1960s - #1: Founded in 1957, Memphis-based Stax Records was synonymous with Southern Soul - a distinctive blend of funk, gospel and R&B that brought listeners across America together at a time of racial conflict and political unrest. From humble beginnings in a garage the label went on to produce some of the greatest soul artists: Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and Sam and Dave, to mention a few/ About 10 years after the label's founding, there was a huge surge of interest in soul music in Europe. The label realized this and sent the Stax Revue to tour Europe in the summer of 1967. As was typical for the times,, instead of having individual acts doing perform their own shows,, the tour featured a host of artists from the label performing short sets on the same bill.  This sounboard recording capturs the Stax Volt Revue, headlined by Otis Redding and Same & Dave, in Oslo, on April 7, 1967, 57 years ago today.  NOTE - thanks to where this was originally shared - Albums That Should Exist.

2002 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2002-03-18 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2002 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class was another that featured the punk/new wave era as The Ramones, Tom Petty and Talking Heads were all inducted. With Joey Ramone having passed away about a year earler, The Ramones decided not to perform, but Green Day played a set of their classics. For Talking Heads, it was their first live performance as a band since 1989.  Unlike when the Hall inducted Springsteen and forgot the E-Street Band, Petty and the Heartbreakers got in together, and played a 2 song set.

1992 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1992-01-15 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

Unlike other years, the 1992 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony had no drama to overshadow the honoress or the muisc.  Both Neil Young and the Iseley Brothers played tunes in honor of the late, great Jimi Hendrix, while Santana played I Love You Too Much in honor of promoter Bill Graham.  And the Hall got something right by inducting the Man In Black, Johnny Cash, who played Big River and traded guitar licks with the likes of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page of The Yardbirds.

1979 - According to their Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame bio, Sam & Dave (Sam Moore & Dave Prater) were the most successful soul duo in music history and brought the sounds of the black gospel church to pop music with their call-and-response records. In the 1960s, primarily recording at Stax Records in Memphis, they produced a string of soul classics including Hold On, I'm Comin', You Don't Know Like I Know, I Thank You, When Something is Wrong with My Baby, Wrap It Up, and of course, Soul Man, a tune that climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard charts.  While the duo has their ups an downs in the early 1970s, including splitting up at one point, they saw a resurgence in interest in their music in 1979, after John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, in their Blues Brother's personas released a cover version of Soul Man. This soundboard recording captures Sam and Dave that very year, performing at My Father's Place in Rosyln, on December 7, 1979, 42 years ago today.  By the way, as part of their 1979 comeback tour, they even led in for The Clash at several shows!

This FM broadcast captures the duo in Sweden on May 2, 1967, 52 years ago today, as part of the Hit the Road Stax Tour in Europe, which included Booker T & the MGs, The Mar-Keys, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas, Arthur Conley and headliner Otis Redding.  According to legend, although Redding headlined the tour, many agreed Sam & Dave stole the show on many nights. Per Phil Walden, who managed both acts,  Redding refused to be booked on the same bill with Sam & Dave again, not wanting to have to follow their explosive act.
