Our last post this month of a concert where I was in attendance. On August 29, 1992, 34 years ago today, I went to see CSN at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, the 6th and final time I would see the trio. (I also saw CSN in 1978, 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1989, plus CSNY in 2000). At the time,  the idea of a rock band playing a casino still seemed a bit cheesy.  The thought was that artists played Vegas and AC when they were past their prime, when they had become parodies of their former selves, oldies acts playing to overweight, over served businessmen trying to relive their youth. I was pleasantly surprised, therefore,  to see that much of the audience were true fans of the band, much like myself.  CSN played a show worthy of any true rock venue, except for the moment when Graham Nash stormed off stage because the audience wouldn’t quiet down for a new song he attempted during the band’s acoustic set.  Fortunately, David Crosby jumped into the void created by his band mate’s temper tantrum and unleashed an incredible version of Almost Cut My Hair.  Download this soundboard recording of the show, and know that you won’t have to worry about losing your money in the slot machines after it’s over.

I've seen CSN on 6 occasions between 1978 and 1992, and then once with sometimes partner Neil Young in 2000! I've also seen Stills in 1979 solo, as well as sitting in with the Grateful Dead in 1983. In addition I saw Crosby solo in 2015. (I've also see Neil solo numerous times but that's for a post later this month).

Earthquake Benefit - 1989-11-26 - Daly City, CA (FM)

1980s - #4: On October 17, 1989, an arthquake wuth a magniude of 6.9 struck the San Francisco area, killing 63 people and injuring 3800 others.  The quake, the strongest to hit the region since 1906, did over $6 billion in damage. As had been the case with other tragedies, rock and rollers came together to help raise money for those impacted by the deadly quake.  This FM broadcast captures highlights of the Earthquake Relief Benefit concert from the Cow Palace on November 26, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today, including sets from Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, America, Eddie Money, Steve Miller, and Jessie Colin Young.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1992-08-19 - Tulsa, OK (SBD)

Jerry Garcia's links with CSN go all the way back to the early 1970s, though none may be more significant than their early work together during the recording of the album Déjà vu. Graham Nash asked Garcia to play pedal steel guitar on the now iconic tune, Teach Your Children.  After one take, Nash told Garcia, "Thanks Jerry, you’re done." Despite Garcia's protests, Nash held firm, recalling that "The first one was exactly what I wanted.’ And of course, his pedal steel was one of the defining elements in that recording." In return for Garcia's help, CSN helped the Dead work on their harmonies for their upcoming albums Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. David Crosby sat in on several occasions with the Dead, including 8/19/1970. 9/10/1972 and 12/31/1972. His most famous appearances with The Dead, however, are from December 1971, when he, Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart played a series of rehearsals and shows at The Matrix in San Francisco, billed as David & Dorks. Stephen Stills joined The Dead on stage twice in 1969, on October 25 and December 12, and twice in 1983, on April 16 and 17. Both the Dead and CSN had long associations with Bill Graham, and performed at his memorial concert, as did Neil Young on November 3, 1991.

Live Aid - 1985-07-13 - London, UK & Philadelphia, PA (Part 1) (FM)

When Bob Geldorf organized an effort in late 1984 to recruit an all star cast of rock stars to record a charity single to raise money to address the famine in Ethiopia, he had little idea what idea would eventually transpire. Band Aid's recording of Do They Know Its Christmas would eventually evolve into one of the largest charity initiatives in history, the world wide concert held on July 13, 1985, 4 decades ago today, known as Live Aid. Billed as the "global jukebox", the Live Aid festival was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, with 72,000 in attendance, and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia,, with a crowd of about 100,000 people. On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were also held in other countries, such as Australia and Germany . It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time, as estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched Live Aid. Over 50 different rock artists performed for over 16 hours between the 2 concerts at Wembley and Philadelphia, making it one of the largest and longest single day rock festivals in history. Most importantly, the effort raised over $283 million for famine relief. Go here for even more details on Live Aid!

After years of searching, I finally found a complete FM recording of the entire show, from July 13, 1985, 40 years ago today, which had originally been broadcast on the BBC and ABC radio networks, as well as televised on MTV and ABC. We're presenting it today in 3 posts, which encompass over 15 cds worth of music. The posts run in chronological order, from the opening notes at Wembley to the closing song at JFK. Normally, I post the entire set list, but the song list is so long for this show, that it won't fit in the post. So I just listed all the artists and you can find the set lists on the artwork. This post features the early portion of the show, including such artists as Status Quo, Joan Baez, Elvis Costello, The Four Tops, Black Sabbath (with Ozzy!), Sting and Phil Collins, who would be the only artist to play on both sides of the Atlantic at Live Aid. Also featured are musicians from Australia, Japan, Austria, and Yugoslavia. Live Aid may have been the first true multi-national rock festival, with performers from all across the globe, and from countless musical genres, uniting for one common cause. 1997 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1997-05-06 - Cleveland OH (TV SBD)

1990s - #1: The 1997 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony took place in the very city where the museum is located, Cleveland. Stephen Still became the first person ever inducted twice in one night, when both CSN and Buffalo Springfield entered the hall. Neil Young skipped the event, annoyed by both the ticket prices and the fact it was televised. Michael Jackson joined his brothers on stage for the induction of the Jackson 5, but did not perform. Perhaps the highlight of the night was that the The Rascals reunited, putting aside years of infighting, to accept their induction and perform People Got To Be Free.

1990s - #1: On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That firs concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This FM and TV SBD recording captures highlights from Farm Aid 1990, held in Indianapolis on April 7, 1990, 35 years ago today. CSN 2015 - Back To Back - #1:  In March 2015, CSN toured Japan for the first time since 1996.  The two concerts were part of a 47 date world tour that also took them to North America and Europe.  They ended the year with a Christmas performance at the National Christmas Tree in Washington DC.  Ironically, they said their performance was to inspire peace on earth but the trio could not keep the peace among themsleves.  Soon after, tensions arose between Crosby and Nash, with both vowing the band would never play another show.  And with Crosby's death, the end of CSN is now permanent.  This IEM recording captures night 1 in Japan during what has now become the last CSN tour, on March 5, 2015, a decade ago today. Viet Nam Veterans Benefit - 1986-11-11 - Lawrence, KS (FM) 

1986: Incredibly, for a concert featuring Mike Finnigan, CSN, George Thorogood , and John Fogerty, very little information exists on line about this show.  The benefit, which was held on Veterans Day,  was sponored by a student organization at Univerity Of Kansas. Student organizer Craig Kruege explained that "We wanted to help the Vietnam vets and do our little part to honor them and we thought this would be the most appropriate way - youth helping youth". All proceeds went toward scholarships for the children of Vietnam vets. This FM broadcast captures the benefit show in its entirety, from November 11, 1986, 38 years ago today.  And please take a momwnt toiday to honor all those who have served in the miltary protecting our freedoms.

When Crosby, Stills Nash & Young took the stage at Woodstock on August 17, 1969 it was just the 3rd time the band had ever performed live. The first two had come just the day before, in Chicago, where they performed early and late shows at the Auditorium Theater. CSNY was one of the first "super groups", bands composed of artists who had already been successful either as solo artists or with other bands. In CSNY's case, Neil and Stephen had played with Buffalo Springfield, David with The Byrds and Graham with The Hollies. Blind Faith, who did not play at Woodstock (more on that in later posts this month) is the other candidate for the title of first super group, with Clapton and Baker having played with Cream, and Winwood with Traffic. 

Nine years after Woostock in late 1987, the on again, off again quartet reformed to record the album American Dreams. Neil Young and David Crosby had made a pact - if Crosby went into rehab to kick his drug addictions, Young would rejoin his former band mates to work on a new album. That disc would eventually be released in November 1988, and go to #16 on the Billboard charts, though critical reviews were tepid. Once recording was done, Neil went off on his own again, long before the album hit the stores, Despite Neil’s departure, CSN decided to tour in the summer of 1988 in advance of the album’s release. Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1989-11-08 - Santa Cruz, CA (SBD)

I've seen CSN on 6 occasions between 1978 and 1992, and then once with sometimes partner Neil Young in 2000! I've also seen Stills and Crosby (not to mention Neil) solo!

Crosby, Still & Nash (along with sometimes partner Young) have been long time champions  other social and political causes. They have been active in helping to end world hunger, playing Live Aid in 1985, and Hungerthon concerts in 1988 and 1989, They participated in the No Nukes concerts in 1979 and the Crackdown on Crack concerts in 1986.  On the political front, they were leaders of the oppositiion to the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s, and opposed the Bush administrations policies during the 2006 Freedom of Speech tour. They have written or sung some of the great protest songs of all time, such as For What Its Worth (Stills with Buffalo Springfield), Almost Cut My Hair, Long Time Gone, Chicago, and Ohio (Neil backed by CSN). Few artists have been as socially active as CSN, as they continue to live the 1960s vision that rock and roll can change the world.  In keeping with their tradition of supporting social causes, this soundboard captures their concert to aid the victims of the Santa Cruz earthquake on November 8, 1989, 44 years ago today.

Crosby, Stills, & Nash - 1988-09-08 - Tempe, AZ (SBD)

In late 1987, CSNY reformed to record the album American Dreams. Neil Young and David Crosby had made a pact - if Crosby went into rehab to kick his drug addictions, Young would rejoin his former band mates to work on a new album. That disc, entitled, American Dreams, would eventually be released in November 1988, and go to #16 on the Billboard charts, though critical reviews were tepid. Despite the hopes that the reunion would be permanent, Young left the band long before the album hit the stores, Despite Neil’s departure, CSN decided to tour in the summer of 1988 in advance of the album’s release. This soundboard recording captures the band on September 8, 1988, 35 years ago today, in Tempe.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1992-08-19 - Tulsa, OK (SBD)

This soundboard recording captures CSN in Tulsa on August 19 1992, 32 years ago today.  CSN (and sometimes partner Neil Young, who will get to tomorrow) have numerous connections to all 3 bands we are featuring this month. In 1970, when CSNY went into the studio to record the album Déjà vu,  Graham Nash asked Jerry Garcia to play pedal steel guitar on the now iconic tune, Teach Your Children.  After one take, Nash told Garcia, "Thanks Jerry, you’re done." Despite Garcia's protests, Nash held firm, recalling that "The first one was exactly what I wanted.’ And of course, his pedal steel was one of the defining elements in that recording." In return for Garcia's help, CSN helped the Dead work on their harmonies for their upcoming albums Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty. David Crosby sat in on several occasions with the Dead, including 8/19/1970. 9/10/1972 and 12/31/1972. His most famous appearances with The Dead, however, are from December 1971, when he, Garcia, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart played a series of rehearsals and shows at The Matrix in San Francisco, billed as David & Dorks. Stephen Stills joined The Dead on stage twice in 1969, on October 25 and December 12, and twice in 1983, on April 16 and 17. Both the Dead and CSN had long associations with Bill Graham, and performed at his memorial concert, as did Neil Young on November 3, 1991.

In addition to the connections with the Dead, CSN have many links to the Allmans and The Band. Both CSN & The Allmans played ta the Crackdown on Crack concert at Madison Square Garden on October 31, 1986. Crosby & Nash sat in with the Allman Brothers at a July 27, 2011 concert at the Beacon Theater to raise funds to fight Hepatitis C. Stepehn Stills recorded a cover of Midnight Rider for his 1973 album Thoroughfare Gap.  Both The Band and CSNY performed at Woodtsock in 1969, as of course, did the Grateful Dead.  In 2014, Nash wrote the tune Back Home, which was a tribute to The Band's Leveon Helm, who was dying of cance.

Crosby Stills & Nash - 2012-06-20 - Westbury, NY (SBD)

I saw Crosby Stills & Nash for the first time in 1978, when the band was riding high after the release of the CSN album a year earlier. That disc climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts, while the single, Just A Song Before I Go, reached the #7 spot. Since that first show, I've seen them 5 other times - in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1990 and 1992 - not to mention a CSNY show in 2000, plus solo concerts by Stills in 1979 and Crosby in 2015.

This soundboard recording captures the trio on their 2012 summer tour, at the NYCB Theatre in Westbury on June 20, 2012, 11 years.  While some places list this as June 21 (the band played the venue on both the 20th and 21st), the fact that Nash ast one point tells folks"to come back tmorrow" leads me to beleive its from the first of the 2 nights.

As mentioned in our David Crosby post yesterday, I've saw CSN on 6 occasions between 1978 and 1992, and then once with sometimes partner Neil Young in 2000! I've also seen Stills and Crosby (not to mention Neil) solo! It all started with thos concert, on Ju;y 30, 1978, 44 years ago at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Isalnd.  The band was on tour in support of the CSN album, which featured such tunes as Just A Song Before I Go, Cathedral, Shadow Captain and I Give You Give Blind, just to name a few. Despite that fact that the horrible acoustics at the Nassau Coliseum didn't do the band's harmonies any favors, CSN were at the top of their gane on this tour. The Not Fade Away to end the acoustic set was a great surprise (amazing how many artists play that tune live!) and the quartet of Deja Vu, Long Time Gone, Wooden Ships and Carry On prior to the encore featured a band on fire.  Unfortunately, the tape doesn't do the show justice - its an ordinary audience cassette with several flaws. But it was a chance to post a show I actually attended - just know what you're getting before you download.
