I've only seen Jorma once, on July 14, 1979 in Asbury Park NJ. While my buddies and I we really enjoyed the acoustic set, we actually left halfway through the electric set, as the band seemed to be jamming endlessly, with little direction or purpose. That may have reflected the fact that Jorma himself was a bit directionless at the time, even experimenting with some punk music, which was far removed from his musical roots.  By the way that's just one of only two time I ever left a concert early.  The other was a Billy Joel show in February 2006, but that has nothing to do with the music.  In gact the show was fantastic, but the forecast that night was for 20 inches of snow and we had an hour ride home by car from Madison Square Garden. So we left before the encore, and just managed to make it home before the worst of the snow hit, though it did take a 1/2 hour to make the last 10 minutes of the drive!

This webcast recording captures Jorma at his ranch in Pomeroy, Ohio on August 29, 2020, 7 years ago today. Jorma, like many other artists, kept in touch with is fans during the COVID quarantine period in 2020-2021 by playing live shows and broadcasting them on the web.

2020s - #2: On March 10, 2020, 6 years ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, Jaimoe reunited with a host of other former Allman Brothers Band members to crelebrate the band's 50th anniversary with a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. Guitarists Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, bassist Oteil Burbridge, percussionist Marc Quinones, and keyboardist Chuck Leavell joined Jaimoe for the celebration. So did Reese Wynans, who while never a member of the band, was a part of the initial 1969 jam session that led to the Allman Brother’s formation. It was a joyous night, a celebration of incredible music and legends lost, and the last concert at Madison Sqaure Garden for over a year due to the impact of the COVID pandemic.

John Kadlecik 2020 - Back To Back - #1: In 1997, John Kadlecik co-founded Dark Star Orchestra, which was originally intended to be a one night a week Dead cover band. Before long all the group members quit their other projects and began concentrating on the group full-time. The band would often recreate set lists from a particular night in Grateful Dead history. Kadlecik had an uncanny ability to emulate Jerry Garcia's playing and singing style.  So much so, that in 2009, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, original members of the Grateful Dead, asked him to join Furthur, one of the many projects that the former members of the Dead embarked on after the death of Jerry Garcia. He would also later play as part of Phil Lesh & Friends. This soundboard recording captures John 6 years after his stint with Furthur ended in 2014, fronting his own band, in Washington DC on January 3, 2020, 5 years ago today.  Download this one to see for yourself how much Kadlecik sounds and plays like Garcia.  The come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back to Back set.

A year ago this very day, on April 18, 2020, dozens of musical performers donated their time for a virtual concert, called  to raise money for the World Health Organization and the front line workers fighting COVID-19. Here in the US, we were about a month into the pandemic, in lock down, hoping that the summer would bring an end to the dreaded disease. Unfortunately, the response to the diseas became politicized, leading to over 500,000 deaths by year end. Economic hardships have impacted millions, as have the mental health challenges of isolation and loneliness. Remote working, virtual learning, mask wearing and so much more have become part of our lives.  The onset of 2021, has brought hope, however, as newly developed vaccines are being distributed throughout the nation.  Maybe soon some normalcy will return, and we'll be able to return to some degree, to life before COVID, including attending live shows rather than watching them on a screen.  This webcast recording captures highlights of that very first virtual concert, including performances by Paul McCartney, Elton, John, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones & Sheryl Crow. May the future be brighter for all of us.  Note - just 10 minutes ago, I purchased tickets to see John Hiatt on September 25!  Maybe by fall, the worst will be over and live music will have made its triumphant return!
