Grateful Dead - 1988-12-31 - Oakland, CA (FM)

1988 - In 1987, the Grateful Dead rode a new wave of popularity, spurred by the success of the In The Dark album in 1987 and the Touch Of Gray video, which thanks to extensive airplay on MTv brought the band a whole new generation of fans. As a result, in 1988, the band did something that no artist previously had done, namely sell out 9 nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden. I went to the first 8 of those September shows, only missing the September 24 Rain Forest benefit in order to attend a good friend’s 30th birthday bash. The band was not yet playing at the level that would mark the next 3 years, but if you listened closely, you could hear it coming, The fall/wintwr 1988 shows all hint at the classics concerts that would emerge in 1989, 1990 and 1991. which we’ve discussed numerous times on this blog. This FM broadcast cpatures the Dead on their home turf in Oakland, closing out the year with some help from Clarence Clemons, on December 31, 1988, 34 years ago today.

1978 - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers first 2 albums, 1976’s self titled debut disc and 1978’s You’re Gonna Get It, both certified gold and received strong critical acclaim. Songs from those 2 discs, such as Breakdown, American Girl, Listen To Her Heart and I Need To Know, became staples on FM rock stations. This FM broadcast captures Petty during that period in his career, in Santa Monica, on December 31, 1978, 44 years.

Santana - 1976-12-31 - Daly City, CA (SBD)

1976 - On December 31, 1976, having just returned home from A European tour, Santana closed out the year with a concert at the Cow Palace, just outside of San Francisco. as captured in this FM broadcast. Santana served as the lead-in for the Garteful Dead, whose set that night has been offficially released/. Santana used the New Year's Eve performance to showcase songs from their recently released album Amigos, as well as from their soon to be released disc, Festival. While neither album featured any Billboard chart hits, both went gold and featured inspired playing by Carlos. Of note, after these 2 albums, Santatan would take a dramtic shifttoward a more AOR sound, strating with the album Inner Secrets in 1978.

Southside Johnny - 1988-12-30 - Asbury Park, NJ (FM)

1988 - The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. While Southside never rose to the prominence that Springsteen achieved, the band remained a vibrant live force, touring almost non stop! This FM broadcast cpatures Southside returining to Asbury Park on the Jersey Shore, on December 30, 1988, 34 years ago today, Of note, the show was recorded for broadcast the next night, to givethe local radio station an even to ring in the bew year!
