Unfortunately, no tape of that seems to exist. That said, this FM Broadcast, which originally aired on May 13, 1963, captures most of second show, Long Tall Sally, A Taste of Honey, Chains, Thank You Girl, and Boys.  From Me To You, however, is missing from the tape.

After completing their concert tour of Sweden the night before, The Beatles returned to Stockholm on October 30, 1963, 55 years ago today, to record an appearance on the Sveriges Television music show Drop In. The recording took place in front of a studio audience at the Arenateatern, a small theater in Stockholm's Gröna Lund amusement park. The Beatles had intended to perform She Loves You and Twist And Shout on Drop In, but Klas Burling persuaded them to keep the audience happy and play one more song. They launched into I Saw Her Standing There, after which Kersti Adams-Ray attempted to start up the show's theme tune. The Beatles weren't finished, however. Burling managed to talk them into playing one more song to round off the show. They played Long Tall Sally, after which they joined in with hand claps for the Drop In closing theme.  This soundboard captures the entire show, and also includes an interview with Klaus Burling the following day.

Jerry Garcia - 1960s: Before there was a Grateful Dead, or the Warlocks, even a Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, there was simply Jerry Garcia, along with then wife Sara, playing a host of bluegrass and folk tunes at a coffee house in Palo Alto.  This soundboard recording from May 4, 1963, 53 years ago today, just may be the earliest know regarding of any Garcia performance.  Listen closely and you can hear elements of Gracia's future. Before one song he says "this is what you call tuning", a harbinger of the Dead's habit of tuning up between songs in the middle of a live show.  He plays Deep Elem Blues to open,a tune that was part of his and the Dead's repertoire right through the 1980s.  This one is a rare glimpse into a legend before he became one!

1960s - #4: The Town Hall in New York City was built by The League for Political Education, whose fight for passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution led them to commission the building of a meeting space where “people of every rank and station” could be educated on the important issues of the day. Town Hall was designed by to reflect the democratic principles of the League. Thus, box seats were not included while every effort was made to ensure that no seat had an obstructed view. This design principle gave birth to Town Hall's long-standing mantra: "Not a bad seat in the house." Located on 43rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, the 1500 seat Town Hall not only became a meeting place, but also one of the city’s premiere concert venues. For example, on April 12, 1963, 52 years ago today, Town Hall hosted a 21 year old Bob Dylan as he played his first major US concert. The 600 people in the audience was the largest crowd Dylan had played for at that point in his career. This soundboard recording captures every moment of that historic performance. As you listen, you’ll clearly hear a few moments of nervousness from Dylan. But you’ll also hear the sound that would soon revolutionize a generation, music with a message, fighting for civil rights while opposing war, sung in a less than perfect voice yet with crystal clear intent. Download this one to hear Dylan on the cusp of becoming the musical leader of a new generation.

1963 - In July 1963, the Beach Boys released their 2nd album entitled Surfin’ USA. The disc soared up the Billboard charts, climbing to #2. The album would stay on the charts for 78 weeks. The title track went to #3 on the charts. Incredibly, the band built on its success by releasing 2 more albums within the next few months. Surfer Girl hit record stores on September 16 and would climb to #7 on the charts. The disc yielded 3 top 25 singles, the title track at #7, Little Deuce Coup at #15 and In My Room at #23. Less than a month later, the Beach Boys released an album entitled Little Deuce Coop. The disc included 8 new sounds, but 4 tunes - the title track, Our Car Club, Shut Down and 409 - had all appeared on previous albums. Despite the redundancy, and the saturation of 3 albums in 4 months, the album Little Deuce Coop went to #4 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the Beach Boys right after the release of all 3 discs, live at the Hollywood Bowl on November 1, 1963, a half century ago today, Download this one to remember a time when surf, sand and hot rods dominated the airwaves!

In fall of 1963, Beatlemania was in full swing, as the band's first 2 UK albums, Please Please Me and With The Beatles, had gone to number 1 and stayed there for what seemed like an eternity, 30 weeks and 21 weeks respectively! Their initial single, the title track from their first album, only went to number 2 on the UK charts, but the 2 follow up releases, From Me To You and She Loves You, would both reach the top spot. So would I Want To Hold Your Hand, which would be released in late November 1963. On the heels of that success, the Beatles went on tour in October 1963, and while most of their dates were in their English homeland, they also ventured to Ireland, Scotland and Sweden. This FM broadcast captures their first show in Sweden, on October 24, 1963, 5 decades ago today, from Karlaplans Studios.  Download this one to hear the Beatles just a few short months before their historic performance on the Ed Sullivan show, when they would take America, and the world, by storm.

The Beatles/Bob Dylan Connection
  • Bob Dylan introduced The Beatles to smoking marijuana when they met for the first time on August 28, 1964. Dylan was surprised the Fab Four has never smoked. He had misunderstood the lyrics of I Want To Hold your hand, thinking that the line “I can’t hide, I can’t hide” was “I get high, I get high.”
  • In the wake of meeting Dylan, John Lennon made a conscious effort to write more introspective songs, with Norwegian Wood being the peak of his efforts to mimic Dylan’s style.
  • The Beatles, Stones and Dylan were all linked as part of the Masked Marauders hoax.
  • George Harrison and Dylan struck up a lifelong friendship, with the two of them playing together in the Traveling Wilburys.
  • Dylan played at Harrison’s Concert For Bangladesh on August 1, 1971 at Madison Square Garden.
  • Harrison played a cover of Absolutely Sweet Marie at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert in 1992. He also backed Dylan on My Back Pages and Knockin on Heaven’s Door. The show was his last ever live performance.
  • Dylan once said of Sir Paul, "I’m in awe of McCartney. He’s about the only one that I am in awe of. He can do it all. And he’s never let up... He’s just so damn effortless."
