September's Theme At So Many Road

Earlier this year, we featured a theme entitled “Same Tour, Different Show". in which for each artist we posted, we brought you 2 or more concerts from the same tour. Often times, those shows were back to back nights, or even 2 shows from the same day (old guys like me remember the days when bands played early and late shows at places like the Fillmore East, The Palladium and The Capital Theatre). Well, we got such a great reception to that theme, we’ve brought it back for an encore. So, for September, It’s “Same Tour, Different Show - Part 2”.

Pat Benatar - 1983-08-31 - New haven, CT (SBD)

In October 1982, Pat Benatar released Get Nervous, iher fourth studio album The disc debuted on the Billboard 200 album chart the week ending November 20 and peaked at No. 4, staying on the charts for 46 weeks. Three songs from the album were released as singles: Shadows Of The Night, Little Too Late, and Looking For A Strange.  All 3 reached the Billboard Top 40 and Shadows Of The Night garnered Benatar her third Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.  This sounboard recording captures Benatar on tour in support of Get Nervous, in New Haven om August 31, 1983, 31 years ago today.

Elton John - 1986-08-30 - Saratoga, NY (SBD)

On August 15 1986, Elton John launched the North American leg of his World Tour, which would comprise 38 shows in less than two months. The shows featured just 1 song each from his 1985 album Ice on Fire and his soon to be released disc Leather Jackets, Nikita and Paris, respectively. Neither album represented Elton’s best work, despite the fact he was again working with producer Gus Dudgeon, who had been with Elton during his peak in the early 1970s. Elton’s cocaine addiction was hampering his studio work, and also impacted the quality of many of his concerts on this tour. In addition, Elton was thought to be suffering from laryngitis, which reduced his voice to a whisper during some encores. As we now know, the supposed laryngitis was actually nodules on his vocal chords, which would require surgery in early 1987, after he completed a 27 show tour of Australia in November and December of 1986. This soundboard recording catches Elton early in the tour on August 30, 1986, 28 years ago today, in Saratoga Springs. Bruce Springsteen - 2002-08-29 - Planetarium, NY (SBD)

The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community. From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to number 1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey.Three weeks later, on August 29, 2002, a dozen years ago today, Bruce  and the E Street Band opened the MTV Music Awards with a live outdoor performance, in a driving rainstorm, of The Rising from the Hayden Planetarium in New York City.  While the TV audience, however, saw just that song, those who braved the elements to catch a glimpse of Springsteen were treated to a 75 minute impromptu concert.  Download this soundboard recording to hear what the television audience missed!

Grateful Dead - 1982-08-28 - Veneta, OR (SBD)

A decade and a day after the legendary 1972 Veneta show that was officially released as a box set entitled Sunshine Daydream, the Grateful Dead returned to that site for an encore performance.  While the passage of time kept the band from reaching the magical heights of their first venture in Veneta, they still broke out some surprises for the crowd.  China Cat Sunflower into I Know You Rider, normally reserved for opening the 2nd set, was featured as the closer for set 1.  In the 2nd set, the band debuted 2 new songs, Day Job and West L. A. Fadeaway.  For the encore, the Played Dupree’s Diamond Blue for the first time in over 4 years. Bruce Hornsby - 1995-08-27 - Beverly MA (SBD)

On August 9, 1995, 8 days after his 53rd birthday, Jerry Garcia was found dead in his room at a rehabilitation center in Marin County, CA.  Legions of Deadheads mourned his passing, as did his band mates and fellow musicians. Today we bring you a show from Bruce Hornsby, who played with the Dead in the early 1990s, just 18 days after his dear friend Jerry left this earth.  This soundboard recording from August 27, 1995, 18 years ago today, features Hornsby remembering Garcia throughout the show, playing full versions of I Know You Rider, Scarlet Begonias and Iko Iko, while adding snippets of Dark Star and Brokedown Palace within his own tunes. In fact, he dedicated the next to last line of Brokedown Palace, “fare thee well, fare thee well, I love you more than words can tell” to his old friend.  Download this one to hear Bruce pay tribute to his brother in music.

Allman Brothers Band - 1971-08-26 - New York (SBD)

As 1971 began, the Allman Brothers Band was riding a wave of critical success. Their 2nd album, Idlewild South, released in late 1970, had received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The band’s best work, however, was still to come. The Allmans played 2 shows at the Fillmore East on March 12 and 13, which would be recorded and then released as a live album in July of that year. The resulting 2 disc set, simply entitled At Fillmore East, is often called the finest live album ever produced. Rolling Stone ranked it 49th on its list of the greatest albums in rock history. That album sealed the Allman’s reputation as one of rock’s most innovative, exciting and powerful live acts. While the Fillmore shows get the attention thanks to the historic album that documented them, the truth is that on almost every night in 1971, The Allmans, with Duane leading the way, were on fire. This soundboard recording captures the band at A&R studios in NY on August 28, 1971, 43 years ago today, just 5 months after the band's historic Fillmore East shows.  Pay particular attention to the The You Don't Love Me and Soul Serenade combination near the end of the set.  The band effortlessly moves in and out between the two songs, demonstrating the magic that was the early Allman Brothers.  Unfortunately, Duane would die in a motorcycle crash just 3 months later.  Fortunately, you can download this show and keep the spirit alive.

Stevie Ray Vaughan - 1990-08-25 - East Troy, WI (FM)

On August 25 and 26, 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble opened for Eric Clapton during two concerts held at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin. At the 2nd show, SRV took part in a jam session with Clapton, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, and brother, Jimmie Vaughan, who performed Sweet Home Chicago as the finale to Clapton's set. Clapton introduced the group as "the best guitar players in the entire world". Soon after the show, early in the morning on August 27, SRV boarded a helicopter to Chicago. Unfortunately, weather conditions were foggy, and the copter crashed into a nearby hill, killing all on board.  Rock had lost another guitar hero way before his time.  This soundboard recording captures Stevie Ray on August 25, 1990, 2 dozen years ago today, his next to last concert.  Download this one, and remember a legend.

The Eagles - 1994-08-24 - Giants Stadium, NJ (SBD)

Today, we feature an amazing soundboard from The Eagles at Giants Stadium on August 24, 1994, 20 years ago today. The Eagles had broken up in 1980, and had not performed together for 14 years when they decided to reunite for a tour in 1994. Their Hell Freezes Over Tour, (the name was taken from Don Henley’s recurring answer to questions during their hiatus as to when the band would get back together) was gigantic commercial success, running from April 1994 well into 1996. The tour spawned an album by the same name, which sold over 6 million copies. The Eagles were back on top of the rock world, and continue today to sell out stadiums whenever they get together to tour. This show features a great mix of pre and post Joe Walsh tunes, as well as songs from the band members' solo careers.

Robert Plant & Jimmy Page - 1998-08-23 - Cologne, Germany (SBD)

In 1994 reunion between Robert Plant & Jimmy Page fulfilled the hope and dreams of Led Zep fans everywhere when they reunited to record the Unledded album. That was followed by a triumphant world tour in 1995/195. . After that tour, the two went back into the studio and recorded another album, entitled Walking Into Clarksdale. The title referred to a town in the Mississippi Delta, a home of Delta blues music that influenced the duo. Released in April 1998, the album went to #8 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #3 in the UK. Plant and Page went back on tour in support of Walking Into Clarksdale, touring North America and Europe in the Summer and Fall of 1998. At the tour’s end, however, Robert Plant decided he wanted to pursue some new musical directions. He and Page parted on good terms, each to return to his own solo career. This soundboard recording captures the duo on November 13, 1998, 16 years ago today, in Germany. Paul McCartney & Wings - 1972-08-22 - Antwerp, Belgium (SBD) 

After the Beatles' break-up in 1970, McCartney recorded two albums:  the solo disc, McCartney, in 1970, and Ram, with his wife Linda, in 1971. Soon after the release of Ram, Paul decided to once again try his hand at working with a band. He formed Wings, explaining that the name came to him while praying during the difficult birth of his daughter Stella, a birth that nearly cost Linda and her new child their lives. In early 1972, Wings went on an impromptu tour of universities in the UK, showing up unannounced and playing for whoever happened to be on campus at the time. In July of that year, he launched a more formal tour, Wings Over Europe, designed to promote the singles Give Ireland Back to the Irish and Mary Had a Little Lamb. The band, with Linda, the McCartney children and their road crew, loaded up in a brightly colored double decker bus, driving across Europe for the 26 date engagement. This soundboard recording captures part of Wings penultimate show of the tour, on August 22, 1972, 42 years ago today. In Antwerp. As a bonus, we’ve thrown in the complete audience version of the show - the sound is rough but we figured collectors would enjoy it.

Van Morrison - 1970-08-21 - Yellow Springs, OH (SBD) 

After recording Astral Weeks in at A&R studios in New York City in late 1968, Morrison moved to a home on a mountain top in upstate New York near Woodstock (yes - that Woodstock) to begin work on his next album. By the middle of 1969, Morrison had completed his work, but the musical arrangements for each new song were all in his head, not on paper. Nonetheless, he went back to A&R Studios in August 1969, where he developed the music almost spontaneously, recording most of the vocals live. The result was the album, Moondance, which to this day may be the most famous and lauded disc of his long illustrious career. Songs from the album such as Caravan, Into The Mystic, And It Stoned Me, and the title track, just to name a few, became staples of FM radio. Robert Christgau gave the disc a grade of A+ while Rolling Stone ranked the album at #65 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Moreover, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. This soundboard recording captures Morrison on August 21, 1970, 44 years ago today, in Ohio on tour in support of his recent;y released masterpiece.

Joe Cocker - 1994-08-20 - New York, NY (SBD) 

In 1994, Joe Cocker released his 14th studio album entitled Have A Little Faith. The disc took its title from the John Hiatt tune, Have A Little Faith In Me, which Cocker covered on the album. This soundboard recording captures the late, great Mr. Cocker on tour in support of the disc at Irving Plaza in NY on August 20, 1994, 20 years ago today.

On September 27, 2005, Sheryl Crow released her 5th studio album , entitled Wilflower.  the disc debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts and would climb to #25 in the UK. Incredibly, that still made it less commercially successful than her prior albums. In December 2005, the disc was nominated for the Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy, while Sheryl was nominated for the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Grammy for the song Good Is Good. Yjos FM broadcast captures Shery on teh program AOL Sessions, providing a preview of her sonn to be rleased album, on Augsut 19, 2005, 9 years ago today.

Santana - 1970-08-18 - Lennox, MA (SBD)

As mentioned in an earlier post, Bill Graham promoted the first rock concert at Tanglewood in Lennox MA in the summer of 1969. Billed as “The Fillmore at Tanglewood”, the concert featured BB King, Jefferson Airplane, and The Who, quite a line up for a venue which had traditionally featured classical artists and served as the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The gig was so successful; however, that Graham was back the next summer with a whole series of shows. Santana played Tanglewood on August 18, 1970, 44 years ago today, just over a year after their historic set at Woodstock. By August 1970, Carlos had added a teenage guitar prodigy from San Francisco to the band by the name of Neal Schon. Just how good was Schon? Well, Eric Clapton has also invited him to join Derek and the Dominos. less than a month later, Santana would release their2nd album, entitled Abraxas. The disc would climb to #1 on the billboard charts and spawn two of Santana’s best know singles, Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va, which went to #4 and #13 respectively on the charts. In 2003, Rolling Stone would rank Abraxas at #205 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - 1984-08-17 - Halifax, Canada (FM) 

Bachman–Turner Overdrive (BTO) had their heyday in the 1970s, with songs such as Let It Ride, Roll On Down the Highway, Takin' Care of Business and the number 1 hit, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet. Success came and went quickly, however, and by the end of the decade, BTO had disbanded. Of course, since nothing is forever in the rock world, BTO reformed in 1983, releasing a new album and launching a North American tour. This FM broadcast captures BTO during that reunion tour on August 17, 1984, 30 years ago today, in Canada.

Rolling Stones - 2002-08-16 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

The Rolling Stones must really like the city of Toronto.  Since their 1989 Steel Wheels tour, that Canadian City has been one of the first stops on each of their sojourns to North America. In fact, in 2002, the Stones warmed up for their Live Licks tour with this performance on August 16, 2002, a dozen years ago today, in Toronto at the Palais Royale Ballroom.  At the time, The Paris Royale,  which was recently renovated, was a small night club that held less than a 1000 people.  Download this one to hear the Stones in a far more intimate setting than their normal stadium sized concerts!

Neil Young - 2008-08-15 - Colmar, France (SBD Matrix)

In March 2005, while working on the Prairie Wind album in Nashville, Neil Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. He was treated successfully in an operation performed in a New York hospital on March 29. Two days later, Young passed out on a New York street from bleeding from the femoral artery, which surgeons had used to access the aneurysm. Neil was again treated, and again, recovered. After 2 such close brushes with death, most people would have probably retired to a nice quiet life, thankful to still have some more days ahead of them. Neil Young, however, is not most people. His life since the aneurysm has been as busy as prior to the operation. By September 2005, Prairie Wind had been released, and the album's live premiere in Nashville was immortalized by filmmaker Jonathan Demme in the 2006 film, Neil Young: Heart of Gold. The next year, he was back on the road with CSNY as part of the Freedom of Speech tour, protesting the policies of then President George Bush. In 2007, he released Chrome Dreams II, a sequel to an album he never released! Typical Neil -- always doing things his way! He continued to tour extensively, playing over 100 shows in 2007 and 2008 combined. This SBD Matrix audience catches Neil in France on August 15, 2008, 6 years ago today and just about 3 years after his aneurysm. Download this and you’ll see (and hear) that despite all he’s been through, Neil can still rock with the best of them.

Twenty five years after the original festival, rock royalty came together once again at Woodstock in August 1994.  That 25th anniversary concert was originally scheduled for August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. A 3rd day was eventually added on August 12. Interestingly, many of the artists who played Woodstock 1994 did not perform at the original festival. Last year we presented 2 such bands, Traffic and The Allman Brothers. Today, we have another legend who missed out on 1969, the one and only Bob Dylan.  This soundboard recording captures Dylan on August 14, 1994, 2 decades ago today, performing before an audience of 350,000. Despite the rain and mud, conditions similar to those in 1969, the crowd was mostly well behaved and embodied the spirit shown by those who attended the original Woodstock. In the summer of 2006, Steely Dan, a band that once went 2 decades without playing live, announced they would launch their 3rd tour of the new century. Billed as the Steelyard "Sugartooth" McDan and The Fab-Originees.com Tour, the itinerary included stops in 33 cites, opening on July 7 and wrapping up on September 4. Donald Fagan and Walter Becker put together a 10 piece band for the run, including Keith Carlock on drums, Freddie Washington on bass, and Jon Herington on guitar. In addition, sharing the bill with Steely Dan for the tour was former band member Michael McDonald, who of course later played with the Doobie Brothers. This soundboard recording captures Steely Dan on August 12, 2006, 8 years ago today, in Charlotte, NC. Michael McDonald sits in with the band during the last 7 songs, his first time playing with Steely Dan in over 25 years. Download this one, therefore, to hear an historic reunion!

Bob Seger - 1986-08-11 - Saratoga Springs, NY (SBD)

In April 1986, Bob Seger released Like A Rock, the 13th studio recording of his long, storied career. The disc would climb to number 3 on the Billboard charts, sell over 3 million copies and spawn two top 20 hits, the title track at #12 and American Storm at #13. The title track would also go onto be featured in a series of ads for Chevrolet, as Seger, a Detriot native, looked to help that city’s struggling auto industry. Seeger toured extensively in support of the album, playing 105 shows over 9 months, selling 1.5 million tickets in the process. This soundboard recording captures Seger and the Silver Bullet Band on August 11, 1986, 28 years ago today, in Saratoga Springs. John Fogerty - 2004-08-10 - Austin, TX (SBD)

On September 21, 2004, John Fogerty released the album Déjà Vu (All Over Again), his first disc of new material in over 7 years. The album explored a variety of musical styles ranging from Fogerty’s traditional swamp rock sound to rockabilly to psychedelic rock to even punk and new wave. Fogerty previewed several tracks from Déjà Vu (All Over Again) during this performance on the famed PBS show Austin City Limits, on August 10, 2004, a decade ago today. Pink Floyd - 1980-08-09 - London, UK (SBD)

Pink Floyd's monumental 1979 double album, The Wall, was a direct outgrowth of Roger Water's experiences during the band's 1977 World tour. As documented in numerous posts on this blog, Waters, during that tour, began to feel more and more alienated from his audience, which resulted in numerous incidents ranging from yelling obscenities to spitting in the face of a fan. The Wall focuses on themes of isolation and abandonment, telling the tale of Pink, a character based on Waters. When Pink Floyd decided to tour in support The Wall in 1980, the band spared no expense in ensuring that the theatrics, staging and sound quality would be unlike any concert ever before performed. The band spent over $1.5 million on lighting, sound equipment, props, etc. before they even played a concert. The shows would include the building of a giant wall across the stage, which would eventually be torn down as the show progressed. Due to the cost and effort involved in staging each individual concert, Pink Floyd only performed The Wall live 31 times in just 4 cities, in 1980 and 1981. Those 31 shows had an enormous impact on rock concerts, however, as noted by the NY Times in its March 2nd, 1980 edition. The Times wrote "The Wall show remains a milestone in rock history and there's no point in denying it. Never again will one be able to accept the technical clumsiness, distorted sound and meager visuals of most arena rock concerts as inevitable. The Wall show will be the touchstone against which all future rock spectacles must be measured." This soundboard recording captures Pink Floyd playing in London on August 9, 1980, 34 years ago today. Perhaps it was no coincidence that The Wall tour would be the last with Roger Waters as a member of the band. Waters not only built a wall across the stage, but also one between himself and his fellow band mates.
