Believe it or not, I've seen the Go Gos on 3 occasions - in November 1981 at the Palladium in New York, in January 1982 leading in for the Police at Madison Square Garden, and then again in July 2000 on a bill with the B52s and Psychedelic Furs.

Of course the height of their success came in the early 1980s. In June 1981, The Go Go's released the single, We Got The Beat, and the accompanying video became a mainstay om the then fledgling MTV channel. A month later, the band released the album Beauty and The Beat, which steadily climbed the charts until it reached the top spot, where it remained for 6 weeks. The Go Go's had taken the music world by storm, and made history in the process. Beauty and The Beat became the first album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts. Today the disc is recognized as one of the cornerstones of the new wave movement. This FM broadcast captures them during those heady days on August 31, 1981, 45 years ago today,  at the Emerald City night club in Cherry Hill, NJ. By the way - check out the ticket price in the album artwork below - $6.50! The Ticket Master surcharges today cost more than that!

Believe it or not, I've been to 3 concerts by the Go Gos - once in November 1981 at the Palladium, the just a few months later in January 1982 at Madison Square Garden as the lead-in band for The Police, and then, some 18 years later in July 2000 at the PNC Bank Arts Center sharing the bill with the B52s! What can I say - its a guilty pleasure!  When you listen to their first two albums - Beauty & The Beat, released in 1981 which went to #2 on the Billboard charts, and Vacation, released in 1982 which went to #8 on the charts, you simply want to get up and dance. As Nick Lowe would say, its pure pop for now people!

This TV SBD recording captures The Go Gos about a years after I saw them for the last time, in Central Park, on June 22, 2001, a quarter century ago today.

1980s - #2: In January 1985, the Go-Gos played 2 shows at the first Rock In Rio, on January 13 and January 18.  The concerts were the debut and swan song for new member Paula Jean Brown, who had replaced Jane Wiedlin (Weidlin had left to pursue solo initiatives but would return to the band for its various reunions in the 1990s and beyond). Soon after the festival, the Go-Go's broke up, though they would reunite on countless occasions over the next 40 years!  This TV soundboard recording captures the first on their 2 perfromances, on January 13, 1985, 41 years ago today.

On January 22, 1982, I was fortunate enough to have a ticket to see The Police at Madison Square Garden on their historic Ghost in The Machine tour. That album went to #2 on the billboard charts, while the band became the first new wave act to headline 20,000 seat arenas, such as MSG. The Go Go’s, were the lead-in band that night and their album, Beauty and The Beat, actually did one better than the Police’s disc, reaching the top of the Billboard charts! Just a few months earlier, on November 28, 1981, I had seen the Go Go’s when they headlined the Palladium in New York. That was a far better setting for the band, whose danceable hits translated much better on the small stage than in the cavernous spaces inside the World’s Greatest Arena. Whereas at the Palladium, the Go Go’s had the crowd on their feet dancing and singing from the first note to the last, they just could not generate the same energy level among the thousands at MSG. The contrast became even more stark when the Police hit the stage and were able to induce a mass sing along to Walking On The Moon. Trust me, the Go Go’s played well that night at the Garden, but the jump in arena size just wasn’t one they were prepared to make at the time. In any event, while I’ve never found a tape of the Go Go’s from that January 22 show (or of the Police for that matter), I do have this soundboard recording of the band from 7 days earlier in Boston, on January 15, 1982, 29 years ago today.
