WCBS-FM 25th Anniversary Concert - 1997-04-26 - Radio City, NY, NY (FM)

In July 1972, WCBS-FM in New York abandoned its rock and roll format having lost the ratings war with WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM, and became one of the first stations in the US to adopt an "oldies" format.  That change proved to be ratings magic, and WCBS became one of the highest rated stations in New York for the next quarter century. WCBS celebrated 25 years as an oldies station with a concert, at Radio City Music Hall on April 26, 1997, 29 years ago today, with a concert that featured 5 performers who would all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

• Felix Cavaliere: Inducted just a few days after this concert as a member of The Rascals, who put aside years of differences to perform People Got To Be Free.  Other members of the class of 1997 included Buffalo Springfield, CSN, and Joni Mitchell.
• Ronnie Spector: Inducted in 2007 as a member of the Ronettes.  Other artists inducted that year included R.E.M, Patti Smith and Van Halen.
• Little Anthony & The Imperials: Inducted in 2009, alongside Jeff Beck, Metallica, and Run DMC, just to name a few.
• Dion Dimucci: Inducted in 1989, along with the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, and The Temptations.
• Frankie Valli: Inducted in 1990 as a member of the Four Seasons, along with The Who, Bobby Darin, The Four Tops, The Kinks, The Platters, Simon & Garfunkel, and Louis Armstrong, just to name a few. For the ceremony, the original lineup of the Four Seasons reunited for the first time since the mid-1960s and sang together for what would be the last time.  

The whole show, of course, was broadcast live on WCBS-FM! By the way, with the exception of a 2 years stint from 2005 to 2007 where the station featured the ill fated JACK-FM concept, the station has stayed true to its oldies format (though the songs now are more 1970s,1980s and 1990s than 1950s and 1960s) and continues to be one of the most listened to stations in the New York area.

So, how many of you knew that every year on July 4, Washington DC hosts a music festival that draws hundreds of thousands of people?  If you don't, its probably because its not billed as a festival, but rather as a celebration of America's Independence. Since 1980, (with the exception of 2020 & 2021 due to the COVID pandemic) A Capitol Fourth, a concert featuring dozens of musical guests that culminates in an extraordinay fireworks show,  has taken place from presented from the west lawn of the United States Capitol Building. The concert is broadcast on PBS, NPR and the American Forces Network. While the concert features such traditions as opening with te National Anthem, and closing with the National Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture with accompaniment from an Army artillery squad as a prelude to the fireworks, in between some of rock's finest have taken the stage over the years. Past performers have included John Fogerty, Smokey Robinson, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, Huey Lewis and the News, Jerry Lee Lewis, Neil Diamond, The Beach Boys, The Four Tops, and Belinda Carlisle, just to name a few.  This TV soundboard recording captures the one and only Frankie Valli at the 2014 concert, on July 4, 2014, 11 years ago today. Viet Nam Veterans Benefit Concert - 1987-07-04 - Landover, MD (FM)

On July 4, 1987, 32 years ago today, the Capitol Center in Landover MD, just down the road from Washington DC hosted a star studded concert to raise money for homeless Viet Nam veterans, as captured in this FM broadcast.  CSN, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more played this nationally televised event, which was entitled Welcome Home.  No performer, though had more of an impact than John Fogerty. According to the notes that accompanied this tape, during rehearsals, Fogerty played only solo material, as he was still in a dispute with his record company over his recordings with Creedence. When he hit the stage, he seemed intent on continuing to ignore his past, as the band began playing Old Man Down The Road. And then it happened, one of those magical moments that occur just once in a musical lifetime. Fogerty stopped, huddled up with his band mates, and then launched into Born on The Bayou! The rest of the set was all CCR classics, including Bad Moon Rising. Who’ll Stop The Rain, Down On The Corner and Proud Mary, just to name a few. From that show forward, CCR material would again grace every Fogerty concert! Interestingly, during his set, Fogerty made a heartfelt speech asking the Veterans in the audience and listening at home to let go their past, to move past the pain, and to move forward with th lives.  He may just as well as been talking about his own life! Folks forget, but in the 1960s and early 1970s, few artists had more chart success than Frankie Valli. First with the Four Seasons, and later as a solo artist, Frankie had 39 Top 40 hits. Of those, 7 songs reached number 1 on the Billboard Chart, including Sherry, Rag Doll, and Walk Like A Man. His last big hit of the 1960s was released just as the Summer of Love was dawning in June 1967.  The tune Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You went to #2 on the Billboard charts, held out of the top spot by Windy by The Association.  Frankie then would be out of the limelight for a few years after 1967, until a career resurgence in the mid 1970ss with hits such as My Eyes Adored You, Swearing To God, December 1963, and the title song to the movie Grease. This ALD recording captures Frankie 44 years after the summer of love, in Virginia on June 8, 2011, 6 years ago today.

The saga of the Four Seasons was turned into a Broadway play. Jersey Boys took Broadway by storm, winning 4 Tony awards, including best musical.
