I saw The Police just once, in January 1982, at Madison Square Garden, but what a historic show it was. The Go Gos, who opened, had the #1 album on the Billboard charts at the time. The Police, who headlined, had the #2 album on those charts! New Wave had arrived, commanding the charts and selling out "The World's Most Famous Arena."

Today we skip ahead over 2 decades from that legenday show. On February 11, 2007, The Police reunited after being apart for almost 20 years for a performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. As they took the stage for the Grammy’s, the trio proclaimed "Ladies and gentlemen, we are The Police, and we're back!” The next day, at a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go, they announced they would launch a world tour starting in Vancouver on May 28. The tour would last well over a year, with the final show played held on August 7, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Police sold 3.7 million tickets and grossed $358 million during their reunion sojourn, making it the third-highest-grossing tour of all-time at its conclusion. This excellent audience recording captures The Police on August 30, 2007, 19 years ago today, in Stockholm near the beginning of their historic reunion tour.

As the 1980’s became the 1990’s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The band reformed in 1989, on the heels on Greg Allman’s solo success with the song I’m No Angel and renewed public interest after the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the band’s 20th anniversary. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. The newly reformed band would play live for nother quarter century, until their final shiow in 2014! This soundboard recording captures the Allman's in New Orleans on May 5, 2007, 19 years ago today.

Jimmy Buffett was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the Class of 2024, which also included Cher, Dave Matthews, Peter Frampton, Ozzy Osbourne, and Mary J. Blige, just to name a few. Buffett was inducted for "Musical Excellence", another nebulous category which no one can really define. Afterall aren't all the folks inducted as performers excellent? If not, why the hell are they in the Hall of Fame?

In any event this soundboard recording captures Jimmy in Frisco on April 28, 2007, 19 years ago today, on tour in support of the album Take The Weather With You, which had been released on October 10, 2006. The album went to #1 on Billboard's country charts, while also reaching #4 on the Billboard 200. In an interesting twist, 10 of the 14 songs on the album were covers. Of the 4 tunes Jimmy wrote or co-wrote, two, Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On and Bahama Breeze, were written about Hurricane Katrina and its impact on the Gulf Coast.

Seger fans would need a long memory because that would be his last live performance for over a decade. Seger told the Contra Costa Times that “I took about a nine-year period to raise my kids. “It was just really important to me to not leave my wife with the whole thing. And to go to all the things that you go to, whether it is cheer leading practice or marching-band practice or games or birthdays -- the whole nine yards. I just wanted to be there for that.” Seger returned to touring in late 2006, selling out show after show, leading him to extend the run into 2007. This soundboard recording captures him in his hometown of Detroit on March 15, 2007, 19 years ago today.

Here's our 4th post of the day, containing parts 7, 8 and 9 of the 2007 Crossroads Festival, from July 28, 2007, 18 years ago this very day. First, Jeff Beck plays a sensational set, including a stunning reinvention of the Beatles’ A Day in the Life, in which he recreates all the elaborate vocal melodies and orchestrations with little more than the six strings of his guitar. Then, EC himself took the stage, for a set heavy on music from Derek and the Dominos. Derek Trucks sat in for the entire set, helping to push Clapton to be at his best. EC also got some help from Robbie Robertson for 2 songs, before reuniting with Blind Faith compatriot, Steve Winwood! And how fitting that they end their set with Crossroads! After that, Chicago blues Buddy Guy took the stage followed a 3 song finale featuring all the day's performers! A veritable legion of Guitar Gods all on stage at once!

At one point in their career, Steely Dan, went almost two decades without touring, from 1974 to 1993, in order to focus on studio material.  Once they did return to the road, however, they seemed to want to make uo for liost time,  After tours in 1993 and 1996, Steely Dan lauched the 21st century by taking to the road in 2000, They then also toured in 2003, and then every year from 2006 to 2017. In fact, despite the death of  Walter Becker in 2017, Steely Dan, led only by Donald Fagan at this point, will be on the road again in 2018. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Steely Dan during the Heavy Rollers tour, at the North Sea Jazz Festival,  on July 15, 2007, 18 years ago today.

To say Dave Mason has had an interesting rock & roll career would be an understatement. In the late 1960s, he was an on again, off again member of Traffic. Around that time, he played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's legendary version of All Along The Watchtower, In the 1970s and 1980s. he had a successful solo career, especially with his 1977 album, Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. For a brief time in the 1990s, Mason was a member of Fleetwood Mac, releasing the album Time with them in 1995. In 1997, he was scheduled to be a member of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, performing Only You Know and I Know, We Just Disagree and Feelin Alright, but he was dropped from rehearsals before the tour started. That may explain why he doesn't always get the recognition he deserves as he didn't seem to be able to stick around with a band for more than a brief moment. That said, Mason has never stopped touring, playing upwards of 100 shows a year. This soundboard recording captures Mason in Chicago on September 29, 2007, 17 years ago today.

And to go to all the things that you go to, whether it is cheer leading practice or marching-band practice or games or birthdays -- the whole nine yards. I just wanted to be there for that.” Seger returned to touring in late 2006, selling out show after show, leading him to extend the run  into 2007.  This soundboard recording captures him in his hometown of Detroit on March 17, 2007, 13 years ago today.

Probably the biggest name indcuted at the 2007 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Ceremony was Van Halen, but neither David Lee Roth, nor the the Van Halen Brothers showed up.  Grandmaster Flash became the first hip hop group inducted (I'll leave it to you to decide it that's a positive or negative).  Patti Smith finally got in, after appearing at numeorus ceremonies to perform tribute songs to honor another inductes. REM's induction was highlighted by a reunion with Bill Berry, who had left the band after suffering a brain aneurysm.  And the Ronettes reminded everyone why the term "Sixties Girl Group" was a badge of rock & roll honor

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on March 12, 2007, 17 years.s ago today.  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

He has had number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic, selling over 100 million records. He has hosted 2 TV variety series, one in the 1970's and one in the 1980's. He has performed every style of music imaginable, including pop, rock, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, techno, soul and gospel. He has sung the theme song to numerous movies, including What's New Pussy Cat and The Emperor's New Groove. His voice, with its trademark Welsh accent, makes every song he sings instantly identifiable. And his electrifying live performances still result in women throwing their underwear onto the stage. He is Tom Jones, and even after 50 years in the music business, he still has that magic when he takes the stage to captivate an audience.
