Bob Dylan & Tom Petty - 1986-07-31 - Tacoma WA (SBD) 

1980s - #7: Believe it or not, the 1986 Dylan/Petty tour was an outgrowth of two major concert events – Live Aid and Farm Aid. At the end of his set at Live Aid, Dylan said "I hope that some of the money…maybe they can just take a little bit of it, maybe…one or two million, maybe…and use it, say, to pay the mortgages on some of the farms and, the farmers here, owe to the banks…". While that comment angered Live Aid organizer Bob Geldorf, it did help spark the effort to organize Farm Aid. The first Farm Aid show was held just 2 months after Live Aid, on September 22, 1985. Both Dylan and Petty played at that show and struck up a mutual friendship. That led to Dylan inviting Petty and the Heartbreakers to serve as his back up band for his 1986/1987 True Confessions tour. The Dylan/Petty collaboration would later continue in the Traveling Wilburys. This soundboard, from July 31, 1986, 28 years ago today, captures Dylan and Petty  in Tacoma, on July 31, 1986, 28 years ago today, very near the tour’s end on August 6.

The Byrds - 1971-07-30 - Montreal, Canada (SBD)

1970s - #7: On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. The line-up for the album, original member Roger McGuinn alongside Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, would turn out to have the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. They had also begun to build a reputation for stellar live performances. This soundboard recording captures The Byrds aout 10 months after the release of Untitled, in Montreal on July 30, 1971, 52 years ago today.  Note - a thanks to the Rockying-Byrds blog for the artwork and audio.

The Eagles - 1980-07-29 - Santa Monica, CA (Ex Aud)

1980s - #6: This excellent audience recording from legendary taper Mike Millard captures The Eagles in Santa Monica on July 29, 1980, 43 years ago today, on tour in support of the last #1 album of the 1970's. The band spent over 2 years recording the follow up to their masterpiece Hotel California, and the result was another massive commercial success. When the band released The Long Run in September 1979, it debuted at #2 on the Billboard Albums chart. A few weeks later, the disc climbed to the top spot, dethroning Led Zeppelin's In Through the Out Door. The Long Run reigned for eight weeks in the #1 slot, finishing the decade in that position. The album has sold more than 8 million copies to date in the US alone. It also yielded three Top 10 singles; with the title track and I Can't Tell You both reaching #8, while the tune Heartache Tonight climbed all the way to #1. Download this one to hear The Eagles play tunes from the last album they would record for over 14 years, as later in this tour the band would breakup, not to reunite until "Hell Freezes Over".

1990s - #7: On May 3, 1994, the Allman Brothers released Where it All begins, their 11th studio album and 3rd since te band reformed in 1990. The new disc included the single No One To Run With, which went to #7 on the Billboard mainstream rock charts. The album also featured Soulshine, written by Warren Haynes, which became one of Warren's signature live tunes, whether playing with the Allmans, Govt Mule or solo. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of the disc, on July 29, 1994, 29 years ago tiday, in Phoenix.

1960s - #7: Beatlemania was running wild when the Fab Four flew into Stockholm on July 28. 1964, 59 years ago today, as over 3000 fans crowded the airport to greet them as they landed. The band was scheduled to play 4 shows in 2 days, at 6:45 and 10 pm each day.  Also on the bill were The Kays, The Moonlighters, The Streaplers, Jimmy Justice, The Mascots and The Shanes. This FM broadcast captures one of the 2 shows on July 28, though which one has never been pinned down, with some sources even claiming its from July 29.  Whatever the actual date, its the Beatles live in 1964, what more do you need?!?!

Rolling Stones - 1966-07-28 - Honolulu, Hawaii (SBD) 

1960s - #6: In April 1966, the Rolling Stones released teh album Aftermath, their frst disc composed entirely of  original compositions written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.  The album went to #2 on the US Billboard charts and spawned the #1 single, Paint It Black. Interestingly, the UK version of the disc included Mother's Little Helper in place of Paint It Black. The Stones launched a US Tour on June 24 in support of Aftermath. This soundboard recording captures the band in Hawaii on the last night of the tour, on July 28, 1966, 57 years ago this very day!

Summer Jam - 1973-07-28 - Watkins Glen, NY (SBD + AUD)

1970s - #6: No concert event in the US has ever drawn more fans than the 600,000 or so that turned out on July 28, 1973, a half century ago today ago this very day, for The Summer Jam at the Watkins Glen Race Course. They arrived to see 3 of the great North American rock bands of all time – The Band, The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead. Despite the heat, rain, mud and general difficult conditions, the enormous crowd was not disappointed as the 3 bands played incredible sets. The Grateful Dead performed first, playing two long sets that lasted almost 4 hours. The Band followed the Dead with one two-hour set, however, their performance was cut in half by a drenching thunderstorm, in a scene again reminiscent of Woodstock. During the storm, keyboardist Garth Hudson played his signature organ improvisation ,The Genetic Method. When the rain finally let up, the full Band joined Hudson on stage, and segued into Chest Fever. Then, the Allman Brothers Band performed for three hours, playing almost all of their classics. Following the Allmans' second set, members of all 3 groups joined on stage for an hour encore jam. The encore featured spirited renditions of Not Fade Away, Mountain Jam, and Johnny B. Goode. 2010s - #7:  In May 2015, U2 launched their Innocence & Experience Tour, in support of their 2014 album Songs Of Innocence,  The tour would be comprised of 2 legs, the first comprised of 36 shows in North America and the second consisting of 40 shows in Europe.  The band would play for over 1.2 million concert goers, and gross over 150 million during the tour.  This IEM MAtrix recording captures U@ during the North American leg of the tour, in New York, on July 27, 2015, 8 years ago today.

2010s - #6: In the summer of 2010, Gregg Allman was recovering from a liver transplant that was required after doctors found cancer had spread throughout that organ. A year later, he was back on stage, at one of the Allman Brother’s favorite venues, The Beacon Theater in New York, for a special charity show to raise money to combat hepatitis C, the very disease which had caused his cancer. The Allmans were joined on stage that night by special guests, Natalie Cole, David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Phil Lesh. Janis Joplin - 1968-07-27 - Newport, RI (SBD)

1960s - #5:  While Janis Joplin's performance at Monterey Pop, is the stuff of legends, most of the country didn't get to see it until D. A. Pennebaker's film documenting the festival was released in 1969. Joplin's first national exposure, therefore, came on July 31, 1968, when she was a guest on Dick Cavet's television show.  Just a few week's after that appearance, Joplin released teh album Cheap Thrills, which went to #1 on the Billbioard charts, a posotion it held for 8 non ocnsecutive weeks. Just  feew days before her natioan TV debut and top selling album rlease, Janis appeared at the Newport Folk Festival on July 27, 1968, 55 years ago today, as captured in this sounboard recording.  her set list included many of the tunes that helped Chaeap Thrills clinb to the top spot on the charts, including Piece of My Heart, Summertime and Ball & Chain.

1990s - #6: When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, Hot Tuna. former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, and Los Lobos, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Los Lobo's set at the Further Festival on July 26, 1996, 27 years ago today.

1990s - #5: When your debut album goes to #3 on the Billboard charts, and wins 3 Grammys, as Tuesday Night Music Club did, you've established quite a standard for future releases. For Sheryl Crow, however, that hardly seemed to be an issue. In 1996, her self-titled second disc went to # 6 on the charts, earned her 2 more Grammys, and included such hits as Everyday Is A Winding Road, If It Makes You Happy and Hard To Make A Stand. The album also received significant critical acclaim. For example, the Village Voice ranked it at #26 in its list of the best albums of 1996. Rolling Stone selected it as one of the essential albums of the 1990s while also naming it the 44th greatest album of all time by a female artist. 1960s - #4: The Newport Folk Festival was founded in 1959 by George Wein, who was also the founder of the already-well-established Newport Jazz Festival. The festival introduced to a national audience a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez by her appearance as an unannounced guest of Bob Gibson in 1959, and Bob Dylan, in turn a guest of Baez at the 1963 festival. Newport is also legendary as being the site where Dylan plugged in and went electric in 1965. The festival was not strictly limited to folk performers. For example, in the early 1960s legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Johnny Cash all performed at Newport. This soundboard recording features Johnny Cash’s set on July 25, 1964, 59 years ago today. Folk legend Pete Seeger introduced Cash, who included a version of Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice in his set. After the show, Cash gave Dylan his guitar, a country western tradition for showing admiration of another act. 2020s - #7:  In September 2018, Elton John lauched his final tour, aptly names Farewell Yellow Brick Road, a play on title of his #1 album and single from 1973. I saw Elton early on in that tour, in November 2018 at Madison Square Garden.  Due to the pandemic, the tour stretched over 5 years, encompassing more than 300 shows across 3 continents, before coming to an end on July 8, 2023 in Sweden. This excellent/very good (depending on the song) audience recordimg captures Elton's final show in the New York Metro area, on July 24, 2022, a year ago today, at Met Life Stadium. New York has been a 2nd home to Elton over the years, as evidenced by the fatc he played his 60th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden which also happened to be his 60th show at that venue.   For this concert in East Rutherford, Elton made a change to the standard set list, dropping the tune Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word.  In its place Elton Sang, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, a tune about New York, annoucing it would be the last time he ever performed the song live.

2000s - #5: While Phil Lesh took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who of rock & roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastasio, Joan Osborne, Stanley Jordan, Steve Kimock and Derek Trucks, just to name a few. Bruce Springsteen - 1988-07-19 - East Berlin, Germany (FM)

1980s - #5: When I went to see Bruce Springsteen at Madison Square Garden on March 19, 1988, I was expecting another of his high energy, full tilt boogie, rock & roll celebrations. Instead, I got darkness and pain. Perhaps the "This is a dark ride" sign that appeared on the stage as the band entered should have been a tip off. From the tone of lost love in many of the songs from the Tunnel of Love disc, to an angry version of Born In the USA, to an acoustic, stripped bare version of Born To Run, this was a different Bruce Springsteen. With the benefit of hindsight, it's now easy to see why. We know now that Tunnel of Love was about the disintegration of his marriage to Julianne Phillips. We know as well that Bruce was going through other dramatic personal changes at the time, which would lead, in the next 12 months, to dissolving the E Street Band (fortunately only temporarily) and moving from his NJ roots to LA with new love and future wife, Patti Scialfa. It was a time where one chapter was ending and a new one beginning. This FM Broadcast captures Springsteen dueing that Tunnel Of Love tour, in Germany on July 19, 1988, 35 years ago today.
