Old & In The Way 1973 - Back To Back - #1: In early 1973, Jerry Garcia plunged into a new side-project, a bluegrass group called Old and in the Way, The band featured Garcia on banjo and vocals, John Kahn on string bass, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, and guitarist/singer Peter Rowan. Fiddler Richard Greene joined in April of 1973, but juggling his own band in LA, dropped out after a couple of months and was replaced first by John Hartford, and eventually by the legendary Vassar Clements. The band broke up due to fighting between Rowan and Grisman, but plans were in place for a comeback before Jerry’s tragic death in 1995. Old & In The Way would play 47 shows between January 1973 and April 1974. This soundboard recording captures them in San Francisco on July 23 1973, 53 years ago today.

In fact, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, This soundboard recording captures the duo at the Keystone in Berkeley on June 10, 1973, 53 years ago today. I only saw the Marshall Tucker Band in concert just once, as the lead in to the Grateful Dead on September 3, 1977 at Englishtown, NJ. That was my first Dead show and it was so good that it was officially released as part of the Dick's Picks series. Over 150,000 showed up to see the Dead, Marshall Tucker and the New Riders, the largest concert in terms of attendance in NJ history. The MTB played a great set, finishing with a smoking hot version of Can't You See which still ranks as one of the best songs I've ever heard live. 

This FM broadcast goes back 4 years prior to when I saw the MTB, capturing them at Ulrasonic Studios in Hempstead on June 19, 1973, 53 years ago today. Broadcast on WLIR-FM, the shows from Ultrasonic Studios featured rock artists playing live before a small studio audience. Not to be outdone, the East Coast had a similar series of shows broadcast on WLIR-FM from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead NY. In addition the the MTB, artists such as Billy Joel, Lou Reed, Peter Frampton, Little Feat, The Band, Jackson Browne, The Doobie Brothers, and Hall and Oates, just to name a few. all played at Ultrasonic Studios.

In the late 1960s, in the wake of her separation from husband and song writing partner, Gerry Goffen, Carole King left her hometown of New York City and moved to Laurel Canyon in Califoria.  Working with producer Lou Adler, King recrded her masterpiece, Tapestry, in 1971, an album that went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in that spot for 15 consecutive weeks.  The album won 4 Grammy Awards, and also spawned the #1 single, It's Too Late.  Two years after that success, King made a triumphant return to New York City. Adler called promter Ron Delsner and explained that Carole wanted to do something special for her original hometown.  Delsner agreed to stage the first ever concert on Central Park's Great Lawn, a free event that would attract over 100,000 fans.  This TV soundboard recording captures that famed concert, when Carole King returned home, on May 26, 1973, 53 years ago today.

Bobby Darin - 1973-04-20 - Burbank, CA (TV SBD)

Bobby Darin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, alongside the Four Seasons, The Four Tops, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Who, just to name a few members of that class. S his bio in the Rock Hall states, Darin had no limits as a performer: "Teen idol. Adult crooner. Vegas lounge singer. Rock and roll star. Bobby Darin flirted with many musical personae and rocked them all." Nine years later he would be inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. One of the great voices of our times, and one of my personal favorite singers.  

This TV soundboard recording captures Darin on April 20, 1973, 53 years ago today, on the next to last episode of his variety show. What no one knew at the time, however, was that the show would be Darin's swan song. The incomparable singer would die on December 20, 1973, after 5 hours of open heart surgery failed to repair his already damaged heart, which had suffered a fatal infection when Darin failed to take medications designed to protect his heart prior to a dentist visit earlier that month. He was only 37 years old.  Note: we posted this show several years ago but since then, have found 5 more songs - we're still missing a few but its more of Bobby than we had before!

1970s - #7: In 1971, the Allman Brothers lost founder, spiritual leader and guitar virtuoso, Duane Allman, in a motor cycle accident. In 1972, another motorcycle accident, just blocks from where Duane died, claimed the life of bassist Berry Oakley. Those twin losses would have finished most bands. The Allmans, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, however, somehow reached new heights of success and popularity in 1973. The single Rambling Man reached #2 of the Billboard charts, and helped spur interest in other Southern rock bands, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans on tour during that historic year, Fort Worth, on March 24, 1973, 53 years ago today.

1970s -#4: In early 1973, Paul McCartney agreed to star in a television special for the British ATV network in order to settle his two-year legal dispute with Sir Lew Grade. As the owner of the network and its music publishing division, which included the Beatles' Northern Songs catalogue, Grade had objected to Maccartney crediting his wife Linda as his co-writer since 1971, citing her lack of professional experience as a songwriter and musician. McCartney's commitment to the television project allowed him to retain the 2nd composer's publishing royalties, which otherwise would have been assigned to Grade's company. The TV show, entitled James Paul McCartney, was Paul's first such special since the Beatles' 1967 television film Magical Mystery Tour. The show's closing section featured a tape of McCartney & Wings performing live on March 18, 1973, 53 years ago today. By the way, this early version of Wings featured Henry McCullough on guitar.  He'd be replaced by Jimmy McCulloch  by the time of the Wings Over The World Tour in 1975/1976. One other note - Long Tall Sally was included in the US broadcast of the TV show while The European version of the program rsubstituted it with Hi Hi Hi.

Led Zeppelin - 1973-01-07 - Oxford, UK (SBD) 

1970s - #1: On November 30, 1972, Led Zeppelin launched a 25 date tour of the UK, which ran until January 30, 1973, their first shows in their home country in just about a year. The original 110,000 tickets, priced a £1, sold out within four hours of the box offices opening on November 10. This run of shows holds an interesting place in Led Zeppelin's history for several reasons. First, it was the last full fledged tour of the UK by the band. The only subsequent shows that they would play in England prior to John Bonham’s death in 1980 would be 5 nights at Earl’s Court in 1975 and 2 performances at Knebworth on 1979. Second, the tour would also be the last time that the band played small venues, such as the 1800 seat New Theatre in Oxford. The arena/stadium era would commence for Led Zep right after these shows. Finally, this tour was supposed to have produced the first Led Zep live album, however, the band eventually decided to use the Madison Square Garden performances later that year for the disc The Song Remains The Same. This soundboard recording from January 7, 1973, 53 years ago today, captures Led Zep on in Oxford, about ½ way through the tour.

Those programs, which originated from Sausalito CA, featured rock artists playing live before a small studio audience. Not to be outdone, the East Coast had a similar series of shows broadcast on WLIR-FM from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead NY. The roster for those broadcasts included Billy Joel, Lou Reed, Peter Frampton, Little Feat, The Band, Jackson Browne, The Doobie Brothers, and the Marshall Tucker Band, just to name a few. This WLIR-FM broadcast from the Ultrasonic Studios features Hall & Oates, from November 18, 1973, 52 years ago today. The dDuo feature tracks from their recently released album, abandoned Lunceonette, including the sing;e She's Gone, which initially did not farewell on the charts, but when re-released in 1976, climbed all the way to the #7 spot on the charts.

1970s - #1: In 1970, Bill Withers was working as an assembler for Douglas Aircraft while trying to break into the music business. Sussex records liked his demo tape, and assigned the legendary Booker T Jones to produce his debut album. In 1971, Bill Withers released the album Just As I Am, and the rest is history. The single from that album, Ain't No Sunshine, sold over a million copies, and won a Grammy for best R&B song. His 2 follow up singles, both released in 1972, Lean on Me and Use Me, also sold over a million copies. This FM Broadcast features Withers singing all 3 of his hit tunes at the Paris Theater in London on November 11, 1973, 52 years ago today.

Lou Reed has made 3 appearances at Farm Aid - the inaugural event in 1985, then in 1987 and finally in 1990. 

This soundboard recording captures him long before those Farm Aid sets, on September 20, 1973, 52 years ago today at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. A few months earlier, in July, Reed had released the concept album Berlin which tells the tale of a couple, Jim and Caroline, and their struggle with drug addiction and abuse. The album was initially a commercial and critical disaster, though over the years opinions have changed, with Rolling Stone even ranking it at #334 on its list of the greatest albums of all time.

Grateful Dead - 1973-07-27 - Watkins Glen, NY (Sound Check) (SBD)

Every rock fan knows the story of Watkins Glen, the Summer Jam festival attended by over 600,000 fans who showed up on July 28, 1973 to see and hear The Band, The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead. Today's post, however, captures the Dead the night before that concert in a performance that has become the stuff of legends. Thousands of fans had descended upon Watkins Glen by July 27, 1973, 52 years ago today, camping out overnight in anticipation of the next day's festivities. Robbie Robertson of the Band requested to do a sound check, but was concerned about the crowd in front of the stage. Promoter Bill Graham gave the ok to go ahead with the sound check, so the The Band ran through a few numbers to the delight of the audience. The Allmans did their sound check next, playing One Way Out and Ramblin' Man. Finally it was The Grateful Dead's turn for a sound check. Instead of playing one or two songs and calling it a night, the Dead performed 6, then announced they were going to take a short break, but be right back. They returned to play 5 more tunes, including a 21 minute jam that some Deadheads feel is the finest improvisational work that the band ever performed (go here for more details). Yet, another amazing chapter in their long strange trip, a sound check that turned into a 2 set marathon. Grateful Dead - 1973-05-13 - Des Moines, IA (SBD) 

1970s - #5: In the Spring of 1973, the Grateful Dead found themselves rebounding from personnel losses. Drummer Mickey Hart had left the band in late 1971, and would not return until 1974. In early 1973, original keyboardist Ron "Pigpen" Mckernan passed away at age 27, the first of the band's keyboard players to die tragically. The Dead's sound began a new evolution, with Bill Kreuztman handling the drums solo, while Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux added new musical elements to the mix. Keith's piano playing was more jazzy compared to Pigpen's bluesy sound, while Donna Jean helped fill out the band's harmonies. New tunes such as Jimmy Row, Let It Grow, Eyes Of The World, Loose Lucy and Wave That Flag (an early version of U.S. Blues) entered the band's repertoire. By year end, the band would even launch their own record label! This soundboard recording captures The Dead testing their new musical boundaries on May 13, 1973, 52 years ago today.

1970s - #5: In early 1973, Elton John launched a tour of Europe, right on the heels of releasing the album Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player, which would become his first UK #1 disc, and his 2nd consecutive #1 album in the US. This very good audience recording of Elton in Italy on April 13, 1973, 52 years ago today, is one of very few tapes from that that period of Elton's career.  While the sound quality is a bit below our normal standards, we had to post it for its historical significance.  The set list provides a hint of the heights of fame Sir Elton would soon hit, as it includes early versions of 2 classics from the soon to be released Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Love Lies Bleeding (without Funeral For A Friend), and Candle In The Wind.

1970s - #3: In 1971, the Allman Brothers lost founder, spiritual leader and guitar virtuoso, Duane Allman, in a motor cycle accident. In 1972, another motorcycle accident, just blocks from where Duane died, claimed the life of bassist Berry Oakley. Those twin losses would have finished most bands. The Allmans, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, however, somehow reached new heights of success and popularity in 1973. The single Rambling Man reached #2 of the Billboard charts, and helped spur interest in other Southern rock bands, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. This soundbaord recording captures the Allmans on tour during that historic year, in Charleston, on April 6, 1973, 52 years ago today.
