1977: We open November with a show from the band I saw live most often, from the very year I attended my first of 50 of their concerts. On September 3, 1977, me, my buddies and, along with 150,000 others, made the pilgrimage to Englishtown NJ, to see the Grateful Dead play the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter. Another performance that added to the legend of 1977. I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as over a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 31 years since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic. Speaking of magic, this soundboard from recording captures the Dead on November 1, 1977, 49 years ago today, in Detroit, just 2 months after Englistown. As the fall tour wound to a close in November, the band was still in peak form, as evidenced by the fact that the November 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th shows were all officially released.

Billy Joel was part of the star studded 1999 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class, that also included Bruce Springsteen, Dusty Springfield, Curtis Mayfield, Del Shannon, Sir Paul McCartney, just to name a few.  Joel licked off the perfromances with Only The Good Die Young, the was joined by Bonnie Raitt to perform Runaway in honor of Shannon. He also sat in as Macca sang Let It Be!

This souindboard recording captures Joel in Miami on Octoiber 31, 1977, 49 years ago today, on the cusp of his hige commercial breakthrough with the album The Starnger.  That disc, released about a month earlier, would soon take the world by storm, climbing to #2 on the US charts, and selling over 10 million copies, becoming Columbia Records largest selling album up to that time. The disc yielded 4 top 25 singles, Just the Way You Are at #3, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) at #17, Only the Good Die Young at #24, and "She's Always a Woman at #17. In addition, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, became a favorite of FM radio stations.

I saw Hall & Oates twice in the late 1970s, both times at the Garden State Art Center - my second concert ever on June 23, 1977 and then again on September 14, 1978. While my buddies and I were big fans of the songs Sara Smile and She's Gone. with the exception of Rich Girl, I don't really care for any of the 6 tunes that the duo took to #1 on the Billboard charts. In any event, soon after seeing them for the 2nd time, my musical tastes moved in new directions.

This soundboard recording captures Hall & Oates in Saratoga on June 18, 1977, 49 years ago today and just 5 days before saw them for the first time!

Of all of Billy Joel's albums, my two favorites are two of his earliest, Piano Man and Turnstiles. His breakthrough album, The Stranger, didn't do much for me, and his first #1 disc, 52nd Street, is on my list of albums I never want to hear again. That disc came out when I was in college and so many people were playing it constantly that I just couldn't take it any more. So, given those facts, why have I seen Billy Joel in concert on half a dozen occasions? Well, back in 1990 I met a girl. And we went out on a few dates. And she had tickets to see Billy, her favorite artist, at Yankee Stadium. And she invited me to go. And two years later we were married! And marrying her has been the best thing I've ever done in my life! So, whenever she wants to see Billy Joel, I gladly get the tickets. As I mentioned, we've seen him 6 times together - 1990, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015, and 2016. By the way, if you like personal anecdotes like this one, you'll find a host more in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT.

This soundboard recording captures Billy on the cusp of superstardom, at Carneige Hall on June 3, 1977, 49 years ago today. The setlist included 2 songs - Just The Way You Are and Scenes From An Italian Restaurant - from the soon to be released album The Stranger.  That album would take the world by storm, climbing to #2 on the US charts, and selling over 10 million copies, becoming Columbia Records largest selling album up to that time. The disc yielded 4 top 25 singles, the aforemnetioned Just the Way You Are at #3, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) at #17, Only the Good Die Young at #24, and "She's Always a Woman at #17. And the other tune from the album played at Carneige Hall, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, became a favorite of FM radio stations.

Dickey Betts was elected to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995 as a member of the Allman Brothers Band. Betts entered alonside fellow bandmates Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe Johanson Other entrants that year included Neil Young, Janis Joplin Frank Zappa, and the mighty Led Zeppelin.

This FM broadcast from the legendary Bottom Line in New York City captures Betts 18 years prior to his induction, and 49 years ago today, on April 19, 1977.  The Allmans had temporarily split up in late 1976 over Gregg Allman's testimony against the band's security guard Scooter Herring.  The rest of the band considered Gregg a "snitch" and refused to talk to him for almost 2 years.  In the interim, Dickey Betts formed the band Great Southern, and eventually released an album with them in October 1977.  The Bottom Line performance featured numerous tracks from that upcoming disc, including Run Gypsy Run, Bougainvillea, Nothing You Can Do, and The Way Love Goes, as well as several Allman Brothers Band classics.

Besides the 50 times I saw the Dead live, I attended 4 Jerry Garcia Band concerts in 3 different decades - in March 1978 at the Capitol Theater, in March 1980, also at the Capitol (a show that has been officially released), in August 1984 at Caldwell College and finally in November 1991 at Madison Square Garden. Garcia solo shows were like Dead concerts in some ways as some songs overlapped, the set lists were unpredictable and the jamming intense, but unlike them in others. Garcia on his own played an amazing variety of covers not found in the Dead's set lists, broke out some of his rarer solo tunes, and took far more solos than he would when jamming with the Dead. To sum it up, seeing Garcia solo was not seeing the Dead, and vice versa. I have a whole essay on that in my book.

This FM broadcast captures Garcia just a few months before I saw him live for the first time, in Berkeley on December 23, 1977, 4 dozen years ago today. As mentioned in numerous posts on this blog, 1977 was a magical year for Garcia and the Grateful Dead, so its a shame they didn't broadcast the rest of the 2nd set! Happy holidays!

The first 3 times I saw Jerry Garcia, all in the late 1970s & early 1980s, long time song writing partner Robert Hunter served as his lead in. Hearing Hunter live is always a unique experience, as his take on the countless tunes he wrote with Jerry is often so different than how they sound when played by the Grateful Dead.

On June 7, 8 and 9, 1977, The Grateful Dead capped their near perfect spring tour, truly one of the peak periods in the band's long strange trip, with 3 majestic performances at Winterland in San Francisco. Less than 2 weeks later, the band had to put their tour plans for the summer on hold when Mickey Hart was involved in a car crash in which he broke multiple bones. Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia used that time off to begin work on solo albums, Heaven Help the Fool and Cats Under the Stars, respectively, which would be released in 1978. Garcia took to the road as well, playing about 20 concerts in New York, New Jersey and California between July 1 and August 12. This soundboard recording captures the Jerry Garcia Band's 2nd set on August 6, 1977, 48 years ago today, at the Keystone in Berkeley, one of their favorite venues. Jerry picked up right where the Dead left off, continuing to play as well and as inspired as at any point in his career. Less than a month later, I would see the Grateful Dead for the first time, for the band's first show since Mickey's accident, the legendary Englishtown NJ concert in front of a crowd of close to 150,000!  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for another from Jerry in 1977.

NOTE: got some comments that there were some sound issues, which may have been related to the conversion from FLAC to mp3.  So I re-downloaded the original FLAC files, re-converetd them, and put up a new link as 8:15 pm on August 6.  So you can try downloading again. If the sound isn't better, than the issue is with the original files.

On May 25, 1973, Bill Graham promoted the first Dancing On The Outdoor Green at Kezrar Stadium in San Francisco. featuring Grateful Dead, Waylon Jennings, and the New Riders Of The Purple Sage.  That show became the blueprint for a series of festivals called a Day On The Green, that Graham ran from 1973 to 1991, the year he passed. The concerts were held at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Stadium, which was also home to the Oakland A's baseball team, and featured 3 or 4 bands on the bill. This FM broadcast captures Peter Frampton at Day on The Green 4 on July 2, 1977, 4 dzozen years ago today. Also on the bill that day were Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws and Santana.

In 1976, The Kinks left RCA records to join Arista. With some encouragement from their new label, the band changed artistic direction, relinquishing the theatrics of their previous albums to return to their roots. They eliminated the brass section and back up singers, returning the group to a 5 piece rock band. The new stripped down line up released its first album, Sleepwalker, on February 12, 1977. The disc, which in addition to the title track featured such soon to be Kink's classics as Jukebox Music, Life Goes On, and Life On The Road, went to #21 on the Billboard charts, the band's first commercial success in almost 7 years. This FM broadcast captures the band went on tour in support of the album, in London on December 24, 1977, 47 years ago today.

1970s - #2:  While the 2nd half of 1977 doesn't get quite the attention that the legendary Spring Tour,  including the concert at Barton Hall on May 8, 1977, does, the Grateful Dead continued to deliver exceptional live shows from September to December of that year. In fact, the very first show of the fall, September 3 at Englishtown (also my 1st Dead show!) was officially released as part of the Dick's Picks series. Concerts from October 1, 2 and 29, November 2, 4, 5 and 6, and December 29 also were officially released, as were portions of shows from October 7, 11, 14 and 16, and December 30 and 31. Today we bring you the a soundboard recording from that fall run, from Tempe on October 6, 1977.  For years, only portions of this show were available, but in April 2023, the full show finally became available thanks to the legendary Charlie Miller, who has been supplying remastered and upgraded copies of Dead shows for what seem like decades.

1970s - #1: For Linda Ronstadt, the year 1977 began by being featured on the cover of Time Magazine on February 28. For any rock artist to make the cover of Time was a major event, for a woman to do it was historic. She ended the year still on top of the rock world, with the release of the album Simple Dreams. The disc spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts. Two singles from the album, Blue Bayou at #2 and It's So Easy at #5, were both in the Billboard Top 5 at the same time, making Ronstadt the first female artist to accomplish that feat. The album also included Poor Poor Pitiful Me, written by Warren Zevon, and a cover of the Rolling Stones’ Tumbling Dice. Simple Dreams was Ronstadt's fifth consecutive Platinum album, selling over 3½ million copies in less than a year in the United States alone. This excellent audience recording from legendary taper Mike Millard captures Ronstadt on tour in support of Simple Dreams on October 3, 1977, 47 years ago today, in Los Angeles, one of 12 sold out nights in the City of Angels.

1970s - #1: For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. This FM broadcast brings you some early Rockpile, from,London, on April 1, 1977, 47 tears ago this very day.

H & O 1977 - Back To Back - #1: Believe it or not, the 2nd concert I ever attended was Hall & Oates on June 23, 1977 at the Garden State (now the PNC Bank) Arts Center in Holmdel NJ. I was a big fan of the tune She's Gone, which when re-released in 1976, went to #7 on the Billboard charts. I also really enjoyed the songs Sara Smile, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Rich Girl, which became the duo's first #1 hit. I saw the band for a 2nd time on September 14, 1978, also at the Arts Center. At that point, the duo's sound started to take on more of a pop music feel, and I lost interest in them. This sounboard recording captures Hall & Oates just a few months after I saw them for the first time, in Pittsburh on December 6, 1977, 46 years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back entry.

I saw Hall & Oates twice in the late 1970s, both times at the Garden State Art Center - my second concert ever in June 1977 and then again in September 1978.

This soundboard recording captures the duo just a few months after the first fime I saw them, in Ridgefield on Movember 25, 1977, 46 years ago today.

The one and only time I saw the Ramones, in July 1981,  was at perhaps the dingiest, dirtiest and tiniest club I ever ventured into, the aptly named Hole In The Wall in Rochelle Park, NJ.  The place was normally a a biker bar but on Saturday nights in the 1980s, they featured punk and new wave music. The band set up right on the dance floor, since the bar had no stage, and the ceiling was so low that Joey Ramone almost hit his head on one of the spotlights. We were so close to the band that I’m sure they noticed when one of my buddies, having had 1 too many beers, attempted to throw up in the trash can, but missed and almost hit a speaker,  Is it any wonder, then, that rule #5 in my book is titled "Rock Concerts Are Rarely Played At A Venue Meant For Music",.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures The Ramones a few years beofe I saw them on November 14, 1977, 46 years ago today!
