Bruce Springsteen - 1985-09-01 - East Rutherford, NJ (Ex Aud)

1985: On June 29, 1984, Bruce Springsteen launched the Born In The USA tour in support of the album of the same name, a 156 show extravaganza that ran until October 5, 1985. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the top 10 for the duration if the entire tour. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ grade, ranking it as the best disc of 1984. Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review, and would eventually rank it as #85 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. The video for Dancing In The Dark, the first single from the album, received extensive airplay on MTv which helped propel it to the #2 position on the Billboard singles charts. In all, the album would yield seven top 10 singles. The tour, which featured Nils Lofgren on guitar in place of Miami Steve Van Zandt, who had left the E-Street Band to pursue a solo career. The 1985 portion of the tour saw Springsteen visit Asia, Australia and Europe, before returning to the US to play his first American outdoor stadium shows, including 6 shows in August at Giants Stadium in his home state of New Jersey.  I had tickets for the August 30th show, but due to a tremendous rain storm that concert had to be moved until September 1.  This excellent audience recording captures that rescheduled show, which toook place 41 years ago today, a 30 song marathon that included Santa Claus Is Coming To Town to end the night! Chistmas came early for all of us at Giants Stadium that night!

Working with Phi Collins, he released the album, Behind The Sun, in March 1985, which was a huge improvement of his previous effort, 1983’s Money and Cigarettes. It was also his first album after spending time in rehab for his addiction to alcohol. Fueled by the single Forever Man, which received extensive play both on radio and on MTV, Behind The Sun climbed into the top 40 on the Billboard charts. The album also yielded the single, She's Waiting, which was included as part of EC’s set at Live Aid in July 1985. That Live Aid appearance, which also included White Room and Layla, showed the world a healthy and rejuvenated Slowhand, who could still play with the best of them. This soundboard captures EC on July 17, 1985, 41 years ago today, in Los Angeles on toour in support of Behind The Sun. GD 1985 - Back To Back - #1: In 1985, the Grateful Dead celebrated their 20th anniversary. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 1980s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1987 or 1989. I tend to lean in the direction that 1985 provided many inspired moments, especially during the Spring/Summer run, though it’s clear that by year's end, Jerry was mired deep in a cloud of drugs which would eventually contribute his near death coma in 1986. This soundboard recording from Ventura from July 13, 1985, 41 years ago today, showcases some of that inspiration, as the band opens the show with a surprising duo of One More Saturday Night that segues into Fire On The Mountain. 1980s - #3: On June 4, 1984, Bruce Springsteen released Born In The USA, an album which took him far beyond his traditional fan base in terms of tone, sound and commercial appeal. Filled songs about every day Americans doing their best in the face of hardship, acknowledging that the American Dream was far from perfect, Born In The USA saw Springsteen take a political tone for the first time in his music. The album also was his first deliberate attempt to write a popular hit song, and he succeeded beyond even his wildest expectations. The first single from the disc, Dancing In The Dark (notable for Courtney Cox’s appearance in the video dancing with Bruce), went to #2 on the Billboard charts. Six other tunes from Born In The USA would also crack the top 10. The album itself went to #1, and garnered Springsteen 3 Grammy Award nominations. The disc also featured Springsteen’s first use of a synthesizer in his music, another bow to the current trends in pop music. Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau giving it a grade of A+ and the Village Voice awarding it album of the year. Bruce launched a massive 15 month tour in support of the album, playing 156 show on 4 continents. 1980s - #2: In January 1985, the Go-Gos played 2 shows at the first Rock In Rio, on January 13 and January 18.  The concerts were the debut and swan song for new member Paula Jean Brown, who had replaced Jane Wiedlin (Weidlin had left to pursue solo initiatives but would return to the band for its various reunions in the 1990s and beyond). Soon after the festival, the Go-Go's broke up, though they would reunite on countless occasions over the next 40 years!  This TV soundboard recording captures the first on their 2 perfromances, on January 13, 1985, 41 years ago today.

On September 3, 1977, me, my buddies and, along with 150,000 others, made the pilgrimage to Englishtown NJ, to see the Grateful Dead for the first time at what be the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter. Another performance that added to the legend of 1977. I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as over a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 3 decades since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic.

This soundboard recording captures the Grateful Dead across the Bay Bridge from their home turf in San Francisco, at the oakland Coliseum on Dececmber 30, 1985, 40 years ago today. Those of you have been long time visitors to So Many Roads know that Marshall Crenshaw is one of my favorite rockers, a musician whose talents, unfortunately, have simply never been appreciated by the masses. Famed critic Robert Christgau has heaped praise on Crenshaw’s first two albums, calling them perfect - go here to read the review. Trust him - he’s knows of what he speaks! Unfortunately, I've only gotten to see Crenshaw once, at the famed Maxwell's in Hoboken back in October 1996. I was supposed to see him again in March 2020 at the Stanhope House in New Jersey, but COVID cancelled that and its never been rescheduled.

In any event, this WMMR-FM broadcast captures Crenshaw in Philadephia on December 20, 1985, 4 decades ago today.  A big thanks to draftervoi at Voodoo Wagon for this one!

Don Henley participated in the inaugural Farm Aid in 1985, as well as in the 1990 edition of the concert. 

This soundboard recording captures Henley right before that initial Farm Aid appearance, in Los Angeles on September 4, 1985, 4 decades ago today. He was on tour in support of his 1984 album Building The Perfect Beast, the 2nd solo disc of his career. The album climbed to #14 on the Billboard charts, propelled by the single Boys Of Summer, which reached the #5 position. Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. This post features 2 of the most memorable performances of the day, by U2 and Queen. U2's set established them as rock superstars, while Queen's performance has often been ranked as one of the greatest live moments in rock history. This post also includes sets from Elton John, with both Kiki Dee and George Michael; Santana, with Pat Metheny; the Who in their first show since their 1982 farewell tour, and Ashford & Simpson, with a wheel chair bound Teddy Pendergrass making his first public appearance since the car accident that left him paralyzed. When Bob Geldorf organized an effort in late 1984 to recruit an all star cast of rock stars to record a charity single to raise money to address the famine in Ethiopia, he had little idea what idea would eventually transpire. Band Aid's recording of Do They Know Its Christmas would eventually evolve into one of the largest charity initiatives in history, the world wide concert held on July 13, 1985, 4 decades ago today, known as Live Aid. Billed as the "global jukebox", the Live Aid festival was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, with 72,000 in attendance, and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia,, with a crowd of about 100,000 people. On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were also held in other countries, such as Australia and Germany . It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time, as estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched Live Aid. Over 50 different rock artists performed for over 16 hours between the 2 concerts at Wembley and Philadelphia, making it one of the largest and longest single day rock festivals in history. After years of searching, I finally found a complete FM recording of the entire show, from July 13, 1985, 40 years ago today, which had originally been broadcast on the BBC and ABC radio networks, as well as televised on MTV and ABC. We're presenting it today in 3 posts, which encompass over 15 cds worth of music. The posts run in chronological order, from the opening notes at Wembley to the closing song at JFK. Normally, I post the entire set list, but the song list is so long for this show, that it won't fit in the post. So I just listed all the artists and you can find the set lists on the artwork. This post features the early portion of the show, including such artists as Status Quo, Joan Baez, Elvis Costello, The Four Tops, Black Sabbath (with Ozzy!), Sting and Phil Collins, who would be the only artist to play on both sides of the Atlantic at Live Aid. Also featured are musicians from Australia, Japan, Austria, and Yugoslavia. Live Aid may have been the first true multi-national rock festival, with performers from all across the globe, and from countless musical genres, uniting for one common cause. 1980s - #3: For a brief moment in the summer of 1985, Katrina & The Waves were on top of the rock world as the single Walking On Sunshine climbed the charts, cracking the top 10.  The band would turn out to be a one hit wonder, though another of their songs became a staple for another female band! .The tune Going Down To Liverpool, written by Katrina & The Waves, was the 2nd single released by The Bangles from their debut album, All Over The Place. This FM broadcast captures Katrina &The Waves at the height of their popularity in Washington DC on May 16, 1985, 4 decades ago today.
