Bruce Springsteen - Double Play 1973 - #2: In January 1973, Bruce Springsteen released his debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park, a title which paid tribute to his Jersey Shore roots. Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau writing “This boy has a lot more of the Dylan spirit than John Prine. His songs are filled with the absurdist energy and heart on sleeve pretension that made Dylan a genius instead of a talent.” The record buying public, however, was far less impressed. The album sold only 25,000 copies in its first year of release, and neither single, Spirts in The Night nor Blinded By The Light, dented the Billboard charts. In fact, the latter tune wouldn’t become a chart success until Manfred Man re-recorded it in 1977 and took the tune all the way to #1. Unduanted by the lack of commercial success, Springsteen went out on the road, playing small clubs across the US. This soundboard recording captures him on July 31, 1973, 45 years ago today, during the early show at My Father’s Place in Roslyn NY, across the river from his Jersey home. Bruce Hornsby 1996 - Double Play - #1: Bruce Hornsby, who was full time member of the Dead from 1990 to 1992 had a long history with the band both before and after his time with them. For example, he served as their led-in band at Laguna Seca in May 1987, at the Rain Forest Benefit in 1988 and at several summer shows in 1989. He came back to sit in with the Dead several times in 1993, 1994 and 1995. After Jerry Garcia’s death, Hornsby was part of the 1996 and 1997 Further Festival collection of bands with links to the Dead, which also included Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, and Hot Tuna, just to name a few. Today we bring you the first of 2 posts from Hornsby’s 1996 Further Festival appearances, a soundboard recording from Venetta from July 28, 1996, 18 years ago today. Grateful Dead - Double Play -1972 - #1: For the Grateful Dead, the year 1972 will always be remember for the band's incredible tour "across the pond", which initially spawned the triple live album, Europe 72, and later an archival release of every single show of the run! When the Dead returned from Europe and hit the road again in the US, they continued their fiery playing.  They did a short tour of the Pacific Northwest in late July, the first 2 of which from July 21 and 22, were also officially released. Eric Clapton - 1974-07-23 - Denver CO (SBD)

The year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to number 1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. This soundboard captures EC in Landover on July 14, 1974, 37 years ago today. Listen carefully and you’ll notice Slowhand sounds a bit sloshed, as a new demon had replaced his addiction to heroin, a growing dependency on alcohol. Bruce Hornsby 1996 - Double Play - #1: When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. Paul McCartney - 2009-07-15 - Ed Sullivan Theatre, NY (TV Audio)

On July 17, 18 and 21, Paul McCartney played 3 shows at Citi Field in New York, the first concerts held in the building which replaced Shea Stadium.  McCartney's link to Shea, and its successor, is the stuff of legends.  When the Beatles played Shea on August 15, 1965, they bacame the first rock band to ever play in a sports stadium, and in doing so changed the concert scene forever.  Then on July 18,  2008, Sir Paul joined Billy Joel during the last concert ever played at Shea Stadium, singing I Saw Her Standing There and then,  Let It Be, which would be the final tune ever played in that building. Two days before those historic firts concerts at Citi Field, however, on July 15, 2009, 5 years ago today, McCartney played an unusual warm up at another location which held memories for the former Beatle. Sir Paul and his band set up shop on the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater, the very same theater where the Beatles made their US television debut in February 1964, one of the most watched moments in the history of TV.  This TV audio of that performance, which stopped traffic on the Upper West Side of NYC, captures Sir Paul's 7 song set in its entirety.

Bruce Hornsby 1997 - Double Play - #1:When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures Hornsby's set at the Further Festival on July 12, 1997, 17 years ago today. Bruce demonstrates the free flowing improvisational flair which was becoming more and more a part of his shows in the late 1990's. He also pays tribute to his fallen comrade, Jerry, playing Across the River, a Hornsby tune which featured some blistering Garcia guitar work, and Black Muddy River, a Grateful Dead tune that found a regular place in Hornsby's set list for years to come. David Bowie - Daily Double 1983 - #1: On April 14, 1983, David Bowie released the album Lets Dance, which had been co-produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic. The album reached the number #4 position on the Billboard charts in the US, while climbing all the way to number 1 in the UK. The title track hit the top spot on the charts on both sides of the Atlantic! Two other singles, Modern Love and China Girl, were top 20 hits in the US, with both climbing to the #2 spot on the British charts. The album also featured guitar work from a then unknown Stevie Ray Vaughn! Videos for Lets Dance and China Girl received extensive airplay on MTv, helping build the then just 2 year old network while introducing Bowie to a whole new generation of fans. By 1983, Bowie had emerged as one of the most important video artists of the day. In May, Bowie launched the Serious Moonlight Tour in support of Lets Dance, which encompassed 96 shows before it ended in December. This FM Broadcast captures Bowie during that tour on July 12, 1983, 31 years ago today, his firts of back to back nights in Montreal, Canada. Paul McCartney - Double Play 2011 - #1: On July 17, 18 and 21, Sir Paul McCartney became the first musical act to perform at Citi-Field, the newly built home of the New York Mets. Sir Paul’s run was only fitting, since it was the Beatle’s who played the first concert at Shea Stadium, the predecessor to Citi-Field. Highlights from the run were eventually released on the CD/DVD package entitled Good Evening New York City. Just a few days prior to his Citi-Field stint, Sir Paul opened the tour in Halifax, Canada on July 11, 2009, 5 years ago today.
