Dick Cavett Show - 1969-08-18 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

On August 18, 1969, 55 years ago today, even as the Woodstock Festival was finishing up, a half a day or so late due to the endless technical and weather difficluties that plagued the event, Dick Cavett was taping his televsion show celebrating the gathering that was "half a million strong". Jefferson Airplane, David Crosby,  Stephen Stills, and Joni Mitchell gathered in Cavett's New York studio to discuss the event and play a little music.  Stills and Crosby came straight from Woodstock to the taping, still wearing the same mud covered clothes they perfromed in. Joni Mitchell never made it to the festival, unfortunately. Her manager, nervous she'd never get to Woodstock and then get back in time for the Cavett show, which would mean she'd miss her first national television appearance, convinced her not to go.  Incredibly, she'd later write the tune Woodstock about the event, turning her disappointment into a near perfect depiction of the festival.  Jimi Hendrix also was supposed to be on the show, but since he had to perform at Woodstock on the morning of August 18 due to the aforementioned delays, he had to cancel.  This soundboard recording captures that historic Cavett show in its entirety - the music and the conversation. Bob Dylan - Back to Back 1975 - #1: We kick off our month of back to back concerts with the first of 2 shows from Bob Dylan's legendary Rolling Thunder tour in 1975. For the former Robert Zimmerman, 1975 was one of the most incredible years in his long storied career. In January, he released Blood On The Tracks, one of his finest albums. Then in June, he released The Basement Tapes, the legendary recordings he and The Band made at Woodstock in 1967. In October, he finished the album Desire, which was released in January, 1976. As if that wasn’t enough, Dylan decided to go on the road in late 1975, launching the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. In addition to the core band he used to produce Desire, Dylan recruited a host of other musicians to join him on this tour. Among those featured in the Revue were Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Mick Ronson, Kinky Friedman, T Bone Burnett, and Bob Neuwirth. At times, other major performers would drop in, such as when Joni Mitchell joined the last 3 nights of the tour. Patti Smith was invited to be part of the Revue, but politely declined. According to Larry Sloman, who documented the tour, "onstage it was like a carnival. After intermission, the curtain rose to an incredible sight, Bob and Joan, together again after all these years. The finale, Woody Guthrie’s 'This Land Is Your Land,' featured everyone on stage from the poet Allen Ginsberg to Bob's mother Beattie one night.” The tour met with tremendous critical acclaim. For example, Clinton Heylin Wrote "The Rolling Thunder Revue shows remain some of the finest music Dylan ever made with a live band." Duos #4: In 1970, James Taylor and Joni Mitchell had more in common than simply being the leaders of a new generation of folk rockers. They were also romantically linked, and Taylor’s manager, taught it would be the perfect career move for the duo to perform together in concert. On October 29, 1970, 44 years ago today, they took the stage at the Royal Albert Hall. While the romantic pairing wouldn’t last, Mitchell did wind up writing 2 songs about JT - See You Sometime and Just Like This Train - while Taylor wrote You Can Close Your Eyes about Joni.
