Steely Dan - 1994-09-02 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

After an Independence Day concert in Santa Monica in 1974, Steely Dan retired from touring to focus on studio recordings. Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had tired of the grind associated with live performing and preferred to focus on song writing and album production. After producing 4 more albums (Kati Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja & Gaucho) between 1975 and 1980, Becker and Fagan announced a split in their partnership in June 1981. It would be another 12 years before the two would formally reunite, ironically, to produce 2 solo albums. Becker produced Fagan’s album Kamakiriad, while Fagan returned the favor by serving as co-producer on Becker’s 11 Tracks of Whack. Even more irony followed, as the two then reformed Steely Dan, not to record an album, but to go on tour! While their 2 solo albums didn’t sell all that well, their live concerts received rave reviews. They had such a good time on the road in 1993, they “did it again’ in 1994. This soundboard recording captures the band on September 2, 1994, 32 years ago today, in Dallas.

At one point in their career, Steely Dan, went almost two decades without touring, from 1974 to 1993, in order to focus on studio material.  Once they did return to the road, however, they seemed to want to make uo for liost time,  After tours in 1993 and 1996, Steely Dan lauched the 21st century by taking to the road in 2000, They then also toured in 2003, and then every year from 2006 to 2017. In fact, despite the death of  Walter Becker in 2017, Steely Dan, led only by Donald Fagan at this point, will be on the road again in 2018. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Steely Dan during the Heavy Rollers tour, at the North Sea Jazz Festival,  on July 15, 2007, 18 years ago today.

The album also received critical acclaim, appearing near the top of several end-of-year polls. The disc finished first in NME Album of The Year vote, and took the number two spot on end of year lists from Robert Christgau and the Village Voice. The album's opening song, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", became the band's biggest hit, reaching #4 on the charts soon after the release of the album. 2000s - #1: In 2003, Steely Dan took to the road for the 3rd time in 10 years, having also toured in 1993 and 2000. For a band that went almost 2 decades without playing live (from 1975 to 1993), going on the road now seemed common place, The tour was in support of the album Everything Must Go, released in June 2003, which at this point, is the last studio album from the band. Seems ironic that in the latter portion of their career, roles reversed, with touring taking precedence over studio work.  In any event, this soundboard captures the band on October 2, 2003, 21 years ago today, in Los Angeles. The set list featured 2 songs from the new album, but primarily consisted of classic Steely Dan cuts, though neither Do It Again nor Reelin’ In The Years is included.

2001 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2010-03-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2001 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was defined by two bigger than life stars who didn't perform.  Michael Jackson accepted the honor live, but then exited. Queen performed several tunes, but of course, without Freddie Mecury who passed away a decade earlier. Paul Simon became a 2 time inductee, having been honored pereviously for his time with Simon & Garfunkel. Steely Dan, Aerosmith and Solomon Burke all took the stage after their inductions, while Ricky  Martin played a trio of songs in honor of Ritchie Valens.

2000s - #6: On July 22, 2009, 14 years ago his very day, Steely Dan brought their Rent Party ‘09 tour to Boston for what turned out to be an incredible night of music. Fagan, Becker and their supporting ensemble played not one, but two albums almost in their entirety. After sets dedicated to Aja and the Royal Scam, the band played another half dozen tunes, including 2 dedicated to the home crowd, a cover of the Standel’s Dirty Water (Boston’s You’re My Home) and The Boston Rag. 2000s - #1:  On February 29, 2000, a rare date that comes around just every 4 years, Steely Dan did something even rmore rare, as they released their first studio album in 2 decades, since Gaucho in 1980. The disc, entitled Two Against Nature (clearly a reference to Fagan and Becker's tendency to not follow the norm) not only went to #6 on the Billboard charts, but also garnered 4 Grammy Awards, including Album of The Year. The Album of the Year victory was major surprise as they defeated Eminen and his highly controversial album The Marshall Mathers LP. In anticipation of the album release and tour, about a month earlier, Steely Dan recorded a live show for VH1 Storytellers on February 1. 2000, 23 years ago today, which was to be aired in April of that year. This soundboard recording captures that episode in its entirety, featuring several tunes from Two Against Nature as well as a host of Steely Dan classics.

On July 5, 1996, Steely Dan launched their Art Crimes tour, their 3rd series of live performances after Walter Becker and Donald Fagan reformed the band in 1993. A two month run in the US would be followed in September with their first European shows in over two decades.  The band brought the tour to a close in October with a series of concerts in Japan.  This soundboard recording captures them on the last night of the US leg of the tour, on August 17, 1996, 26 years ago today.

Steely Dan's 1974 tour in support of the album Pretzel Logic would be their last live gigs for almost 2 decades.  These 1974 shows featured crisp playing by the entire group, which included such noted session musicians as Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Danny Dias on guitar, as well as Jeff Porcaro on drums Becker also played guitar on this tour, which resulted in many songs featuring he and Baxter trading solos, adding to the band's live energy.  This soundboard recording from Memphis, on April 30, 1974, 46 years ago today, is an excellent example of just how good a live band Steely Dan was in their early days.  The show includes outstanding versions of such classics as Bodistava, Any Major Dude, Dirty Work, My Old School, Rikki, Reeling In The Years, and Do It Again.  Shame they took 20 years off from touring but at least you can relive some of that early energy by downloading this gem.

2006 - In the summer of 2006, Steely Dan, a band that once went 2 decades without playing live, announced they would launch their 3rd tour of the new century. Billed as the Steelyard "Sugartooth" McDan and The Fab-Originees.com Tour, the itinerary included stops in 33 cites, opening on July 7 and wrapping up on September 4. Donald Fagan and Walter Becker put together a 10 piece band for the run, including Keith Carlock on drums, Freddie Washington on bass, and Jon Herington on guitar. In addition, sharing the bill with Steely Dan for the tour was former band member Michael McDonald, who of course later played with the Doobie Brothers. This soundboard recording captures Steely Dan on the last night of that tour, on September 4, 2006, 13 years ago, in St. Louis.. Here's another surprising connection to the Grateful Dead. As most Deadheads know, Owsley Stanley served as the band’s first sound engineer and helped finance the start of the group’s career. He also became one of the first individuals to privately manufacturer LSD, supplying it to Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters for the Acid Tests in 1965 and 1966. The Dead were the house band for many of those Acid Tests. Owsley helped designed the Steal Your Face logo, and his nickname, Bear, served as the inspiration for the band’s Dancing Bear logo. Owsley and the band were busted “down on Bourbon Street” in 1970 for possession of marijuana, a tale immortalized in the Dead’s song, Truckin. Believe it or not, Owsley was also the inspiration for another song, the Steely Dan classic, Kid Charlemagne. The first 2 lines of the song - On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene, But yours was kitchen clean - reference the fact that the LSD produced by Owsley was noted for its purity. The Technicolor motor home in the 3rd line refers to the psychedelic painted bus which was used by Kesey and Pranksters to travel from one acid test to the next! The name of that bus by the way was Furthur, which is also the name Bob Weir and Phil Lesh choose for one of their post-Grateful Dead collaborations. After an Independence Day concert in Santa Monica in 1974, Steely Dan retired from touring to focus on studio recordings. Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had tired of the grind associated with live performing and preferred to focus on song writing and album production.After producing 4 more albums (Kati Lied, The Royal Scam Aja & Gaucho) between 1975 and 1980, Becker and Fagan announced a split in their partnership in June 1981. It would be another 12 years before the two would formally reunite, ironically, to produce 2 solo albums. Becker produced Fagan’s album Kamakiriad, while Fagan returned the favor by serving as co-producer on Becker’s 11 Tracks of Whack. Even more irony followed, as the two then reformed Steely Dan, not to record an album, but to go on tour! With Becker now mainly playing lead and rhythm guitar, they put together a band that included an additional keyboard player, another lead guitarist, a bassist, three female backing singers, and a four-piece saxophone section. While their 2 solo albums didn’t sell all that well, their live concerts received rave reviews. This soundboard recording captures the band on August 22, 1993, 2 dozen years ago today.

1974: In March 1974, Steely Dan released their 3rd studio album, Pretzel Logic, a commercial success which reached #8 on the Billboard charts. The album also received critical acclaim, appearing near the top of several end-of-year polls. The disc finished first in NME Album of The Year vote, and took the number two spot on end of year lists from Robert Christgau and the Village Voice. The album's opening song, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", became the band's biggest hit, reaching #4 on the charts soon after the release of the album. Steely Dan launched a tour in support of the album, the last live shows the band would do for almost 2 decades! This FM recording captures Steely Dan live on March 20, 1974, 43 years ago today, in Los Angeles.. 2000s - #5: On February 29, 2000, a rare date that comes around just every 4 years, Steely Dan did something even rarer, as they released their first studio album in 2 decades, since Gaucho in 1980. That disc, entitled Two Against Nature (clearly a reference to Fagan and Becker's tendency to not follow the norm)not only went to number 6 on the Billboard charts, but also garnered 4 Grammy Awards, including Album of The Year. The Album of the Year victory was major surprise as they defeated Eminen and his highly controversial album The Marshall Mathers LP. In anticipation of the album release and tour, about a month earlier, Steely Dan recorded a live show for PBS on January 28. 2000, 17 years ago today, which was to be aired in on March 1.  This soundboard recording captures that PBS special in its entirety, which features numerous tunes from Two Against Nature as well as a host of Steely Dan classics.
