1983: When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new band became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. This FM broadcast catches Kihn on September 23, 1983, 43 years ago today, in San Francisco. Download this one, and while you listen, you just might want your MTV!

In the early 1980s, punk and new wave music started to move more into the mainstream, as evidenced locally by the fact that classic rock station WNEW-FM began to play those genres.  As a result I found myself listening to and enjoying a host of new artists, which in turn led me to buy tickets to concerts by those bands.  Between 1980 and 1983, I attended shows by The Clash, The Pretenders, Joan Jett, Joe Jackson, The Police, The Go Gos, Pat Benatar, Robin Lane, and The Ramones, just to name a few.  I also got to see a local band, from nearby Hoboken NJ, called the Bongos, on December 31, 1982 at the Mudd Club in New York. The Bongos had released an album entitled Drums Along The Hudson, which featured a host of tunes, such as Bulrushes, Zebra Club and In The Congo, that blended guitar driven pop with dance rhythms. It became anther one of those discs that went on my turntable and never came off.

While I'm fairly certain no tape exists of the New Year's Eve show I attended (no one could have been sober enough to make a recording!!), I did find this FM broadcast from Columbia University, from about 6 months later, on August 21, 1983, 43 years ago today. Only wish this one had Zebra Club on it!

JS 1983 - Back To Back - #1: After John Sebastian left the Lovin Spoonful in 1968, he embarked on a solo career that never quite acheived the same level of critical or commercial success. The one major exception was his 1976 number 1 single, Welcome Back, which served as the theme song to the televison comedy Welcome Back, Kotter, starring Gabel Kaplan in the title role.  This soundboard recording captures Sebastian some 7 years later, during the early show at Roickefeller's in Houston, playing tht tune along with plenty of ongs from his Lovin' Spoonful days. Before an enthusiastic audience gathered at Scaggs Telecommunications Studios, Kaylan, Volman, and friends deliver a high energy set comprised of four of The Turtles greatest hits of the 1960s in addition to two of the most popular Flo & Eddie songs of the 1970s. By the way, Gary Puckett has been a frequent participant in the Happy Together tour, an oldies tour that Kaylan and Volman launched in 2010 that is till running today.

Besides the 50 times I saw the Dead live, I attended 4 Jerry Garcia Band concerts - in March 1978 at the Capitol Theater, in March 1980, also at the Capitol (a show that has been officially released), in August 1984 at Caldwell College and finally in November 1991 at Madison Square Garden (another one that has been officially released). Garcia solo shows were like Dead concerts in some ways as some songs overlapped, the set lists were unpredictable and the jamming intense, but unlike them in others. Garcia on his own played an amazing variety of covers not found in the Dead's set lists, broke out some of his rarer solo tunes, and took far more solos than he would when jamming with the Dead. To sum it up, seeing Garcia solo was not seeing the Dead, and vice versa.

This excellent audience recording captures Garcia at Roseland in New York on June 1, 1983, 43 years ago today, about 6 month's after the release his last solo studio album, entitled Run For The Roses. With the exception of the title track, and a cover of Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, it was hardly Garcia’s most inspired work. In part, that reflected his ongoing battles with drug addiction. It also reflected a growing disinterest on his part in making studio albums in general. For example, the Grateful Dead would go 7 years, from 1980 to 1987 without releasing a studio album. Even that 1987 album, In The Dark, was recorded on stage in a theater, though without an audience, in hopes of giving the tunes more of a live concert feel. Playing live was, ironically, both Garcia’s comfort zone and where he could experiment musically. In 1983, he played 75 solo shows, in addition to touring with the Dead, but unlike most bands, the concerts weren’t designed to promote the album.  Only one tune from Run For The Roses, for example  namely the title track, was included in his set list at Roseland.

Over Memorial Day Weekend 1983, Steve Wozniak of Apple hosted the 2nd US Festival (the first has been discussed here) at Glen Helen Regional Park near Devore, California. Over 650,000 people attended the 3 day event, and Wozniak lost over $12 million! Each day featured a different musical genre. Opening Day, May 28 was New Wave Day, with such acts as The Clash, English Beat, INXS, Flock of Seagulls, Stray Cats and Men At Work. I'm not quite sure how the last 2 qualified as New Wave! Day 2, was Heavy Metal Day and included Van Halen, Ozzy, and Judas Priest. Finally, day 3 was Rock Day (as if the other 2 days weren't rock??) and featured U2, David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Joe Walsh and, this post's featured band, the Pretenders. This TV SBD recording captures The Clash from the US Festival on opoening day, May 28, 1983, 43 years ago today.  By the way, this set almost didn't happen as The Clash got into a dispute with the local promoters about their fee for the show.  Moreover, it turned out to be the last gig Mick Jones ever played with the band. You can read more about all that here.

In April 1982, Marshall Crenshaw released his self-titled debut album. I bought it on the advice of a buddy, who had heard about Mr. Crenshaw on WBCN-FM while attending college at UMass. The disc went on my turntable and rarely came off! Why Crenshaw never took rock by storm is beyond me. The album has everything – catchy tunes, great hooks, excellent vocals, Beatle and Buddy Holly influences (FYI - Crenshaw played John Lennon in an off-Broadway production of Beatlemania and portrayed Buddy Holly in the movie, La Bamba). Songs such as Cynical Girl, Someday Someway, and Rocking Around in NYC get in your head, grab you and never let go. Yet, while he received critical acclaim, super stardom never followed. By the way, Crenshaw’s 2nd album, Field Day, released in June 1983, is just as good and includes the near perfect (at least I think so) Whenever You're On My Mind.  This soundboard recording captures him between the release of those 2 discs, on Soundstage, on May 2, 1983, 43 years ago today.  One note - while everything on line indicates that May 2 is the performance date of this show, I suspect it may be the broadcast date. Seems hard to believe that Crensahw would perfrom a show in May 1983, a month before a new album came out, and not include a single track from it in his set.  Either way, its a great recording!

David Bowie - 1983-04-27 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

David Bowie was part of the 1996 Rock Hall Of Fame class, which also included Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jefferson Airplane, Little Willie John, Pink Floyd, Pete Seeger, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. David Byrne of the Talking Heads presented Bowie for induction. Bowie, wasn’t in the building, however, as he was in Helsinki, Finland, touring in support of his album, Outside. Madonna accepted on his behalf, and Marianne Faithful performed Rebel Rebel.  Stevie Ray Vaughn was elected in 2015, along with his band Double Trouble. Other inductees that year included Lou Reed, Bill Withers, Joan Jett and Ringo Starr.

This post goes back 13 years earlier to Bowie's tour in support of the Let's Dance album, when he teamed up with Vaughn. While attending the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival, Bowie was impressed by a then unknown blues guitarist by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughan. So much so, that Bowie invited Vaughan to play on his next album. That disc, entitled, Let’s Dance, would blend a dance format with blues guitar rock to create a distinctive and unique sound. The public loved it, as the album went to #4 on the US Billboard charts and climbed all the way to the top spot in the UK. The album yielded 3 top 15 singles in the US, Modern Love at #14, China Girl at #10 and the title track which reached #1. When Bowie went on tour in support of the album, however, SRV could not accompany him due to contractual issues. This soundboard recording captures the tour rehearsals in Dallas on April 27, 1983, 3 decades ago today. Download this one to hear the unique partnership of David Bowie and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

1980s - #3:  From 1968 to 1975. Three Dog Night dominated the Billboard singles chart. The band scored 21 Top 40 hits, including 3 that reached the top spot, each featuring a different lead singer - Mama Told Me Not to Come (Cory Wells on lead), Joy to the World (Chuck Negron on lead); and Black and White (Danny Hutton on lead). Dunhill Records claimed that the band sold over 40 million record albums during that stretch. Soon after their run of hits ended, the band disbanded in July 1976. They reformed in 1981, and went on tour in 1983. This soundboard recording captures the band in Portland on March 19, 1983, 43 years ago today. The reunion would last for another 2 years, afterwhich the band parted ways with Chuck Negron due to his drug use.

Lou Reed 1983 - Back To Back - #1: In 1980, Lou reed stopped touring for almost 3 years, spending time instead in the studio working on 2 albums, The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts.  While neither cracked the top 150 on the Billboard charts, both received rave critical reviews, with the Robert Christgau, for example, giving each an A rating. Reed finally returned to the stage in early 1983, touring in support of both discs.  As part of that tour, he played 4 dates at the legendary Bottom Line nightclub in New York in late February/early March 1983, performing 2 shows each night.  Tickets were just $12.50. Today's post features 3 artists, all of whom I've seen live.  John Hiatt was the first show I attended after a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic, on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I saw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me betwen seeing an artist, behind America (38 years between 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021).  I saw Nick Lowe for the first time in July 1979 as part of Rockpile, at the same bill as Blondie at Belmont Race Track.  Then I saw Lowe for the 2nd time on April 1, 1983, backed by Paul Carrack. They led-in for Tom Petty.

This TV soundboard recording captures Hiatt, Lowe and Carrack in Hamburg on the German televison program Rockpalast on December 11, 1983, 42 years ago today.  Four years later, Lowe would help Hiatt record his breakthrough album, Bring The Family.

The Police’s 1981 Ghost in the Machine album tour put them on the map as rock super stars. Their tour in support of that disc made them the first new wave/punk band to graduate from playing clubs to headlining at 20,000 seat arenas such as Madison Square Garden on New York, where I saw them January 22, 1982. The follow up album, Synchronicity, released in June 1983, was another blockbuster, going to number 1 on the US and UK charts, and winning the band a Grammy Award for best rock performance by a duo or group. The album spawned 4 top 20 singles: Synchronicity II at #16, Wrapped Around Your Finger at #8, King of Pain at #3 and Every Breathe You Take, which went to the #1 spot and stayed there for 8 weeks. Despite all that success (or maybe because of it?), the band was beginning to come apart. The album was recorded with each member of the band in a separate room, ostensibly for engineering reasons, but in hindsight it is apparent that the arrangement symbolized that the band was no longer a cohesive unit. Moreover, during the recording of Every Breath You Take, Sting and Andy Summers came to blows in the studio. When the band went on the road in July 1983 in support of the album, no one knew that it would be the final world tour for the band (with the exception of 3 shows in 1986) until 2007! This soundboard recording captures the band during that final 20th century tour, in Scotland on December 11, 1983, 41 years ago today.

1983: In 1983, Rick Derringer released his 5th studio album, entitled Good Dirty Fun. He toured in support of he disc, including this show from November 29, 1983, 41 years ago today, in Cincinnati, as captured in this FM broadcast. But Derringer's album isn't the reason for this post. No, we selected this show because first, we needed something from 1983 to keep with this month's theme and second, it features Hang On Sloopy. The tune, recorded by Derringer when he was just 17 in 1965 while with the McCoys, is one of my guilty pleasures. The song actually went to #1 on the Billboard charts, but was knocked out of the top spot after just once week by a little known tune from a relatively obscure band - Yesterday by The Beatles! I actually heard the late, great Tom Petty play Hang On Sloopy live just a few months prior to this Derringer show, on April 1 1983 during at a concert at the Byrne Arena. By the way, Rick also breaks out a mean version of Rock n Roll Hoochie Koo!
