During the Grateful Dead’s 18 month hiatus from October 1974 to June 1976, Jerry Garcia engaged in a host of side projects. Those ranged from editing the Grateful Dead movie to recording new material to playing solo shows with assorted backing players. In addition, with the Dead off the road, Jerry took on their annual New Year's Eve spot. This soundboard recording captures that show at The keystone In Bereley on December 31 1975, 45 years ago today.  He's backed by Jon Kahn on bass, Nicky Hopkins on keyboards and Greg Errico on drums (Ron Tutt was absent so he could play with Elvis Presley!)  In addition, he gets som help from Matthew Kelly of Kingfish, as well as GD bandmates Bob Weir and  Mickey Hart!  The set list includes Auld Lang Syne, in keeping with our holiday song theme. By the way - I know this one has been officially released - grab it now as the link comes down tomorrow. Consider it a late Christmas present!

For Elton John, 2008 was just your typical year on the road - 140 concerts, 4 different continents, solo shows, full band shows, Red Piano Shows in both Las Vegas and Europe, political fund raisers, charity events - not bad at all for a 61 year old!  He capped it off with televised New year's show from London, on December 31, 2008, a dozen years ago today.  This soundboard captures all 11 songs that were broadcast, including, in keeping with our December theme, Auld Lang Syne.

In 2014, Billy Joel launched his residency at Madison Sqaure Garden, an ongoing tour in which he would play the "World' Most Famous Arena" once a month until folks stopped buying ticktes. The residency kicked off with a show at the Garden was January 27, 2014. At his thirteenth consecutive monthly performance (January 9, 2015), Joel broke his 2006 record for the most consecutive sold-out shows at the venue. On July 1, 2015, Joel set the record for most shows at the Garden by a single artist; his 65th all-time show broke the record previously held by Elton John. His 74th consecutive monthly (120th all-time) MSG performance was slated for March 2020, but it and the residency as a whole had to be postponed due to COVID-19. Despite lauching his MSG residency in 2014, Billy decided to close that year and ring in the new one in Orlando, as captured in this ALD recording from December 31, 2014, 6 years ago today. In keeping with our holiday song theme, Joel plays Auld Lang Syne, as well as a snipett of Jingle Bells!

Joan Osborne - 1992-12-31 - Wetlands, New York, NY (FM)

In 1995, Joan Osbourne, became an "overnight sensation" released her 2nd album and first on a major label, entitled Relish. The disc went to #9 on the Billboard charts, propelled there by the single One Of Us, which climbed all the way to the #4 spot. The song received Grammy nominations in 1996 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. Of course, as with so many artists who were branded "overnight sensations", Joan has toiled for years in small clubs, honing her craft and waiting for her big break. This FM broadcast captures Joan about 3 years before he commercial breakthrough, at Wetlands in New York City on December 31, 1992, 28 years ago today. In keeping with our holiday song theme, her set list includes Auld Lang Syne, not to mention a host of amazing covers, including Son Of A Preacher Man, Don't Let Me Down, Take Me To The River and Killing Floor.

In 1973 and 1974, Elton John finished the year by playing a series of Christmas Concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. In 1973, he played 3 nights, December 21, 22 and 23. The 2nd of those 3 shows, a soundboard recording, was posted on this blog a year ago . Then in 1974, he played 5 nights, December 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24. This is a soundboard recording of the last night in the series, December 24, 1974, 46 years ago today. Elton's set includes several songs from Caribou, which had been released in June 1974, including Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me, Grimsby and The Bitch is Back. And, in keeping iwth our theme, the show ends with a version of White Christmas that includes the unique pairing of Gary Glitter and Rod Stewart on backing vocals! Thirty five years ago today, on December 22, 1985, La Bamba & The Hubcaps hosted their 3rd Annual Christmas show at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. The event was a fund raiser for the Foundation To Find & Protect America's Children. La Bamba was actually Richie Rosenberg, a trombonist who had played with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Through originally from Philadelphia, Rosenburg relocated to the Jersey Shore once he became part of the Jukes. Several of Rosenburg’s friends showed up to help him celebrate Christmas 1985, including Gary US Bonds, Marshall Crenshaw, Gene Cornish of the Rascals, and David Johansen, as his alter ego Buster Poindexter! This WNEW FM broadcast captures all the festivities, including a final set where everyone joins in for a host of holiday classics! Download this one, then comeback tomorow for the 2nd annual party!

Southside Johnny - 1978-12-18- Montreal, Canada (FM)

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to Canada on December 18, 1978, 42 years ago today.  In keeping with this month's theme, the set list includes two holiday tunes, Santa Claus Is Back In Town and Merry Christmas, Baby.

In late 2000, the marquee at the Asbury Park Convention simply stated “Bruce Springsteen with the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends – A Holiday Show”. Springsteen fans, however, were in the dark as to what Bruce had planned for the event and who the friends might be. The lucky ones who got tickets for the show on December 17, 2000, 2 decades ago today, were treated to a Springsteen concert unlike any other. Traditional holiday tunes, such as a country version of Blue Christmas, were paired with long lost favorites, such as the first version of Kitty's Back since September 1978. E Street band members Max Weinberg, Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa each got to step out front on several tunes. Little Steven, one of the “friends” referenced on the marquee, delivered a stellar version of Until The Good Is Gone from his Men Without Women album. Another of Bruce’s friends, Southside Johnny, expressed the feelings of everyone in attendance when he led the band through his classic tune, I Don’t Want To Go Home. To top it off, Springsteen debuted My City Of Ruins, a song written about the city where this concert took place, but later associated with the 9-11 tragedy. Needless to say, the tune became a crowd favorite from the first chorus of “rise up!” This soundboard recording captures every note of this historic show, which is a perfect to download and enjoy this holiday season and for many more to come.

On November 23, 1979, Paul McCartney and Wings began a 19-date concert tour of the United Kingdom to promote their newest album, Back to the Egg. The band added a 20th date when they teamed up with Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Robert Plant for the last of 4 Concerts for Kampuchea on December 29, 1979. At the time, the UK shows were supposed to be the first leg of a world tour that would visit Japan, Europe and the US. All that ended, however, when McCartney was busted for marijuana possession when arriving in Japan in January 1980. So, though no one knew it at the time, those 20 concerts became the last tour by Wings. Amazingly, an incredible soundboard is available of the entire last show before the Kampuchea concert, from Glasgow, Scotland on December 17, 1979, 41 years ago today. In keeping with our theme for the month, the show features McCartney & Wings performing Wonderful Christmastime!

Written by Robbie Robertson and sung by Rick Danko, The Band's Christmas Must be Tonight is an often overlooked holiday gem. Composed in the style of scripture, the tune was Robertson's Yuletide gift to his new son Sebastian. The group didn't do the song any favors by burying it on the 1977 album Islands. a jumbled assortment of tunes thrown together to fulfill their recording contract with Capitol Records so that the Last Waltz soundtrack could be released on Warner.  In any event, this FM broadcast captures Danko out solo in the wake of the Last Waltz, performing the tune at My Father's Place on December 15, 1977, 43 years ago today.

Needless to say, after nearly 6 decades of playing live, it would appear that McCartney has seen it and done it all. Yet, when he took the stage on December 13, 2010, a decade ago today, the rock icon actually seemed in awe of his surroundings, the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem. Sir Paul called the venue the “holy grail” of concert theaters, then saying “a long time ago, in Liverpool, I dreamt of this.” McCartney’s performance at the Apollo was sponsored by Sirius Satellite Radio to celebrate that the station had reached the 20 million subscriber mark. The audience was a mixture of Sirius subscribers who won tickets to the event (no tickets were sold to the general public) and celebrities, such as Keith Richards, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Jerry Seinfeld, Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Tony Bennett, Howard Stern, Martha Stewart and Steven Van Zandt. For those lucky enough to be in attendance, the show was a rare opportunity to see Sir Paul in small intimate theater. The Apollo holds just 1475 guests, a far cry from the 60,000 plus seat stadium shows that the ex-Beatle more typically plays these days. This FM broadcast recording captures every moment of the concert, with Sir Paul in fine form, clearly inspired by the setting. In keeping with our theme, he plays Wonderful Christmas time, his original holiday tune. By the way,, accounts of the concert say that he stayed on stage for a while after the show ended, perhaps soaking in the historic moment. As he did, one person held up an Abbey Road album cover, and McCartney, making one more dream come true, signed it.
