Elton John - 2010-04-30 - Reading, PA (SBD)

2010s - #6: Elton John opened 2010 by partnering with Billy Joel on a Face to Face Tour, then closed the year on the road with another collaborator, Leon Russell.  In between, starting in April, he launched a tour with his regular backing band that took him to North America and Europe. The set list for those shows included just 1 new tune - Never Too Old, which would be featured on The Union album released later that year. The other 2 dozen songs each night were a greatest hits compilation from his long storied career. This soundboard recording captures Captain Fantastic during that 2010 tour, in Texas on April 24, 2010, 14  year ago today.

Six historic rock names who came together for all too brief a period to produce some of rock's finest music, only to break apart to spawn a dozen more rock legends. For a group that barely lasted 3 years, Buffalo Springfield has one of the most impressive legacies of any rock and roll band. Their 3 albums included such classics as Mr. Soul, Burned, Sit Down I Think I Love You, Bluebird, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, Special Care, Kind Woman and, of course, For What Its Worth. From the ashes of their break up arose such groups as CSN/CSNY, Poco, Loggins & Messina and Souther-Hillman-Furay band, not to mention the historic solo careers of Neil Young and Stephen Stills. 1980s - #6:  For David Crsoby, the year 1989 was quite an eventful one.  Early in the year, he found himself on the road with Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman reunited as The Byrds.  The tour was part of a failed effort to retain the rights to the name The Byrds, as courts sided against them and for another former Byrd, Michaleel Clark, in a series of legal disputes.  Late in the year, Crosby was back on the road with CSN, part of  tour to commerate the band's appearance 20 years prior, alongside Neil Young, at Woodstock.  In between, Crosby palyed a series of solo shows.  This FM broadcast captures him during that solo run, in Minnesota, on April 26, 1989, 35 years ago today.

2000 - #4: If you look at the page on this blog where I list all the concerts I've attended, (or peruse the countless lists in my book about all the shows I've seen), you won't see any mention of the Fabulous Holmes Brothers. That's because I saw them so many times, at so many different blues clubs in New York in the late 1980s that I lost count. For those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk." This soundboard recording captures the Holmes Brothers in Philadelphia on April 25, 2008, 16 years ago this very day.

1980s - #4:  The televison business is notorious for being a copycat industry.  The minute one network has a success, every other one seeks to imitate it. ABC's show Friday's was there unsuccsssful attempt to duplicate what NBC has done with Saturday Night Live. Launched in 1980, Friday's lasted just 2 years (SNL is still running, nearly 50 years after its launch in 1975!) but it did feature some excellent new wave and punk artists as musical guests.  This TV soundboard recording captures The Clash on Fridays on April 25, 1980, 44 years ago today.

1980s - #4:  For Eric Clapton, 1985 was a year in which he returned to world wide prominence. Working with Phi Collins, he released the album, Behind The Sun, in March 1985, which was a huge improvement of his previous effort, 1983’s Money and Cigarettes. Behind The Sun produced the hits Forever Man and She's Waiting. The former featured a devastating guitar solo reminiscent of Clapton’s days with the Dominoes and Cream, while the latter was included as part of EC’s set at Live Aid in July 1985. That Live Aid appearance, which also included White Room and Layla, showed the world a healthy and rejuvenated Slowhand, who could still play with the best of them. Clapton launched a world wide tour in support of Behind The Sun, which started and ended in Europe, with stops in the US, Canada and Japan in between.  This FM Broadcast captures him on the US leg of the tour, in Baltimore on April 23, 1985, 39 years ago today.

1960s - #5: In the late 1950s and early 1960s, The Everly Brothers (Phil & Don) had three #1 singles - Wake Up Little Suzie, All I Have To Do Is Dream, and Cathy's Clown - and another 3 that went to #2 - Bye Bye Love, Bird Dog, and Problems. Their vocal harmonies and dual acoustic guitar stylings influenced artists such as The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Beatles. In 2003-2004, The Everlys toured with Simon & Garfunkel, joining Paul and Art on stage for several songs midway through each show. McCartney referenced the duo in his hit Let Em' In, listing Phil and Don among the numerous folks knocking on the door. Greg Kihn - 1982-04-21 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

1980s - #3: When is a new wave post not a new wave post? When it includes Greg Kihn! When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, The Cars, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, and Nick Lowe, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new artist became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn was sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position.  This soundboard recording captures Kihn in San Francisco, on April 21, 1982, 42 years ago today.

2000s - #2: In April 2003, Tom Petty played a 5 night stand at the Vic Theater in Chicago.  As part of that run, Petty struck a deal with local radio station 93 XRT-FM which would allow the station to broadcast 1 song each of the first 4 nights, and then the complete concert on night 5. Petty's history with the station went all the way back to 1977, when they aired a double bill featuring him & the Heartbreakers as well as Elvis Costello and the Attractions.  Here's the FM broadcast of the closing night at the Vic on April 19, 2003, 21  years ago today.

2010 - #5: Joan Jett & The Blachearts entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, part of a class that inclued Ringo Starr, Bill Withers, Lou Reed, Green Day, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, and The Paul Butterfirled Blue Band.  Miley Cyrus made the induction speech and joined Joan for a rendition of Crimson & Clover, along with Dave Grohl.  The most impiortant guest on that tune, however, was Tommy James, who as leader of the Shondels took the song to #1on the Billboard Charts in 1968. This TV soundboard recording captures Joan, the Blackhearts and guests at the induction ceremony in Cleveland on APril 18, 2015, 9 years ago today.

2010s - #4: In 2015, Ringo Starr entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, after some extensive lobbying on his behalf by Sir Paul McCartney. That made the Beatles the first and only group to be inducted into the Hall Of Fame and have each of its members also inducted individually. (Note: all the members of CSNY were inducted into the Hall - twice each! - but the quartet was not.  See our March 15 post about the 2010 induction ceremony for more detail.)  Macca made the induction speech, then joined Ringo, along with Green Day, Joe Walsh, and Dave Grohl, for a 4 song set.  This TV soundboard recording captures that historic night when the 2 surviving Beatles were on stage together in Cleveland on April 18, 2015, 9 years ago today.

1980s - #2: In the summer of 1987, the movie La Bamba was released, telling the tale of Ritchie Valens rise to stardom and tragic death, along with Buddy Holly, in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Don McLean. Of course, immortalized that event as “the day the music died” in his classic tune, American Pie. During the movie’s closing credits, Lou Diamond Phillips, who played Valens in the movie, performed La Bamba, along with a then little known band Los Lobos. They would not be unknown for long. On June 30, 1987, their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and went to #1 on the Billboard charts. Then, just a week later, on July 7, Los Lobos released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. Songs such as The Hardest Time; One Time, One Night, River of Fools, Tears Of God, and The Mess We’re In, mixed rock, blues, country and tex-mex influences, with rhythms that could get you up dancing and lyrics that reached into your soul. If you don’t own it, you should. This FM Broadcast captures them about 10 months after their commercial and critical breakthrough, in Tokyo on April 17, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today.

Jerry Garcia (Old & In The Way) - 1973-04-16 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

1970s - #6: In early 1973, Jerry Garcia plunged into a new side-project, a bluegrass group called Old and in the Way, The band featured Garcia on banjo and vocals, John Kahn on string bass, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, and guitarist/singer Peter Rowan. Fiddler Richard Greene joined in April of 1973, but juggling his own band in LA, dropped out after a couple of months and was replaced first by John Hartford, and eventually by the legendary Vassar Clements. The band broke up due to fighting between Rowan and Grisman, but plans were in place for a comeback before Jerry’s tragic death in 1995. Old & In The Way would play 47 shows between January 1973 and April 1974.  This soundboard recording captures them in San Francisco on April 16 1973, a half century ago today!

2000s - #1: While the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11.This IEM Audience recording captures the band on tour in support of All That You Can't Leave Behind in Portland on April 15, 2001, 23 years ago today.

Lou Reed - 1978-04-14 - Chicago, IL (SBD)

1970s - #5: In 1978, in the midst of the punk rock revolution he helped inspire, Lou Reed released the album Street Hassle, a disc described as raw, wounded and unapologetic. Most of the early punk records could have been described in the same terms. Yet, at the time, Reed had little if any use for the punk scene. He was quoted as saying "I'm too literate to be into punk rock ... The whole CBGB's, new Max's thing that every one's into and what's going on in London—you don't seriously think I'm responsible for what's mostly rubbish?" Reed's comments show just how splintered rock and roll had become as the decade of the 1970s wound to a close. This soundbaord recording captures Lou during the Street Hassle tour on April 14, 1978, 46 years ago today, at the Park West in Chicago.

Bob Dylan - 1993-04-13 - Nashville, TN (SBD)

1990s - #4: During the early 1990s, Bob Dylan took a break from writing new songs. Instead, he focused on recording traditional folk songs that had influenced his musical style. In late 1992, he released the disc, Good as I Been to You, which included covers of 17 folk songs, He followed that with another album of traditional tunes in 1993, entitled World Gone Wrong. Both discs received positive critical reviews. For example, famed critic Robert Christgau gave a B+ grade To Good As I Been To You and an A- to World Gone Wrong. This soundboard recording captures Dylan on tour during that period, in Nashville on April 13, 1993, 31 years ago today. While the set list is filled with Dylan classics, about mid show he plays 2 tunes from Good As I Been To You, Tomorrow Night and Jim Jones.

Little Village - 1992-04-12 - Detroit MI (SBD)

1990s - #3: When John Hiatt recorded his breakthrough album Bring The Family in 1987, he did it in just 4 days week with the help of Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner. In 1992, the four reunited to record an album, calling themselves Little Village. Despite the star power, their self titled album met with little commercial or critical success. As Nick Lowe later said "Little Village was really good fun. Unfortunately, the record we did was no good. I suppose on some level, it worked, but Warner Brothers kind of gave us too much time to do it", referencing how the compressed time frame for Bring The Family had forced the foursome to be at their best! In any event, Little Village went on tour in support of the album in early 1992. This soundboard recording captures them on April 12 1992, 32 years ago today, in Detroit.
