I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992. Cockburn also joined Weir during the encore of The Weight.  More on that show in our Weir post later this month.

I've only seen Sting solo once, on February 15,1991. The tickets were a Valentine's Day gift for my then girlfriend of just under a year. Two weeks later I asked her to marry me, she said yes and its been the best years of my life! Every good book, even my tale of rock & roll, needs a good love story! 

Two years later, on March 9th, 1993, Sting released Ten Summoner’s Tales, his 4th solo album since the breakup of the Police in 1987. The album title is a pun on his real surname (Sumner). The album went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. Ten Summoner’s Tales, would be nominated for 6 Grammys, and win 3, including best Pop Vocal performance for If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, the first single from the album. That tune would reach #17 on the Billboard charts in the US, while another song from the album, Fields of Gold, would climb to #23. Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to all 6 inhabited continents. This FM broadcast captures Sting in Germany on August 21, 1993, 33 years ago today, during the early stages of that tour. I've only seen the Neville Brothers live in concert on one occasion - on July 10, 1989 when they sat in during the 2nd set with the Grateful Dead! My seats were so far away from the stage that I initially thought the folks who joined the Dead on stage that night were Los Lobos, who had led in. Only when I read the concert review in the paper the next day did I learn it was the Nevilles!

Allman Brothers Band - 1993-08-03 - Columbia, MD (SBD)

I saw the Allman Brothers live twice - once in July 1979 right before their early 1980s break up and then again in October 1986 at the Crackdown on Crack concert with CSN and Santana. Both shows were at Madison Square Garden. Unfortunately, neither show found the band in peak form.

Today's post goes back to 1990s, when the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the band on August 3, 1993, 33 years ago today. Download this one to hear the Allman Brothers regain their place as one of the finest live bands of the rock era.

Santana 1993 - Back To Back - #1: In May 1992, Carlos Santana released his 16th studio album, Milagro. Milagro, which means "miracle" in Spanish, was dedicated to the lives of Miles Davis and Bill Graham, both of whom passed away in late 1991. Unfortunately for Carlos, the album became his first not to chart in the Billboard Top 100. The 1990’s were a difficult time for Santana, as his commercial appeal was at its absolute lowest point. That would not change until the last year of the decade, when he returned to the top of the charts with the album Supernatural and the single Smooth. All those events, though, were in the future when Carlos took the stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival  in The Hague, on July 11, 1993, 33 years ago today. If his album sales weren’t quite what they had been in the past, his playing most certainly was as good as ever, as this soundboard recording clearly reveals. On June 12, 1993, Bob Dylan launched a summer tour of Europe, which would run until July 17.  It was his second trip to Europe that year. During this run, Dylan played some of the longers shows of his career, with many tunes faturing long extended jams and improvisation, unlike anything Dylan had done before or since. Bruce Hornsby - 1993-06-23 - Hamburg, Germany (FM)

Bruce Hornsby is one of those rare artists I've seen as a lead in performer, a solo headliner, and as part of a group. In May 1987, I saw him lead in for the Grateful Dead at Leguna Seca, the only Dead show I attended on the West Coast. Then, between 1993 and 2018, my wife and I saw Bruce as the headliner on 6 different occasions, some shows solo, some with the Range, and some with the Nosiemakers. Then after 5 years without seeing Mr. Hornsby, we went to 2 of his shows in 2023, a solo performance in March and a concert with the Noisemakers  n June! That makes Hornsby just 1 of 7 artists - the others are the Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, The Band, Los Lobos, Joe Jackson and Bruce Springsteen - that I have seen 2 or more times in the same year. On top of that, we saw him 9 times as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1990 and 1991 combined! By the way, if you like keeping track of those kind of statistics releated to the comcerts you have attended, my book has a chapter filled with them that I'm sure you will enjoy.

This soundboard recording captures Bruce on tour in Hamburg on June 23, 1993, 33 years ago today. Earlier that year he had released the album. Gin Blossoms - 1993-05-13 - Solano Beach, CA (SBD) 

On August 4, 1992, the Gin Blossoms released the album New Miserable Experience, which quickly became the band's breakthrough disc. The first single released from the album, Hey Jealousy, reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went to #4 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album would eventually go quadruple platinum in sales. Some of that success was overshadowed, however, by the suicide of band founder, Doug Hopkins, who had been dismissed from the group right before they made it big due to his issues with alcohol. This soundboard recording captures the Gin Blossoms on tour in support of their debut disc on May 13, 1993, 33 years ago today.

Elton John - 1993-09-06 - Foxboro, MA (SBD) 

Elton John's only appearance at Farm Aid in 1990 is notable for more than just his support of America's family farmers. Elton, along with Farm Aid founder and Indiana native, John Mellencamp, was also a loyal supporter of Ryan White, an Indiana teenager who had contracted AIDs. In April 1990, Elton was in Indiana at Ryan's bedside, as the teenager's health had grown worse. He briefly left Ryan on April 7, 1990 to perform at Farm Aid, which just happened to be in Indiana that year. During his Farm Aid set, Elton dedicated Candle In The Wind to Ryan. Just a day, later, Ryan passed away at age 18.

This soundboard recording captures Sir Elton 3 years after his Farm Aid appearance, on September 6, 1993, 32 years ago today.  Elton was performing in support of another good cause as part of a benefit concert to preserve Walden Woods, the site of Henry David Thoreau's two-year study of philosophy and natural systems chronicled in his book, Walden.

Jerry Garcia's williness and desire to play music with artists who crossed a broad spectrum of styles is evidenced by his connections to Sting, the former front man for a new wave band! In spring 1993, Sting agreed to be the lead in band for the Dead’s summer tour, playing 11 stadium shows. During that run, Jerry Garcia sat in with Sting on 4 occaisons,  lending his guitar work to Walking On The Moon, Tea In The Sahara, Consider Me Gone, and Been Down So Long. During that run, Garcia advised Sting to "Go out there and push your limits, because these people (the Deadheads) are gonna listen to you." During a joint interview with Jerry and Sting for Rolling Stone at the the Four Seasons Ritz Carlton (side note - kind of ironic that a San Francisco hippie an an English punk rocker would one day be at Ritz Carlton) Garcia said of Sting, “Everybody knows he’s a wonderful musician and a truly fine person, too. It’s nice that we get to meet him, hang out with him a little bit and sort of . . . network a little with him. We share interests, and I think there’s stuff that we could do together in the hypothetical future that would be fun for him and for us." Sting who playfully nicknamed Garcia "Father Christmas", explained his decision to work with Jerry and the Grateful Dead as follows: "I want to see this Deadhead phenomenon. I want to see it first hand. I've never supported anyone in my career. It's so off the wall, such a crazy idea. Hell, let's do it."

Joan Osborne - 1993-08-20 - Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ (SBD)

Joan Osborne never got to know Jerry Garcia, but she most certainly built relationships with other members of the Grateful Dead. In 2003, she toured with The Dead, adding her vocals to those of Bob Weir and Phil Lesh.  In 2005 and 2006, she continued her association with Lesh, playing numerous shows with Phil and Friends. Often times in those collaborations, she'd take lead vocal on Garcia tunes, such as Stella Blue and Sugaree.  All that time singing Garcia tunes gave her a vast appreciation for the the man's catalog of songs, his vocals, and his prowess on guitar.  So much so, that in 2022, in honor of Jerry's Birthday, she played a series of concerts where she performed his music, one of which we posted back in October 2024. 

This soundboard recording captures Joan both before  Jerry passed and she hit it big with the tune One Of Us, peforming at the legendary Stone Pony on August 20, 1993, 32 years ago today.

Festival poster not only listed all the partcipating bands -  Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd, The Samples, Widespread Panic, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and Allgood - but also made note of the fact that the tour would include "special guests".  Well, they weren't kidding as on July 31, 1993, 32 years ago today, during the stop in Stowe, the Allman Brothers Band dropped in! He was a a member of the inaugural class voted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986,  alongside such legends as Elvis Presley, Check Berry, Buddy Holly, James brown, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, The Verly Brothers, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.  He had 11 top 10 singles in the 1950s/60s including Ain't That A Shame (#10), I'm In Love Again (#3), Blueberry Hill (#2), I'm Walkin (#4), Blue Monday (#5), Valley Of Tears (#8), It's You I Love (#6), Whole Lotta Loving (#6), I Want to Walk You Home (#8), Be My Guest (#8) and Walking to New Orleans (#6).  He was an influence on the biggest names in rock, including Elvis, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.  He is the one and only Antoine "Fats" Domino, whose melding of R&B, New Orleans sounds, boogie woogie and rock & roll made him one of the musical legends of the 20th century.  This FM broadcast, captures him late in his career, on one of his last tours outside the US, at the Montreux Jazz festival in Switzerland on July 14, 1993, 32 years ago today.

Since 1976 through today, The North Sea Jazz Festival has been held annually on the second weekend of July in the Netherlands. Originally held in The Haugue, the festival moved to Rotterdam in 2006 after the demolition of the Statenhal venue. 1990s - #4: On February 18 1993, Paul McCartney launched his New World Tour, which stretched until December and saw Sir Paul, wife Linda, Paul "Wix" Wickens, Blair Cunningham, Robbie McIntosh, and Hamish Stuart visit North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. McCartney was touring in support of his latest album, Off The Ground, so the set list featured 6 songs from the disc - Hope of Deliverance, Peace In The Neighborhood, C'mon People, Biker Like An Icon, Looking For Changes and the title track. The new tunes, however, were not the reason thousands of people flocked to these concerts. No, most folks, like my wife and I , who saw Sir Paul during this tour on June 11, 1993 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, went to hear the "cute Beatle" reach into his illustrious past. We were not disappointed. From the opening Drive My Car to the closing Hey Jude, over half the set list was dedicated to Beatle tunes. Throw in a few Wings classics such as Band On The Run, Live And Let Die, My Love and the rarely played Another Day, and tit was a night to remember. We didn't have the best seats -- not sure if there is any such thing as a good seat in a 60,000 seat stadium - but it hardly nattered. We knew every note and sang every word, knowing this was as close to the Beatles as we would ever get. And who knew at the time that it would be another 9 years before Paul would again tour. This soundboard recording captures the soundcheck from the La Vegas stop on the tour on April 14, 1993, 32 years ago today.
