1990s - #5: This Bruce Springsteen post is a bit unique because it began as a Bon Jovi benefit show, but transformed into a Springsteen tour de force. The "Come Together: Jon Bon Jovi & Friends" benefit concert was organized by the Long Branch Police Department, The Asbury Park Press, and FPI Concerts, along with Jon Bon Jovi. The concert, held January 31, 1998, 19 years ago today, in Red Bank NJ, was held to honor slain Long Branch police officer Sgt. Patrick King and raise money for the Sgt. Patrick King Memorial Fund to provide for his family. King, a 45-year-old father of two young boys, was fatally shot on November 20, 1997 by a fugitive who had vowed to kill himself and a police officer rather than be captured and returned to jail. Some 20 musicians with ties to the Jersey shore music scene answered Jon Bon Jovi's call, including Bruce Springsteen, Patti Scialfa Clarence Clemons, Danni Frederici, Little Steven, Max Weinberg, Southside Johnny, Bobby Bandiera, and Richie Sambora, just to name a few. Actor Danny DeVito was the event's MC. Amidst all that star power, Bruce shone brightest, spending the entire show on stage. The concert was Bruce’s first full-length electric gig following his acoustic The Ghost Of Tom Joad solo tour. Moreover, it put him back together with members of the E Street Band, foreshadowing their reunion tour which would finally occur in 1999. Dire Straits - 1978-01-30 - Leeds, England (SBD)

1970s - #5: When Dire Straits released their self titled debut album in February 1978, the music industry barely paid attention. Fortunately for the band, Karin Berg, working at Warner Brothers in New York did. With her backing, the band was booked to tour as the opening act for the Talking Heads. The success of that tour led to a US recording contract with Warner, followed by the release of their debut album worldwide. The disc would reach the top 10 in every country in Europe, while climbing to number 2 on the US charts. In early 1979, they launched their first headlining tour, playing 51 sold-out concerts over a 38-day period. Sultans of Swing, the single from their album which was released during that tour, scaled the charts to reach number four in the United States and number eight in the United Kingdom. This soundboard recording captures Dire Straits right before the release of their debut disc, in Leeds on January 30, 1978, 39 years ago today. 

February's Theme At So Many Roads

For February, our theme will be The 1980s.  Every show we post will have taken place during the decade which saw:

• Several of the classic bands from the 1960s and 1970s disband or take significant time off, some permanently, such as Led Zeppelin due to the death of John Bonham, and others temporarily, such as The Who, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.
• The rise of new wave and punk acts to positions of prominence, though some like The Clash, would burn out, others such as Elvis Costello would radically change their sound, and still others, such as U2, would find themselves on top of the rock world.
• Rock again would become associated with social causes, as evidenced by Live Aid, Farm Aid, The Amnesty Concerts, and The Bridge School Benefits. 
• The rise of MTV, a medium which originally served as a vehicle for new acts, but which by decade's end would help artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Eric Clapton, Fleetwood Mac and even the Grateful Dead find a vast nationwide audience.

Steely Dan - 2000-01-28 - New York, NY (SBD)

2000s - #5: On February 29, 2000, a rare date that comes around just every 4 years, Steely Dan did something even rarer, as they released their first studio album in 2 decades, since Gaucho in 1980. That disc, entitled Two Against Nature (clearly a reference to Fagan and Becker's tendency to not follow the norm)not only went to number 6 on the Billboard charts, but also garnered 4 Grammy Awards, including Album of The Year. The Album of the Year victory was major surprise as they defeated Eminen and his highly controversial album The Marshall Mathers LP. In anticipation of the album release and tour, about a month earlier, Steely Dan recorded a live show for PBS on January 28. 2000, 17 years ago today, which was to be aired in on March 1.  This soundboard recording captures that PBS special in its entirety, which features numerous tunes from Two Against Nature as well as a host of Steely Dan classics.

Rolling Stones - 1999-01-27 - Sacramento, CA (SBD) 

1990s - #4: On September 29, 1997, the Rolling Stones released Bridges to Babylon, their last studio album of the 20th century. While the album met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long world wide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. Along the way, the Stones visited 25 countries on 4 continents. The band followed that up in 1999 with the No Security tour, in support of the album of the same name, a live disc featuring songs from the Bridges to Babylon run. The No Security tour launched on January 26, 1999 and would feature 43 shows, all is arenas seating 20,000 or less, This soundboard recording captures the Stones on night 2 of the tour, in Sacramento, on January 27, 1999, 18 years ago today.

1970s - #4: ABC's In Concert television series premiered on November 24, 1972, featuring a concert with Alice Cooper, Bo Diddley and Seals & Crofts from Hofstra University. The second episode, broadcast on December 8, 1972 featured The Allman Brothers Band and Chuck Berry. The show would become a regular Friday night feature and stay on the air until 1975. By the way, the Original executive producer of In Concert, Don Kirschner left in 1973 to start his own rival show, Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, which debuted in September 1973.  This TV Soundboard recording captures the Guess Who on In Concert, live from The world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, on January 26, 1973, 44 years ago today.

Gin Blossoms - 2003-01-24 - Agoura Hills, CA (SBD)

2000s - #4: In the early 1990s, the Gin Blossoms had a string of chart successes with songs such as Hey Jealousy, Found Out About You, Allison Road and Follow You Down, Some of that success was overshadowed, however, by the suicide of band founder, Doug Hopkins, who had been dismissed from the group right before they made it big due to his issues with alcohol. The Gin Blossoms broke up in early 1997, but 4 years later decided to regroup. Just as that reunion was about to take flight, the band dismissed Phil Rhodes, due to issues with alcohol, an eerie parallel to what had happened with Hopkins. This soundboard recording captures the Gin Blossoms during that reunion tour in Agoura Hills on January 24, 2003, 14 years ago today.

Robert Plant & Jimmy Page - 1996-01-23 - Vina, Chile (FM)

1990s - #3: After Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page each pursued other musical interests. In 1994, however, all that changed MTc approached Robert Plant to do an episode of the then wildly popular Unplugged series. Plant, not wanting to carry the banner of Led Zep's legacy alone, asked Page to join him. The passage of time seemed to heal any wounds from the past, and the duo again felt the musical connection that had made them rock legends. They taped the episode on August 25 and 26, pairing Led Zep classics with 4 new tunes. The show aired on October 12 to such an enthusiastic response that they not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded but also agreed to tour in 1995. The tour lasted over a year, finishing up in early 1996 with a series of shows in Asia and Australia.  This soundboard recording captures the duo near the end of that historic tour in Chile, on January 23, 1996, 21 years ago today.

2010s - #4: One of the hallmarks of James Taylor's long and storied career is his commitment to using his music to support social causes.  From his earliest days in the 1970s playng concerts for Greenpeace and Nuclear Disarmament, Taylor has been at the forefront of rock musicians who fight for social change. He has been actively involved in causes such as Why Hunger, MusicCares and The Rainforest Foundation, just to name three.  He was named Musicares Person Of The Year in 2005 for his work with on both children's health and environment issues. He was an active supported of President Obama's Affordable Health Care Act, as wellas the push for equal pay for women.  This soundboard recording from January 22, 2010, 7 years ago today, captures yet another in a long line of benefit concerts played by Taylor, a show designed to raise money for Boston-based Partners In Health, a nonprofit medical organization whose doctors and nurses provided emergency treatment to earthquake survivors in Haiti.

As on past tours, each concert consisted on solo segments by Elton and Billy sandwiched by duets to open and close the show. This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures the 2 legends on January 18, 2001, 16 years ago today, in Vancouver on the 4th night of the tour. In addition to the duets, highlights of the show include Elton doing a cover of Joel’s Uptown Girl and Billy playing a version of Elton’s Take Me To The Pilot.

The Byrds - 1973-01-21 - Kansas City, MO (FM)

1970s - #3: As The Byrds took the stage on January 21,1973, 44 years ago today, as captured in this FM Broadcast, recording, the band was in its death throes. A few weeks later, after a concert in Ithaca, NY, Roger McGuinn fired long time bassist Skip Battin. After 2 more shows, with Chris Hillman filling in, McGuinn dissolved the band. But the Byrds were not yet completely dead. Part of the reason that McGuinn dismissed his tour compatriots was that he had a reunion with the original members of The Byrds in the works. McGuinn, Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, and Michael Clark had reunited in October 1972 and spent a month recording an album together. With the disc set for release in March 1973, it made no sense to have 2 versions of The Byrds in existence. Unfortunately despite the fact that the excitement generated by the reunion of the original line up propelled the disc to #20 on the Billboard charts, the album was a critical disaster. As a result, the band called off plans for a tour and the reunion ended as quickly as it had come together. Thus, the Byrds disbanded for a second time in last than 2 months. When Roger McGuinn released his solo album in June 1973, The Byrds were officially gone for good.  Note - this show has been attributed to various dates from 1969 to 1973, but my research tends to point to Janaury 21, 1973 as the correct date.

Marshall Tucker Band - 1979-01-19 - Albuquerque, NM (SBD)

1970s - #2: The late 1970s and early 1980s were a difficult time for Southern Rock. The genre began to fall out of favor with the rise of punk and new wave music. Lynyrd Skynyrd fell victim to a tragic plane crash in 1977, which killed band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines. The Allman Brothers dissolved, reformed and then dissolved again. Capricorn Records, which was the home to the Allmans and a host of other southern rock artists, including the Marshall Tucker Band,, collapsed in 1979 due to financial issues. The MTB would suffer its own tragedy just 4 months into the decade of the 80s, when bassist Tommy Caldwell died in an auto accident. Lead guitarist Toy Caldwell would leave the band 4 years later. Southern Rock, which has risen to prominence in the middle of the 1970s, would never again be the same. When the Marshall Tucker Band took the stage on January 19, 1979, 38 years ago today, however, they probably could not have imagined the difficult times to come. Or maybe they had an inkling, as their last song of the night was Searching For Rainbow, implying looking for better times in the future.  Download this soundboard recording and decide for yourself.

In 2013, they released their 2nd studio album, Made Up Mind, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard album charts.  This excellent audience recording captures the band on tour in support of Mad Up Min in Boca raton on January 18, 20015, 2 years ago today.

2010's - #2: This soundboard matrix recording captures David Crosby just 3 short years ago today, on January 16, 2014.  Crosby opened the show by playing 10 of the 11 tracks from his soon to be released album, Croz,  his first studio album in 21 years. The disc, which hit stores on January 28, climbed all the way to #36 on the Billboard charts. Of course, in addition to the new material, Crosby’s set list featured the classics, as he reached back to his days with The Byrds and CSN for such tunes as Eight Miles High, Guinnevere, Long Time Gone and Déjà Vu.

1980s - #5: After a highly successful tour in 1985, including a triumphant appearance at Live Aid, Eric Clapton took most of 1986 off. The few shows he did play, however, featured a brand new band. Whereas in 1985, 6 or 7 band members backed EC, the 1986 group featured only 3 other musicians - Nathan East on bass, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards and Phil Collins on Drums. Collins also served as the producer for Clapton’s latest album August, which he released on November 24, 1986. When EC went on tour in support of August in 1987, he stuck with the 4 piece line up from his 1986 shows, and the results were incredible. This soundboard recording captures EC early on in that 1987 tour,  in Rotterdam on January 16, 1987, 3 decades ago this very day.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1984-01-13 - Seattle, WA (SBD)

1980s - #4: The mid 1980s were a tough period for Jerry Garcia. Garcia became more and more dependent on heroin, neglecting his personal health in the process. He grew overweight, exacerbating his issues in the process. In late 1984, the rest of the Grateful Dead staged an intervention, demanding Jerry check into rehab. That seem to work for a while, as the Dead's Spring 1985 tour featured some stellar playing and creative set lists. By the end of that year, however, Jerry had lapsed back into heroin dependency. In the middle of 1986, the drugs, weight and other health issues all came home to roost, as Jerry lapsed into a diabetic coma after a concert in Washington DC. Fortunately he made a miraculous recovery and we were blessed with 8 more years of music before his untimely passing in 1995. This soundboard recording from January 13, 1984, 33 years ago today. captures Jerry just before the start of that dark 2 year stretch. Incredibly, for a man about to fall into the oblivion of drug abuse, his live playing shows few, if an, signs of the trouble ahead.

Sting - 2001-01-12 - Rio De Janiero, Brazil (SBD) 

2000s - #1: In late 1999, Sting released his 6th album, giving him one more solo disc than he had studio albums with the Police. That album, Brand New Day, hit the top 10 in both the US and UK, and went triple platinum. The album featured numerous guest artists, including James Taylor, Branford Marsalis, and Stevie Wonder, as well as a host of string players conducted by Dave Hartley. In 2000, Sting won 2 Grammy awards for Brand New Day. He also toured extensively in support of the album, launching a world tour on October 14, 1999 that continued until July 29, 2001. This soundboard recording captures Sting on the first night of the South American leg of the tour, in Rio De Janiero on January 12, 2001, 16 years ago today. The concert was also the opening night of the 3rd Rock In Rio Festival, a 7 day extravaganza that included performances by R.E.M., Guns N' Roses, 'N Sync, Iron Maiden, Neil Young and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Police - 1980-01-11 - Hamburg, Germany (FM)

1980s - #3: In early 1980, The Police were riding a wave of success both in the UK and the US. Their 2nd album, Regatta de Blanc, reached number 1 in the UK, as did the singles Message In A Bottle and Walking On The Moon. In the US, the title track won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental. Despite those accomplishments, the band was still at the stage where they were playing small clubs in the US, not major arenas. That success helped propel The Police to an appearance on Rockpalast, the famed German television program that featured the best and hottest bands in rock. This FM broadcast captures that Rockpalast show from  on January 11, 1980, 37 years ago today,  The set list features songs from their first 2 albums, played with the energy and ferocity of a young band starting on its journey to stardom.

1990s - #1: In May 1996, The Wallflowers released their 2nd album, Bringing Down the Horse. While sales started slowly, interest picked up when the single 6th Avenue Heartache began receiving extensive airplay on FM radio. The video for the tune also went into heavy rotation on MTV and VH1. The disc eventually reached #4 on the Billboard charts and certified 4 times platinum. In January 1977, the band received 2 Grammy nominations for 6th Avenue Heartache. This FM broadcast captures them right around the time of those nominations, in Sausalito, CA on January 10, 1997, 2 decades ago this very day.

Stephen Stills - 1977-01-09 - The Palladium, NY (FM)

1970s - #1: At the time of this show, from the Palladium on January 9, 1977, 4 decades ago this very day years ago today, Stephen Stills was on the outs with all 3 of his long time partners -  Neil Young, David Crosby and Graham Nash. Neil had left him without warning in the middle of the Stills-Young Band tour in 1976. Crosby and Nash were angry with him (and Neil) for wiping their vocals from early recordings of the Long May You Run album, after the pair had to leave the recording session to fulfill other contractual obligations. Eventually, all was forgiven and CSN reunited later in 1977 and have been together ever since, while Neil rejoined the trio many years later, in 2000, for a series of tours to launch the new century.  By the way, we told you that sometimes our posts from the same city or venue would have something in common, while others would be as different as you could imagine.  Well, I think our 2 posts from the Palladium fit the alter category, given they featured The Runaways and Stephen Stills!

The Band – 1985-01-06 – Lone Star Café, NY (early) (HQ Audience)

1980s - #2: Despite the fanfare surrounding the Last Waltz, including a full length film and a triple disc album, that November 25, 1976 show was not the last time The Band would play live. While Robbie Robertson moved on to a solo career, the other members of the group would work together in various configurations throughout the 1980s and 1990’s. The Lone Star Café in New York, famous for the giant, 40 ft high, iguana sculpture that adorned the building, became a home away from home for the re-formed group. The Band played the club on numerous occasions in the late 1980’s, often playing 3 or 4 nights in a row, with 2 shows each night. This HQ audience tape captures Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Garth Hudson, 3/5 of the original line up, at the Lone Star on January 6, 1985, 32 years ago today. A quick note – this is the early show from that night. A soundboard from the late show on January 6 has been circulating for years, but this early show tape hasn’t received as much airplay. I thought it would be fun to post something a little bit more rare.

Lone Justice - 1987-01-03 - Amsterdam,  Netherlands (FM)

1980s - #1: As long time readers of this blog know Lone Justice is one of my guilty pleasures - I could listen to the the tunes Shelter or Ways To Be Wicked non stop! Today we capture Lone Justice in Amsterdam on January 3, 1987, 3 decades ago this very day, on tour in support of the album Shelter. .The disc featured the 2 tunes I just mentioned and was co-produced by Jimmy Iovine and Steve Van Zandt. Yet even those two rock heavy weights and an infectious title track, couldn’t help the band achieve the breakthrough commercial success they sought, The album stalled at #65 on the Billboard charts, while the single made it only to #47. A shame that the public didn’t take to this vastly under rated band.

Phil Lesh - 2014-01-01 - San Rafael, CA (FM)

2010s - #1: Since Jerry Garcia's death in 1995 and the end of the original Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh has been among the most active of the former band members. Phil seems to always be out on tour, whether playing in one of the many Grateful Dead reunion runs (The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur) or fronting his ever rotating cast of new band mates know as Phil & Friends. By the way, over the years, those friends have included such rock heavy weights as Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, John Molo, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, Joan Osborne, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi, just to name a few. Phil so enjoyed playing live that he decided to open his own concert venue and restaurant in Marin County, just north of San Francisco and use that as home base for live shows, charity events and community outreach. Terrapin Crossroads opened in early 2012, with Phil christening the concert hall, know as the Grate Room, with 12 shows from March 12 to April 1, 2012. This webcast recording captures Phil & Friends as they kick off 2014 with a concert at Terrapin Crossroads, on January 1, 2014, 3 years ago today.
