Incredibly, it will be 50 years ago June 1 that the Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play! That album launched what will forever be known as The Summer Of Love, and that's our theme for June.

So in June, we'll focus on bands that figured prominently in the Summer of Love, such as The Beatles, The Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, etc.  In addition, we'll bring you the complete Monterrey Pop Festival, the historic event that launched the rock festival era that culminated with Woodstock 2 years later.  Moreover, we'll branch out to cover all of 1967 in our posts, as it was a historic year for debut albums, innovation in music, and even Monkeemania.

Farewell To Greg Allman

Was away for the holiday weekend so just wanted to take a moment to honor the memory of Greg Allman.  Folks who have followed this blog since the beginning know that the Allmans have always been prominently featured on So Many Roads.  Greg was one of the great voices in rock history,filed with soul, and the band could electrify an audience. My condolence his family and friends, and my thanks for the wonderful tunes and performances that will always be a part of my musical journey. May he rest in peace and be re-united with his brother, Duane, in heaven above,

Elvis Presley 1974 - #1: Starting in August 1969, Colonel Parker signed Elvis Presley to a 5 year deal to appear at the Hilton International Hotel in Las Vegas every February and August, for the then unheard of sum of $1 million annually. In the summer of 1971, rather than send The King on a tour between the two stints in Vegas, Parker booked him at the Sahara Hotel in Lake Tahoe for 2 weeks, leading into his August run at the International. Elvis opened in Lake Tahoe on July 20, 1971, playing the first of what would be 28 shows over the 2 week run. He would come back again in 1973, 1974, and 1976, ultimately giving a total of 98 sold out performances in the hotel's High Sierra Theatre.  This soundboard recording captures Elvis during his 3rd run in Lake Tahoe, which ran from May 16 to May 27, on May 26, 1973, 44 years ago today. The Firm 1985 - #1: We brought you some Robert Plant earlier this month. so figured we should give equal time to Jimmy Page. For a brief time in the mid-1980's, Page, formerly of Led Zeppelin, and Paul Rodgers, formerly of Bad Company banded together to form The Firm. The released 2 albums, their self titled debut in February 1985, which went to #17 on the Billboard charts and a follow up disc year later, entitled Mean Business, which climbed to #22 on the charts. The biggest single was Radioactive, off the first album which Went to #28 on the charts and received extensive FM airplay. This soundboard recording captures The Firm on tour in support of their debut album, in Edinburgh, on May 20, 1985, 32 years go today. That era featured Garcia's best playing in the wake of his recovery from a 1986 diabetic coma, as evidenced by the significant number of official releases from that time period. So, today we'll bring you the first half of a Same Tour, Different Show entry featuring the Jerry Garcia Band's Spring 1989 tour.  This one's a soundboard recording from San Diego from May 20, 1989, 28 years ago today. How We Chose What We Post At So Many Roads

Over the 7 plus years we've running So Many Roads,, I’ve gotten numerous questions on how we choose what to post. I’ve also gotten several requests for certain bands or types of music. Given all that, I thought I’d take a minute to explain how we decide on what to post. I consider 3 things in deciding what bands/concerts to post at So Many Roads:

1. Sound Quality: Basically, no show gets posted unless the sound quality is top notch. Over 90% of what we post at So Many Roads are soundboard or FM broadcasts. When I first started this site some 7 & 1/2 years ago, I took the advice of Tunzmaster Dino, from the legendary D&P’s Bootleg Tunzworld, that no one wants to hear a show that sounds like it was recorded in your bathroom with the water running. Sound quality is king. And sound quality should never be confused with file type.  Just because a show is captured on FLAC files doesn't automatically mean it sounds good.  Dino's drunken rant on Guitars 101 on the FLAC vs MP3 debate is the stuff of legends! In any event, while we have increased the number of audience recordings over the years, we do our best to make sure they sound great. Occasionally, maybe 1 or 2% of the time, we’ll post a less than great sounding show for historical or sentimental reasons, but 99 out of 100 times, if not more, we’re bringing you a soundboard or broadcast quality show.


2. The Date: Given that this blog has evolved to feature a this date in history” approach, the show we post each day has to be from that day! So, if its November 22, then we’ll find a concert from November 22 from some year between 1955 and today. When you see posts such as Concerts From Today in History or some other type of announcement, it means I couldn’t find a show from that day that I felt was worth posting.


3. My Taste In Music: In the end, I post shows that feature music I enjoy. You see lots of shows at So Many Roads from the Grateful Dead, The Beatles, CSNY, Eric Clapton Van Morrison, the Allman Brothers, etc. because that’s what I listen to every day. I’m not a fan of heavy metal, grunge or progressive rock, so you don’t see any posts from bands that play those styles of music. I like the blues, but in small doses, which is why you only get occasional posts from artists such as Muddy Waters, Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughn. I’m into live music, not studio outtakes, so you’ll see very few of the latter type of posts here at So Many Roads. I know that my musical tastes may differ from others, which is why I link to sites such as The New JDP, Reliquary, Arizona Jones and The Midnight Cafe, just to name a few, where you can often find music I may not post. By the way, the number of times I post a band usually reflects how much I enjoy their music but not always. You’d see far more Beatles posts, for example, but unfortunately, there are far too few high quality concert recordings available. Same goes for The Band from the Robbie Robertson era, Rockpile and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few.

Jimi Hendrix 1968 - #2.  Here's the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entry featuring Jimi Hendrix in 1968.  This one's a soundboard recording from the Miami Pop Festival from May 18, 1968, 49 years go today. Miami Pop actually took place in Hallandale, FL at Gulfstream race track (if you're a horse race fan, you'll know that Gulfstream was recently renovated, has hosted the Breeder's Cup, and annually hosts the Florida Derby, one of the major prep races for the Kentucky Derby). About 25,000 people attended Miami Pop, which was promoted by Richard O'Barry and Michael Lang, later famous as the promoter of Woodstock. In addition to Hendrix, the festival featured The Mothers of Invention, Blue Cheer, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
