1990s - #4: On November 29 1994, Nick Lowe released the album The Impossible Bird, which marked yet another reinvention of himself as an artist. According to reviews, the album "has a lot more to do with 1956 country music than with 1978 punk." That's hardly surprising for a man who was quoted as saying his greatest fear in recent years was "sticking with what you did when you were famous." This FM broadcast captures Lowe promoting his then new disc on the show in Philadelphia on January 28, 1995,  31 years ago today.

Today's post features 3 artists, all of whom I've seen live.  John Hiatt was the first show I attended after a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic, on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I saw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me betwen seeing an artist, behind America (38 years between 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021).  I saw Nick Lowe for the first time in July 1979 as part of Rockpile, at the same bill as Blondie at Belmont Race Track.  Then I saw Lowe for the 2nd time on April 1, 1983, backed by Paul Carrack. They led-in for Tom Petty.

This TV soundboard recording captures Hiatt, Lowe and Carrack in Hamburg on the German televison program Rockpalast on December 11, 1983, 42 years ago today.  Four years later, Lowe would help Hiatt record his breakthrough album, Bring The Family.

1990s - #3: When John Hiatt recorded his breakthrough album Bring The Family in 1987, he did it in just 4 days week with the help of Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner. In 1992, the four reunited to record an album, calling themselves Little Village. Despite the star power, their self titled album met with little commercial or critical success. As Nick Lowe later said "Little Village was really good fun. Unfortunately, the record we did was no good. I suppose on some level, it worked, but Warner Brothers kind of gave us too much time to do it", referencing how the compressed time frame for Bring The Family had forced the foursome to be at their best! In any event, Little Village went on tour in support of the album in early 1992. This soundboard recording captures them on April 12 1992, 32 years ago today, in Detroit.

I saw Rockpile just once, on July 8, 1979 at Belmont Race Track. I was 20 years old in the summer of 1979, and basically my life consisted of what girl could I date, what beer could I drink, and what concert could I get tickets to. I think I may have been most successful at the 3rd of those 3 things. In July, for example, I saw concerts on 3 straight Saturday nights, Stephen Stills on July 7, Jorma Kaukonen on July 14 and the Allman Brothers on July 21. Having dedicated Saturdays in July to classic rock, I used a Sunday to take in 2 of the "new wave" bands that were then all the rage. On Sunday, July 8, my buddies and I drove to Belmont Race Track in Long Island to catch a double bill of Blondie and Rockpile! I'll be honest, I don't remember much about the day for a variety of reasons. First, having seen Stephen Stills the night before, there were some after effects that lingered into Sunday, if you know what I mean. Second, the car ride took over 2.5 hours due to summer beach traffic, which didn't help my condition. Finally, it was hot as hell that day, which also didn't help me in overcoming the the residual effects from Saturday night. I do remember, however, the contrast in styles between the folks at Belmont for the concert and those who were there for the horse racing. On one hand, you had the 20 year old new wavers with big hair, funky glasses, neon colored, leggings, skinny ties, etc. On the other hand, you had old men, with cigars, in button down short sleeve shirts, looking like Oscar Madison from the Odd Couple. In any event, I don't really recall how well either band played that July afternoon, a real shame since I was (and still am) a huge fan of Rockpile, thanks in large part to Nick Lowe's Pure Pop For Now People disc (Jesus of Cool in the UK) and Dave Edmund's Repeat When Necessary album. I also remember, that Rockpile opened with the highly appropriate The Race is On! By the way, if you like what you just read, then you'll definitely enjoy my book! Needless to say, the contrast between the regular track crowd, many cigar smoking, Oscar Madison types, and the new wavers in attendance for the concert was quite a site to behold,  Rockpile opened their set that day with the highly appropriate The Race Is On.

This FM broadcast captures Rockpile in London, just a month before I saw them, on June 6, 1979, 44 years ago today.

Rockpile 1978 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1: For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. 1982 - In 1981, after the breakup of Rockpile, Nick Lowe recorded a solo album entitled Nick The Knife. The disc, however, has several ties to his former band. First, it includes a slowed down cover of the Rockpile tune, Heart. Second, both drummer Terry Williams and guitarist Billy Bremner from the band back Lowe on the album. So too do guitarist Martin Belmont, from The Rumour and Paul Carrack, formerly of Squeeze. When Lowe went on tour in support of the album, his backing band, Noise To Go, consisted of Carrack, Belmont, James Eller and Bobby Irwin. This spunboardrecordi g catures Lowe and compnay in Portlan on October 23, 1982, 4 decades ago today.

On one hand, you had the 20 year old new wavers with big hair, funky glasses, neon colored, leggings, skinny ties, etc.  On the other hand, you had old men, with cigars, in button down short sleeve shirts, looking like Oscar Madison from the Odd Couple. In any event, I don't really recall how well either band played that July afternoon, a real shame since I was (and still am) a huge fan of Rockpile, thanks in large part to Nick Lowe's Pure Pop For Now People disc (Jesus of Cool in the UK) and Dave Edmund's Repeat When Necessary album.  I also remember, that Rockpile opened with the highly appropriate The Race is On!  By the way, if you like what you just read, then you'll definitely enjoy my book!

For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences.
