2000s - #6: In 2002, Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes announced that the band was going on hiatus.  He was planning to puruse a solo career while brother Rich also has individual projects in the works. In truth, tensions between the brothers, constant line up changes in recent years, and the lack of sales sucecss of thgeir most recent album, all contributed top thge band's temporary break up.  Three years later, they reformed and went out on the road.  This soundboard recording captures them on that reunion tour, in Asheville on April 30, 2005, 2 decades ago today.

2000s - #5:  In 2006, Van Morrison released the album, Pay the Devil, his the thirty-second studio disc. The album featured twelve cover versions of American country and western tunes and three original compositions. The disc debuted at #26 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and peaked at #7 on Top Country Albums chart. This excellent audience recording captures Van the Man on tour in support of Pay The Devil in New York, on April 29, 2007, 18 years ago today.

1960s - #6: Last year, we brought you the Bufalo Springfield portion of this concert.  This year, thanks to an assist from the blog, Albums That Should Exist, we have an FM Broadcast of tne entire show from April 29, 1967, 4 dozen years ago today, at the Hollywood Bowl, including the sets from the %th Dimension, Brenda Holloway, The Seeds, Johnny Rivers and The Supremes. Please not - the sound quality isn;t perfect - some tracks have a bit of a squeal to them.  That said, the historice nature of this show made it a must to post.

2000s - #4: While the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11. This ALD Audience matrix recording captures the band on tour in support of All That You Can't Leave Behind in Phoenix on April 28, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today.

John Mellencamp - 1992-04-27 - LosAngeles, CA (SBD)

1990s - #6: While MTv Unplugged had aired since 1989, it became “the show to do” in 1991 thanks to Paul McCartney’s appearance, which was later released as an album. Show producer Alex Coletti went on to say that had McCartney not released the disc, the concept would have never gained the cult status that it went on to enjoy. The show received another boost in 1992, when Eric Clapton’s taped his January 16 performance for the Unplugged album, featuring an acoustic reworking of Layla. The disc sold 10 million copies and earned 6 Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Rock Male Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song.  Later in 1992, John Encampment added his name to the list of rock stars appearing on Unplugged, as captured in this soundboard recording from April 27, 1992, 27 years ago today.

2010s - #6: Since end of the Grateful Dead with the passing of Jerry Garcia in 1995, Bob Weir has continued to spend a huge portion of his life on the road.  From shows with Ratdog with s long time bass player Rob Wasserman, to post Dead spin offs such as The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur and Dead & Company, to unique pairings with the National and the Wolf Bros, Weir may be playing live now more than ever before in his long storied career. In 2012, he did a solo acoustic tour, which he desribed to Rolling Stone magazine as "a lot of fun for me, because I get to be alone with the song. And I get to hear every little nuance; if my instrument does something that I wasn’t expecting, I get to chase that. Chase that down a little bit. It’s simple enough so that I can hear everything that I’m singing and playing, and I’m hearing stuff that I wouldn’t, in an ensemble, be able to hear. And I’m working with that stuff so that the songs are showing me new sides of themselves."  This soundboard recording captures Weir during that tour, in Charlottesville on April 26, 2012, 13 years ago today

Neil Young & Stephen Stills - 2015-04-25 - Hollywood, CA (Ex Aud)

2010s - #5: The on again, off again musical relationship between Neil Young and Stephen Stills seems to be almost as old as rock and roll itself.  The two were in Buffalo Springfield together, though disputes between them saw Neil walking away from the band on several occaisions (for example, he missed their appearance at Monterrey Pop), before the band finally broke up in 1968. Neil rejoined Stephen as part of CSNY in 1969, but that lasted only until mid 1970.  CSNY regrouped in 1974 for a massive tour, only to split up once again by year's end.  Then Stills and Young joined up for a tour in 1976 but Neil quit after just 19 shows, sending a note that read “Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach, Neil."  Over the next quarter century, the two mostly stayed apart, except for an occaisional charity gig such as Live Aid where CSNY reunited, or studio appearance, as when Young helped CSN record the album American Dream.  Then in 2000, CSNY got back together for a full tour, which was followed by tours in 2002 and 2006. In 2010, the 2, along with Richie Furay, reformed Buffalo Springfield for two Bridge School Benefit shows. Despite rumors of a national tour, the Springfield played just a half a dozen shows in June 2011 before calling it quits.  After that Stills andf Young again went their separate ways. They reunited for a good cause in April 25, 2015, a decade ago today as captured in this excellent audience recording, playing a set at the  Light Up The Blues Benefit: Autism Speaks benefit. Will they ever play together again? Given their track record, who the heck really knows?

1960s - #5: In March of 1967, Cream made their first US appearance, playing 9 shows at the RKO Theater in NY as part of radio DJ Murray the K’s "Music in the 5th Dimension" concert series. They then went into the studio in NY to record their second album, Disraeli Gears, which, when released in November, would hit #4 on the US Billboard charts. Disraeli Gears featured Cream classics such as Sunshine Of Your Love, Strange Brew, SWLABR and Tales of Brave Ulysses. This soundboard recording finds them back home in London after that recording session, playing the Ricky Tick Club on April 22, 1967, 58 years ago today.  The band provides a preview of  Disraeli Gears, playing Sunshine of Your Love to open the show.

Grateful Dead - 1978-04-21 - Lexington, KY (SBD)

1970s - #6: As we've discussed in numerous posts on this blog, 1978 was a year of highs and lows for the Grateful Dead. Some moments the band channeled the magic of 1977, while at others they clearly sounded like a group that needed to shake things up, which they finally did in February 1979 when Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux departed. That said, the spring tour that year was obviously a high point, as shows from April 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 14, 15, 16, 22, and 24, and May 10, 11 and 14 have all been officially released (I was at May 10 & 11, my 2nd and 3rd Dead shows - my first, Englistown on September 3, 1977 was also offically released - quite a start to my long strange trip!).  This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that excellnt Spring 1978 run, in Lexington on April  21, 1978, 47 years ago today. By the way, this was just the 2nd time that the band played Werewolves of London!

Comprised of two legs and 60 concerts, the Experience + Innocence Tour visited North America from May through July, and Europe from August through November. Germany. The tour was a companion to the 2015 Innocence + Experience Tour which had supported the album, Songs of Innocence. This  IEM matrix recording captures the band during rehearsals for that tour in Canada on April 20, 2018, 7 years ago today.

Bob Marley - 1980-04-19 - Salisbury, Zimbabwe (SBD)

1980s - #6: In 1980, Bob Marley was slowly dying of cancer which had begun in his toe. Diagnosed with the disease in 1977, Marley had refused to amputate the toe due to his religious beliefs. As the cancer spread throughout his body, Marley recorded the album Uprising, a deeply religious disc addressing his Rastafarian faith. The final track in the album is Redemption Song, in which Marley deals with his own mortality. Marley would go on tour in support of the album, playing his final live performance on September 23, 1980 in Pittsburgh. This soundboard recording captures him earlier in that tour, playing a free concert in Zimbabwe, in celebration of Zimbabwe's declaration of self-government and independence from the UK, on April 19, 1980, 45 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1969-04-18 - West Lafayette, IN (SBD)

1960s - #4: For the Grateful Dead, the year 1969 saw them take the live performances deep into space, displaying a level of pyschedelic improvisation that had never been seen before, and has rarely been matched since. In reviewing the album Live Dead, which was band released in November 1969 and featured their performances at the Fillmore West in late February/early March 1969, famed critic Robert Christgau wrote that side two of the album "contains the finest rock improvisation ever recorded."  This soundboard recording captures the Dead just over a month after the concerts that spawned the Live Dead album (and later a 9 cd box set!), in West Lafayette on April 18, 1969, 56 years ago today.

Rolling Stones - 1965-04 18 - Paris, France (SBD)

1960s - #3: In April 1965, the Rolling Stones played 3 shows in Paris as a warm up for the first North American tour, which would launch less than a week later. This soundboard recording captures the last of the 3 nights, on April 18, 1965, 60 years ago this very day. While touring the US and Canada was a huge step for the band, it was not the only major event that would transpire in the Spring of 1965.  They would release the  tune Satisfaction, in May which would become their first number #1 single in the US.  The Stones would follow that with Get Off Of My Cloud, which also hit in top spot in September. The band was now relying less on covers of R&B tunes and more on the song writing of Jagger and Richards. In fact, their next album, Aftermath, recorded in December 1965, would be their first that featured only compositions by the Glimmer Twins.

Gregg Allman - 1987-04-17 - New London, CT (FM)

1980s - #5: In 1982, the Allman Brothers broke up, unable to operate as a band anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Betts explained that "we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Gregg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music. He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose." In 1987, somehow, Allman again found that purpose, recording a solo album for Epic Records appropriately entitled I'm No Angel. The title track became a top 40 hit, and Allman went on tour in support of the disc. This FM broadcast captures him during that tour, in New London on April 17, 1987, 38 years ago today. By the way, the success of that album brought new attention to the Allman Brothers, which was further reinforced 2 years later by the release of the box set Dreams, celebrating the band's 20th anniversary. As the 1980s closed, the Allman Brothers would reform, and stay together for another 30 plus years!

This FM broadcast captures Elvis and The Impostors in London a set to promote new album, on April 28, 2002, 23 years ago today.

1980s - #4: Live Aid on July 13, 1985 was a coming out party for U2. Their performance that day established them as a pre-eminent live group for the first time — something for which they would eventually become superstars. The band played a 14-minute rendition of "Bad", during which Bono jumped off the stage to join the crowd and dance with a girl. Twenty years later, in July 2005, the girl that he danced with revealed that he actually saved her life at the time. She was being crushed as the crowd pushed forwards. Bono saw her plight, and gestured at the ushers to help her. They didn't understand what he was saying, so he jumped down to help her himself. Bono, Edge and U2 have remained in the spotlight ever since that transcendent Live Aid performance. This FM broadcast from April 15, 1985, 4 decades ago today catches the band just 3 months before that legendary Live Aid performance.\

The Bangles - 2003-04-14 - Amsterdam, Netherlands (FM)

2000s - #2:  Products of the Los Angeles music scene, The Bangles were the perfect band to capitalize on the rise of the MTv generation and the resurgence of pop music in the late 1980s. While the 1986 album Different Light, which included Manic Monday and Walk Like An Egyptian, gets most of the attention from fans and critics alike, I prefer their first disc, All Over The Place. That one includes Hero Takes A Fall and Going Down To Liverpool, my 2 favorite Bangle tunes. The band broke up in 1998, but after a decade separation, reformed in 1998. After touring in 2000, they spent 2001 and 2002 in the studio recording Doll Revolution, their first album of new material in 15 years. This FM broadcast captures The Bangles in the Netherlands on April 14, 2003, 22 years ago today, on tour in support of that disc.

Paul McCartney - 1993-04-14 - Las Vegas, NV (Sndchk) (SBD)

1990s - #4: On February 18 1993, Paul McCartney launched his New World Tour, which stretched until December and saw Sir Paul, wife Linda, Paul "Wix" Wickens, Blair Cunningham, Robbie McIntosh, and Hamish Stuart visit North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. McCartney was touring in support of his latest album, Off The Ground, so the set list featured 6 songs from the disc - Hope of Deliverance, Peace In The Neighborhood, C'mon People, Biker Like An Icon, Looking For Changes and the title track. The new tunes, however, were not the reason thousands of people flocked to these concerts. No, most folks, like my wife and I , who saw Sir Paul during this tour on June 11, 1993 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, went to hear the "cute Beatle" reach into his illustrious past. We were not disappointed. From the opening Drive My Car to the closing Hey Jude, over half the set list was dedicated to Beatle tunes. Throw in a few Wings classics such as Band On The Run, Live And Let Die, My Love and the rarely played Another Day, and tit was a night to remember. We didn't have the best seats -- not sure if there is any such thing as a good seat in a 60,000 seat stadium - but it hardly nattered. We knew every note and sang every word, knowing this was as close to the Beatles as we would ever get. And who knew at the time that it would be another 9 years before Paul would again tour. This soundboard recording captures the soundcheck from the La Vegas stop on the tour on April 14, 1993, 32 years ago today.
