Kingfish - 1984-12-26 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

After departing Kingfish in August 1976 as the Grateful Dead returned to full time touring, Bob Weir went 8 years before he again took the stage with them.  Then in fall 1984, Weir rejoined Kingfish as a part time member, playing sporadically with the group over the next 3 years. This soundboard recording captures Weir with Kingfish on December 26, 1984, 40 years ago today, at the Stone in San Francisco.  Bill Kreutzmann and Merl Saunders also sit in. Of note, the tape has a brief set from George Thorogood between the two by Kingfish, but it may not be from this date.  According to the GDsets.com site, the Thorogood appearance came on October 26 (not December 26) at the same venue. The 2 Kingfish sets match exactly what the GDsets.com shows for December 26. (go here for more info).

From October 1974 to June 1976, The Grateful Dead took an extended break from touring from October 1974 to Spring 1976. During the Dead's hiatus, Bob Weir joined his long time pal, Matthew Kelly in the band Kingfish. Weir's arrival had two major impacts on the band, which were both a blessing and a curse. First, Kingfish finally got a recording contract, thanks to the Grateful Dead's new label, Round Records. Second, from that point in they were often identified as Bob Weir's backing band.  This soundboard recording captures Kingfish with Weir on their home turf in San Francisco on February 7, 1976, 4 dozen years ago this very day!

Weir's arrival had two major impacts on the band, which were both a blessing and a curse. First, Kingfish finally got a recording contract, thanks to the Grateful Dead's new label, Round Records. Second, from that point in they were often identified as Bob Weir's backing band. About a dozen years later, when the Dead were again on a break as Jerry Garcia recovered from a diabetic coma, Weir once again joined his old pal Matt Kelly and Kingfish for a series of shows. This soundboard captures Weir and Kingfish in Nevada on September 7, 1986, 31 years ago today.

Matthew Kelly co-founded Kingfish in 1973 with New Riders of the Purple Sage bass player Dave Torbert and fellow San Francisco Bay Area musicians Robbie Hoddinott, Chris Herold, and Mick Ward. However, Ward died in a car accident later that year, and was soon replaced by Barry Flast, another keyboardist from San Francisco. And of course, Bob Weir, also from San Francisco, would join the band for a while in the mid 1970s while the Grateful Dead were on hiatus. This FM broadcast captures Kingfish at My Father’s Place in Rosyln, NY on November 18, 1975, 39 years ago today

Much like the Grateful Dead, Kingfish is an American band with roots in San Francisco. Matthew Kelly co-founded Kingfish in 1973 with New Riders of the Purple Sage bass player Dave Torbert and fellow San Francisco Bay Area musicians Robbie Hoddinott, Chris Herold, and Mick Ward. However, Ward died in a car accident later that year, and was soon replaced by Barry Flast, another keyboardist from San Francisco. And of course, the Dead's Bob Weir, also from San Francisco, would join the band for a while in the mid 1970s. This FM broadcast captures Kingfish at the Beacon Theatre in New York on April 3, 1976, 38 years ago today. The Beacon, by the way, is one of my favorite venues. Located on the upper west side of NYC, the Beacon is a magnificent 3000 seat theater, with wonderful acoustics. The Beacon was recently purchased by Madison Square Garden's parent company, Cablevision, and they have painstakingly refurbished it. The surrounding neighborhood, filled with great restaurants, shops and brownstones, is one of the best in New York. Take in a show at the Beacon if you can -- it's worth it. Now back to the Kingfish show - Weir was still at the helm for this concert, as the Grateful Dead would not resume touring again until June 1976. This show features more Dead tunes than in L.A gig from March (also posted on this blog a few years ago)., as Promised Land, and Lazy Lightning > Supplication joined the set list, to go with Around & Around, New Minglewood Blues and One More Saturday Night. Still , the bulk of the show showcases Kingfish's own repertoire of tunes. By the way, the 2 shows I've posted are the only ones from the 1970s by Kingfish I've ever been able to find. You may want to grab both as they showcase a rare moment in time, as Weir and Kingfish would soon part ways.

Later that summer, with the Grateful Dead on hiatus in the wake of Jerry Garcia’s recovery from a diabetic coma, Weir again joined up with Kingfish for another short tour. This soundboard captures Weir and Kingfish on the 2nd night of that summer tour, on August 10, 1986, 26 years ago today, in Denver.
