In 2015, The Who celebrated their 50th anniversary as a band. To commemorate the event, the band launched The Who Hits 50! tour, which Roger Daltrey hinted on numerous occasions would be band's "long goodbye". Turn out, they have launched 2 tours since, released a new album and don't seem to show any signed of retiring! In any event, this soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures then during that 50th anniversary run, at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 24, 2015, 11 years ago today.

Here's part 2 of our post of the FM Broadcast of the complete Live Aid concert, from July 13, 1985, 40 years ago today. This post features 2 of the most memorable performances of the day, by U2 and Queen. U2's set established them as rock superstars, while Queen's performance has often been ranked as one of the greatest live moments in rock history. This post also includes sets from Elton John, with both Kiki Dee and George Michael; Santana, with Pat Metheny; the Who in their first show since their 1982 farewell tour, and Ashford & Simpson, with a wheel chair bound Teddy Pendergrass making his first public appearance since the car accident that left him paralyzed. The Roskilde Festival is an annual Danish music festival which dates back to 1971.  It is one of the largest music festivals in Europe and the largest in the Nordic countries. This soundboard recording captures The Who headling at Roskilde on July 7, 2007, 18 years ago today.  About 10 month earlier, in October 2006, The Who had released the album Endless Wire, their first studio disc in 2 dozen years, since It's Hard in 1982. The disc received generally positive reviews from music critics and debuted at #7 on the Billboard album charts in the US.

Twenty years after Live Aid raised millions to "Feed The World", Bob Geldorf launched another massive series of benefit concerts/festivals designed to "Make Poverty History.  Known as Live 8, these concerts, held in 10 countries simultaneously, were timed right before the start of the G8 economic summit in order to gain the attention of world political leaders. Live 8 played a key role in getting the G8 nations to pledge to double aid too impoverished countries from $25 billion to $50 billion by 2010.  This FM broadcast from July 2, 2005, 2 decades years ago today, captures some of the highlights from the London portion of Live 8 festival, including sets from Paul Mccartney, U2, Elton John, Sting, The Who and Pink Floyd, with Roger Waters rejoining David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright for the first time in 24 years.

Monterey Pop - 1967-06-18 - Sunday Evening, Monterey CA (SBD)

It was the first major rock festival that attracted national attention (the Magic Mountain festival took place a week earlier to far less fanfare - go here for more on that), hosting over 200,000 people over 3 days, with 90,000 fans in attendance at its peak on Sunday night. It was the place where Jimi Hendrix and The Who made their U.S. debuts. It marked the first major public appearances by Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. It embodied the counter culture spirit of San Francisco, with almost all the acts performing for free. It was the first multi-racial and multi-genre musical event. And it will ever be synonymous with the Summer of Love. It was officially, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, better know simply as Monterey Pop. Today in a month dedicated to festivals, we bring you a soundboard recording of the closing night on June 18, 1967, 58 years ago today. The early highlight was the US debut of The Who, who followed a set by the Buffalo Springfield. For The Who, who had been recommended for the festival by advisory board member Paul McCartney, it was the moment in which they captured the attention of fans and critics in the states. For the Springfield, it was the usual chaos, as Neil Young missed the show due to bickering with Stephen Stills, forcing the band to have David Crosby sit in. Of course, that was only the start of the fireworks that transpired on that night. Though on their home turf, the Grateful Dead had the unenviable position of having to play right after The Who's and right before the man who would become a rock god at Monterey.  Jimi Hendrix was also at the festival on the recommendation of  McCartney, who had seen Hendrix play in London. On this night, the whole world got to see what McCartney already knew. The image of Hendrix pouring lighter fluid on his guitar and burning it, is one of the most memorable in rock history. And his playing was unlike anything anyone had ever seen or heard. It was quite unfair that The Mamas and The Papas, who had been leading lights in organizing Monterey Pop, had to follow Jimi on stage. No one could have. Note - numbering starts at 91 as this is taken from a set featuring all 3 days of the show!

1980s - #1: On March 26, 1989, The Who launched a brief 6 show warm up tour in preparation for a more extensive, 37 show run in North America that would begin on April 14.  This tour was just the 2nd featuring Kenny Jones on drums, who had taken over the reins after the death of Keith Moon in September 1978.  This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures the 6th and final night of the European segment, in Frankfort on April 1, 1980, 45 years ago today.

1960s - #5: In fall of 1969, The Who returned to North America for their 2nd tour, of that continent, which would run from October 10 though November 16.  The band was on tour in support of Tommy, their 2 disc rock opera that just might be their finest work. The Who - 2000-08-29 - Houston TX (SBD)

The Who were one of the few English bands to play Woodstock, but their set is the stuff of legends. The band didn't take the stage until 5 am Sunday morning due to all the rain delays and equipment issues. Their 25 song set featured the rock opera Tommy, followed by Summertime Blues, Shakin All Over, My Generation and Naked Eye. While the band was playing We're Not Going to Take It, the sunrise occurred at precisely at the most dramatic moment in the song. The band was so pleased at the aesthetic effect of this coincidence that they arranged special lighting at future concerts to try and mimic it. During their performance, Peter Townsend had a run in with activist Abbie Hoffman. Hoffman went on stage between songs, grabbed a mic, and began ranting about the recent arrest of radical John Sinclair. Townshend, none too happy that Hoffman had violated what he called the sanctity of the stage, swung his guitar at Hoffman and kicked him off the stage.

This soundboard recording captures The Who 31 years after Woodstock in Houston on August 29, 2000. The 2000 tour featured original members Peter Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, along with Zack Starkey on drums and John Bundrick on keyboards. The band played 38 dates, beginning on June 6 in New York, and concluding on November 27 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Sadly, it would be the last tour included Entwistle. On June 27, 2002, just days before their next US tour was due to begin, Entwistle was found dead from a heart attack at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Cocaine had played a role in triggering the fatal attack.

The Who entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.  That class also featured Bobby Darin, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, The Kinks, and Simon & Garfunkel, just to name a few.

This soundboard recording captures The Who in London on March 22, 2004, 20 years ago today (to quote Sgt. Pepper).  The concert was openinmg night of a world tour in support of the album Then & Now, a greatest hits collection that also featured 2 new songs - Real Good Looking Boy and Old Red Wine.  Te tour would take the abnd to North America, Australia and Japan agter a series of shows in the UK.

1990 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1990-01-17 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The biggest act inducted at the 1990 Rock & Roll Hall of fame ceremony was clearly The Who, who played a 3 song set. But some of the biggest moments belonged to 2 on stage reunions that some speculated might not happen. The original Four Seasons appeared together for the first time since 1970.  And Simon & Garfunkel reunited to play 2 tunes, including Bridge Over Troubled Water. One other note - the hall got one right by inducting Bobby Darin, one of the great voices of all time (and one of my favorite singers).

On December 14, during their 2nd show in Richfield, Ohio, Pete Townshend announced that it would be their last concert in the US. It clearly appeared that The Who was calling it a career. This sounndboar recording capturs them the next night, in Torinto, on December 16, 1982,  41 years ago today on what at appeared at the time to be their penultimate concert. The Who 1999 - Back To Back - #1: We end the month where we began it - at a Bridge School Benefit ceoncert, albeit this one is 5 years later. In 1999, The Who were part of a stellar Briodge School line up, which also included Emmy Lou Harris, James Iha & Billy Corgan, Lucinda Williams, Brian Wilson, Green Day, Pearl Jam, Sheryl Crow, and of course, host Neil Young. The Who ran through acoustic versions of a host of their greatest hits, and threw in some Johnny Cash covers for good meaaure. The Who - 2000-07-07 - Camden, NJ (SBD)

2000s - #2: After playing 7 shows in late 1999 that highlighted material from Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse project, the band decided to embark on a full scale tour in 2000. By the way, the Lifehouse project was originally intended as a rock opera that would follow Tommy, but instead morphed into Who’s Next, one of the greatest albums in rock history. That said, Townshend continually revisited material from the Lifehouse project throughout his career, including during the 1999-2000 tours. In addition to original members Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the band included Zack Starkey on drums and John Bundrick on keyboards. The Who played 38 dates, beginning on June 6 in New York, and concluding on November 27 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This ALD recording captures the band early in the tour, on July 7, 2000, 23 years ago today, in Camden NJ.

In 2015, The Who celebrated their 50th anniversary as a band. To commemorate the event, the band launched The Who Hits 50! tour, which Roger Daltrey hinted on numerous occasions would be band's "long goodbye". Turn out, they have launched 2 tours since, released a new album and don't seem to show any signed of retiring! In any event, this soundboard recording captures then during that 5oth anniversary run, in Philadelphia on May 17, 2015, 8 years ago today.
