1970s - #6: In 1976, the Grateful Dead made their triumphant return to live performing after a hiatus that lasted from October 1974, after their 5 farewell shows at Winterland, to June 1976. Their return to the stage found the band playing with a renewed energy, and 1976 would set the stage for the following year, one of the most legendary in the band's 30 year long strange trip.  Th 1976 shows found the band experimenting with unique set lists,, and this soundboard recording from Columbus on September 30, 1976, 45 years ago today, is a great example.  The Dead open with the Music Never Stops, a tune usually found closing the first set.  They bring Set 1 to an end with Scarlet Begonias, a traditional second set tune.  The Lazy Lightning > Supplication pairing, often found in set 1, actually opens set 2 in this show.  And Morning Dew as an encore is an inspired and unusual choice!  By the way, the jam in the middle of set 2, that starts and ends with St. Stephen, is a taste of what was to come in 1977!

1990s-#6: After Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page each pursued other musical interests. In 1994, however, all that changed MTv approached Robert Plant to do an episode of the then wildly popular Unplugged series. Plant, not wanting to carry the banner of Led Zep's legacy alone, asked Page to join him. The passage of time seemed to heal any old wounds, and the duo again felt the musical connection that had made them rock legends. They taped the episode on August 25 and 26, pairing Led Zep classics with 4 new tunes. The show aired on October 12 to an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. This soundboard captures Plant and Page during that tour on September 29, 1995, 26 years ago today.in Albuquerque. Note - the artwork shows incorrect date of September 9.

1990s - #5: In late 1989, Eric Clapton released Journeyman, his 11th solo album and first disc of new material since August in 1986. The album was also Eric’s first since kicking his addiction to alcohol. The disc rose to number 16 on the billboard album charts, and produced 2 singles, Pretending and Bad Love, which made Billboard’s Top 100 and also climbed to #1 on their mainstream rock chart. Bad Love also garnered Clapton a Grammy for best male Rock Vocal Performance. Journeyman also included such notable tracks as Running On Faith, No Alibis and Before You Accuse Me. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review, calling it his most satisfying disc since 461 Ocean Boulevard. The magazine also noted that the title of the album reflected Clapton’s continued preference to down play his guitar god image, preferring to consider himself a journeyman, but a damn fine one who always finds work! In keeping with the album’s title, EC spent much of 1990 on the road visiting 5 continents. This soundboard recording captures EC on September 29, 1990, 31 years ago today in Chile.

1979s - #5:  On August 15, 1976, I saw Elton John live at Madison Square Garden during his Louder Than The Concorde Tour, an amazing night of music that served as the inspiration for my self published Book, Ten Rules Of The Road I Learned at My First Concert (buy it here). A year earlier, Elton played a series of shows in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain time zones in the US, a run aptly named West of The Rockies, referring both to the geography of the tour and his most recent album, Rock Of The Westies! This excellent audience recording (from the archives of legendary taper Mike Millard)  captures Elton's 31 song marathon in San Diego on September 29, 1975, 46 years ago today. As this show was opening night of the tour, Elton tests out a a host of tunes, many of which would not appear in later shows or in the Louder Than The Concorde Set list, such as Street Kids, Have Mercy On The Criminal and Better Off Dead. The show also features what Elton calls the first ever performance of “Harmony.” The show captures Elton at the height of both his artistic and commercial success.

1970s - #4: As 1971 began, the Allman Brothers Band was riding a wave of critical success. Their 2nd album, Idlewild South, released in late 1970, had received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The band’s best work, however, was still to come. The Allmans played 2 shows at the Fillmore East on March 12 and 13, which would be recorded and then released as a live album in July of that year. The resulting 2 disc set, simply entitled At Fillmore East, is often called the finest live album ever produced. Rolling Stone ranked it 49th on its list of the greatest albums in rock history. That album sealed the Allman’s reputation as one of rock’s most innovative, exciting and powerful live acts. While the Fillmore shows get the attention thanks to the historic album that documented them, the truth is that on almost every night in 1971, The Allmans, with Duane leading the way, were on fire. This soundboard recording captures the band in Texas on September 28, 1971, a half century ago ago today, and just 6 months after the band's historic Fillmore East shows. Tragically, Duane would die in a motorcycle crash just a month after this show.

1980s - #6: On May 29, 1987, John Hiatt released the album Bring The Family, and quickly became an “overnight sensation”. Of course, earning that label was 13 years and 7 prior albums in the making. In fact, when Hiatt recorded Bring The Family, he was actually on the verge of quitting the business, having recently been dropped by his record label. Hiatt, with encouragement from John Chelew of McCabe's Guitar Shop who had heard some of the early versions of tunes that wound up on the album, decided to take one more crack at recording. Demon Records in the UK put up about $30,000 to help Hiatt record an album. Then old friends, Nick Lowe, Ry Cooder and Jim Keltner joined Hiatt in the studio. Due to budget constraints, the entire record had to be recorded in just 4 days. Hiatt and Lowe actually shared a hotel room at a local Holiday Inn to save money (Lowe, by the way, took no payment for his contribution). The result - Bring The Family became one of the cornerstones of Hiatt’s career, featuring songs such as Memphis in the Meantime, Thing Called Love, Lipstick Sunset Have a Little Faith in Me, Thank You Girl and Learning How to Love You. This soundboard recording captures Hiatt on September 26, 1987, 34 year ago this very day, in Houston, in support of his breakthrough album.

2000s - #5: On September 25, 2008, 13 years ago today, Sir Paul McCarteny played his first concert in Israel, at Ganey Yehoshua Park in Tel Aviv. The Beatles had been scheduled to play there in 1965, but the Israeli the government cancelled the performance due to budget reasons and, per an official document, "because several politicians in the Knesset believed at the time that [their] performance might corrupt the minds of the Israeli youth". McCartney's solo performance also faced opposition, not from the government but rather from Islamic extremists who warned "If he values his life Mr. McCartney must not come to Israel,"  Undaunted, Sir Paul went ahead with the show, refusing to be cowered by terrorist threats. This soundboard recording captures highlights of that historic performance, dubbed the Friendship First Concert.

2000s - # 4: On May 7, 2003, Fleetwood Mac launched their first tour in 6 years, which would encompass 3 North American legs, plus visits to Europe and Australia, before coming to a close over a year later on September 14, 2004. Four of the 5 members of the group that recorded Rumours, - Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood - reunited for the tour, which was designed to support their latest album, Say You Will. That disc went to #3 on the Billboard charts, the band’s first to climb that high since Mirage in 1982, over two decades prior. Rumours era band mate Christine McVie, while declining to tour, did add vocals on several of the tunes of the album. Just shows that in rock, as in life, the more things change, the more they stay the same. This soundboard recoding captures them in Boston during that tour, on September 25, 2003, 18 years ago today.

Lawsuits from other members of the band prevented them from using the Bachman-Turner Overdrive name, so they simply utilized their last names for both the recording and the live shows.  The Bachman-Turner album was released in September 2010, and the tour carried over into the following year. This FM broadcast captures the duo on their home turf in Canada, o September 24, 2011, a decade ago today, playing a host of BTO hits, as well as a Guess Who classics!

1980s - #5: In June 1983, the Police released the album, Synchronicity, which went to #1 on the charts in both the US and the UK. In fact, the album sold over 8 million copies in the US, and won the Grammy for best performance by a rock group. The single from the album, Every Breath You Take, also hit number 1, and won 2 Grammy’s, for song of the year and for best performance by a rock group. The band appeared to be on the top of the rock world. Unfortunately, tensions inside the group were tearing it apart. At one point during the recording of Synchronicity, Sting and Stewart Copeland came to blows. Each band member actually recorded their parts of the album in separate rooms. The Synchronicity tour turned out to be the band’s last for over 20 years, as they disbanded once it ended. Except for a few rare performances, the band did not tour again until 2007. This AM radio broadcast of their performance in Nimes on September 23, 1983, 38 years ago today, captures the band at the height of their popularity, with fans little suspecting that the end was near.

He even  nicknamed himself the 5th Beatle! He moved to FM radio in the late 1960s and helped pioneer free form radio.  He also launched a TV program, called Murray The K In New York, featuring up and coming rock artists. This soundbaord recording captures his September 22, 1967 show, from 54 years ago today, featuring The Doors, who had burst on the scene earlier that year with their debut album and the single Light My Fire. By the way, this TV appearance took place just 5 days after the legendary Ed Sullivan show where the Doors also performed Light My Fire.  Jim Morrison, against Sullivan's, sang the line "we couldn't get much higher", resulting in Ed canceling 6 other scheduled appearances!

1980s - #4: Pink Floyd's 1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of reason, was the band's first without long time member Roger Waters. The recording of the album was marked by ongoing legal battles between David Glimour and Waters over the rights to the name "Pink Floyd". In the end, Gilmour won the legal war and the right to use the name "Pink Floyd" in perpetuity. None of the legal issues, nor the absence of Waters, seemed to matter to the fans. The album went to #3 in both the US and UK. Pink Floyd launched a North American in 1987, even before the album was complete and shows sold out instantly. The tour quickly went world wide and wouldn't end until after 200 performances for an audience of 4.25 million fans. This soundboard captures the band during that tour, on September 19, 1987, 34 years ago today, in Philadelphia.

1970s - #3: In August 1978, Bruce headlined the Worlds Greatest Arena, Madison Square Garden, for the first time, a 3 night sold out run. (I was there but that’s a story for another post). By the way, Bruce had appeared at MSG in June 1973, as the lead in band for Chicago! Despite making the leap to 20,000 seat arenas, Bruce was still at the point in his career where he could also play smaller concert halls. That’s just what he did on September 17, 1978, 32 years ago today, when he nearly brought down the house at the Palladium, a 3000 seat theater on 14th Street in NY. Opening with Badlands from his recently released album, Darkness on The Edge of Town, Bruce blazed through 25 songs in a 2 ½ hour crescendo of rock and roll. While the set list is heavy on tunes from Darkness and Born To Run, it also features previews of The River, in Independence Day and Point Blank, early classics such as Rosalita, Spirits in The Night, Incident on 57th Street and Kitty’s Back, and rare gems such as Because The Night and Fire. This soundboard captures the entire show, with the exception of the final encore, Quarter To Three. You’ll want this one for your collection, as within a few years, Bruce graduated to stadium size shows, making this the last national tour where he still played venues such as the Palladium.

1960s - #5: This FM broadcast captures the Jefferson Airplane in Amsterdam on September 15, 1968, 53 years ago today but its more famous for what transpired with The Doors, who they were on tour with. On this night, Jim Morrison ingested far too many of the pills and narcotics found freely on the streets of the city. As a result, when the Airplane launched into Fantastic Plastic Lover, Morrison walked onstage and began dancing to the music. It wasn’t long before the drugs, the dancing, the music, well just about everything, hit him, and he toppled over, passed out. The Doors played their set later that night, sans Jim, with Ray Manzarek filling in on vocals.

1970s - #2: When Bruce Springsteen took the rock world by storm in 1975, he opened the door for other Jersey Shore acts to try to hit the big time. Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes are probably the 2nd best known band from that era. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. Unfortunately, Van Zandt left the band in 1979, and they never did achieve national prominence. That said, Southside and the Jukes have always been fantastic live performers, as evidenced in this soundboard recording of their show in Delaware on September 14, 1977, 44 years ago today.  Note - the info file says this show was in Wilmington in September, which is confirmed here but the artwork says Philadelphia in November!!
