Here’s our 2nd post featuring Paul McCartney in the 21st century. Having spent much of 2002 and 2003 touring, Sir Paul took about a year off between June 2003 and May 2004. When he went out on the road for his Summer 2004 tour, it was just a brief stint, 14 shows in Europe over a 2 month span. While not a long tour, the playing was superb and numerous bootlegs from this run can be found on the web. This soundboard, from May 30, 2004, just a decade ago today, captures the 3rd show on the tour. Paul is in excellent voice, the band's playing is tight, and you can feel the excitement as they play almost 3 dozen Beatle and McCartney classics. Enjoy!

June's Theme At So Many Roads

For June our theme is nice and simple - it's Bruce Springsteen month at So Many Roads.  We'll bring you a dozen shows from New Jersey's own Mr.Springsteen, from the early 1970s right through the new millennium.

In addition, as we did last years in month's dedicated to the Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan, for every other band we post in June, we'll bring you the connection that artist has to Springsteen.  While some of those connections may be obvious (think Springsteen and Dylan, or Bruce & Southside Johnny), I think you'll also find some surprising ones along the way!  So get ready to take a trip "cross the river to the Jersey side" in June!

John Fogerty - 2013-05-28 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

In July 1968, Creedence Clearwater Revival issued their self titled debut album. It would be their 2nd album, Bayou Country, released in January 1969, that would make them a critical and commercial success. That album would climb to #7 on the Billboard charts, while the single Proud Mary would reach the 2nd spot, the first of five #2 singles for CCR, the most by any band without ever having a tune top the charts. Creedence would disband in 1972, and its leader, John Fogerty, would avoid playing his classic tunes in concert for over 15 years, due to a dispute with his record company. Fortunately, Fogerty is again playing CCR classics live, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from May 28, 2013, just 1 year ago today.

Elton John released his debut album, Empty Sky, on June 6, 1969  The disc, however, was only released in the UK and would not hit stores across the pond in the US until 1975, well after Sir Elton had become a superstar. In the US, therefore, the first album he released was his self-titled disc which contained the single Your Song. That album went on sale on both sides of the Atlantic in spring 1970, just about the time Elton recorded this May 22, 1970 broadcast for the BBC, 44 years ago today. The first 6 tracks he played were all from the Elton John album, but for his last tune, he gave fans of preview of his future plans, playing Burn Down The Mission which would be included on the Tumbleweed Connection album released in October 1970.

While Paul McCartney, and his backing band Wings, didn’t release an album until the 1970s, he was part of a little group that had some impact on the 1960s. The Beatles debut album, Please Please Me, was released in the UK on March 22, 1963, and went to number 1 on that country’s charts. At the time, the Beatles’ record distribution deal for the US was different from that in the UK, so the band’s first US album on Capitol records was entitled Meet The Beatles and was released on January 2o, 1964. Different title, different tracks, different release date, same result – Meet The Beatles went to the top of the US charts. Some 5 decades later, Sir Paul McCartney is still at the top of the rock world. We’ll feature 2 of his concerts from the 21st century this month as part of our Legacy of The 1960s theme. Grateful Dead - 1974-05-19 - Portland OR (SBD)

The Grateful Dead released their self-titled debut album on March 17, 1967, just a few months before The Summer Of Love would bring thousands to San Francisco and especially, the Haight-Ashbury district where the Dead lived at 710 Ashbury Street. ( I made sure to visit the address when I spent some time in San Francisco in 1995!). The album was recorded in just 4 days, and its pace, for the most part, is frenetic. A very different band took the stage 7 years later in Portland, on May 19, 1974, 4 decades ago this very day. Founding member and keyboardist, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan had passed away at age 27 in 1973. Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux had joined the band, and the group’s sound had taken on a jazzier feel, though psychedelic improvisation remained at its heart and soul. As mentioned previously, The Deads’ performances in 1974 rank among their best. So this month, as part of our legacy of the 1960s theme, we’ll bring you 3 shows from May 1974. The Who - 1974-05-18 - London UK (SBD)

On December 3, 1965, The Who released their debut album, entitled My Generation. It was the start of a career in which The Who are often regarded as one of the top 4 or 5 bands of all time – the other contenders being The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. By 1969, their music had evolved from guitar driven singles to thematic rock operas, as evidenced with the release of Tommy that year. In 1971, the Who would release what is undoubtedly one of the finest albums in rock history, the legendary Who’s Next. They would follow that up with their 2nd classic rock opera, Quadrophenia, in 1973. This soundboard recording captures The Who just after that run of albums, on May 18, 1974, 4o years ago today, in London.

Neil Young - 2002-05-18 - Nurburgring, Germany (SBD)

Neil Young released his self-titled debut album November 12, 1968. It failed to chart on either side of the Atlantic. Hardly an auspicious solo debut for a man who had already become somewhat of a legend thanks to his work with Buffalo Springfield. Of course, it wouldn’t take Neil long to rule the rock world. In 1970, his album, After The Gold rush, went to #8 on the Billbaord charts, while the CSNY disc, Déjà vu, climbed all the way to #1, CSNY would have another #1 album in 1971 with the release of the live disc 4 Way Street. Then in 1972, Neil would score the only #1 solo album with the release of Harvest. Four decades later, Neil, after more career twists and turns than can be counted, Neil was still rocking in the free world, still defying authority and father time as well. This soundboard recording captures Neil in Germany on May 18, 2002, a dozen years ago today, neither burning out nor fading away.

Bob Dylan - 1976-05-16 - Fort Worth TX (SBD)

Bob Dylan released his self-titled debut album on March 19, 1962, a disc featuring just 2 original tunes and 11 covers of folk or traditional tunes. The album was reflective of the Greenwich Village folk scene, and barely hinted at what was to come in Dylan’s long storied career. In fact, in a 2000 interview, Dylan indicated that he was hesitant to reveal too much of himself in his recording debut. .By 1976, Dylan and the world had changed dramatically. The singer had gone electric, written some of the greatest protest music the world had ever seen, endured a terrifying motorcycle accident, and launched two of the most anticipated and electrifying tours in rock history, hos 1974 excursion with The Band and his 19765/76 rolling Thunder Review. This soundboard captures Dylan on May 16, 1976, 38 years ago today, in Fort Worth, TX on the 2nd leg of The Rolling Thunder Review.

The Band - 1996-05-16 - Las Vegas, NV (FM)

On July 1, 1968, The Band released their debut album, Music From Big Pink, and in the process, and in the process, helped change the direction of rock & roll. The albums rock roots style, far simpler than the complex jamming of the psychedelic era, attracted the attention of many of rock’s royalty. Eric Clapton cited the album as one the reasons he left Cream. George Harrison was so inspired by the album that he returned to playing guitar after 2 long years of trying to master the sitar. He even spent time with The Band in upstate New York in late 1968, finding the laid back atmosphere and simpler style a pleasant and needed change from The Beatle’s then tension filled recording sessions. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked Music From Big Pink at #34 34 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. By then, The Band had disbanded for good, after making music together in various configurations for over 3 decades. This FM broadcast captures THE Band in Las Vegas near the end of their career, on May 16, 1996, 18 years ago today.

Fleetwood Mac - 2003-05-15 - Buffalo, NY (FM)

Fleetwood Mac released their self-titled debut album (later renamed Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac) on February 24, 1868. The album, which was heavy on blues tunes, featured just 2 band members, Mick Fleetwood & John McVie, who would be with Fleetwood Mac when they hit the peak of their commercial and critical success in the 1970s. The band’s 1977 monster album, Rumours, eschewed the blues for a more polished, AOR sound, sold over 19 million copies, went to #1 on the Billboard charts and won the Grammy for album of the year. Of course, by 2003, the band had undergone even more changes. Members came and went throughout that time, and the band even broke up for a while. This soundboard recording from May 15, 2003, 11 years ago today, features the reunited band, but only includes 4 of the 5 members who recorded Rumours - Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood, as Christine McVie declined to tour.

Robert Hunter - 1997-05-13 - Morristown, NJ (SBD)

Robert Hunter may not have released an album until 1974, but he clearly qualifies for our Legacy of The 1960s theme for his work with the Grateful Dead. On the Dead’s 3rd album, Aoxomoxoa, whch was released on June 20, 1969, every tune was composed by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia (with a little bit of help from Phil Lesh on St. Stephen). How integral were Hunter’s contributions to the band? Well, when the Dead were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, Hunter was included as a band member, the only non-performer to ever be so honored. This soundboard recording captures Hunter out on his own, in Morristown NJ on May 13, 1997, 17 years ago today. He performs a host of Grateful Dead classics in his set, including such tunes as Mountains On The Moon and Dark Star that he wrote back in the 1960s.

Jefferson Starship - 1975-05-12 - Central Park, NY (FM)

The Jefferson Starship itself is a legacy of the 1960s. The band emerged from the ashes of the Jefferson Airplane, who released their debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, in August 1966. Of course, it would be their next disc Surrealistic Pillow, released in the Summer Of Love in 1967 with Grace Slick on board, that would skyrocket the band to stardom. As mentioned earlier, when the Airplane dissolved in 1973,   its successor almost immediately rose from the ashes. Jefferson Starhsip, led by former Airplane members Grace Slick and Paul Kanter, released the album Dragonfly in 1974, featuring the single, Ride The Tiger.  By 1975, Marty Balin, another Airplane refugee, had joined the Starship.  In June 1975, the Starship would release the album Red Octopus, which would become the best selling album that any configuration of Jefferson Airplane/Starship would release.  The album hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, and the single, Miracles, went to number 3.  Just a few weeks before the album's release, the Starship played in front over over 100,000 fans on the Sheep Meadow in Central Park.  During the show, the police continually harassed the band to ask the fans to get out of the trees!  This tape of the WNEW-FM broadcast captures that historic show from May 12, 1975, 39 years ago today, in its entirety.  The band plays several songs from soon to be released Red Octupus, but ironically, Miracles isn't included in the set list.  They do play several Airplane tunes, however, to close the show.  Download this one to catch the Starship when they still were a major force in the music world, long before the horror of We Built This City On Rock and Roll.

Today, So Many Roads To Ease My Soul marks the following milestones:

- Over 1 million visitors total from 163 countries
- 4 1/2 years of sharing live performances of the greatest music ever made

I had no idea when I launched this site 54 months ago what it would grow into.  Or that the concerts I post would would take the form of a "this day in rock history" review. Or how many on -ine friends I would make, many of whom have helped me in improving and growing this site. Or, how much time it would take. I thank my wife and kids for allowing me to indulge in this past time which brings me so much joy.

Of course, what really makes So Many Roads meaningful is knowing how many folks from all over the world enjoy the music I post.  The thank you comments that I receive each day, especially those that share a concert or personal memory, make it all worthwhile!

Thank you all for supporting this site for so many years!  I look forward to our 5th anniversary this coming November 11 ,and many more years of posting great music!  Enjoy the tunz!

Allman Brothers Band - 1970-05-09 - Georgia Tech, GA (SBD) 

The Allman Brothers Band just squeaked into our Legacy of The 1960s theme, releasing their self-titled debut album on November 4, 1969. The disc included a 5 minute, 19 second version of Whipping Post, which just might be the shortest iteration ever of that song. Whipping Post would go on to become a centerpiece of the Allman’s live jams, with versions extending well past the 20 minute mark. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans just a few months after their debut album hit stores, on May 9. 1970, 44 years ago today. The set list included Whipping Post, of course, clocking in at a mere 18 minutes long.

Santana - 1983-05-08 - Zurich, Switzerland (SBD) 

Santana released their self-titled debut album in August 1969, just days after the band’s historic performance at Woodstock. The disc would go to #4 on the Billboard charts, and spawn the top 10 single, Evil Ways. The band’s next 2 albums, Abraxas in 1970 and Santana III in 1971, would both reach #1 on the charts. By the 1980’s, however, Santana’s Latin infused sound had undergone a significant change. Albums such as Inner Secrets, Marathon and Zebop has a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound, designed to give the band more commercial appeal. This soundboard recording from May 8, 1983, 31 years ago today, captures Carlos near the end of his AOR period.

Peter Frampton- 1974-05-07 - Hempstead NY (SBD)

In August 1969, Humble Pie released their debut album entitled, As Safe as Yesterday Is. The band featured Peter Frampton on guitar. Frampton would appear on 3 more Humble Pie discs before leaving the band to pursue a solo career. He released a solo album every year from 1972 to 1975, without a great deal of commercial success. While the album Frampton in 1975 went to #32 on the Billboard charts, the prior 3 discs failed to crack the top 100. Then, of course, in 1976 came the phenomenon known as Frampton Comes Alive, a double disc that sold over 6 million copies, went to $1 on the charts, spawned 3 top 15 singles, made the guitar talk box famous, and in some ways forever changed the music industry. Artists and record companies sought to produce similar blockbuster albums, and the late 1970s would produce a host of them including Rumours, Hotel California and Boston and Bat Out Of Hell. This soundboard recording, however, captures Frampton before all the hype of his live album, playing a live set at Ultrasonic Studios on May 7, 1974, 40 years ago today, The set list includes a host of tunes which would become famous thanks to Frampton’s historic live disc, including the legendary Do You Feel Like We Do.

James Taylor - 2003-05-06 - Lennox, MA (SBD)

James Taylor fits our legacy of the 1960s, but the story behind is debut album is a unique one. Taylor’s self-titled debut disc was released on Apple Records on December 6, 1968. The disc was the first released on Apple by a non-British artist. It was produced by Peter Asher, who was the head of A&R for Apple, and included guest appearances by Paul McCartney and George Harrison on Carolina In My Mind. In fact, the lyric from that tune - holy host of others standing around me - is a reference to the Beatles! The other notable song on the disc, Something In The Way She Moves, provided the starting lyric for Harrison's classic tune, Something. When Apple fell into financial disarray in 1969, Taylor was released from his deal and went on to record for Warner Brothers, with Asher as his manager and producer, releasing his first disc on that label in 1970. This soundboard recording captures Taylor at a rehearsal at Tanglewood on May 6, 2003, 11 years ago today and some 35 years after his debut album.
