Grateful Dead - 1980 - #1: In 1980, the Grateful Dead celebrated their 15th anniversary and the shows during the 2nd half of the year, in San Francisco, New Orleans and New York that included an acoustic set, get most of the attention. But some pretty fine playing was going throughout that year, as evidenced by the fact that portions of the May 6, 7, 15 and 16 shows, the entire September 3 show, and 2nd set of the September 4 show, and the entire November 28 and 30 shows, have all been officially released. This soundboard matrix recording captures the band near the end of that historic year, in Oakland on December  30, 1980, 39 years ago today. Allman Brothers Band - 1979-12-30 - Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY (FM)

Allman Brothers - 1979 - #1:  For the Allman Brothers Band, the year 1979 was a bright spot before a tragic fall. The group had just recently reformed, after splitting apart in 1976 due to drug issues, legal conflicts and numerous tensions between band members. Their recent album, Enlightened Rougues, released in February, was well received, with some great guitar work between Dickey Betts and new addition, Dan Toler, on songs such as Pegasus, Can't Take It With You and Crazy Love.  The band, however, was still in serious trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, collapsed later in the year due to financial issues, and Southern Rock simply was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. By 1982, the band would again break up, and stay apart for another 7 years.  Despite their troubles, the Allmans could still put on a great live show, as evidenced in this FM Broadcast from  the Nassau Coliseum in New York from December 31, 1979, 40 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

Elvis Presley - 1976 - #2: As promised yesterday, here's part 2 of our Same Tour, Different Show set featuring Elvis Presley in December 1976.  As mentioned, Elvis managed to recapture a bit his glory days during December shows,  His concert of December 31, 1976 in Pittsburgh is legendary among Elvis fans. This soundboard recording captures him 2 nights earlier, on December 29, 1976, 43 years ago this very day. at the only show he ever played in Birmingham, AL. The Elvis In Concert site notes that this show is "widely considered one of the best shows of the late '70s, with Elvis is in great voice and very passionate about his performance as if he wanted to impress not only the audience but also his new girlfriend, Ginger Alden." Download this one to hear one last burst of greatness from the King before the world lost a legend in 1977.

The Who - 1979- #2: As promised way back on December 8, here's part 2 of our Same Tour, Different Show set featuring The Who in 1979. As 1979 drew to a close, Paul McCartney organized a series of concerts at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, to raise money for the victims of war torn Camboda. Dubbed the Concerts for the People of Kampuchea, the 4 shows, from January 26 to 29, featured Queen, The Clash, The Pretenders, The Who, Elvis Costello, Rockpile and Wings, just to name a few of the acts that performed. The penultimate night, December 28, 1979, 4 decades  ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording, featured The Who, completing their first year of touring with Kenny Jones on drums, who had replaced Keith Moon.  Moon had passed away just a little over a year earlier from an overdose.

Elvis Presley - 1976-12-28 - Dallas TX (SBD)

Elvis Presley - 1976 - #1:  In 1976, Elvis Presley slipped further into the drug addicted haze and paranoia which would claim his life the following year. The over weight singer had become a parody of himself. Marjorie Garber wrote that "in effect he had become Liberace. Even his fans were now middle-aged matrons and blue-haired grandmothers." Many of his long time fans, who had supported him during the decline that began in 1973, now turned on the King, appalled that they paid for tickets to concerts which had become grotesque displays of self indulgence. He left girl friend Linda Thompson to date 19 year old Ginger Alden. He fired 3 long time members of his inner circle, who responded by publishing a devastating tell all book that chronicled his drug use. Yet, he continued to sell out shows, and every now and then, glimmers of the King re-emerged. Presley ended 1976 with a 5 show mini tour that ran from December 27 to 31. At all 5 shows, he sounds healthy, strong and in excellent spirits, a far cry from performances earlier that year or those leading up to his tragic death the following year. Whether it was his recent weight loss or the start of his new relationship Alden, some force propelled Elvis to have one last hurrah on the waning days of 1976. This soundboard recording captures him on night 2 of the tour, in Dallas on December 28, 1976, 43 years ago today. Download his one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this set.

The Band - 1986 - #1:  The year 1986 had been a difficult one for The Band, as early on, Richard Manuel committed suicide. having suffered for years from alcoholism and drug addiction. Down to just 3 of the 5 original members - Garth Hudson, Levon Helm and Rick Danko as Robbie Robertson remained apart from his former band mates, pursuing his solo career - The Band could have called it quits for a 2nd time. Instead, the trio decided to continue to tour and would do so until Rick Danko's death in 1999. This soundboard recording captures The Band near the end of that tragic year on December 20, 1986, 33 years ago today. CSNY - 1969 - #1: After their historic performance at Woodstock in August, CSNY spent much of the rest of 1969 on the road. At several stops along the way, they were joined by Joni Mitchell. Unfortunately, details on this tour are sketchy and contradictory, to say the least. For example, take a look at this soundboard from Detroit on December 14, 1969, 5 decades ago today, Some web sites say Joni Mitchell appeared, but she is not on the recording. Some copies of the bootleg indicate that show took place at the Masonic Temple, while others indicate it's Cobo Hall. Some set lists show 18 songs, but this bootleg only has 14. Amazing what the passage of time can do to memories. Regardless of the location or presence of guest stars or what was played, you’ll want to download this show to capture CSNY on their very first tour!  Download this one, then come back on December 18 and 21 for parts 2 and 3 of this Same Tour, Different Show set from CSNY.

Today we capture Lone Justice in New York on December 13, 1986, 33 years ago this very day, on tour in support of the album Shelter. .The disc featured the 2 tunes I just mentioned and was co-produced by Jimmy Iovine and Steve Van Zandt.  Yet even those two rock heavy weights and an infectious title track, couldn’t help the band achieve the breakthrough commercial success they sought,  The album stalled at #65 on the Billboard charts, while the single made it only to #47. A shame that the public didn’t take to this vastly under rated band. This FM broadcast captures the band in New York on Decmeber 13 1986, 33 years ago today. Sanatan - 1976 - #1: In November of 1976, Santana launched a European tour, which showcased songs from their recently released album Amigos, as well as their soon to be released disc, Festival. While neither album featured any Billboard chart hits, both went gold and featured inspired playing by Carlos. This FM broadcast captures Santana doing that tour on December 12, 1976, 43 years ago today, in Germany, Unfortunately, this is just a partial show. Marshall Crenshaw - 1985 - #1:  In 1985, Marshall Crenshaw released his 3rd studio album entitled Downtown.  The disc was a bit of a departure from his previous two albums, having a slightly more rootsy sound to it. While the album received generally positive critical reviews, it was not a commercial success, failing to crack the Billboard top 100.  For whatever reason, Crenshaw, who crafted some of the best pop tunes of the early 1980s, simply never caught on with the public at large. This high quality audience recording captures him on tour in support of Downtown in at Fordham University in the Bronx on December 9, 1985, 34 years ago today. Ironically, some 30 years later, Crenshaw would wind up hosting a radio show on Fordham's WFUV-FM called the Bottomless Pit.  In any event, download this one, then come back on December 22 for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show set.  NOTE - this may be just sightly lower quality than we usually post at So Many RoadS, but there's not enough Crenshaw bootlegs out there so I wanted to be sure to share this!

The Who - 1979 - #1: Following Keith Moon's death in September 1978, The Who decided to continue as band, recruiting former Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones; keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick was also added to the line-up for live performances, adding another element to the band's sound. The band toured North America and Europe in the fall/winter of 1979, playing 25 shows between September 10 and December 28. This soundboard recording captures the band in Chicago, on December 8. 1979, 40 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back on December 28 for part 2 of this Same Tour, Different Show entry  One sad note - this show took place just 5 days after the tragedy in Cincinnati, where 11 people were killed at the Who's concert in that city. Seats at that show were general admission, and in the rush to to get close to the stage, the victims were trampled and crushed by the crowd.
