Leon Russell rose to prominence in the early 1970s with a string of accomplishments that any artist would envy.  In early 1970, he organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You, That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad And Deep As You. In March 1971, he produced some tracks for Bob Dylan in including Watching The River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece, both of which prominently featured Russell's gospel-flavored piano. In August, he played a set as part of George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh. He also played on Badfinger's album Straight Up, including piano on the band's hit single, Day After Day. On top of all that, Russell released 2 albums in 1971 - Leon Russell & The Shelter People in May and Asylum Choir II in November.  It was the start of what would become a Hall Of Fame carrer, as Leon was inducted into that institution in 2001. This soundboard recording captures him nearly 30 years after his early 1970s hey day, and 12 years before his Rock Hall Induction, in Los Angeles on February 20, 1999, 26 years ago today.

2011 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2011-03-14 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2011 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony was, as cleveland.com put it, "a night for toasting cult figures, fringe characters, and somewhat unsung heroes." Neil Diamond, Leon Russell, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Dr. John and Darlene Love made up a class that to call it eclectic would be an undertstatement. In fact, cleveland.com suggested it might be the worst hall of fame class in history in terms of star power.  That said, every inductee showed up and played a set, filling the Waldorf with some of rock's most iconic tunes, from Right Place, Wrong Time to A Song for You to School's Out to Da Doo Run Run to Sweet Caroline.

In 1979, 2 musical legends, Willie Nelson and Leon Russell collaborated on an album called One For The Road. In many ways, One For The Road continued the work Willie had started with his previous album, Stardust. where he covered 10 legendary pop standards, such as the title track, Georgia on My Mind, Blue Skies and September Song. Stardust had received rave critical reviews, and went to # 1 on the Billboard Country charts, as well as #30 on the magazine's top 200 album chart. While One For The Road wasn't as successful critically or commercially, the concept of covering standards continued, as the album included covers of Danny Boy, Don't Fence Me In Stormy Weather and You Are My Sunshine, just to name a few. It also featured Willie and Leon teaming up on Heartbreak Hotel, which was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard Country charts.  The duo decided to tour in support if the album, including this show from New Jersey on April 1, 1979, 41 years ago today. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad and Deep as You.  Finally, later that year, on December 5, 1970, 46 years ago today, Russell recorded the Homewood Sessions, which became the first concert performance broadcast simulcast on radio (KPPC-FM) and television (PBS station KCET). While the show was intended for official release that never happened,  but fortunately this FM broadcast preserves that historic show for all of us to enjoy.  RIP.

Electric Proms #2: Much has been written about Buffalo Springfield’s reunion concerts in October 2010, an event 42 years in the making, including an entire post right here on this blog just days ago. Believe it or not, that same month, 2 other rock legends reunited, also after not playing together for 4 decades! Elton John and Leon Russell first met at Elton’s initial US show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in 1970. They played several shows together later that year, including a legendary show at the Fillmore East on November 21. At that time, Elton was still climbing the ladder to super stardom while Leon was already established as one of the finest session musicians and songwriters in the business. The two then lost touch; so much so that when Elton called Leon in early 2009 to discuss working together, Leon was completely shocked as they had not spoken for almost 35 years. Elton had been listening to Leon’s music while on safari in Africa, and was so moved that he felt compelled to reach out to his long lost friend and inspiration. That phone call led to a recording session, during which Elton and Leon produced the aptly titled album, The Union. For Elton, The Union marks a return the acoustic-based, country-flavored sound of his early recordings like Tumbleweed Connection. It also presented an opportunity to garner renewed recognition for one of his idols. “If Leon can get the accolades he deserves and be financially O.K. for the rest of his life, I will have done something decent with my music,” Elton said in a call from his home in France. The duo followed up the album’s release with a brief concert tour starting at the Beacon Theater in New York on October 18 and ending in Florida on November 21. They played one date together outside the US, on October 28, 2010, 4 years ago today, at The Electric Proms Festival at the Roundhouse in London. This FM broadcast captures every note of that historic performance, including the entire Union album, classic Leon tunes such as Delta Lady and Song For You, and a host of Elton’s best songs, such as Burn Down The Mission, Levon and Tiny Dancer. By the way, pay special attention to the tune In The Hands of Angels,, which Leon wrote for Elton. The song tells the tale of the album, and was Leon’s way to thank Elton, the guv’ner” in the lyrics, who “knew all the places I needed to go” and made him “feel the love down deep inside.”
