Led Zeppelin - 1971-08-31 - Orlando, FL (SBD + AUD) 

On August 7, 1971, Led Zeppelin launched a brief 24 show tour of the US and Canada. The run was notable for featuring the North American debuts of songs from the soon to be released album Led Zeppelin IV, including Black Dog, Going To California, and of course, Stairway to Heaven. When the album was released a few months later in November, it instantly became a landmark commercial and critical success.  This recording features a mix of soundboard, audience and matrix tracks from Led Zep’s concert on August 31, 1971, 46 years ago today, in Orlando.  While not every track sounds perfect, a Led Zep show from 1971 just has too much historic and musical value not to be part of your collection.

September's Theme At So Many Roads

In honor of the fact that I saw my first Dead concert 4 decades ago this September - the legendary, officially released 9/3/1977 show from Englishtown NJ, our September theme is a very simple one; The Grateful Dead.

We'll bring all the following in September:

1. a host of Grateful Dead shows from Madison Square Garden , all of which I attended, from 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991 & 1993
2. solo shows from Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bruce Hornsby & Robert Hunter
3. shows from artists associated with the Grateful Dead in some way - some will be obvious (think Bob Dylan or The Allmans) and some less so (you'll be surprised!), but in some fashion, the posted bands will have a connection to the Dead.

Elton John - 1995-08-30 - Maryland Heights, MO (SBD)

In 1975, Elton John just might have been the most successful rock and roll star in the world. That year he released the first album to ever debut at number 1 on the Billboard Charts,(Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy), had 3 number singles, appeared in the hit movie Tommy, and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine. Twenty years later, in 1995, Elton, in many ways, was still at the top of the entertainment world. In March, he received his first Grammy Award, for best male vocalist for the single, Can You Feel The Love Tonight from the soundtrack of the movie, The Lion King. That tune also won an Oscar for best song from a motion picture. Just a few years later, his work scoring the film would translate into success on Broadway, when the Lion King was adapted for the stage. Later that month, he released the album Made In England, which spawned the top ten hit, Believe. In the spring, he and fellow "piano man" Billy Joel launched the wildly successful Face to Face tour. Then, in early summer, Elton, with a full band, went on a world wide tour in support of the new album that lasted until December. This soundboard captures Elton on one of the US legs of that tour, on August 30, 1995, 22 years ago this very day. The show features his Grammy/Oscar winning song, tunes from the new album, some rare older songs such as Dixie Lilly and Come Down In Time, as well as many of the classics that put him at the top of the charts 20 years earlier.

In May 1992, Carlos Santana released Milago, his 16th studio album. Milagro, which means "miracle" in Spanish, was dedicated to the lives of Miles Davis and Bill Graham, both of whom passed away in late 1991. Unfortunately for Carlos, the album became his first not to chart in the Billboard Top 100. The 1990’s were a difficult time for Santana, as his commercial appeal was at its absolute lowest point. That would not change until the last year of the decade, when he returned to the top of the charts with the album Supernatural and the single Smooth. Despite the lack of commercial success for Milago, Carlo went on tour that summer, with Phis as his support act. This soundboard matrix captures Santana on August 29, 1992, a quarter century ago today, in Mountain View, with memebers of Phish sitting in on several songs.

For a group that had played their supposedly "Last Waltz" in 1976, The Band continued to be a vibrant force in rock into the late 1990s. In 1993, they released the album Jericho, which included a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. In 1994 they played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped that year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band This soundboard recording captures The Band a year later, in Schwenksville, on August 27, 1995, 22 years ago today.

Grateful Dead - 1971-08-26 - Bronx, NY (SBD)

Today, Gaelic Park in the Bronx is part of Manhattan College, serving as the home for the school's soccer, lacrosse and softball games.  In the early 1970s, however, the park was home for rock and roll. In the summer of 1971, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, Kate Taylor, Johnathan Edwards, Black Sabbath and the Grateful Dead all palyeed shows at Gaelic Park, for just $5 a ticket. The following year brought the Allman Brothers, along with Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, Humble Pie, Yes and Blue Oyster Cult. This soundboard recording captures the Dead's concert in Gaelic Park on August 26, 1971. 46 years ago today. By the way, portions of the August 23 show were released on Road Trips Volume 1, #3 while the entire August 24 show was released on Dick's Picks 35, so you know the band was in top form around this time.

Steely Dan - 1993-08-22 - Saratoga, NY (SBD)

After an Independence Day concert in Santa Monica in 1974, Steely Dan retired from touring to focus on studio recordings. Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had tired of the grind associated with live performing and preferred to focus on song writing and album production.After producing 4 more albums (Kati Lied, The Royal Scam Aja & Gaucho) between 1975 and 1980, Becker and Fagan announced a split in their partnership in June 1981. It would be another 12 years before the two would formally reunite, ironically, to produce 2 solo albums. Becker produced Fagan’s album Kamakiriad, while Fagan returned the favor by serving as co-producer on Becker’s 11 Tracks of Whack. Even more irony followed, as the two then reformed Steely Dan, not to record an album, but to go on tour! With Becker now mainly playing lead and rhythm guitar, they put together a band that included an additional keyboard player, another lead guitarist, a bassist, three female backing singers, and a four-piece saxophone section. While their 2 solo albums didn’t sell all that well, their live concerts received rave reviews. This soundboard recording captures the band on August 22, 1993, 2 dozen years ago today.

Chicago - 1976-08-21 - Kalamazoo, MI (SBD)

Any time I post Chicago from the mid 1970s, it reminds me of high school. You see, my high school classs debated between calling our Senior Prom either Harmony (after the Elton John song) or Colour My World (inspired by Chicago's tune). I believe Harmony won out, but as the Wikipedia entry on Colour My World states, the tune "became a popular "slow-dance" song at high school proms and university dances during the 1970s." My prom was no exception. In any event, this soundboard recording from August 21, 1976, 41 yeasrs ago today, captures Chicago in the band's prime, prior to the tragic death of guitarist and vocalist Terry Kath. Chicago's reputation as a rock band was sullied in the 80's and 90's as the group veered more and more into soft rock ballads. Download this show and you'll be reminded that at one point in their career, Chicago was a damn fine rock and roll band.

In June 1981, The Go Go's released the single, We Got The Beat, and the accompanying video became a mainstay on the then fledgling MTV channel. A month later, the band released the album Beauty and The Beat, which steadily climbed the charts until it reached the top spot, where it remained for 6 weeks. The Go Go's had taken the music world by storm, and made history in the process. Beauty and The Beat became the first album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts. Today the disc is recognized as one of the cornerstones of the new wave movement. This FM broadcast captures them during those heady days on August 20, 1981, 3 dozen years ago today in Boston.

It was billed as an Aquarian Exposition (this is the dawning of the age of Aquarius), as 3 days of Peace and Music. It became 4 days of Peace, Music and Mud and closed the NY Thruway. As the song says, by the time “we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong, and everywhere was a song and a celebration”. The anti-war, hippie, flower power, anti-establishment counter cultural revolution that was brewing among the youth of America was on full display at Yasgur’s Farm. More than anything, it was the moment that defined a generation, and continues to resonate with people over 40 years later. Michael Lang, one of the four young men who produced the festival, once said "That's what means the most to me – the connection to one another felt by all of us who worked on the festival, all those who came to it, and the millions who couldn't be there but were touched by it." The festival also featured just the 2nd concert by of one of the first super groups in rock, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (the other candidate for the title of first super group was Blind Faith, who debuted just a little bit earlier in 1969). This soundboard captures CSNY’s set on August 17, 1969, 48 years ago today, at the most legendary festival in rock history.

Every now and then, especially in the midst of summer, we like to bring you some reggae music here at So Many Roads. Today, we have the legendary Jimmy Cliff, whose album the Harder They Come, which helped introduce reggae to mainstream audiences in the 1970s. This soundboard captures Jimmy at Woodstock 1994 on August 14, 1994, 23 years ago this very day. By the way, this concert celebrated  the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock Festival.  It was was originally scheduled for August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. U2 - 1992-08-13 - Giants Stadium, NJ (SBD/Matrix)

When U2 launched its 1992 Zoo TV tour in support of its latest album, Actung Baby, they did so in grandiose fashion. In contrast to the austere stage setups from their previous tours, the Zoo TV Tour was an elaborately staged multimedia event. The stage featured dozens of large video screens that showed visual effects, random video clips, and flashing text phrases. The band incorporated live satellite link-ups, channel surfing, and crank calls, including trying to call President Bush, into each performance. Eleven cars - German made Trabants to be exact - hung from cranes over the stage. It was an incredible audio/visual cavalcade of effects designed to parody the media over exposure in a world where cable TV and the Internet reigned supreme. It truly was one of the most amazing stage shows ever created for a rock performance. Unfortunately, despite being in attendance for the U2 show at Giants Stadium on August 13, 1992, 25 years ago today, my only exposure to this incredible multimedia extravaganza is what I read about it. You see, our seats were to the side of the stage. In fact, they were so far to the side, that we basically saw some large support poles that held up all of the equipment!  So, if you download and listen to this soundboard matrix from that show, you'll basically have the same experience we had! You'll hear the music, but you'll need to imagine what was transpiring on stage!

Counting Crows - 2008-08-12 - Saratoga, NY (SBD)

I was a big fan of the Counting Crow's 1993 debut album, August & Everything,  which featured the tunes Rain King, Mr. Jones and Round Here.  While I wasn't quite as enamored with their follow up work, I got back into listening to them recently when I heard some live tapes featuring their takes on Friend Of The Devil and Big Yellow Taxi. This soundboard recording captures the band playing their debut disc in its entirety on August 12, 2008, 9 years ago today, and a quarter century after the album was released.

Buffalo Springfield - 1967-08-11 - Huntington Beach CA (SBD)

As I've mentioned several times on this blog, quality recordings of Buffalo Springfield are next to impossible to find. In addition, the few you do come across always seem to be missing one member or another of the band, a reflection perhaps of the constant in fighting that eventually ripped the Springfield apart. This soundboard recording, from August 11, 1967, a half century ago this very day, in Huntington Beach, CA, is no exception. While original members Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Dewey Martin and Bruce Palmer were all present and accounted for, Doug Hastings sat in for Neil Young at this show, just as he had two months earlier at Monterrey Pop. Neil had left the band in early spring after a dispute with Stephen. Ironically, the next day, Buffalo Springfield had a 2nd show in Huntington, and Neil was back on stage, with the band unceremoniously dumping Hastings. Even without Neil, this is an historic recording, as it is one of the longest and best sounding shows available of this legendary, but short lived band. In 1987, Roy Orbison began working on a new album with former ELO front man turned producer Jeff Lynne. At the same time Lynne was completing production work on George Harrison's Cloud Nine, and all three had lunch one day when Orbison accepted an invitation to sing on a song of Harrison's. They contacted Bob Dylan, who allowed them to use a recording studio in his home. Along the way, Harrison had to stop by Tom Petty's house to pick up his guitar. Petty and his band had juts backed Dylan on his last tour. By that evening, the group had written Handle with Care, which led to the idea of recording an entire album. They called themselves the Traveling Wilburys, representing themselves as half-brothers with the same father. The disc, which would be released the following year, sold over 2 million copies and spent 53 weeks on the Billboard charts, peaking at #3. This soundboard recording captures Orbison on tour at just about 3 mionths before the Wilbury's would hit it big, on August 10, 1988, 29 years ago today.

Steve Miller - 1991-08-09 - Irvine, CA (SBD) 

Steve Miller was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1943. His parents were friends with guitar legend Les Paul, who encouraged young Steve’s interest in music. Miller later spent time in dallas, Chicago and New York, honing his guitar skills. By 1966, however, he had found his way to San Francisco, and became part of the twin music and cultural revolutions that emerged from the City By The Bay. Miller originally played the blues, but by 1973, his music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. His tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money and run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot. Miller continued to release successful albums and singles during the rest of the decade and into the early 1980s, but after the release of album Abracadabra in 1982 which went to #3 on the Billboard chars he never again had a major hit record.  He continued to tour relentlessly, however, and draws crowds to this day This soundboard recording captures miller about a decade after his last hit album, in Irvine CA on August 9, 1991, 26 years ago today.

Van Morrison - 1971-08-08 - San Anselmo CA (SBD) 

In the spring and summer of 1971, Van Morrison was in San Francisco, working on a new album, which would be entitled Tupleo Honey. He took a break from the recording studio to play this live set in nearby San Anselmo, on August 8, 1971, 46 years ago today.  By the way, some sources question the month and venue for this soundboard, but there's no doubt its an excellent recording of early Van The Man.
