Stevie Ray Vaughan & Buddy Guy - 1989-07-30 - Chicago, IL (SBD)

One final post this month dedicated to the great blues guitarists of the rock and roll era. Buddy Guy has been called the bridge between the blues and rock and roll. He is one of the historic links between Chicago electric blues pioneers Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf and rock  guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page , Keith Richards and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Vaughan once stated that "Without Buddy Guy, there would be no Stevie Ray Vaughan."   Guy was ranked At #30 in Rolling Stones 2003 list  of the top 100 guitarists and #23 on the magazine's 2011 list.  This soundboard recording captures Guy along with one of the men he inspired, Stevie Ray Vaughn on July 30, 1989, 28 years ago today.  Guy was cerebrating his 53rd birthda at his club, Legends, in Chicago and SRV showed up to wish him well!

Eric Clapton - 1976-07-29 - Hemel Hempstead, UK (SBD)

A day after we brought you Crossroads Festival 2007, we decided we should post another show from Eric Clapton.  After all, he may just be the man who helped invent the term Guitar God.  Back in 1965 - 1966, when EC was a member of  John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, the phrase “Clapton is God” was spray painted on a wall in the underground station in Islington The graffiti was captured in a now-famous photograph. In most rock fans minds. Clapton may have only been surpassed on guitar by Jimi Hendrix. Rolling Stone magazine ranked EC 4th n the 2003 list of the top 100 guitarists of all time and 2nd on their 2011 list, making Eric & Jimi the only 2 men to crack the top 5 on both lists. Clapton  is also the only man ever to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on 3 occasions - with the Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo artist.  And you can make a case he should be in two or three more times for his stints with The Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith and with Derek & The Dominoes.  This soundboard recording captures The man nicknamed GOD and SLOW HAND on July 29, 1976, 41 years ago today.

Here's our 4th post of the day, containing parts 7, 8 and 9 of the 2007 Crossroads Festival, from July 28, 2007, 2 decades ago this very day. First, Jeff Beck plays a sensational set, including a stunning reinvention of the Beatles’ A Day in the Life, in which he recreates all the elaborate vocal melodies and orchestrations with little more than the six strings of his guitar. Then, EC himself took the stage, for a set heavy on music from Derek and the Dominos. Derek Trucks sat in for the entire set, helping to push Clapton to be at his best. EC also got some help from Robbie Robertson for 2 songs, before reuniting with Blind Faith compatriot, Steve Winwood! And how fitting that they end their set with Crossroads! After that, Chicago blues Buddy Guy took the stage flowed by, and a 3 song finale by all the day's performers! A veritable legion of Guitar Gods all on stage at once!

Tedeschi Trucks Band - 2013-07-26 - Bridgeport, CT (SBD Matrix)

So exactly what hasn't Derek Trucks done as a guitarist? At age 13, he was on stage leading in for the Allman Brothers, playing the solo from Layla (go here for the video) By age 17, he had formed his own band and gone out of tour.  He later played with the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh &Friends and Eric Clapton.  In 2007, the same year he played at Clapton's Crossroads Festival, Trucks appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone for an article called the "New Guitar Gods,", highly appropriate given this month's theme. Today, he plays alongside wife Susan Tedeschi in the Tedeschi Trucks Band, whose performance in Bridgeport on July 26, 2013. 4 years ago today, is captured in this soundboard recording. By the way, Susan is no slouch on guitar either - check out her performance at Farm Aid if you want any proof.

Peter Frampton - 2016-07-26 - Charlotte NC (IEM Matrix)

When I decided on this month's theme of Guitar Gods, one of the first posts I picked out was this IEM Matrix recording of Peter Frampton from July 26, 2016, just a year ago today. After all, the 1976 album Frampton Come's Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. Yet despite all that success and notoriety, Peter Frampton was not included on either Rolling Stones' 2003 or 2011 lists of the top guitarists of all time.  I say the heck with the lists - Frampton earnes guitar god status for creating an album that came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. Well, since its Guitar Gods month, and Jerry is my favorite guitarist, and i tend to be a bit sad this time of year because we're approaching the anniversary of his death,  I figure the only thing to do is bring you 2 more Dead shows. Today and 2 days from now, we'll have 2 concerts from 1974, the year of the Wall of Sound. The band was on fire in 1974, especially during the summer as reflected by the incredible number of official releases from June to August, including June 16, June 26, June 28, July 19, July 29, July 31, August 4, August 5 and August 6. As you can see, today's show, a soundboard recording from June 25, 1974, 43 years ago today, falls right in the time frame of those official releases.. Muddy Waters - 1974-07-24 - Antibes, France (SBD)

Today we bring you another post featuring one of the legendary blues guitarists of our time. McKinley Morganfield, better known as Muddy Waters, is often cited as the father of modern Chicago blues. he influenced guitar legends such as Clapton, Page, Richards and Hendix.  Jimi once said "the first guitar player I was aware of was Muddy Waters. I first heard him as a little boy and it scared me to death. The Rolling Stones, of course, took their name from a Muddy Waters tune.  In 1987, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Elvis Presley - 1976-07-24 - Charleston, WV (SBD)

When Elvis Presley returned to live performing in 1969, he asked guitarist James Burton to lead his back up band.  Burton organized the TCB (Taking Care Of Business) and stayed with Elvis until the King's death in 1977.  Selecting Burton was a wise choice.  While casual rock fans may not know who he is, the industry most certainly does.  Burton appeared on both Rolling Stones' 2003 and 2001 lists of the 100 greatest guitarist, ranking #20 and #19, respectively. In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the category of Sidemen, when none other than fellow Guitar God Keith Richards handled his induction speech.  This soundboard recording captures Burton backing The King on July 24, 976, 41 years ago today.

Delaney & Bonnie and Friends - 1971-07-22 - New York, NY (FM)

For years, whenever I thought of Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, the friend that would always spring to mind is Eric Clapton. While on tour with Blind Faith in 1969, Clapton invited Delaney and Bonnie Bramlet to be the opening act. By the end of the tour, EC had parted ways with Blind Faith and would join Delaney and Bonnie! Clapton was just one rock legend, however, who would work closely with the Bramlets. Early in their career, they would work with Leon Redbone, Donald "Duck" Dunn and Issac Hayes. In 1970, the would be part of the Festival Express tour of Canada with Janis Joplin, The Band and The Grateful Dead. In January 1971, Duane Allman. Guitar God extraordinaire, sat in with Delaney and Bonnie at two shows at the Capitol Theater in Portchester NY. Then on July 22, 1971, 46 years ago today, Delaney and Bonnie played a show from A&R studios in New York, with some help from Duane, brother Gregg, and King Curtis. This WPLJ-FM broadcast of that show captures both their acoustic and electric sets, including an incredible 18 minute jam on Only You Know and I Know. The very title Guitar God implies that the  playing that instrument is the work of men. No women need apply for the job. Rolling Stone's 2003 and 2011 lists of the top 100 guitarists makes the same statement - only 2 women cracked the list each time (Joni Mitchell and Joan Jett in 2003, Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt in 2011). Rock & Roll in general tends to be more than a bit chauvinistic, so none of that is surprising. Heck, we're just as much at fault here at So Many Roads - we've only featured one female so far this month - Susan Tedeschi - and she was almost an after thought as we were focusing primarily on her husband , Derek Trucks. Well, today, we try to make up for that by featuring Sheryl Crow, who has played at Clapton's Crossroads festival in 2007 and has due ted with him on numerous occasions. Continuing our efforts to feature some legendary blues guitarists as part of our Guitar Gods month at So Many Roads, this soundboard recording captures Robert Cray on July 20, 2013, 4 years ago today  Of course, it you consult Rolling Stone, you would;t know that Cray existed as he does not appear on wither their 2993 or 2011 list f the top 100 guitarists.  Look, I know these lists are subjective. And i know that the selection system for each list varied.  I also know that it many cases the lists did a good job - 7 of the top 10 names were the same on both lists, or example, as noted in our BB King post earlier this o=month, and no one could argue with any of that group.  That said, its tough enough when one list ranks a talent like Warren Haynes, for example, 23rd in 2003, then ignores him completely in 2011. For the magazine to leave Robert Cray off both lists is simply inexplicable. Here's a man whose won Grammy awards for his music, helped put the blues on the record charts in the late 1980s, and has opened for and played alongside Eric Clapton. Sometimes, when thinking about Th Beatles, we are so busy marveling at the quality of their songs, the incredible innovations, the Lennon- McCartney partnership, the commercial success, and so on and so on, that we forget they were all incredibly talents musicians! Each is among the best to ever play their respective instruments  George Harrison is ranked in the to 25 guitarists of all time on both Rolling Stone lists, and 31st on the Digital Dream Door list.  George also played numerous guitar duets with Clapton, who, of course, played on My Guitar Gently Weeps, appeared at The Concert For Bangladesh,  and later backed George on his 1991 tour of Japan. We'll stick to guitar playing in this post and leave out the whole Patti Boyd/Layla thing! In any event, this post goes back to the early days of The Fab Four.  The Beatles performed on the BBC television show Blackpool Night Out twice in their career. Four tracks from the second appearance, in 1965, were included on the "Anthology 2" collection. This soundboard recording captures their first appearance on July 19, 1964, 53 years ago today, which has never been officially released in any form. The Beatles played 5 songs that night, including the first performances of 2 tunes from the A Hard Day's Night album, If I Fell and the title track. Led Zeppelin - 1977-07-17 - Seattle, WA (SBD)

Jimmy Page was ranked in the top 10 not only in both versions of Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists list, but also in Digital Dream Door's rankings. But does any rock fan really need to consult a list to know that Page is among the best of the best? He has worked his magic for the last 50 years with the Yardbirds, The Firm, David Coverdale, the Black Crowes and, of course, the mighty Led Zeppelin, alongside Robert Plant. Today's post, however, looks back at a difficult time in Page's illustrious career. As recounted in some earlier posts, Led Zep's 1977 tour was plagued by problems ranging from lack of rehearsal time to the debilitating effect of drugs on Jimmy Page.  The tour is a study in contrasts, a run of highs and lows, with very few moments in between.  The Seattle show, from July 17, 1977, 4 decades ago today, is emblematic of the entire tour.  If you read reviews of this show from Zep fans, they are bitterly divided over whether this show is a disaster or a classic.  Listening carefully, you can hear moments when Jimmy Page is horribly out of tune, such as during Over The Hills and Far Away, and times when is guitar work is a transcendent as at any point in his career, such as the solo during Stairway To Heaven. Seattle has also become a legendary because the only pro-shot video of the band from 1977 was taken during this concert.  Seeing a skeletal Jimmy Page in the video, the devastating result of his drug addiction, make you wish, however, that they hadn't filmed the show.

 Lou Reed - 1975-07-17 - Adelaide, Australia (SBD)

When you think on Lou Reed, you probably first think of his singing and song writing abilities.Rolling Stone also took note of his guitar work, ranking him #52 on their 2003 list and #81 on their 2011 list of the top 100 guitarists of all time. The magazine wrote that "Lou Reed has been blowing traditional guitar styles to bits since his Velvet Underground days. A fan of Ike Turner's R&B and Ornette Coleman's free jazz, he created epic bad-trip psychedelia on songs like "Sister Ray." "He was rightfully quite proud of his own soloing," wrote fellow New York guitar luminary Robert Quine, "but resigned to the fact that most people weren't ready for it." As a solo artist, Reed kept on ripping up the rule book: See 1975's Metal Machine Music, a noise opus that took feedback further than Hendrix could have imagined." While the comparison to Jimi may be a bit of a reach, Lou could certainly handle a guitar, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from July17, 1975, 42 years ago today.

Jimi Hendix - 1970-07-17 - Randalls Island, NY (SBD)

Throughout our month dedicated to Guitar Gods, we've refereed numerous times to the variety of lists ranking the best rock guitarists of all time.  We've wondered about Rolling Stone actually producing 2 such lists, 8 years apart, that widely differed in their rankings. Given how subjective the debate is, its hardly surprising that there's little if any consistency between any of these lists. Yet, incredibly, no matter what list or ranking you look at, every one of them has the same name at the the top: James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix". As David Fricke, who compiled the 2003 Rolling Stone rankings put it; "In the end, I looked at it this way: Jimi Hendrix was Number One in every way; the other 99 were all Number Two."  Today's  post captures the one and only Jimi playing yet another rock festival, While Monterey Pop, Woodstock, Altamont and Watkins Glenn are the most well known festivals,  almost every city or state seemed to host one at some point in the late 1960s and early 1970s. New York was no exception. From June 17 to June 19, 1970 the New York Pop Festival was held on at Downing Stadium on Randall’s Island, which is located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens, right off the RFK Tri-Borough Bridge. The festival featured such acts as Van Morrison, Grand Funk Railroad, Steppenwolf, Mountain, Ten Years After, Delaney and Bonnie, and Joe Cocker, just to name a few. In addition, Hendrix headlined the first night of the festival, on June 17, 1970, 47 years ago today. Jimi’s set at New York Pop was part of his Cry of Love Tour, his last run of live performances before his death in September. Download this soundboard recording, therefore, to capture one of Jimi’s last live concerts. By the way, one other note about New York Pop. Posters for the festival (see below) advertise Eric Clapton, one of the few men who could rival Jimi for first on the list of Guitar Gods, and Ginger Baker performing on the last night with Miles Davis and Tony Williams' Lifetime group. One guitarist who most certainly gets overlooked in rankings is Robbie Robertson of The Band. While The Band didn't didn't play extended jams like their partners at Watkins Glen, The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers, that didn't mean Robertson couldn't play the ax with the best of them, Just check out his exchange with EC during the Last Waltz during Further On Up The Road for proof. EC clearly recognized Robertson's skills, inviting him to the 2007 Crossroads Festival, which will post later this month.  In the meantime, this high quality recording captures the original line up, including Robbie Robertson, on July 16, 1976, 41 years ago today, during their final tour leading up to The Last Waltz.

Earlier this month we brought you Neil Young team ed up with fellow Guitar God, Steve Cropper. Today we have Neil paired along with Willie Nelson. While the country legend doesn't usually spring to mind when thinking of the greatest guitarists of all time, Rolling Stone's 2011 listing ranked him at #77. The magazine wrote that "like his conversational singing, Willie Nelson's guitar playing is deceptively laid back, playfully offbeat and instantly recognizable. Amazingly, Nelson has been playing the same Martin M-20 classical guitar, nicknamed Trigger, since 1969; it has defined his sound, a nylon-stabbing mix of country, blues and Django Reinhardt's gypsy jazz. Though the guitar now has a large gaping hole, Nelson still plays it nightly. "I have come to believe we were fated for each other," he said. "The two of us even look alike. We are both pretty battered and bruised." This FM broadcast captures Neil and Willie, who co-founded Farm Aid along with John Mellencamp, in Italy on July 17, 2016, just 1 year ago today.
