1976: On September 15, 1976, the judge in the lawsuit between Springsteen and ex-manager Mike Appel ruled that Bruce was enjoined from any further recording with Columbia Records until the case was resolved. In addition, proceeds from Born To Run were tied up in various accounting disputes, some related to the lawsuit, so Bruce had no source of income. So, he went back out on the roads starting on September 26, for a brief run pf shows, which finished with 6 nights at The Palladium in New York, This FM Broadcast captures the final night of that run, on November 4, 1976, 50 years ago today. And what a finale it was. A pre-show bomb hoax results in Bruce jokingly asking the audience to look under their seats (obviously a far different atmosphere than today's post 9-11 world). Springsteen delivers stunning cover versions of It’s My Life and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. To top it off, Ronnie Spector guests on three of her most famous Ronettes-era hits, all given inspired arrangements by the E Street Band. The lawsuits may have kept Bruce out of the studio, but it was clear he still ruled on stage.

1976: In August 1976, Linda Ronstadt released the album Hasten Down The Wind, which became her 3rd straight million selling disc, making her the first female artist in history to accomplish that feat. The album also earned Linda her second of a record 10 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance The album was different from 1974's Heart Like A Wheel and 1975's Prisoner In Disguise in that she chose to showcase new songwriters as opposed to country rock tunes. The title track, for example was written by then up and coming songwriter Warren Zevon. One of the most famous tracks from the album, Someone To Lay Down Beside Me, was composed by the then little known Karla Bonoff. The album received huge critical acclaim, and also spent several weeks in the top 3 on the Billboard charts. Ronstadt went on tour later that year in support of the album, and this soundboard captures her a half century ago today, November 3, 1976, in Los Angeles!

The Band were part of the 1994 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class, along with John Lennon, the Grateful Dead, The Animals, and Bob Marley, just to name a few other inductees that year.  While Robbie Robertson was in attendance, Levon Helm decided not to show up due to long running issues with Robertson. Eric Clapton handled the induction speech and also sat in with the groupo when they performed The Weight.

This TV soundboard recording captures The Band on Saturday Night Live on October 30, 1976, a half century ago today.  Less than a month later, they would play the legendary LAst Waltz concert in San Francisco, retiring from live performing.  Of course, that turmed out to be just temporarly, as 4/5 of the group (all but Robertson) reunited in 1983.

Elvis Presley was part of the inaugural class inducted Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1986 - what else would you expect for a man nicknamed "The King".  Also inducted that year were  Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Fat Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis - every one a no brainer. The only sad part was so many of them were no longer with us to celebrate their achievement.

The soundboard recording captures The King at Notre Dame on October 20, 1976, 37 years ago today. Thee sold our crowd of 12,000 was treated a much slimmer Elvis, generating hope that the legendary singer was trying to regain his past form. Behind the scenes, however, Presley was dealing with a host of personal drama. He had hired a private investigator to try to prevent his former body guards, Red and Sonny West, from publishing a tell-all book about him. They declined a large cash offer, and just days after this show, The Star published an article entitled “Elvis’ Dramatic Plea To His Ex-Body Guards: Don’t Write This Book About Me.” Elvis was mortified that the issue went public, and fell deeper into a spiral of drug abuse and erratic behavior. Less than a year later, The King would be gone at the age of 42.

Joe Cocker finally entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, alongside Warren Zevon, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, and Cyndi Lauper, just to name a few members of the class. Perhaps Cocker's induction was helped by Sir Paul McCartney, who penned a note to the Hall on his behalf.

This TV soundboard recording captures Cocker on Saturday Night Live on October 2, 1976, a half century ago today. SNL was revolutionary for its time, a fully live broadcast that showcased brilliant comedians such as John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, etc,  It also became the place where the biggest names in rock wanted to play, as you'll see from several other posts this month.  In any event, after Cocker played his most recent single "You Are So Beautiful", he came back later in the show to perform "Feelin' Alright".  And that's when something happened that was only possible at the time on SNL. John Belushi joined Cocker and his band on stage, doing a perfect imitation of the future Hall Of Famer, including wearing identical clothing, while standing right next to him. A portion of that moment is captured in the youtube video below while the full video is included along with the audio files in the download.  By the way, it wasn't the first time Belushi did his Joe Cocker impression on the show.  A year earlier, on October 25, 1975, the 3rd ever episode of SNL, since the show did not have a scheduled musical guest, John took the stage as "Joe" to perform With A Little Help From My Friends, which you can see here.

I've seen Sir Elton John 6 times, but today's show was the first, as well well as being the very first concert I ever attended.  My lifetime of live rock and roll all started with this one. In early spring 1976, tickets went on sale for Elton John at Madison Square Garden, a then unheard of 7 show stand at the World's Greatest Arena which would conclude his world wide Louder Than The Concorde (But Not Quite As Pretty) Tour. Elton, while not yet a Sir, was easily the biggest rock star in the world at the time. The previous year, he had become the first artist to ever have an album debut at #1 on the Billboard charts, when he released Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy. When the next release, Rock of The Westies also went to #1, it marked his 6th straight album that reached the top spot. So, it came as no surprise that my buddies and I decided our first concert experience had to be Elton at the Garden. Shut out from getting tickets through Ticketron, we opted for the local scalper, who sold us floor seats for $25. My dad gave me hell for paying three times the face value ($8.50!) to go see "some long haired rock and roller" (pretty ironic given the state of Elton's hair line). Parental disapproval aside, we made the trek from NJ to The Garden on August 15, 1976, 50 years - yes a half century - ago today. The 20,000 of us that packed MSG that night had little use for the seats we paid for, as we spent the entire show on our feet. Elton easily lived up to his self anointed nickname of Captain Fantastic on that August night. The concert included classic tunes such as Bennie and the Jets, Rocket Man, Saturday Night's Alright, and Your Song, surprise selections such as Love Song, Hercules, and Empty Sky, and even a special guest as Kiki Dee joined Elton for their joint number 1 single, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, as well as her own hit, I Got The Music In Me. After 3 hours and 22 songs, Elton had left the building and we all knew we had gotten our $25 worth, despite what the parents might have thought. Now thanks to my good friend Andy, to whom I'll always be indebted, I have an excellent audience recording of my first concert, so I can relive the memories whenever I want. This is the concert that inspired my self published book, Ten Rules Of The Road That I Learned At My First Concert, so it just had to be included in this month's posts!

On April 23, 1976, The Rolling Stones released Black & Blue, their first studio album in 2 years. The disc had originally been intended for release in 1975 prior to the Stone’s tour of North America, but was delayed as the band auditioned a variety of guitarists to take the place of Mick Taylor. The candidates included Steve Marriott, Harvey Mandel, Wayne Perkins, and even Peter Frampton, but in the end, The Stones chose Ronnie Wood. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts in the US and took the #2 spot in the UK. The first single from Black & Blue, Fool To Cry, climbed to #10 on the Billboard charts. Critical reviews were mixed, however, as Robert Christgau gave the record an A-, but Lester Bangs claimed that Black and Blue was “the first meaningless Rolling Stones album.” The band launched a European tour on April 28 in support of the disc, playing 41 shows in 2 months. This soundboard recording captures the Stones in London, on May 22, 1976, 5 decades ago today.  Billy Preston sits in with them for two of his songs, Nothing From Nothing and Outta Space.

Three of the album's tracks celebrate his return home by specifically referencing New York: Summer, Highland Falls, New York State Of Mind and Miami 2017. In addition, the opening number, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, is his not so fond farewell to the West Coast. While the album only climbed to #122 in the Billboard charts, it did help launch Billy on his first headline tour. This FM broadcast captures Joel i Australia on May 19, 1976, 50 years ago today.

Then in July, their former record company, Atlantic, re-released the single She’s Gone, hoping to capitalize on the success of Sara Smile. It worked, as the song climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts. RCA had the last laugh, however, when the band’s next single, Rich Girl, from the 1976 album, Bigger Than Both of Us, became the duo’s first number one hit! This soundboard recording captures Hall & Oates during their climb to the top of the charts, in London on May 18, 1976, a half century ago today.

The former Mr. Robert Zimmerman was inducted by Bruce Springsteen, one of the countless rock stars who at one point in their carrer was labeled the "next Bob Dylan".  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone at the ceremony supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second.

This soundboard recording captures Dylan during the legendary Rolling Thunder Revue tour in Mobile on April 29, 1976, 5 decades ago today. Supporting Dylan as part of the Revue were future Hall Of Famers Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, and Roger McGuinn.

Bruce Springsteen was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 1999, aong with Billy Joel, Dusty Springfield, and Sir Paul McCartney, just to name a few others. At the time the Hall did his long time back up group, the legendary E Street Band, a disservice by not including them. Springsteen made up for it by inviting the entire band to attend the ceremony, and then bringing them on stage. As he and the band had not played together since 1989, it was a historic moment that became much more. Soon after, a reunion tour was announced. To paraphrase the Blues Brother’s movie “they’re putting the band back together”. By the way, the injustice of omitting the E-Streeters from the hall was corrected in 2014.

This soundboard recording captures Bruce in the city where the Rock Hall of Fame now resides, on April 8, 1976, a half century ago today. For Springsteen, 1975 had been a breakthrough year as he released Born To Run, played historic concerts at The Bottom Line in NY and The Roxy in Los Angeles, and made the covers of Time and Newsweek in the same week. Yet despite the critical acclaim, Bruce still had not yet graduated to playing arena and stadium size shows. When he went back out on the road in Spring 1976, his road crew referred to the 2 month run of shows as The Chicken Scratch tour. The nickname reflected the meandering route the tour took the south, midwest, and northeast US, hitting numerous small towns where the band had never before played, and often backtracking on itself to get to the next gig. One side note - the Chicken Scrtach tour is also famous for Bruce's visit to Graceland after his April 29 show in Memphis. Upon arrival, he noticed a light on in the house, assumed it meant the King was home, and proceeded to jump the gates. Security intervened, had no idea who he was despite Bruce's efforts to explain he had been on the covers of Time and Newsweek, and politely escorted him to the street.

He has performed every style of music imaginable, including pop, rock, R&B, show tunes, country, dance, techno, soul and gospel. He has sung the theme song to numerous movies, including What's New Pussy Cat and The Emperor's New Groove. His voice, with its trademark Welsh accent, makes every song he sings instantly identifiable. And his electrifying live performances still result in women throwing their underwear onto the stage. He is Tom Jones, and even after over 60 years in the music business, he still has that magic when he takes the stage to captivate an audience. 1970s - #4: On December 8, 1975, Bob Dylan brought the Rolling Thunder review to New York's Madison Square Garden for the final concert of that triumphant tour. The concert was also a benefit for boxer Rueben "Hurricane" Carter, who Dylan had written about in his song Hurricane. That tune alleged that Carter had been the victim of racism, leading to a unfair trial that convicted him of a murder he did not commit. The concert raised over $100,000 for Carter's legal expenses. The on January 25, 1976, 5 decades ago today, Dylan held a second benefit for Carter, this time in Houston. Also on the bill were Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Dr. John, Shawn Phillips, along with special guests Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills, Richie Havens, and Carlos Santana. Thanks to the public attention brought to the case by the concerts and the song, Carter eventually won the right to a new trial, but was again convicted. Finally, in 1985, that conviction was overturned, with the US District Court in NJ stating that the case had been "based on racism rather than reason and concealment rather than disclosure." This TV soundboard recordimng captures Stephen Stills at that 2nd benefit for Carter in the Astrodome.

The Grateful Dead performed at Farm Aid in 1986 and 1987, but never appeared live at the festival.  In 1986, they were in Buffalo and portions of their set were simulcast for the live crowd in Austin to enjoy on the big screen.  Likewise in  1987, the Dead were in New York, and 3 songs from their 2nd set were simulcast for those gathered at Farm Aid in Lincoln.

This soundboard recording captures the Dead 10 years before their first Farm Aid appearance, on September 27, 1976, 49 years ago today, in Rochester.  The concert was part of their first fall tour since returing to live performing in June 1976, after about a year and half hiatus.

The links between Jerry Garcia, as a member of the Grateful Dead, and The Band stretched across 4 decades. The Band & The Grateful Dead played at two of the most famous rock festivals in history, Woodstock in August 1969 and Watkins Glen in July 1973. The two bands also played on the same bill at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City on July 31 and August 1. Three years earlier, in the summer of 1970, The Dead and The Band, along with Janis Joplin and Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, participated in the Festival Express, a train tour across Canada that was detailed in a 2003 documentary film. In the 1990’s, Rick Danko of The Band sat in with The Dead during their 3rd set on December 31, 1983, while all the members of The Band joined the Dead for the encore on June 21, 1984. The Dead added The Band tune The Weight to their set lists in the 1990s, often playing the song as an encore. After they reformed in 1983, sans Robbie Robertson, The Band served as the lead-in band for the Grateful Dead on about a half dozen occasions, including what turned out to be the Dead’s final show on July 9, 1995 at Soldier Field in Chicago, just a month before Jerry Garcia’s death.

Today's post takes us back to 1976, when Robbie Robertson of The Band had grown tired of the grind of touring. He urged the group to retire from the road, and conceived the idea of a massive, star studded, retirement concert to be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 25 1976 at Winterland in San Francisco. Along the way to the Last Waltz, however, The Band embarked on one final tour, giving their fans across the country a last chance to see the classic line up of Robertson, Rich Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm. This soundboard recording captures The Band during that tour, in Lenox on August 29, 1976, 49 years ago today

1970s - #3: In the spring of 1976, Paul McCartney, with his new band Wings, toured the United States for the first time since the Beatles last show in San Francisco in 1966. It was a historic event, commemorated afterwards by a then unheard of release of a 3 album set called Wings Over America. Wings played 2 nights at Madison Square Garden, on Monday May 24 and Tuesday May 25. I was a junior in high school, so my buddies and I couldn't go - school night! Not that we were all that upset. Rumors abounded that the Beatles were on the verge on re-uniting (it had only been 6 years since the break up), so we figured why see 1/4 of the group when it would just be a matter of time before you could see them in their entirety. As we know, the rumors never came true, and just 4 years later, in 1980, John Lennon was tragically shot and killed. Now looking back, its clear I should have found a way to go as Wings never again toured the US. I missed out on history. This excellent audience recording captures Macca & Wings on May 9, 1976, 49 years ago today in Toronto.

1970s - #2: Jim Messina, formerly of Poco and the Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Kenny Loggins, a little known singer and songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - songwriting, arrangements, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. Over the next 5 years, they would sell over 16 million records, establishing themselves as the best selling duo of the 1970s, a record they held until surpasse by Hall & Oates later in the decade.  In 1976, they made the decision to pursue solo careers, but played one last tour before they went their separate ways.  This soundboard recording captures them during that Farwell Tour, in Daly City,  on April 4, 1976, 49 years ago today.

JGB 1976 - Back To Back - #1: When the Grateful Dead played their "farewell show" on October 20, 1974 (which fortunately turned out to be just a 19 month break from touring and not a complete retirement), Deadheads wondered what they would do for live music. Well the Jerry Garcia Band stepped into the void, playing 115 concerts in 1975 and then another 80 in 1976! This soundboard catches them in Palo Alto on January 9, 1976, 49 years ago today. Just about 5 months after this show, the Grateful Dead would resume touring, so Deadheads in attendance didn't have long to wait to hear their beloved band once again.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this back to back set.
