I've seen Joe Jackson on 3 occasions - in February 1981, in August 1980 and then in October 1982. When I saw him that final time he was in the midst of making the transition from angry punk rocker to an artist playing tunes influenced by Cole Porter, jazz and big band music.

Today's post brings us more of later day Mr. Jackson, on tour in support of his labum Blaze Of Glory.  This excellent audience recording captures him in Berkeley on August 25, 1989, 37 years ago today.

I've always preferred Angry Joe, and this FM Broadcast captures him during those early punk days, in Amsterdam on June 17, 1979, 47 years ago today. Having finished his first US tour on June 1, 1979,  Jackson returned to Europe, playing dates in Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland and the UK in support of his debut album, Look Sharp. That disc had been released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US, in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She Really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did one better, reaching the #20 position.

In the Bible, you’ll find the Three Wise Men. In the bible of new wave music, you’ll find the Three Angry Young Men, Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. Jackson’s debut album, Look Sharp was released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She Really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did even one better, reaching the #20 position. Jackson arrived in the US for his first tour at just about the same time the album hit record stores. This FM broadcast captures him during that tour at the in Boston on May 25, 1979, 47 years ago today. Download this one to hear Angry Joe not only play tunes from Look Sharp, but also preview 2 songs (Friday and the title track) from his 2nd album, I’m The Man, which would be released later that year.

Joe Jackson 1980 - #2: As promised, here's the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entering featuring Joe Jackson in 1980. This one is an FM Broadcast from Boston from February 15, 1980, 46 years ago today. By the way, some confusion exists about this date. The download actually includes a 2nd copy of the show dated February 23.  Some sources say that February 23 was the broadcast date, with February 16 being the actual concert date. Others sources, however, indicate that the show was postponed from February 16 to February 23 because Joe was suffering from a sore throat. Whether February 16 or February 23 is correct, this concert features Angry Joe at his best.

Joe Jackson - 1980-02-15 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

Joe Jackson 1980 - #1: When Joe Jackson hit the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ on February 15, 1980, 46 years ago today, he was in full Angry Joe mode. He was touring in support of his first 2 albums, both released in 1979, Look Sharp and I'm The Man. And as I entered the theater for the show, I was hardly in a Valentine's Day mood. I was in the process of being dumped by a girlfriend, so I was ready for a defiant, edgy, punk, new wave performance.  And I got it.  Joe delivered a fiery set, propelled by Graham Maby's base, that included an unexpected cover of the Harder They Come!  Songs like Is She Really Going Out With Him and One More Time, delivered with reckless abandon, resonated perfectly with me. Download this soundboard recording of the show, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different show entry. `By the way, you can actually see the show here.

2000s - #2: In October 2000, Joe Jackson released the album, Night & Day II, a disc whose musical style mimicked that of 1982,'s Night & Day disc, his most commercially successful recording.  As with the original disc, the songs on Night & Day II were about life in New York City. Jackson went on tour in support of the album in November 2000, playing a dozen shows in North America, before launching th European leg of the tour in January 2001. This FM broadcast captures him in Hamburg on January 14, 2001, a quarter century ago today,

This FM Broadcast captures Jackson during this Cole Porter moment, in Boston, on December 9, 1982, 43 years ago today, right after the release of  the album, Night and Day. The disc went to #4 on the Billboard charts, Jackson’s only top ten album. The singles Steppin' Out" and Breaking Us In Two both were top 20 hits. Gentle Joe was clearly more chart friendly than his angry predecessor.

1980s - #6: Most artists, if they want to record a live album go on tour, record numerous shows, then compile the best tracks to release on record. Not Joe Jackson - he decided to do it the opposite way!  First, he played 6 shows in 3 nights in late January 1986 at the Roundabout Theater in New York City.  From those shows, he compiled the Big World album which was released on March and climbed to #34 on the Billboard charts. And then, he launched a world tour in support of Big World, that took him to Europe, North America, Australia, Asia and back to Europe!  This soundboard recording captures Joe during that tour, in Japan on October 21, 1986, 38 years ago today.

This soundboard recording from June 16, 1984, 39 years ago today, captures the former a ngry punk rocker in full "Sentimental Joe" mode  That year, Jackson continued to venture far from his new wave roots, releasing the album Body & Soul, an album drawing inspiration from jazz standards and salsa rhythms. The disc wen to number #20 on the Billboard charts in the US, and spawned a top 15 hit, You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want).

1990s - #6: To be blunt, I was less than happy when the Angry Joe Jackson of the late 1970s and early 1980s became Sentimental Joe with the release of songs like Stepping Out. I missed the unhappy, growling punk rocker behind songs such as I’m the Man, One More Time and Is She Really Going Out With Him.  Once Jackson moved from punk to Cole Porter, however, he was not headed back. His future albums included swing music, jazz,  and even attempts at classical composition, such as his 1994 disc, Night Music. In January 2019, Joe Jackson released his 19th studio album, entitled Fool.  Forty years earlier, in 1979. Jackson had burst on the music scene with not one but 2 album releases, Look Sharp and I'm The Man, as good a 1-2 debut punch as you may find in rock history. Of course, in those 4 decades, Jackson's style and music changed significantly, as he moved from punk and new wave to jazz to Cole Porter  and beyond! One thing stayed the same during that time, however, namely the man on bass, the one and only Graham Maby! This IEM recording captures Jackson on tour in support of Fool, in Italy on March 23, 2019, 2 years ago today.

1970s - #6: As I’ve mentioned in the past, in the Bible, you’ll find the Three Wise Men. In the bible of new wave music, you’ll find the Three Angry Young Men, Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. Jackson’s debut album, Look Sharp was released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US, in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did even one better, reaching the #20 position. He released his 2nd album I’m The Man, on October 5, 1979 That disc would go to #22 on the Billboard charts. While not quite the one two punch of Elvis Costello’s first 2 albums (My Aim Is True and This Year's Model), Jackson’s debut and follow up discs made it clear he would be a musical force in the years to come.  This FM broadcast captures Joe about 6 weeks after the release of I'm The Man, in London, on November 29, 1979, 41 years ago today.

Joe Jackson’s debut album, Look Sharp was released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US, in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did even one better, reaching the #20 position. Jackson arrived in the US for his first tour at just about the same time the album hit record stores. This FM broadcast captures him during that tour at his first concert in New York City at the legendary Bottom Line on April 21, 1979, 41 years ago today.

In June 1982, Joe Jackson, the angry punk rocker, surprised fans and critics alike when he released the album Night and Day. The disc paid tribute to the wit and wisdom of Cole Porter, and was far more piano driven than earlier albums such as Look Sharp and I'm The Man. The album went to #4 on the US charts, making it his only album to crack the top 5. The single Stepping Out, reached #6, and earned Jackson Grammy Nominations for Record of The Year and Best Male Vocalist. This FM broadcast from Hitchin from January 22, 1983, 75 years ago today, captures Jackson on tour in support of the Night and Day album.

I've been to 3 Joe Jackson concerts - in February 1980, in August 1980 and then in October 1982.  When I saw him that final time. he was in the midst of making the transition from angry punk rocker to a more mainstream artist. His album, Night and Day, released in June, was inspired by Cole Porter and featured, appropriately, more piano based tunes. The song Stepping Out became his only top 10 hit. This show from the World Music Festival on November 25, 1982, 37 years ago today, features that same transitional approach to his music.
