Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. No month celebrating the 1960s & 1970s would be complete without a post featuring the music of Motown. Berry Gordy’s Motown record label, with its aptly named Hitsville USA studio, spawned some of the most successful and important bands of the 1960s. From 1961 to 1971, Motown artists generated 110 top 10 hits. Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Marvelettes, and Smoke Robinson & The Miracles, just to name a few, all released records for Motown. Moreover, in the racially tense times of the 1960s, the Motown sound resonated with blacks and whites alike. This FM broadcast captures The Temptations in the home pf Motow, Detriot, on October 3, 1966, 52 years ago this very day!

Believe it or not, Hall & Oates took the stage with the Grateful Dead on September 24, 1988 at a Rain Forest Benefit Show at Madison Square Garden in New York.. The duo played Every Time You Go Away & What's Going On with The Dead backing them. To celebrate that unlikely collaboration, we again visit Live Aid, on July 13, 1985, 30 years ago this very day, bringing you this FM Broadcast that captures Hall & Oates performance at that legendary event, with special guests David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations.

A month celebrating American bands wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to Motown and the city of Detroit. This FM broadcast captures a host of Motown artists on tour in the UK on April 5, 1992, 22 years ago today. While no longer in their prime, these artists still conveyed the distinctive sound that took the music world by storm some 3 decades prior.
