Bruce Hornsby - 1995-08-31 - Devon PA (SBD) 

On July 18, 1995, Bruce Hornsby released Hot House, his 2nd solo album and 5th overall including his 3 with the Range. The disc expanded om some of the jazz influences found on his previous, album Harbor Lights. Hot House also featured some pf the same guest msuscians as Harbor Lights, including Pat Matheny, Jimmy Haslip, Bela Fleck and Jerry Garcia. In fact, Cruise Control became the last Hornsby song on which Garcia played guitar. Hornsby went on tour that summer in support of the disc, but the run of shows soon became a memorial to his dear departed friend, who passed away on August  This soundbaord recording from August 31, 1995 28 years ago today is filled with Garcia's legacy. The show includes Terrpain Station > I Know You Rider, a combo Hornsby would play at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fqame show a few days later in honor of Jerry. Later in the set, Bruce plays Across The River, a another song that featured a Garcia guitar solo, into the Dead classic Scarlet Begonia.  Two more tributes pop up near the end of the show. Hornsby plays the Dead's Brokedown Palace with its fefrain of "fare thee well, fare thee well, I love you more than words can tell", serving as a mucial goodbye to the late, great guitarist. Finally, the night ends with the aforementioned Cruise Control, the final Hornsby/Garcia collaboration. It has been a long 28 years - I and the whole Grateful Dead community still miss the one and only Jerry Garcia.

Gregg Allman & Warren Haynes -  1992-08-31 - New York, NY (SBD)

On August 30, 199, the Allman Brothers Band played a concert at the Meadownlands Summerfest in East Rutherofrd,NJ>  Summerfest was a series of shows that took place i the parking lot of Giants Staium.  Promoter John Scher set up a satge and some paortable stands, and prononced it a concert venue.  I saw Bob Weir there  about a month earlier, on July 24.  In any event, after th\e show, in the wee hours of the morning on August 31, 1992, 31 years ago today, Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes made their way to a clun in New York called The Wetlands.  The two played not one but two full sets, as captured in this soundboard recording.

The year 2015 was a momentous one for Phil Lesh. In late June/early July, he reunited with former Grateful Dead band mates Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti, 2 shows in Santa Clara and 3 in Chicago. Dubbed the Fare Thee Well concerts, the shows were a celebration of the the band's 50th anniversary as well as the last time those 4 original Dead members intended to share the stage together. In addition, his band. Phil & Friends played a series of shows dedicated to each year in the Grateful Dead's long, storied history. This soundboard recording captures Lesh in San Rafael on August 30, 2015, 8 years ago today, recreating the Grateful Dead's concert from  September 12, 1981 at The Greek Theater, Berkeley, CA.

From December 1970 to June 1975, Jerry Garcia, when not playing with the Grateful Dead, often found himself collaborating with keyboardist Merle Saunders. In fact, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, The duo even released a live album together, entitled Live At Keystone featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. This soundboard recording finds the Jerry and Merl a little over a year later, in Davis, on August 30, 1974, 49 years ago today.

We wanted to bring you some Jerry Garcia from the 1980s, and could think of no bettter year than 1987. As we mentioned in our Grateful Dead post from a few days ago, 1987 was a year of rebirth for Jerry. Having recovered from a diabetic coma that almost took his life, Garcia had to relearn how to play guitar. His experience seemed to give him a new appreciation for life and music, as his performances in 1987 showed a new energy, determination and creativity. Jerry even took a renewed interest in playing acoustic guitar, something he had done only on rare occasions since the historic 1980 Grateful Dead performances at The Warfield in San Francisco, The Saenger in New Orleans and Radio City in New York. In fact, 3 dozen years ago today, on August 29, 1987, he introduced the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band at a concert at French’s Camp at Eel River, a gorgeous site in Humboldt County, in Northern California. The site must have further inspired Garcia, as in addition to an acoustic set, he came back and played 2 extraordinary electric sets. Garcia himself must have enjoyed the acoustic & electric combination, because he would revisit that arrangement in October 1987 when he played at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York. Los Lobos - 1999-08-28 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time,  This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that disc, in San Francisco on August 28, 1999, 21 dozen years ago today.

Los Lobos is another band with ties to all 3 of the groups we are featuring this month. After their breakthrough in 1987, Los Lobos served as the lead in band for the Grateful Dead for several shows in 1988 and 1989. They also appeared on the 1991 album Deadicated, performing a cover of Bertha. That tune, as well as West LA Fade Away and Not Fade Away (not a Dead original but a song the band made of centerpiece of their live show) became staples of Los Lobo’s concert set lists. Jerry Garcia was a huge fan of Los Lobos - in fact, a tape circulates of Jerry and Bob Weir playing with them in the parking lot before a show on July 2, 1989 in Foxboro.  After Garcia's passing, Los Lobos participated in the 1996 Furthur Festival. Los Lobos have played covers of the Allman Brothers' Don't Keep Me Wondering and One Way Out in concert. They have also sat it with The Teeschi Trucks Band on occasion, usually to play Allman Brothers tunes.   Levon Helm of the band was a guest artist on Los Lobos' 1990 album The Neighborhood.  A year later, when the band visited Woodstock for the first time, it was Helm who greeted them upon their arrival. In addition, Los Lobos played the last Midnight Ramble concert at Helm's studio in Woodstock in 2012, just a few weeks before the legendary singer and drummer passed away.

Black Crowes - 1996-08-27 - Bottom Line, NY, NY (SBD)

In 1996 VH1 launched Storytellers, a program in which artists performed in front of a small audience, and recounted stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The show had its hey day between its debut and 2002, when 67 of its 98 episodes aired. This soundboard recording captures The Balc Croes on the shows's earliest episode, in New York on Augsut 27, 1996, 27 years ago today!

The Black Crowes have ties to all 3 of our featured bands this month. Former Allman Brothers's Band keyboardist Chick Leavell played on the Black Crowes debut album. On April 6, 1995, the Black Crowes were joined in studio by members of the Allman Brothers for a jam session. The Allman Brothers and Black Crowes both played at the One For Woody Concert on September 15, 2000, in honor of Allen Woody, who had passed away a month earlier. A night after the jam session just referenced, the Black Crowes opened for the Grateful Dead in Tampa.  The Crowes were part of the 1997 Furthur Festival, which featured a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, Hot Tuna, and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, The Crowes first hit, Hard To Handle, was one of the signature tunes of Ron "Pigpen" McKernan of the Grateful Dead .  Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes had a stint with Phil Lesh & Friends  In 2009, the Crowes played 4 nights at Levon Helm's Studios, shows that produced the live album, Before the Frost...Until the Freeze.  That same year, Levon Helm joined the Black Crowes on stage in Atlantic City for a rendition of The Weight.

The Band - 1994-08-26 -Asbury Park NJ (FM) 

For a group that had played their supposedly "Last Waltz" in 1976, 1994 proved to be quite a magical year for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from their 1993 album Jericho into their set list. Among the songs from that disc was a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. They alos helped legendary FM station WNEW-FM cdelebrate the stations 20th anniversary, as captured in this FM brosdcast from the Stone Pony on August 26, 1994, 29 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1971-08-26 - New York, NY (SBD)

We couldn't have a month featuring the Allman Brotehrs without at least 1 post with Duane Allman at the helm.  As 1971 began, the Allman Brothers Band was riding a wave of critical success. Their 2nd album, Idlewild South, released in late 1970, had received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The band’s best work, however, was still to come. The Allmans played 2 shows at the Fillmore East on March 12 and 13, which would be recorded and then released as a live album in July of that year. The resulting 2 disc set, simply entitled At Fillmore East, is often called the finest live album ever produced. Rolling Stone ranked it 49th on its list of the greatest albums in rock history. That album sealed the Allman’s reputation as one of rock’s most innovative, exciting and powerful live acts. While the Fillmore shows get the attention thanks to the historic album that documented them, the truth is that on almost every night in 1971, The Allmans, with Duane leading the way, were on fire. This soundboard recording captures the band at A&R studios in NY on August 28, 1971, 52 years ago today, just 5 months after the band's historic Fillmore East shows.  Pay particular attention to the The You Don't Love Me and Soul Serenade combination near the end of the set.  The band effortlessly moves in and out between the two songs, demonstrating the magic that was the early Allman Brothers.  Unfortunately, Duane would die in a motorcycle crash just 3 months later.  Fortunately, you can download this show and keep the spirit alive.

Neil Young - 1996-08-25 - Saratoga Springs NY (SBD)

On June 20, 1996, Neil Young launched a European tour with Crazy Horse, his first series of live shows with his long time backing band in about 5 years. In between tours with the The Horse, Neil had played live with both Pearl Jam and Booker T and The MGs. He also headlined several solo acoustic tours. The passage of time, however, did nothing to lessen the intensity of a Neil and Crazy Horse concert, as evidenced in this soundboard from Saratoga on Augst 28, 1996, 27 years ago today.

Believe it or not, the links between Neil and The Grateful Dead go all the way back to 1963. Neil was with John Phillips (of the Mama’s and Papa’s) when John wrote Me & MY Uncle, a tune that later became a staple of The Dead’s live shows. Neil should have been on stage on the last night at Monterrey Pop, right before The Who and The Dead, but he was feuding with the other members of Buffalo Springfield at the time and skipped the festival. He and The Dead were both at Woodstock, as CSNY played just their 2nd concert ever. Neil also appeared at The SNACK benefit in March 1975, one of just 4 concerts the Dead played that year, playing alongside Bob Dylan and The Band, 2 other groups with long time ties to the Grateful Dead. In November 1991, Neil sat in with the Dead at the Bill Graham Memorial concert, playing Dylan’s Forever Young in memory of the late, great promoter. 

Fellow Canadian Neil Young was also a guest at The Band's 1976 Last Waltz concert, playing Helpless with supporting vocals by Joni Mitchell. According to legend, Neil was snorting cocaine backatge before he went on, and rocks of coke coukd be seen in his notrils on some of the filn of hi performance.  As mentioned above, Nei sat in with The Band and Dylan a year prior to The Last Waltz, at the Snack Benefit Concert.  And while Neil and The Allman Brothers really don't have any musical ties, they both were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in the same year!

Bob Dylan - 1997-08-24 - Vienna VA (SBD)

In May 1997, while on tour in the US, Bob Dylan was forced to cancel numerous dates after being hospitalized for a potentially fatal chest infection, called histoplasmosis. Since Dylan had embarked on what is called the Never Ending Tour in 1988, his 1997 hospital stay was been his longest break from playing live. Dylan recovered, and continued to tour the US throughout August. This soundboard recording captures Dylan in Vienna VA, on August 24, 1997, 26 years ago today!

While Bob Dylan doesn't have many connections to the Allman Brothers, his links to The Band and the Grateful Dead more than make up for it. The Band, before they took that name, were The Hawks, and they served as Dylan’s back up band for his 1966 world tour, his first since he went electric at the 1965 Newport Jazz Festival. The famed 1975 Basement Tapes album captures Dylan and The Band recording together in Woodstock (yes - that Woodstock) NY while Dylan was recovering from a motorcycle accident. When Dylan returned to touring in 1974, he was backed by The Band for what was, at the time, the most sought after concert ticket in rock history. The live album Before The Flood captures highlights of that tour. Dylan was the final performer introduced at The Band’s Last Waltz in November 1976. The re-united Band, sans Robbie Robertson who choose not to rejoin his former band mates, and Richard Manuel, who died in 1986, played a cover of When I Paint My Masterpiece at the Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert.  I'm certain with some additional research, dozens more links could be mfoumd.

The Dylan The the Dead links are almost as numerous. In 1987, Dylan and The Dead played 6 shows together, where the Dead opened with their material, then served as Dylan’s backing band for a closing set. In both 1986 and 1995, Dylan served as the lead-in band for several Dead concerts. He also made several guest appearances at their shows, most notably a February 12 1989 show in Los Angeles and a October 17, 1994 performance in New York.  Robert Hunter, Garcia's song writing partner, co-wrote 2 songs on Dylan’s 1988 album, Down in The Groove. The Grateful Dead, as well as Jerry Garcia in his solo shows, made covers of Dylan tunes such as Maggie’s Farm, All Along The Watchtower, Stuck Inside of Mobile, Tangled Up In Blue, Quinn The Eskimo, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) and When I Paint My Masterpiece, just to name a few, staples of their live sets.  In 2005, Rhino Records released a compilation disc entitled Garcia plays Dylan, featuring Jerry playing live versions of 18 different Dylan tunes either as a member of the Grateful Dead or at a solo show,  It was a companion to an album entitled Postcards From The Hanging, released 3 years earlier, that featured 13 Dylan tunes as covered by the Grateful Dead, some with Bob Weir or Phil Lesh on vocals. Fittingly, when Bob Weir played a concert the same night his brother in music, Garcia, passed away, the song he chose to close the night was Dylan’s Knockin on Heaven’s Door.

This soundboard recording captures Santana on August 23, 1987, 29 years ago today, in Angels Camp, CA. A mentioned earlier, Carlos was leading in for the Grateful Dead, and joined the Dead on stage for several songs during their performance. 

This post is perfect for our theme this month as Carlos hs connections to all 3 bands, though none as deep as those to the Grateful Dead. The links between Santana and the Grateful Dead go back to the 1960s, when both bands emerged from the San Francisco music scene. In fact, some sources claim that Garcia helped mentor Carlos at the beginning of his career. The 2 bands would often share the bill together, such as at a New Year’s Eve 1968 show at Winterland or a jam session along with the Jefferson Airplane in February 1970 at the Family Dog. Both bands, of course, appeared at Woodstock in 1969.  Bill Graham would play a major role in promoting shows by both Santana and The Grateful Dead throughout both bands’ long storied careers. It's no surprise then that both Santana and The Dead played at the concert in Graham’s honor in September 1991 after the fabled promoters tragic death.

Santana also has links to the Allmans and the Bamd.  Bill Grham manged both Santana and The Allmans, and as a result, both played the October 31, 1986 Crackdown on Crack concert at Madison Square Garden. The 2 bands co-headlined a tour in Summer of 2012 while Gregg Allman and Santana both played at the 2015 Peach Music festival. Santana and The Band, of course, both played at Woodtsock in 1969, along with the Grateful Dead.  In addition, Santana, The Band and The Dead all played the SNACK concert, promoted of course by Bill Grham, in March 1975.

Grateful Dead - 1987-08-22 - Angels Camp, CA (SBD) 

As long time readers of this blog know, I’ve written extensively about how in 1987 Jerry Garcia returned to the stage from a diabetic coma that almost cost him his life. That year was also a time when the Dead achieved a new level of popularity, as the MTV generation, captivated by the innovative video for Touch Of Grey, climbed on the bus. In addition, the summer of 1987 featured 6 historic shows where the Dead served as Dylan’s back-up band. Moreover, on September 18, 1987 at Madison Square Garden, I attended my favorite Grateful Dead concert, a show which has also been recognized as one of the best of the 1980s. The mood at all of the 1987 concerts was incredibly festive, as Dead Heads rejoiced that the band’s spiritual leader was still “truckin’ on”. This soundboard recording captures The Dead on August 22, 1987, 3 dozen years ago today, on stage in Angel’s Camp, CA, getting some help from long time friend, Carlos Santana!  We'll post the complete next night frm Angel's Camp tomorrow, including the Dead's performance as well as Santana's opening set.

Hot Tuna - 1987-08-21 - Oyster Bay, NY (SBD) 

Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady first worked together way back in 1965, as members of the Jefferson Airplane. In 1969, while still with the Airplane, they launched a side project called Hot Tuna, an acoustic duo that focused on their blues roots. In 1972, after the Airplane dissolved, Hot Tuna went electric, featuring long instrumental jams in concert. While I'm not a big fan of their electric music, I do find something unique and compelling about acoustic Hot Tuna. This one's a soundboard recording of Jorma and Jack from Osyster Bay from August 21, 1987, 36 years ago today.

Given Hot Tuna's roots in the Jefferson Airplane, it's hardly surprising Jorma and Jack have countless connection sto the Grateful Dead, Both the Airplane and The Dead emerged from the San Francisco scene in 1965 and would be leading lights of psychedelic rock. The 2 bands would headline the Human Be-in on January 14, 1967 in Golden Gate Park, a concert which put San Francisco’s counter culture on the map and served as a prelude to the Summer Of Love. Also in 1967, as the Grateful Dead were working on their debut album, Jerry Garcia also spent time helping the Airplane produce their landmark 2nd album, Surrealistic Pillow. Garcia in fact, was the source of the album’s title, when he mentioned that, as a whole, the album sounded "as surrealistic as a pillow is soft." Although RCA, the Airplane’s record company would not acknowledge Garcia's considerable contributions to the album with a "Producer" credit, he is listed as "spiritual advisor."The Airplane and Dead also performed at Monterrey Pop in June 1967, and at Woodstock in August 1969. In fact, the 2 bands shared the same bill quite frequently, with Deadbase listing 50 such concerts from 1965 to 1970. Who knows how many more undocumented pairings also took place?  While the 2 bands would go their separate ways in the 1970s, the connection between memnbers of the Dead and Jack and Jorma was never lost. Hot Tuna playerd at both the 1996 and 1998 Furthur Festivals, while Jorma was part of the Festival's 1997 roster.  Jorma also had a stint as the lead guitarist for Phil Lesh and Friends.

Jorma and Jack also have some connections to The Band and The Allman Brothers., Both the Jefferson Airplane and The Band appeared at the original woodstock in 1969. Jorma recorded 2 albums at Levon Helm's studio - his solo  disc River of Time in 2009, and Hot Tuna's Steady As She Goes in 2011, the duo's first studio record in 2 decades. The Allman Brothers recorded their own version of the Jefferson Airplane tune, She Has Funny Cars. In 1999, Hot Tuna led in for the Allman Brothes during their summer tour.

Govt Mule - 1996-08-20 - Vail, CO (SBD)

In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures Gov'T Mule on tour in support of that first disc, in Vail on August 20, 1996, 27 years ago today.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1992-08-19 - Tulsa, OK (SBD)

This soundboard recording captures CSN in Tulsa on August 19 1992, 32 years ago today.  CSN (and sometimes partner Neil Young, who will get to tomorrow) have numerous connections to all 3 bands we are featuring this month. In 1970, when CSNY went into the studio to record the album Déjà vu,  Graham Nash asked Jerry Garcia to play pedal steel guitar on the now iconic tune, Teach Your Children.  After one take, Nash told Garcia, "Thanks Jerry, you’re done." Despite Garcia's protests, Nash held firm, recalling that "The first one was exactly what I wanted.’ And of course, his pedal steel was one of the defining elements in that recording." In return for Garcia's help, CSN helped the Dead work on their harmonies for their upcoming albums Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. David Crosby sat in on several occasions with the Dead, including 8/19/1970. 9/10/1972 and 12/31/1972. His most famous appearances with The Dead, however, are from December 1971, when he, Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart played a series of rehearsals and shows at The Matrix in San Francisco, billed as David & Dorks. Stephen Stills joined The Dead on stage twice in 1969, on October 25 and December 12, and twice in 1983, on April 16 and 17. Both the Dead and CSN had long associations with Bill Graham, and performed at his memorial concert, as did Neil Young on November 3, 1991.

In addition to the connections with the Dead, CSN have many links to the Allmans and The Band. Both CSN & The Allmans played ta the Crackdown on Crack concert at Madison Square Garden on October 31, 1986. Crosby & Nash sat in with the Allman Brothers at a July 27, 2011 concert at the Beacon Theater to raise funds to fight Hepatitis C. Stepehn Stills recorded a cover of Midnight Rider for his 1973 album Thoroughfare Gap.  Both The Band and CSNY performed at Woodtsock in 1969, as of course, did the Grateful Dead.  In 2014, Nash wrote the tune Back Home, which was a tribute to The Band's Leveon Helm, who was dying of cance.

Gregg Allman - 1982-08-18 - New Orleans, LA (SBD)

In 1982, the Allman Brothers broke up, unable to operate as band anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Dickie Betts explained that "we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Greg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music. He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose." In 1987, somehow, Allman again found that purpose, recording a solo album for Epic Records appropriately entitled I'm No Angel. The title track became a top 40 hit, and Allman went on tour in support of the disc. The success of the album brought new attention to the Allman Brothers, which was further reinforced 2 years later by the release of the box set Dreams, celebrating the band's 20th anniversary. As the 1980s closed, the Allman Brothers would reform, and stay together for another quarter century!  This soundbaord recording, hoever, captures Gregg right at the time of the break up, before the redemptoive arc, in New Orleans, on August 18, 1982, 41 years ago today,

The Band - 1969-08-17 - Bethel, NY (SBD)

The Band took the stage at Woodstock about 24 hours after The Grateful Dead did, at 10 pm on August 17, 1969, 54 years ago today.  the results were far differet, however, as Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Gath Hudson, and Rochard Maneul turned in an impressive 11 song set. as captured in this soundboard recording.  As robbie Robertson decribed it to Rolling Stone in 1989. “We played a slow, haunting set of mountain music. We lived up there, near Woodstock, and it seemed kind of appropriate from our point of view. We did songs like ‘Long Black Veil’ and ‘The Weight,’ and everything had a bit of reverence to it. Even the faster songs sounded almost religious.”
