I've only seen Jorma once, on July 14, 1979 in Asbury Park NJ. While my buddies and I we really enjoyed the acoustic set, we actually left halfway through the electric set, as the band seemed to be jamming endlessly, with little direction or purpose. That may have reflected the fact that Jorma himself was a bit directionless at the time, even experimenting with some punk music, which was far removed from his musical roots.  By the way that's just one of only two time I ever left a concert early.  The other was a Billy Joel show in February 2006, but that has nothing to do with the music.  In gact the show was fantastic, but the forecast that night was for 20 inches of snow and we had an hour ride home by car from Madison Square Garden. So we left before the encore, and just managed to make it home before the worst of the snow hit, though it did take a 1/2 hour to make the last 10 minutes of the drive!

2000s - #4: On Janury 20, 2004, 22 years ago today, the New York Guitar Festival presented "If I Had My Way", a trubute to the music of the Reverend Gary Davis. Davis was a significant figure in the history of American music, especially folk, blues, gospel and ragtime.  His songs, such as Samson and Delilah, You Got to Move, Candy Man, and Death Don’t Have No Mercy have been covered by artists as varied as Peter-Paul-&Mary, Joan Baez, the Grateful Dead, Hot Tuna, and the Rolling Stones. Thsi FM broadcast captures the tribute in its entirety, including sets by Roy Book Binder, Barndon Ross, Ernie Hawkins, and Jorma Kaukonen.

When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna, the Black Crowes, and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures the entire Furthur Festival from Cincinnati on July 16, 1997, 28 years ago today. The performances include two jams that were highlights of each stop on the tour, featuring the the various members of each band sitting in with one another, adding to the festival feeling!

Fortunately, after a few years, Jorma came to his senses and went back to doing what he did best, playing rock and roll, especially acoustic guitar.  In 1985, he reunited with Jack Casady to reform Hot Tuna. Also that year, he released a solo acoustic album, Too Hot To Handle, and went on tour in support of that disc. Jorma Kaukonen - 2003-08-08 - Bottom Line, NY NY  (EX Aud)

I've only seen Jorma once, on July 14, 1979 in Asbury Park NJ. While my buddies and I we really enjoyed the acoustic set, we actually left halfway through the electric set, as the band seemed to be jamming endlessly, with little direction or purpose. That may have reflected the fact that Jorma was a bit directionless at the time, even experimenting with some punk music, which was far removed from his musical roots. 

In any event, this excellent audience recording captures Jorma at his acoustic best, with a little help from John Sebastian, at the legendary Bottom Line on on August 8, 2003,, 18 years ago today.

The Band - 1985-01-02 - Lone Star Café, NY (late) (SBD)

1980s - #1: Despite the fanfare surrounding the Last Waltz, including a full length film and a triple disc album, that November 25, 1976 show was not the last time The Band would play live. While Robbie Robertson moved on to a solo career, the other members of the group would work together in various configurations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The Lone Star Café in New York, famous for a giant, 40 ft high, iguana sculpture that adorned the building, became a home away from home for the re-formed group. The Band played the club on numerous occasions in the late 1980s, often playing 3 or 4 nights in a row, with 2 shows each night, invoking memories of how concerts at venues such as the Fillmore East were scheduled in the Woodstock era! I was fortunate to see them at the Lone Star on October 1, 1985. My table was directly in front of the band, maybe a mere 20 feet away. This set from The Lone Star is about 10 months prior to that night, on January 6, 1985, 35 years ago today. 2000s - #5: In 1989, Jorma Kaukonen established the Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio as music school designed “to grow guitar players, a place where musicians could come together and surround themselves with music for several days and emerge with a new found inspiration.: The ranch also became a site for live concerts, often by Jorma or Hot Tuna, but sometimes featuring some very special guests. This FM broadcast captures one of these guests, the one and only Warren Haynes, on September 20, 2008, a decade ago today. Hot Tuna joins Warren for several songs, making this a collaboration you have to have in your collection.
