canyon. Crow clearly was enjoying herself, at one point jokingly telling the invited guests "So, I can’t lie to you. It's been a really long time since I've been in the coach section." And, as she got ready to perform her last number, telling the other passengers" "When I'm done with this song, I'm going to put on a parachute and jump out!".

1990s - #3: When your debut album goes to #3 on the Billboard charts, and wins 3 Grammys, as Tuesday Night Music Club did, you've established quite a standard for future releases. For Sheryl Crow, however, that hardly seemed to be an issue. In 1996, her self-titled second disc went to # 6 on the charts, earned her 2 more Grammys, and included such hits as Everyday Is A Winding Road, If It Makes You Happy and Hard To Make A Stand. The album also received significant critical acclaim. For example, the Village Voice ranked it at #26 in its list of the best albums of 1996. Rolling Stone selected it as one of the essential albums of the 1990s while also naming it the 44th greatest album of all time by a female artist. This soundboard recording captures Sheryl in Chicago on March 12,1997, 29 years ago today, on tour in support of her 2nd album.
